Had my Desire S a couple of months now on o2 in the Uk and really like it ,impressed with the speed so was wondering, would rooting it really make it much better?
Mate is banging on about doing it , but want to weigh up the benefits and possible pitfalls (apart from obviously bricking it) and also the best way of going about it .
I had a friend who just bought it too! He is new to Android and he loves it already..
Anyway, it's really up to you understand if rooting your phone will be useful, if you are happy like this, you could wait until you will be more confident with Android, or until you will need an extra power (by overclock your CPU for example).
In general a rooted phone with a custom ROM is faster that a stock one, and it doesn't have all the bloadware that HTC put on it.
You will be able to update your radio to improve the signal (and maybe fix the famous issues with it), overlock your CPU, install apk that allows you to back up your system, clear cache, customize your android in the deep, and so on...
The downsides could be the lost of your warranty and a small possibility to brick your phone...
But again is entirely up to you, regarding myself, I rooted my phone as soon as I bought it last year, happy since then!
Yes, it's definitely worth it. You can get the impeccable sense 3.0, a blazing fast 1.7 Ghz processor, and a ton of customization. BUT, YOU MUST KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING ! If you mess with the wrong stuff, you can permanently brick your device. Also, flashing is a little complicated, so do it only if you're comfortable with hacking.

Wow, battery must me draining at incredible speed !
sadly though without the xtc clip i don't see much of a chance for rooting becoming available on the desire s.
I was fortunate to have a soff phone. Till now the advantage of root I have take is by installing market enabler which let's me download apps currently not available in my region. Secondly I was able to install titanium backup to back my whole phone.
Now I am looking into roms and how to go around it. I am a total android noob with this one bring my very first experience.

Yes, at 1.7 ghz , battery life is low. But, you dont always need 1.7 ghz. 1.5 ghz or even 1.2 ghz is much faster than stock.
Cheers for the advice but I suppose the point is rather moot until I get S-off

As i had to return my Desire (the old one) due to overheating and rebooting under heavy use (for example navigation) without having it overclocked, I surely don't want to force these problems with overclocking.
Does anyone use the Desire S for navigation on a regular base? I am really interested if those reboot problems still exist. I am sure overclocking isn't very good for the hardware on a long term.
If you can use the power only for benchmarks then its only about e-peen comparison How about a watercooling mod

I've had it reboot once sure to overheating whilst using navigation. It was on a very hot day though. Several things you can do to stop it too.
Take out out any case.
Have your car air fans on low, and directed at the phone. Just get some air movement around it.
If you have root, underclock when using navigation.
If like me you are on Orange and SICK of the poor 3g service, buy an off line navigation app. I just got copilot and it's very good, and doesn't put half the strain on the phone. Did a two hour journey with it, and it only used 20% battery! That would have flattened it using google.
I think google maps has just updated to be more efficient in navigation and use less power, but haven't put it to the test though.

Hello, I have been using the Desire S for just over two months by now and have used navigation extensively for long periods of time (5 to 10 hrs on a row). Here are my observations:
- first of all, the phone required a reboot just once during all this period and it had to do with some stupid automatic download/update from Google. I wanted to stop it but pressed the wrong (and many at the same time) buttons. The phone just resested itself from the blue but came back to life normalul afterwards;
- the reset had to do with Googlemaps but navigation was not on;
- otherwise I use IGO, works flawlessly;
- overheated, under direct sunlight beneath the windshield; solved the problem by positioning the unit next to the air/AC
- at night, the temperature (measured by Battery indicator pro,) never rose above 39 celsius so I say there aren't any overheating issues there.
I'm an Android virgin but i must say, yes.
My Charge is routinely running 275 - 300 MB of RAM even when "idle" and I receive a LOT of warnings that my memory is running low when I'm using Tasker or Evernote. While I use Linux at home on my personal computer, I'm by no means a professional in any real sense of the word. But my layperson's understanding of RAM is that, generally speaking, more is better and allows for a machine to run, boot, etc... faster and more reliably. I've read that the Charge is a RAM wannabe and I know there are phones with much more than is available with this device but does that mean anything for this phone? Should I be using something that will clear more RAM for me or is that just a pipe dream and I have to deal with the lack of RAM by buying a new phone at some later time?
I'm using Tweaked 3.1 and have to say that Dwitheral has made this phone one I'm happy with - my fiancee has the Charge as well and is paranoid about rooting / ROMing, so she is totally stock. Needless to say, her phone sucks eggs and mine doesn't. I'm looking for a replacement but will not do so until Black Friday next year - then I can get a device that's a little "older" for less than $50 that will be a huge improvement over the Charge. In the meantime, with Tweaked 3.1, a Hyperion 3500 mha extended life battery and Tasker, this phone is serviceable. But the high RAM usage nags at me and I'm wondering if this is really an issue and, if so, is there anything to do about it? When I look at running applications in task manager, it is usually none or one, maybe, on occasion, two running applications.
Can someone clarify this for me? Do I need to be concerned and, if so, is there a solution that doesn't start with "Upon entering the Verizon store, ask where the new DNA is located...."
Thanks in advance!
Forget what you know about RAM in Windows, because this isn't Windows. In Linux (and by extension in Android), unused RAM is generally considered to be wasted. The Android low memory killer (LMK) will take care of killing apps and freeing when it needs to make space for other things, and artificially killing stuff is going to make your phone perform worse and use more battery. You need enough free for apps to have room to start without waiting, but not so much that it kills background apps that you want there. You can tweak the LMK, but 275-300MB used (75-100MB free) is pretty close to the sweet spot for this phone.
I guess it is from since of the tweaks I am running, but I usually have an extra 50-80 MB from what you described.

Hi guys, I'm going straight to the point: are you happy with your phone (in general, I know every phone has some minor annoyances)? I keep reading on the internet people that keep on lamenting about it (bad battery, laggy, awful RAM management, ect.), that's why I've opened this thread. I don't have the phone and I plan on buying it (it or the s6 edge or edge+, still have to decide - unfortunately the note 5 isn't coming to Europe anytime soon -), but all the reports are making me scared of buying it.
I'm happy with it. But you enjoy it more with root. Custom kernel fixes the ram issue, keeps the system speedy, custom roms add more features and debtor for better performance and ram management. So I'm basically enjoying it because of root
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Like osmosizzz above I can say that I am very happy with this phone. Once you root it and remove the bloatware this thing flies. Using a custom ROM and kernel I have better battery life, endless customization options and a speedy UI experience.
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
I'd like not to have to root, I'm just tired of it (coming from a nexus 4), but I guess I might consider it if I buy the S6
You really dont have to have root as the phone is still plenty fast and with each update that comes out they are improving the software of the phone.
It's the best phone I ever had, my only gripes are aggressive memory management and the placement of the speaker (I usually end up covering it when holding it ), lag and battery are a lot better since the 2nd 511 update, the first update from 501 was rather laggy
I have 2 of this phone. here are my opinions:
1st phone (rooted and on XstrestoLite ROM)
I have great battery life, responses and everything seems fine except for the current bug with BOGG firmwares, which resulted in the keyboard lag when coming for lockscreen (Keyboard open delay about 3-6 seconds) check out my battery life here and here
2nd phone (stock and not rooted ever)
I find that the battery life on this phone not as great as my 1st phone, but however, everything is pretty smooth and great to me. But for a short time i had problems with GPS not being able to lock properly on Waze and Google Maps, however, not sure what happened (i didn't update the phone or anything) but it was back to normal again. and never happened again ever since.
Verdict: i love both my phones, i'll have them only until the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes out.
I owned this phone for over 4 months now. It never lag and blazing fast, the fastest android phone I've ever seen and the most amazing design I've ever seen too. It is just how the poor memory management kills apps at the background when you doing heavy multi-tasking, I've heard the 2nd 5.1.1 OTA fixed it. If multi-tasking is your concern, you should consider S6 Edge Plus comes with 4GB ram.
The battery performance is above average, imagine when you got this ultra smooth speed plus 2K screen and with only a 2550mAh capacity, I'll say it has done the job pretty well on battery life and enough to use a full day for any light to medium usage user. Heavy user will need a 2nd charge but it supports QC2.0(just get a QC2.0 powerbank) or wireless charging.
https://shopmeenova.appspot.com/st/p/mrg2.html
External storage can be overcome easily with this cute staff.
Since I'm a one-hand lover and the S6 size is the max. acceptable limit to me. I'm thinking to swap to Sony Z5 Compact later but that's s810 cpu overheating issue scared me away, I may just stick with S6 until S8 out, still not decided yet atm.
Its pretty good, but the RAM management and the occasional battery freakout (background drain) are irritating. If 5.1.1 fixes these 2 issues, I'm gold.
Before anyone tells me I can custom, its a work phone, I need full stock unrooted/knox intact otherwise I can't hook into my work's MDM systems (yes, its really nazi security).
But even without root, debloating via package disabler pro/debloater makes a noticeable difference to battery, which is a poor indictment of Samsung (6th generation Galaxy and still not learnt their lesson?).
The camera is out of this world and you get REALLY used to having a reliable fingerprint reader, I just rest my thumb stupidly on the home button on other people's phones (and if there isn't a physical home button I just stare stupidly at the screen for ~2 seconds lol).
I've never actually used the 'swap battery' feature so don't miss it, work phone so I got the storage bumped but if I paid for it myself I'd probably be irritated at the cost
One happy user here.
Battery life, my only gripe. Otherwise a perfect phone for me. Won't be rooting, just changed the launcher (Nova prime) and Skinomi case. Happy S6 user here!
apart from the camera I don't like any thing about this phone.
Best phone i,ve ever had, fantastic camera/screen/battery lasts me a full day no problems at all
Unhappy user here; bad battery life, laggy software, agressive memory resulting to bad multi tasking; will definitely change the phone.

I'm quite pleased with it, and I didn't even root mine. I'm especially impressed with the GearVR.
Count me with the happy owners!
I will root soon anyway to get more flexibility and customization.
Since updating to the EVR firmware (for network specific settings) I love it, super fast and great performance even with intensive games. My one issue is battery life; although it lasts the day with ordinary use it does drain after a while of continuous use, but then again with fast charging I just plug it in for a few minutes and all is good.
Is there any fix for the memory management?

Only thing I dislike about this phone is the battery, but as other have said. Root->custom rom + kernel (and MAYBE soon Xposed) and this phone is at least average in battery life.
If you don't root (and is a power user, the phone is not for you). With root + custom rom + few tweaks I can go around 3-6 hours SOT on data (depending on brightness) and 6+ on wifi. Without I barely hit 3.
Phones like the Xperia Z3 compact can hit 6 hours SOT without root. So yeah, if rooting this phone is great, if not it sucks from a power user perspective.

Latest 5.1.1 has fixed it.
Hi,
Curretnly i'm on the G3 and i dont like it much.
Thinking on 1 of these:
Xiaomi Mi4C
Asus Zenphone 2
Now, I asking that in Mi 4C Thread bc's i thinking that there is some people that might had this.
What do you think?
Thanks!
It comes down to preference really as I dont really like phones bigger than 5" and xiaomi is quite established. Its got the right size, ir blaster and a good SOC which should get good rom support, cm12.1 already available
Where are you based? The Global version of the Zenphone 2 has band 20 which the Mi 4c doesn't have (may be able to be unlocked manually but I'm doubtful). The Zenphone also has expandable storage which the Mi 4c lacks - you may already be used to this and the larger form factor due to currently using the G3. That said, I've heard (but cannot personally verify) that the Zenphone has erratic battery life and performance in addition to being more expensive than the Mi 4c.
ermacwins & wingsfortheirsmiles,
I got used to 5.5" so this is not an issue at all...
I from Israel and LTE bands are 1800 & 2600.
So from my understanding, both of them would work, right?
32gb are more than I need, so the expandable storage is not too important.
If the Zenphone do has erratic battery life and performance, it's a good reason to go for the Mi4C, isn't?
Anyone else suffered or heard on it?
Thanks very much!

Well, my Mi4C had battery drain. Around 3%/hour on idle with WiFi and 4G all off, so when I woke up a third of my battery was already gone. I ended up fixing it by flashing the international ROM but after that, I've been getting 5 hours of SoT which is great. Can't comment on the battery of the Zenfone.
Regarding the battery problem:
Looks like it could different between your's to anyone else.
I read a review in a site in my country and the person who made the review praise the battery life.
Thanks!
My Mi4c has very good battery life. The same like the z1 compact i had. Other phones i had i charged sometimes more than 2 times a day.
The zenfone 2 has worse battery life, build quality and performance. If you don't mind the SD card and 5" screen then the Mi4C is your phone. Zenfone 3 could be very interesting when (should be kinda soonTM) it gets released though!
Thank you all!
Go for the Mi4C.
P.S: A newer model of Mi series also coming soon?
How abt Redmi note 3?
No battery issue with my Mi4C. Left it idle for most part of the day with cellular and Wi-Fi connected the whole time and managed 0.7% / hour idle time. I also have many apps installed (not facebook or any messaging apps though). It's rooted and greenified, running original stable Chinese Miui 7 Rom with some Chinese bloat apps removed. It's also scoring 52K on antutu 6.

Processing power wise, ZenFone 2 (the high end 32 GB internal memory with 4 GB RAM model) is comparable to Mi4C, the GPU is even slightly better. However, when it comes to video recording, ZenFone is waaaaay below Mi4C. The still image, if you use latest firmware, is already fixed though. Note that due to the use of Intel processor, some apps that use native libraries might not be installable. Ensure your apps are architecture-neutral or have both arm and intel version available.
OTOH, Mi4C has thermal issues and I still can't find the best thermal configuration so far. This causes the cores, both CPU and GPU, get shutted down or their upper limit is decreased to lower down the temperature. I break this limit by changing the limit a little bit higher, but if you play games while charging the phone, my best record reaches 90° C. Hot enough for a sleep killer tea
Happy deciding!
Having owned both phones i can say the Zen2 is a dud. The screen is dim, the speaker is weak, some apps drain crazy battery as they are using an ARM emulator to run on x86. It wobbles on the desk and the battery dies after your lunch break. The camera has low exposure that makes everything look darker than it is. The Mi4c just works like you expect a flagship to do.

I dont believe in 90° C unless your phone is borked and termal throttling doesnt work, also phone would shut down anyway with that temperature.

It is, well the screenshot I have is 87 actually in one of the many thermal zone (they're all varying from 60 or so) but during that time I did see and feel 90 (as a hot tea drinker, I know how hot is 90). Thankfully I have a flip cover that absorbs the heat, but if you touch the scree, it's really damn hot. Thermal throttling doesn't work on my device, because I've disabled the thermal driver :cyclops:
I don't really know the actual upper limit, but I guess it should be around 100-120. My PC was 120, but I don't think smartphone's SoC will differ much.

Hahaha, worry not, it's been back to normal temp (30-50). The problem only happens if you play resource intensive games while charging.
My last phone Mi4i also reached ~90°C after playing with the thermal engine. The flashlight turned on in the pocket of my pants and burned for half an hour. I just noticed it because my leg got hotter and hotter luckily the phone wasnt damaged through this. Also, i think the CPU can handle these temperatures without being damaged, but i would worry about other phone components such as SD Card, battery or glued components
Sorry, my antutu 6 score for my Mi4c was 685xx, not 52k.

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the OnePlus 2, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the OnePlus 2 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
well made phone, doesn't feel flimsy. SD810 doesn't seem to have the heat issues, screen could be a little better outside, battery life is great, the notification slider on the side is brilliant idea. Oxygen OS by itself sucks but with Xposed and several modules made the phone tons better.
Nice nice phone. I don't regret it!
Battery
Battery standby is extreme long. Tested it: in 12hours lost 3%. (Wi-Fi and Mobile Network was permamently active in my test)
But the active display standby is ~~~ lame.
Its got bit warm than my one+1 but it's ok.
Chasis/Design
The Chasis of phone is real AlMg. You can brake someones nose with that (not tested! )
It feels good in my hands, a bit heavier than one+1
Buyed with Kevlar StyleSwap Cover. Too bad, it's not fitting perfectly but it sit.
Sound
Speakers are louder than my laptop speakers. Clear Sound, no scratches heared.
Speed test and stability
Fast app start, smooth scrolling, switches fast between the apps.
Antutu Benchmark test:
Test run fine with over 55fps average.
With fully installed apps, games, tools etc..
Benchmark result: >58000
Camera/Video
Photo quality is very good. Takes pictures faster as one+1 and in good quality. nothing to say negative about it.
Videos are in good quality too. You can take slow-motion videos too (720p with 120fps)
SD Card
It's a bit faster as in one+1!
~3451MB (28183 files) Recovery backup done in 74 sec.
64MB/s Read/Write speed.
For a phone with 64GB internal memory it's enough speed.
Well. That's all importand tests i have done. If i have missed something, write it down here. i try to answer.
EDIT:
Very easy to unlock bootloader. Same way as in one+1.
Done it in under 5 minutes
On my old phone it was a real ass-disaster... (Xperia S) Never ever again
There are minor software glitches. But I expect everything to be fine in coming months. More than decent performance
love...mostly
i like the oneplus 2 overall, but not yet real excited about oxygen and updates only about once a month since purchase.
the type c connector seems to be usb type 2. OP apparently neglected to make accessory cables (power & otg) for the type c connection on 1+2, except power cable that comes w/phone. this, as of dec., 2015.
For otg: apparently you must go backwards to their usb type 2 otg (made for 1+1) and use their adapter from micro usb to type c connector.
tried a 3rd party otg type c that is usb 3.1: incompatable. perhaps update will fix this (i hope, since i
want to be able to use a flash drive w/phone since it has no micro sd slot). snc
I can try many roms

Awesome phone
overall. i m very dissapointed with this phone. Beautiful hardware with strong internals, the oos just make this phone extremely slow
Really love the phone since i installed CM 13
That runs really smooth and fast + great batterylife
I don't know if my OPT is defective, the speaker volume is very low. youtube videos or music is "ok" but especially ringtones are very low, I can't hear them outside of my house. At work in my pants it's impossible to hear and feel the phone because the vibration isn't strong enough. If Frenk_Ryder writes that the speaker is louder then the notebook speakers it's hard to believe for me. really?
and the battery life is horrible on my device. plugged it off the charger on 6 am and have only 20 percent on 12 pm with 2 - 3 hours SOT. I'm using the unofficial mahdi builds of cm13. the performance is good but Android System seems to be a battery hogger. I don't know why or what's the problem.
oxygen OS lacks much features of Cyanogen OS or Cyanogenmod and is "not complete at all", and Android System always is on top of the battery stats list. what is the issue for that? I mean Oxygen OS 2.2.0, older versions may be better in terms of battery life?
I hope anyone can help me with my device. thx
Was contemplating going with the Galaxy S6, but the Notification Slider was a real deal-maker for me (especially being loyal to the Galaxy lineup since S1).
Now owning the 1+2, I noticed I can not discreetly silent my phone in my pocket without taking it out and drawing attention in a meeting).
Have any of you found the Notification Slider to be a lot more useful than you originally thought it to be?

tried almost all the roms, some have something or the other missing, others have serious battery drain some have wifi issues, others camera is bull****. I miss my z2 so much and i will sell my op2 and get a nexus 7 or whatever its called, when its released
awesome, just needs a bit of software polish...
Near flawless
I have had many phones, mostly Samsungs and LGs. Let me tell you this Oneplus 2 is the perfect phone. WIth the latest OOS 3.0.1 MM, Xposed with Gravitybox, and nova launcher on top, it's a brilliant setup. This thing gets higher scores than the Nexus 6p on every benchmark i've tested, I can game for at least 33 minutes straight of Nova3 (that's the longest straight time I've played any game so far) and no overheating and NO lagging or slowdowns. I don't understand the controversy over overheating and throttling, perhaps the latest models being manufactured are the best models. Overall, I love this phone, also, battery life is incredibly for me. I go two days without one charge and that's using texting about 500 sms a day and web browsing, light youtube, and light music, ON wifi. I've never had a phone quite like it, and for 350 bucks! Awesome.:good::good::good:
Coming from a clapped out Nexus 4, I wanted to really like my One Plus 2 (Oxygen OS 2.2.1) but it was hard; a perfectly adequate phone, but not overwhelming.
The Marshmallow upgrade to Oxygen 3.0.2 has made it the phone it should always have been. It's faster, the fingerprint unlock is better and instantaneous (and no need to wake the device first), the occasional stutters have stopped, the battery lasts longer on standby.
The two standout features for me, however, are not software. Firstly, the alert slider is brilliant. Secondly, there are plenty of cheap Dual SIM phones but few decent ones (in the UK at least).
I only got access to the true potential of the sd810 after switching to a custom rom & kernel
Its Great phone overall.
I guess the sales could be much larger quantities if there were not invites.

I have developed a great degree of love for this phone, especially since it got a wealth of custom ROMs. It performs well, the battery life is excellent, it doesn't prevent me from installing custom ROMs or rooting, and all-in-all I love it. It handles everything I throw at it like a champ, and doesn't complain, and all for less than $300
its a good phone, but i had few hard times because of lack software updates from manufacturer (no android 7.0, no android 7.1, nothing) like on every other non-google phone, but thats life i finally fixed all major issues and it simply works, so i like it again
