WiFi disconnects - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else experience WiFi drops from this phone or is there probably just something wrong with my router.

Settings -> Wifi -> Advanced -> Keep wifi on during sleep... is that set to always?
What ROM, Kernel are you using?

Yes always on is set, I have the issues on cm m9 and paranoid android.

Could be router problems. Stock kernel?

Yeah I always use stock kernel

The only thing I can think of is it being a router problem. Do you have another device around? Use that device and connect to your wifi and see if you can reproduce your WiFi disconnects, if it disconnects then its your router.
If you cannot, go to a friend or familys house or public wifi and see if you can reproduce your WiFi disconnect problem.

My phone does this it's not a router issue

One more to back your clame up it drops my WiFi and my nexus 5 is still connected. CM need to get to work. This phone has been out for a while and things like this should have been fixed by now.
Still love it but glad I still have my nexus. Not being a fan boy just being truthful.

Yeah i have the same issue, my phones wifi goes orange every time it goes into deep sleep. It's really annoying

Do you guys happen to be using Snapdragon Battery Guru? Or any battery saving applications?

It's the phone. Not the router.
Does it happen on your other devices? No? Then it's the phone.

Someone else was having the same problem and had BatteryGuru installed which was turning WiFi off when the phone screen is off to "conserve battery."
Check your user apps guys.

Well I was asking that because they can be using those apps which are conflicting with wifi being disconnected when screen is on. I personally am not a fan of battery conservation apps, they don't do much in my opinion. Handling wakelocks and allowing ur phone to deep sleep is more important.

I am a very straight forward guy so please don't take me the wrong way.

It doesn't even happen to me when its in deep sleep...its when I'm actively using the phone. My WiFi will drop and my network will disappear from the wifi list in settings, then 10-15 seconds later it reconnects.

That exactly what mine does. Sometimes I have to reboot to get it to recognize my network. It's annoying to say the least. I may try another ROM to see if it's any better

Using another rom will not resolve the problem, the wifi driver is within the kernel not rom. Try using other kernels instead.

Don't matter what rom I'm running and what kernel I am using the wifi connection suddenly turns off and then on automatically. I've checked the inactivity politician to never, and that's not the problem.
Does someone have the same problem?

Nope. My WiFi works great. I have the sleep policy set to screen off, turns back on immediately when I wake it up and I never drop it. The only odd thing I have is that sometimes while on WiFi it will pick up a mobile data connection as well. Doesn't interrupt anything its just weird.
Yes, I am. And I think quite a lot of users as well.
The wifi hardware in this Nexus S is ****.
Believe me, try to live with it, it is a hardware issue. Use 3G or invest better / more wifi access point.
I have tried a lot of things but im still with this boring thing .... Any solution???

I've tried to diagnose from the PC but keeps telling me I need to contact my service provider. It will connect but goes back and forth. Would anyone be of assistance. Please and thank you

Ok guys I'm using stock tethering with USB. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting and it will give full connectivity then it will drop to local only then in a few more minutes it will drop to limited connectivity. I just don't get it. It will connect but just losses connection like crazy. I will try a few apps and report back, in the mean time any help or ideas on what to do are welcome.

I've only used Mobile AP and Tether app to do tethering, never had an issue on those. Best of luck.

I dont think it matters if the phone is charging or the screen is off/on. I used to tether with the stock app all the time no problem while charging and screen off for a long time.
I just recently started getting limited connectivity. I only use our stock Mobile AP. I have never used the usb cable to tether. I wonder if it is a result of something we flashed..
If we can figure this out I will be very happy!

I agree. It would seem it is due to some unforeseen issue that I would not no anything about. It seems like when the phone goes to sleep that's when the trouble starts. I haven't been able to test this theory as I haven't had access to a PC for a day or two. Will report back with you guys cause I'm gonna try a few apps and see if keeping the screen constantly on will help if it does then we will know it is something to do with the phone sleeping while tethering. Thank you much for your guys input..

I always turned my screen off and never had an issue before. This is recent issue for me. I'm not running any battery saver apps..I did recently flash a ROM that came with Bali 3.3 uv.
I never uv and actually flashed Bali 3.3 (no uv) this AM. Could the under volting be causing it? The last time I tethered was two days ago so I don't know if I still have the issue with Bali 3.3
Thanks
Ok. I have done some testing and definitely have come up with a fix for us. Is it a temporary or permanent fix? I'm not sure just yet. This is what I did.
Turned on my Acer laptop/let it boot up.
Turned on our stock Mobile AP as a wireless tether. I got limited access.
I right clicked on the signal status bars icon.
I got a popup with 3 choices one of which was STATUS.
I clicked on STATUS and the limited connectivity icon (triangle with ! In it) almost immediately disappeared before my status window popped up.
I HAD FULL CONNECTIVITY.
I browsed a little.
I shutdown/started up my pc 3 times and had full connectivity each time.
I then, for40 mins, downloaded ROMS, Kernels, Mods ect from xda and rootzwiki using wireless Mobile AP with no issue our loss of connection. I worked it good!
I am now shutdown and waiting for an hour to pass (another 30min) to test if I will have full connectivity immediately on connection.
I'll check back in soon. Hopefully I'm on the right track!
**Also**
My phones screen was off the entire time.

No. Audiophile Funk in the trunk as of yesterday but I was getting it on Black Ice too. Just started happening 10-14 days ago
@GDofWR420
Ok. I started pc/let it boot up and run. I then turn on Mobile AP (wireless).
It showed connected but there were no bars and the blue wheel was spinning..still early in its connecting process I'm sure.
I got the limited connectivity icon on the signal status bars and it said Limited connectivity in the popup.
I right clicked the signal status bars and immediately got Full connectivity. I didnt even get The 3 option popup with the STATUS option.
I'm still fully connected as I write this. My phones screen off the entire time.
I'm going to shut down pc and reboot phone and see what happens...I'm sure it is something we flashed and when the devices "talk back and forth" something happens.
Forgive my noob speculations and non technical replies. I'm REALLY NOOB with pc's lol.
If all we will have to do is right click the signal status bars here and there that wont be to bad.
I'm going to Odin stock (probably not tonight) and see how that works for us also...
BTW; I have been using your CWM advance restore guide and I'm loving it! Wish you did it months ago! What a time saver! Thank you for that.

[Q] Wi-Fi disconnect while phone sleeps on Bionix build #4?

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the wifi not staying connected while within a wifi network anytime the phone goes to sleep, or shows both wifi & data connection active at the same time? It seems to disconnect the wifi when phone goes to sleep and when I wake the phone, it goes through the connection process and stays at obtaining the IP address for +/-15mins. Is this an isolated issue or is it a common thing with all non official GB custom ROM 's? Just to note, I changed the wifi scan interval from 15 sec - 120 sec after I flashed the ROM. Been on the ROM now for about a week and a half and so far this is the only thing I noticed as strange. Overall this ROM rawks!!!

Not sure specifically.. But you can set it by location.. Like, if your on your home network, or at the office. I usually don't pay attention to the power it uses because I use the setting for home and im always by a charger..

Dealing with wlan_rx_wake

Hey people,
Really suffering here at work where the wifi causes a wakelock that destroys my battery. Any chance the community has found a fix to this issue? It doesn't happen at home on either of my two routers. No matter where I am at work, however, my battery goes down like mad when connected to Wifi.

There are multiple threads with the same issue if you do a search. Basically it's not something a kernel or a custom ROM at this point and most likely relates to wifi somehow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2519294
That particular wake lock is triggered any time the phone is awoken from deep sleep to send or receive data on wifi. If you are having issues with just one particular wifi network, that is likely DHCP/dynamic IP related. There are reports of issues with certain wifi routers that are using dynamic IP addresses causing DHCP queries to constantly wake the device.

[Q] home wifi issue

Hey guys,
I need some help with this issue. I am pretty sure it is my home wifi because I don't seems to be having the problem on the works wifi.
so the problem is my device will have slow to no internet connectivity even when i am standing right next to the AP. this is making it to where i don't get any emails and the email app will not let my phone sleep causing major battery drain with the wake lock being "latency" something something. when I get home i will see if i can get a screen shot of it for you.
Any help on this would be nice.
Firstly, give your router a reboot. The whole remove power for 30+ seconds

Then, if you are still experiencing problems, make sure your router's firmware is up to date.

I've had this problem too. Turns out it's something to do with the carrier/SIM conflicting with the wifi connection. It was suggested that I turn off mobile data while using wifi. Since doing this my speed has never dropped. I've also set up a Tasker profile to turn mobile data off and on automatically.

Yeah, definitely a strange bug, apparently introduced with KitKat. I tried my O2UK sim in a Moto G and had the same wifi speed drop. My backup Vodafone sim causes no speed drop. Weird indeed.
