Hi,
I managed to spend about ten minutes in (fresh) water with my nexus 5 in my pocket recently.
I took it apart, dried it off and charged it.
I can get the phone to boot but only ever see the faint glow of the backlight at the bottom of the screen. The display, and it seems the touch functionality, are not working. I know the phone boots because it rings when I call it, I hear notifications and I was able to connect to it via my PC and copy across some data. When I press the power button the backlight comes on but only after a few presses whereas I would expect it to kick in immediately.
I decided to buy some isopropyl, removed the pcb shields and soaked and scrubbed the boards.
This made no difference, still all I see is the backlight.
I thought the lcd was broken so ordered a replacement but it turned up today and it shows the exact same behaviour, backlight only.
Any ideas how I should proceed to troubleshoot this. Apart form the power switch which doesn't seem to be responding as I would expect the phone motherboard must be (almost) fully functional as it connects to the network and receives calls, texts and emails.

Update:
I should also add that I disassembled the screen and cleaned the diffuser, lenses, etc. with isopropyl.
Before doing this when looking at the right angle with the backlight on I could make out water trapped in the screen.
It's now all clear but still didn't fix the lack of pixels
If a new screen didn't do the trick... That only leaves the motherboard.
Water is evil.... You can spend and spend and keep missing the real damage, or find more things are damaged.
I'd stop spending and put the cash towards a replacement. You could replace the motherboard only to find out it still isn't right.
IMHO... If a device gets wet, and anything at all stops working .... Just replace it. Sorry to hear!
If you got extended warranty that covers drops and water.... You're golden. If not... Shopping time.

So I guess I'm the only idiot that's dropped his Fuze... Well maybe not the only, but the first that dropped it in such a way to not cause any (visible) physical damage, but enough to make the phone inoperable. Fair enough, I can accept the Dunce cap for this one.
The Phone works, receives calls/messages, even sync's with Activesync. Just one problem, The screen is black. The backlight turns on, but no image is displayed. Not even any of the boot screens. Sounds work, I sync'ed up all my data, everything seems fine, except for the screen.
So here is my Dilemma: Is there anything I can do to fix the phone? Or Am I going to have to re-flash the device to factory settings and try to call att/htc to get a replacement for a device that "just stopped working"?
I'd rather fix it myself just to avoid dealing with the carrier/manufacturer, but if that's my only option than so be it. Please Advise.

But there might be something to accept/allow on the cellphone itself to see the screen. So maybe you can navigate to something on your phone to get it to work. Other than that, I have no idea.

Happened to my Kaiser, screen was white though, rather than black.
Take all the data off you can with MyMobiler and reflash a stock rom. Should still be covered under warranty. I did the exact same thing with my Kaiser.
Flashed the standard ATT upgrade rom, brought it in to warranty replacement and said the screen randomly turned white.
In and out in a few minutes with a new Kaiser. He made me keep my old battery back.
Because it is a problem where no physical damage is apparent, it will be difficult for them to determine if it is simply a manufacture defect where the screen went bad or if it is user accidental.
I actually dropped my Fuze for the first time last night (or this morning, I dont recall). My best friends girlfriend clothelined me while I was texting and the phone went flying, back fell off and battery chucked out. Slid across the ground for a bit. A tiny dent in a corner and some nice scratches on the stock screen protector, other than that A-okay. Invisible shield helped quite a bit ^.^
(I use invis body shield and stock screen protectors, the IS is a strange texture and too grippy for a screen protector)
I have dropped my Touch PRO about 5 times to tarmac while getting out from the car but nothing happened yet
do you have insurance on the phone? if you do, then its covered otherwise it is unfortunate.. all new phones, especially ppc's I insure with my local SF insurance.. that is the rule.

Same exact thing happened to me minus the clothesline. Landed on the corner, back and battery popped out, powered it back up and black screen of death. Didn't want to wait till tomorrow to get it replaced but oh well, I'll be even more careful than I already am with it. I just need to reflash it to the stock ROM/SPL now. Thankfully I still have my Tilt as a backup.

I do have insurance, when they offered it at the Store I almost said yes before the rep finished explaining it. So I'll just reflash it to a stock ROM/SPL and get it replaced tomorrow.
If you guys have the fuze through AT&T then you can get warranty replacements quite easily as long as there isn't obvious physical damage suggesting user abuse, ie no crushed screens, liquid damage, etc.
Someone here might suggest that this is unethical abuse of the warranty exchange system, but I will vehemently disagree! Cell phones should absolutely be able to withstand occasional drops from pocket level to concrete, as this is a quite common occurence. Hell, my laptop was designed to be able to take a fall from a table top.
So I would suggest you call AT&T and tell them your screen just stopped working one day. Say you've done a hard reset and everything else they'll suggest you try, and they'll send you a refurb in the mail with a box to send yours back in. I would suggest reflashing the stock rom and spl before returning, though.
BTW, if I were to guess about the cause for the inoperable screen, it would be that the lcd connector came loose in the jolt from the fall. So if for some reason warranty exchange isn't an option, perhaps you could venture into the guts of your device and try firmly reseating the connector...
this is whats going on. one night my screen was letting me select stuff just fine. the next morning i woke up and the screen was unresponsive. now the hardware keys do work just fine. now heres the the bad part. i figured that the issue was originally casued by my CFW so i did a hard reset.... unfortunally that wasnt the problem.i did knotice that when i do tap the screen when the backlight dims down it does brighten up. i donno if that helps. anyone have any ideas. oh and yes it an att phone. no i dont have warranty on it( i got them to upgade my phones that being said the phone went swimming in a hot tub a few months ago)

My digitiser broke a couple of months ago, I had weird oily patterns under the screen that were only visible in some kinds of light (especially flourescent), and reduced sensitivity. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is maybe to check for those oily patterns if you're worried it could be the digitiser. I had to get a replacement on insurance though, so can't be much help with how to fix it.
yah its had an oily square on the screen that if u looked at the right angle ud see it that being said it wasnt to big. also that square was on there for almost 7-8 months and like i said when the digitiser went out it kinda worked the night before and then it stopped working the next morning
Sounds like it could be the digitiser then... If you're good with electronics, you could buy a new digitiser and try to replace it maybe? I'm a bit pants at stuff like that though, so just got a new one.
If you get it fixed, apparently the fault is caused by too much pressure on the screen, so keep it out of jeans pockets
A quick look on ebay shows one for £15 (about 25$ i think), comes with tools (well - a plastic scraper / pry & a t6 or t5 screwdriver) - no instructions with the auction - but if you check the wiki it has a dissasembly guide.
Changing the digitiser isnt for everyone - normally (well i found for my old Kaiser) there are ebay sellers who will supply & fit (for a small fee) the parts, ofc check their rating before you send your phone away! Or google for a repair shop close to home - i would estimate you shouldnt pay more than about $40-50 to have a digitiser supplied & fitted, quite possibly much less, depending on the shop of course.
Last night I dropped my TF 700 about 5 feet onto concrete floor.
It was working fine right after the drop, but the screen panel ('Gorilla Glass') was popped out a bit and one
corner of the frame was severely dented. But the worst part is that I thought I could fix it on my own.
So I disassembled my TF 700 following the 'TF 700 Teardown Tutorial.' I was able to fix the dented aluminium backplate
(I ripped off the warranty seal during this process though).
After this I reassembled the tablet and everything seemed fine at this point.
However, when I tried to turn it on, the screen display wouldn't turn on. I know that the tablet is still functioning because
when I connect it to my PC, I can see all the files saved. But the screen is completely dead.
I'm pretty sure that this is because I accidently bent some cable component that connects the LCD panel to the mainboard
(the flat cable thing that is made up of copper fibers). Upon closer examination, it looks like the bent cable is preventing some parts from
connecting to each other (please see the picture attached). I really need this tablet and I'm here to ask you what I could do to fix this.
Where should I go and how much do I have to pay to replace/fix the bent cable? Or even better, where can I get the new back-plate? Cuz mine now looks terrible..

Ouch! Tough break. Unless you have insurance, shed a few tears, bury it quietly in the backyard behind the garage, and buy a new one.

If you do not have an extensive warranty, you'll probably lose about as much money repairing this unit as when you'd buy a new one (it sounds pretty bad, judging from your story). It might be better to bite the bullet, as BTrack proposed.
Hard for me to see what happened by the pics.
Someone had post sometime back that they were parting out their broken Infinity.
Maybe the search can turn up the thread.

Ouch, unless yo have insurance I think you may be out of luck. I know Asus will fix tablets with " costumer induced damage", but they charge for parts and labor. And it looks like it would cost more to fix than buying a new tablet.

.Just an off the wall idea, you might try sending a PM to someone who has bricked their device and see if they want to sell it. You might be able to pick up the case and connector that way
I had a drop onto tile with my first prime.
My AMEX covered the cost but they made me send it to Asus (even after getting an estimate) instead of just refunding the money like they had on some previous items. When mine dropped it was just the front glass that cracked all the way across, as well as the aluminum body being deformed. The touchscreen was working, screen worked, device was fully functional. The final repair + shipping came to around $378, and that was still a functional (though sharp, pointy and ugly) device when it got to them. If you bought it on a credit card you should check to see if they have any kind of accidental coverage. Good luck

Why don't you try taking it apart like you initially did, buy a bricked one and try to fix it?
You could sell it to me so I don't have to disassemble a fully working one to play with hardware
I had dropped mine off a table onto a concrete as well. About the distance too. Hit right in the corner of the power button. The glass held up well. The metal bent up and plastic completely cracked through. I was able to squeeze it back together, but was still bent up. It still was functional.
I was did an a-hole move. Since I did it a week after receiving from Amazon, I told them it came damaged, but packaging was fine. They exchanged and not a problem.
You could try exchanging it from where you got it. Another option, there are aftermarket warranty services that you may be to use if you got recent enough. Some allow you to get purchase within thirty days of purchase.
Although, my guess, you probably past that time. I would suggest trying to fix it again. At this point, you have nothing to loose.
Send it back ta Asus for an estimate to repair. Ya never know, you might get off with a cheap fix.....worth a try.
I'm bummed for ya though.

How do you diagnose what to replace on your tablet? Is it possible with the tf700t?
Here is the scenario- I travel a lot and kind of pack my backpack tight and I think the extra pressure on the tablet has screwed the right side.. I turned on show touches in developer tools and a touch comes and goes from the right mid side (sometimes it moves) .
I was able tdeal with this for a while but now after my last travel it's made it almost impossible to use the tab. My tablet it is out of warranty, unlocked and rooted so don't know if I could sent it to Asus for repair.
My question is, is it my touchscreen I need to replace or is it another component? Currently I I hold the tablet and apply pressure on the right side (back) I can make the touch go and come. If I turn the screen off it will remove the touch for a bit. if the touch won't go away I try to apply pressure to the back in various spots to it goes away
My understanding is if you can see what's on the screen the display panel is good. If there are touch problems then you MIGHT need a new digitizer. It could also be that in bumping it around and what not that the ribbon cable connecting the digitizer has come loose. Heat sometimes seems to be involved in this happening too. There are a couple threads here about these issues, fixing them and how to go about replacing the digitizer yourself and where people have bought them. It's not a feat for the faint of heart but it can be done at home.

Thanks I'll check it out didn't know if it was the touch screen or digitizer. I'm typing on it right now so seems like touch is just fine.
I suppose I'll open it up and see if a cable is loose. But do you think Asus would accept it for repairs? It's unlocked and rooted.
They woud gladly accept it for repairs... but they would charge you a bundle. Your warranty is void since you unlocked.

Touch screen/digitzer I believe are one in the same.
Sure Asus will fix it. In/out of warranty. But as mentioned, they'll charge you big bucks. My guess to replace the digitizer would be about 300USD. MIGHT be a little less.
If you open it somewhere inside, can't recall position, there is a service switch you should turn off 1st, before you do anything else. That might keep you from frying some component should a short develop somehow. Just remember to turn it back on last before you finish inside.
I recall reading that the ribbon cable is held in place by either glue or double sided tape and the heat aids in its becoming loose and can be part of the problem with the digitizer getting all crazy.
BTW Anyone can feel free to correct or add to this....
So on my Nexus 5, the backlight started going off randomly... tapping phone would bring it back..
Then eventually it went out and i had to bend/flex the phone and it would keep working a while..
I contacted support then, but one time i bent it a little to get it on and the frame (plastic outer edge cracked), doh.. Now, of course, they will not give me a warranty repair because the device is physically damaged. So i tried a new screen, no dice. Now i have two good screens and a phone that still wont work unless i bend the crap out of it. Anyone else see this problem? Worth trying to replace motherboard? or should i just sell parts (new screen i bought, old screen, battery, etc) and buy a whole new phone... There is one specific point where i can bend it and backlight comes on, but i cant find a short or loose connection anywhere. I have had the thing COMPLETELY apart and back together multiple times. I should mention, it works totally fine when backlight is off, just no backlight so i can only see it in super bright direct illumination.
Any ideas???

Fixed for now! Woohoo! Based on the position of where i had to flex it, i tried a little gap filler... a folded piece of paper, between the SIM slot and the back frame. With everything screwed back together, it just puts a little pressure on that area of the main board.
Now the only problem is the screen i bought is defective (lines all up and down it) so now i have to disassemble again to put the old one back in.... oh joy, now to return it through ebay... I'm sure that will work well. Either way, phone working again! FYI, this phone is REALLLY easy to take apart and put back together.
EDIT: F.. snapped the end off one of the little antenna cables (the black one, on the right when looking at the uncovered back of the phone) when redoing the screen. Anyone know what that is for? WiFi and cell data signals seem ok.. Looks like a diversity antenna for something, because of all the others at the tope. Maybe google will have an answer.
