The reason I'm asking is mine is showing vFat and I know thats an old out of date format. I dont really have anything on there I need so I was going to use TWRP to reformat it. I just didnt know which exfat to use...exfat3 or exfat4. I know the internal storage is exfat4 with all of these KK Roms. I didnt know if it would cause any problems to make it match the internal storage formatting.

help with formatting sd card

I think I messed up my sd card for my G1.
I have a 8gb memcard and it was with 2 partitions ext2 and fat32. I just wanted to enlarge the fat32 side because the ext2 was 4gb big. Useless I thought So i deceided to make it only 500mb as ext2 and 7gb as fat32.
Now the computer can't access the card, it says that the cardslot is empty.
I use Paragon Partition Manager and there I can't modifie my sdcard. Nothing helps. I can see my sdcard in Paragon, but can access it and modify it!
Is my card messed up and do I have to buy a new one? Anybody knows how to restore it as it was when I bought it (only fat32 8gb)
Try this: http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/

YES you are so great!
It works now! Just like new. 8gb no partitions.
Thx!
No problem.
Now I have an another problem!
It always says write delay failed constantly!
Cannot access it, cannot format it, even not with sd formatter.
Is it now realy broken?
nobody :'(
Otherwise I have to order a new 8gb memory card which costs me a lot
use partition magic, create 2 partitions, make the primary partition your biggest and format it fat32, the second partition format in ext2. Then you will be okay

The problem is that I cant access my mem.card.
Always a fault: write delay failed. It makes even my computer freeze.
well if you have to get a new one get one of these:

Had the same problem after i used Paragon, would not read micro sd anymore. I did a system restore to before i installed Paragon. Problem solved. I am able to read my cards again. I noticed that in that "finish formatting after reboot" Paragon had an error. Figured thats what caused the problem.

Hi Karloe
Yes very happy with my white G1.
How is it with the black one running ADP 1.5?
I will try SDSPLIT, but i think it will not help
If it doesn't work, try a linux live CD (Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Knoppix (I like Knoppix because of the extensive toolset for testing))
[offtopic]
The black one is doing fine, engineering bootloader, ADP1.5 with appstosd

Can't flash zip from external sd card

On latest CMR. This has never been a problem. Bought a new sd card. Card works perfectly. Went to flash an update and have error saying can't read external sd card. Reformat. Remounted. Still no luck.
It's a 64gb.
Any one have a solution or had a similar problem?
Try TWRP... ****ty solution, but worth a try.
Lol yeah, thanks for the response though.
I would try it, but since I already moved all my files off and on after reformat I feel like I wasted too much time with this already.
I can still flash from internal card, and my external sd card works perfectly otherwise so it really doesn't make a difference.
I guess we can all just make note that a reformat doesn't work in this situation so it can save some people trouble and time.

How can I tell what the card is formatted to? Any reason not to leave it the way it is?

Haha the above scenario is why you likely don't want to leave it as is. No recovery will see your external sd card if it's formatted to exfat. So, you'll have to use your internal storage to flash roms if you don't have it formatted to Fat32.
You can check the format by plugging your external sd card into a computer right clicking the drive and pressing "Format" (don't worry a second window opens) or I think you can also see it by selecting "Properties."

Format SD card to FAT32 via phone settings

just as the title says... when choosing the format option in settings it does not ask what format to make it... the properties of the card simply say "Generic Hierarchy" do I really need a card reader for my PC in order to change it?

haha I've tried just about everything I can find.. the settings for formatting do not give me any choices as to what format.. it just formats it.. and TWRP will only let me make partitions.. gives me options for ext3 or ext4 whatever that is... I guess I will need to find someone with a card reader on their PC or laptop.. to get it formatted to FAT32

Can you still boot into your Rom? If so, under settings/storage you can format it and it will use fat32

Yes I am currently on my phone typing all this ... But the format option under storage settings doesn't offer fat32.... I got a card reader and formatted it to fat32. When I pop it back to my phone it changes it again

[Q] Ext SD Card questions

Hey all, quick question regarding m8's handling of sd cards.
I have a 32gb external ssd in my vzw one m8 running LolliGPE, and I'm just wondering what the best way is to format it. I believe that if I were to format it on the phone itself it will use FAT which causes issues with my TWRP backups due to the size.
So with that being said, I think NTFS or exfat is the way to go...
do you connect the SD directly to your computer and format it there before inserting into the phone or what? i want a versatile format that i won't run into file size limitations with...
thanks for your help!

I just picked up a SanDisk Ultra 128GB UHI-I/Class 10 Micro SDXC Memory Card, formatted it directly from my phone with no issues.
edit: it formatted exfat
was it formatted to anything prior?

For 2 GB Fat 32 is fine. It may b that it just wasn't large enough for exfat.
I'd put it in the phone, format it, and forget about it. You'll b fine.
If u insist on changing it you can use Aparted from the play store.

my primary SD is 32gb, i just used the spare one to try it out. Interesting, you're probably right though it probably just defaulted to fat32 because the drive is so small.

Of course you're right with the 4GB file limit. But for testing if your sd card still works it should be totally fine. Once the card works, you can format it to exFat in windows.

Try to use SDFormatter. Try different options. If it doesn't help, may be your beloved sd card is (physically) broken.
Fat32
I think you have to format your SD into fat32
