I just got an OPO a few days ago it didn't exactly blew me away. The very first thing I did was install Facebook and Tapatalk to check on scrolling performance (nothing else touched), and surprisingly scrolling was quite jerky, even more so when scrolling through a thread in Tapatalk. I don't know why this happens, I expected it to be extremely smooth for the specs it has.
My Nexus 4 on the other hand has optimized bionic/dalvik libraries and franco kernel so maybe these two are boosting my Nexus 4 quite substantially. I still however get jerky scrolling in Facebook/Tapatalk.
Even so, it doesn't make much sense, my Nexus 4 scored a 21,216 in Antutu, whereas my OPO scored a 38,217 - big difference here but it isn't reflected in real world usage. I swear my Nexus 4 is opening things quicker when I have both phones side-by-side doing the same actions, Nexus 4 is opening things such as Battery Usage or Settings marginally quicker than my OPO.
The next thing I did was enable ART on my OPO and the jerky scrolling was eliminated. I would like to stick with ART but I'm dependant on Xposed framework somewhat.
Most people here seem happy with the OPO in other areas apart from the yellow tint and touchscreen issues, but none have commented on its performance, oddly. Is this because everyone switched to ART once they got theirs? I would have assumed most owners to be using out of the box settings, that is, Dalvik included.
What has your OPO performance been like? Are you satisfied with it?
You could try using Franco kernel if you're remaining on stock 11S and then use dalvik. I prefer art because it'll be the default in Android L anyways. I don't have any stutters or lag.
It's not opo that's the problem, it's the app. It's known that those app and sure problems, try forcing gpu rendering, it could help with lag on Tapatalk if you experience any.

Exactly. No matter how powerful a device is there's a limit on how much you can fix by brute force only.
Plus any Nexus 4/5 is going to be as smooth as you can get in Android.
The battery life alone is a world of difference.

Hey everyone!
Sorry if I do or say something wrong or in a wrong place, as this is my first post here and I really need your help.
I have just received my Nexus 5. I was loving it so far, but I have recently noticed a weird problem - the youtube videos in HD were really choppy. That is when I have decided to get AnTuTu and test my device with it. 23k!? That is barely more than Galaxy Note 2. Something is definitely wrong with my device and I can't seem to find what. Please help!
I don't see a problem here.

Is it supposed to score that low? I may be missing something, but shouldn't it score higher than SGS3?
And what about the jerkiness of the videos on youtube?

mine score around 22k, and work awesome
I did 3 runs of Antutu.
Run #1 22k
Run #2 29k
Run #3 26k
Just ran it again after making sure every app was closed, 29k.
Hit your multi task button and swipe close every app then try it.
No idea why its random.
YouTube is buttery smooth here. I don't see how it's normal if it's choppy on one of the fastest CPU. I would try a factory reset.
Most people including me have noticed good performance in everyday usage, but poor results with benchmark such as Antutu.
My investigation involved monitoring soc (cpu) temperature and clock frequencies.
I observed that the standard kernel that comes with Kit Kat has thermal management that aggressively throttles CPU clock frequencies when the temperature exceeds 63°C.
This will cause the clock frequencies to be reduced in an attempt to lower temperatures. With a benchmark like Antutu that causes all four CPU cores to be heavily loaded and run initially at maximum clock rate of 2265 MHz this will lead to clock frequencies dropping as far as 1100 MHz occasionally, with substantial drop in performance.
I have been unable to determine if the Adreno 330 is also subjected to similar thermal throttling.
Custom kernel will provide the way to overcome this for those willing to modify.
The highest Antutu score I've seen on their website is 30000, which is some way below other Snapdragon 800 powered phones, and most scores are below 25000, which can be bettered BT Snapdragon 600

Thank you for your responses. I am not the only one then.
But I would still like to find out what exactly is wrong with youtube. Every video's choppy, there's a lot of stuttering and frame skipping. Launching videos from Chrome feels better, but not much.

Mine runs everything perfectly smooth, but when I plug in to charge, everything is choppy and laggy. Happens on home screen/app drawer/apps

Don't forget the recently documented "optimizations" that most manufacturers are building into their devices. Benchmarks are beginning to mean less and less as manufacturers have discovered their use in marketing.

Yeah, I get that.
But mine still performs horribly in videos. I have just done the factory reset - to no avail. Youtube is completely unwatchable. I have tried to plug the charger in (just to rule out some weird power-saving issue) - same problem. Haven't tried to launch a video from the device itself yet though. I have also tried Real Racing 3 just to test the performance, and I guess it's OK. It's not prfect, as I can feel some framerate drops, but it is nowhere near as bad as the Youtube jerkiness.
No idea what's going on. Seems like no one else is having such a problem. Probably gonna have to return the device.
Just got 100% yea me! But just wanted to compare performance.
I played mostly at 80% resolution and 80% draw distance. Max graphics with dynamic lighting.
Same settings I played the original GTA on and minus rain that experience was very smooth.
Anyway I would say it was relatively smooth sailing 25-35 ish fps (guessing) but some places like Little Hatti and at random times from just running around the game would start to crawl. I know this is a port though so...
Overall I was content and enjoyed the experience but was kinda thinking coming into the Nexus 5 I could play something like this with no drop off. Was that silly thinking?
Anyone else out there care to post their experience?
BTW I am stock rooted. No custom kernels yet.
I think the phone could do much better in a freezer.
With "TT" in account your results seem good but FPS will get consistently slower over time so best to play in short bursts. :good:
Governor settings.
Best setup for gtas'.. Lock on 2 cores only, kernel allowing, since the game only uses 2, this will keep heat down. Setup ondemand governor to non aggressive race back to zero settings.. down_differential 30, all up_thresholds' 70
I played for quite a while yesterday with no drop in performance at max settings, i had a couple of freezes but only in cut scenes, the audio was still playing but the video stopped. Not an issue for me though

Where was your resolution and draw at? 100%? Can you do me a favor and run through the little shacks and houses in little hati and tell me if your game crawls to a halt?
Um ok.... Won't be for awhile since I'm at work.... I don't think i have access to that area yet

Hey guys,
Have you noticed that your Nexus 5 slows down time to time? Couple times per day my phone slows down significantly and starts almost to micro stutter. UI is not working 60fps and everything seems just little bit laggy. And again maybe hour or two later my phone feels super smooth. Is there some background processes in Android which causes this behavior or is it something in Nexus 5? If there is something that can be done, please share your tips.
questions go into q&a, not general.
and there is no right answer for you, as it can be one of a multitude of things. only you know what apps you have installed and what you use. it even can be your phone just freeing ram, if your ram is full. i can literally think of 20n things off the top of my head that can cause that. what info you gave us, pretty much none, wont get you any answers.

State ROM, kernel, mods used.
I had the same experience if I flashed mods such as optimised dalvik/bionic and Qualcomm latest GPU drivers.
Also had this when I used Xposed framework. Certain modules would just go haywire after a certain amount of hours.
Another thing is that certain ROMs, degrade system performance as the number of features rises up. So it might be your ROM.
Well this happens on every rom (even stock), with and without any mods or custom kernels, and that is precisely why I am asking. I am well aware that custom roms, kernels and mods can cause this kind of behavior, but this thing happens in all configurations. It happens whether I have installed 2 or 75 apps. Move thread if necessary.

Is your storage almost full? NAND tends to slow down considerably as it fills up just like with SSDs.
Most likely though it's a service you have running.
This is one thing i have noticed that power saving mode lags a lot more in official uptate than in preview lpx13d. Has any one noticed this. Also does changing kernel n tuning cpu governors n frequencies affect power saver? i generally underclock to 2ghz and my governer is elementalx i/o is row and buffer size is 512
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I think it's normal.
If you want no lag when using Power Saving Mode, use faux kernel.
Because it has turbo boost, and works good with Power Saving with no lag.
Yeah, I noticed lag too when battery saver was on too. I did not even have but maybe 3 apps open in recent apps. It definitely was not just a little lag either, it was pretty bad. I definitely would not say that is 'normal' considering when you put an M8 or any other device in battery saving mode, it lags absolutely nothing like that. I wonder if it is because they have the CPU too under clocked for battery saving more. Regardless of the cause that is definitely something Google needs to work out.

You can try what I suggest above. On Lollipop, the one I know is stock kernel is not the best anymore.
I personally use Hybrid Kernel. For the moment, I see it as the most updated kernel simply because all of the drivers are updated, and there's some CAF code but it works on AOSP wonderfully.
Keep in mind, there are plenty of other good kernels and I have tested them all. This is what works best for ME.
I noticed the same issue with my S4 5.0.1. Turning on power save mode causes lag especially when scrolling anda tapping. I used Root Booster in Battery mode also if it makes the lag worse.
So I finally decided to root my G Flex 2. I've been talking about disabling cores for a while. Thought it may help the thermal throttling issues. Once I rooted the device I downloaded "Multicore CPU" and started disabling cores in a couple different combos. I've finally settled on disabling cores 4 and 7. Since I disabled the two cores heat has not been an issue and cores 5 and 6 are running at 2ghz. Reduced lag, and benchmarks have shot up some. Personally enjoying the lagless environment. Figured I'd post my experience with this. I'm hoping overall battery life will be better as well. Won't know for a day or two though. Oh and it stays cool while charging and in use. It used to get really hot before.
Anyone else have any experience with this?
So here are results of disabling cores and thermal throttling or lack there of now.
I also want to note that my benchmark scores were lower than the note 4 after some updates until now

Ok on YouTube mine gets a bit warm but not as hot as in Chrome (on normal sites, nothing fancy). Watched twitch in Full hd for an Hour yesterday without any heat...seems like some Apps are better optimised for the sd810 than others
Are we getting a sd808 by disabling 2 Cores?

I am also coming from oneplus, I must say you are sadly right. Newer is not necessary better in this case.
I hope with some optimalization this can be a Ferrari.
I was already let down by LG a few years before, let's hope it is not the case now.

I have the AT&T version of this phone and for me cores 4,5,6 and 7 are always on except when the cpu goes above 36C then cores 4 and 7 automatically get disabled. I'm also not experiencing any lag and it's actually very smooth and fast. It also doesn't get very hot unless I run Antutu benchmark like three times in a row. What kind of CPU temperatures are you guys seeing when your phone gets hot?

My phone is around 40C when playing games or browsing the Web.
With another firmware wersion I was getting temperatures around 48C. That was Killin the battery in minutes.
This is what I deal with when all 4 cores are running
