If you are on stock KitKat 4.4.2, then your bootloader is locked and you can't run any custom ROMs except one KitKat based touchwiz ROM through safestrap. Sprint bootloader is not locked which allows you to run a custom ROM. So no, you cannot run a jellybean ROM on a Verizon S3 with KitKat.

Moar is definitely a great rom. It does suck that now especially with VZW phones that most are locked right away.

You need to tell us what rom version you're running? Go into settings->about phone and report the rom version.(like 4.1.2 or 4.3 etc..)

Is this true for all 4.3 or just those with Knox? Last night I was trying to update from cm10.2 to cm11 and realised that trwp needed an update. After a some failed boots pf cm10 and 11 I decided to just go back to stock since I need it during the day..and unknowingly put the dreaded 4.3 on via odin. I understand how to get root...but what I really want is my bootloader again. Did I screw myself by putting 4.3 on? Thanks.

You're stuck on 4.3 now, your bootloader is locked. Using Odin to load a stock 4.3 firmware is the exact same thing.
You should've odin'd a stock 4.1.2 firmware, but it's too late now.

I'm in the same boat with 4.3 - rooted with saferoot, but when I went to download safestrap to flash the only customs roms I can (TW), I don't see a download for the SCH-i535. The closest I see is for S4. Where can I get the right Safestrap download?

Awesome. This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm pretty set on doing this now, but I'm trying to find a solid rom to flash once I get Safestrap. Any suggestions? All I've found so far are S4 roms. The Google Play Edition rom looks pretty good.

Don't flash any ROMs for the S4 onto your S3. Through safestrap you can flash almost any of the 4.3 TW (ML1) ROMs found in this section:

If he rooted his Verizon S3 on VRBMF1 4.1.2, then he could use EZ Unlock v1.2 to unlock the bootloader. Or he could use Casual.

Great. Now if they accidentally or intentionally take the 4.3 VRUCML1 OTA, using EZ Unlock will cause a bootloader hard brick. Please make sure your friend understands this.

Correct, downgrade not possible. Flashing custom TW 4.3 ROMs is possible using safestrap
I know it's possible through Odin. You will most likely lose your data.

So just to be clear I can flash 4.3 roms? I gather that rooting/flashing/recovery is a bit "easier" and less risky without the 4.3 update. I have flashed an old phone before (HTC Incredible 2) so I have some experience, but if there is significantly more risk involved with a 4.3 phone then I'll probably look for a phone that hasn't taken the update yet.

Mostly correct, TouchWiz 4.3 roms only, not aosp 4.3 roms, it's a big difference.

Since I'm on a locked boot loader NC1 or ML1 shouldn't matter .. can i install a 4.4.4 or 4.4 rom ? i know i would have to do it thru safestrap but would it be possible ? i thought i could only flash 4.3 touchwiz nothing higher ?

No, you cannot flash a 4.4.4 or 4.4 ROM. If you are on 4.3 NC1 or ML1, you are restricted to running only 4.3 touchwiz based ROMs through safestrap. Ever since the 4.3 ML1 update, different components of the phone (kernel, bootloader, etc.) are signed with a key which must match in order for the phone to boot up. That is why you are restricted to 4.3 touchwiz ROMs in safestrap. They have to be able to run off the 4.3 stock kernel. A 4.4 touchwiz ROM will not have the same key signature verification as a 4.3 touchwiz ROM. And you are definitely not capable of running any kind of AOSP ROM now that your bootloader is locked.

Thanks for that reply I needed it.. Next question is why are there services out there that can downgrade the NC1 OR ML1 baseband? They could be scams but I'm just wondering.. Is it just the fact that a device or hacker hasn't found the correct exploit?

You are limited to TW based ROMs, they must be the same version of android. You can ODIN to stock 4.3 and take the 4.4 OTA or KIES

Kies is Samsungs desktop application for doing OTA updates.Its does the same thing as an OTA or ODIN.
If you want to use safestrap stay on 4.3 until the developers have it all worked out for 4.4 .

There is a service that people claim to be able to downgrade the bootloader to 4.1 from 4.3 so you can unlock your bootloader.
I think mobile tech videos does it, and if they offer it then it wouldn't be a scam. Just not sure how much it would cost, or if it'd be worth it to you.

I'm trying to find a touchwiz 4.4.2 ROM for my s3 verizon variant. It looks like the only one close is Alliance, but that's on 4.3.
I have the s3 with an unlocked bootloader, and I really liked touchwiz, but want to keep the unlocked bl. I'm thinking about going back to stock, but I'm afraid that once I do and get the locked bootloader, it's curtains after that.

So it looks like there's nothing out there for 4.4.2, or even 4.4. The best I've seen is 4.3 and probably cleanrom. Looks like I'll be sticking to that until something else comes out, but it doesn't look good.

There aren't any yet. Devs can't get a 4.4.2 TW ROM booting on an unlocked device.

He has an unlocked bootloader. Says right in the OP of that thread the ROM is not compatible for unlocked bootloaders. Superlite ROM is only for use with a locked bootloader and safestrap. Wiz, DO NOT flash superlite ROM.

If you are on an unlocked bootloader, there aren't any. If you are on a locked bootloader, there are two you can flash through safestrap. They can be found in the Android Development section.

Be happy then and keep the unlocked bootloader, even without the ability to update to a 4.4 tw rom your really not missing out on much. There are plenty of other custom roms that are even better than tw at least in my opinion

yaa..thats true..i'm using p.a 4.5 beta 2 rite now..but..now im goin on a vacation..so have to take some pictures..touch wiz wont freeze the camera rite? i used cleanrom..and that was good actually..so..i was thinking 4.4 touchwiz wud be better..cuz after using 4.4.4 kitkat on my device..rolling back to cleanrom(4.3) makes me feel like crying D
