[Q] Noob needs Bionic SIM help - General Questions and Answers

So I have a droid Bionic my friend went through much pains to root. Fast forward a year and I probably got a virus on it and it ran like crap. So I went ahead and reset it to factory default. I have no phone plan or data plan anymore.
After the factory restore, when I boot up the droid, it says -Safe Strap: Disabled- in bold red text with the little robot lower down. Next I get a screen that says -Welcome; Select your language:- I select English and hit -Start- and I'm then greeted with a new screen -A SIM card is needed to operate this phone. Please turn off your phone and insert you SIM card.- and I get two options -Emergency Call- and -Power Off- and that's it.
So it's safe to assume my phone is still rooted and I'm pretty certain I need to trick my phone into thinking it has a SIM so that it boots up. I have tried putting in other SIM cards with data plans and it gives me the same crap. I'm not a complete techno noob I just know next to nothing about modding phones in any capacity. Any advise or direction would be much appreciated. Thank you.

you put a sim in from the carrier the bionic was made for or is compatible with and it didnt work?
do you have the old sim you used to use in the bionic?
i get a new sim every time i get a new phone and keep the burned one, as it will still activate the phone even though it doesnt work otherwise.
im pretty sure there is a trick that will get you past that screen. it involves tapping the 4 corners of the screen counter clockwise. i dont recall where to start, try searching for more info on it.
as for the root, yea, i remember rooting my bionic last time, and it sucked a lot lol. anyways, it "should" still be rooted, just put a superuser app back on and confirm. the su app is gone, thats why ss is disabled.

Yeah the original sim is in the bionic. I haven't had a phone plan in my bionic for years and just used it off wifi to get great apps when I have wifi. I've tried new sims and old.

Flashing Killed My SIM

I just flashed to ConfusedStu Vista 1.3, everything went well until I got through the customization screen and now my sim has just an exclamation point by it. I took the sim out and put it in my razr and it is reading fine in that. Anybody have any ideas that can help me out. Even though I dont have a lot of posts Im not new to doing this or to the site, Ive been flashing my wizard for 2 years now and my tilt for about the last month and a half. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I also will say I tried to reflash radio 1.65 and that didnt help either.

i usually remove sd and sim before i flash a new rom. What does it say or show on the screen when the sim is inserted? and what does it say on the screen when the sim isn't inserted? If it says the same thing i can't help you.
try a hard reset too.
When the Sim is inserted is says nothing, just has the exclamation point by the signal meter and and x by the data connection. When the sim is not in the phone at all it gives me the no sim inserted emergency call if provider supports it. I tried to reflash the rom with the SIM out and still get the same result??? Kinda Screwy
most likely its the phone that's the problem. because if your sim was fried it wouldn't work in the razr. the razr couldn't be able to recognize the sim card at all if it was fried.

you may need to install another radio that is compatible.
Is this a new or an older SIM? Check the gold contact points on the bottom. I've used a pencil eraser to go over mine and have gotten a SIM that had stopped working ot start working again (back on my Wizard). The local AT&T stores by me (not the Spring ones, but the true AT&T ones) are good about replacing sim cards for free when I've had issues (I had a sim card out one day and my dog got hold of it off the table. Called the local AT&T store and they guy laughed then said bring it down and he'd give me a new one. Waived the $25 charge. My wife has had her sim card replaced for free also in the past from the same store. YMMV).

Tried that one too...lol. I searched and searched, I tried different ROM's with their respective radios and still same results. Looks like Im flashing back to stock and Warranty has another one coming. The funny thing is, it still tells me I have a voice mail and shows my number under the phone screen, which tells me its reading the SIM

yeah they would LLLLOOOOOVVVVEEEEE that. LOL I just tried with the stock ROM and the SPL changed back, everything to stock and still no luck. Still get the voicemail icon and the message that I have a Voicemail though.
try going into settings>personal>phone> then to the network tab and select find network with stock rom and radio.

Check and see if the phone is turned off. Happened to me a couple of flashes in a row, sometimes you end up with the phone turned off. Just open the comm manager and turn it back on.

Tried this once and it didnt do anything, hard reset, tried searching again, went and grabbed a drink and after about 15 minutes it found network and all is good. Now back to flashing my 6.1 ROM. Ill never learn, but its so fun to have a phone that takes over all me free time on the road.
Thanks to all that helped and had some ideas. Thats why I love this place. Thank you.
the first thing you do after you flash a new rom is hard reset, now I am using the same rom as you are and all you have to do is go into your commmanager and turn flight mode OFF, push the button with the picture of a phone on it, then your phone will customize your connections to your carrier

I have already flashed My tilt with just about every ROM out there just to have fun and see what the differecnces were, WITH NO PROBLEMS. Then I tried to flash it with the new ROM and had the problem. I appreciate you trying to help but how you gonna end with calling me a n00b, when I have more posts than you and have been here a lot longer. But thanks for the help.

ya that was unnecessary. he clearly knew what he was talking about (but maybe didn't explore different avenues before asking). in addition, its not necessarily true that the phone customizes for you.

I flash only via sd card and I have never taken out my sim card and I have never had one glitch at all. In my humble opinion, flashing via sd card is much quicker and safer.

[Q] Kyocera Zio Semi-bricked

Hey guys I was messing around with my Zio m6000 which I got recently but was unable to find software recovery mode even though I tried all possible button combos. (FYI I have up down volume rockers a send key a camera key and an on off /cancel button) my home button is screen/software touch Dependant.
I recently rooted it and decided I would make a backup image. I used clockworks free app to try to create a backup image. I selected a phone model close to my phone specs because my phone model is new it didn't have it as a choice. the phone rebooted.
That is it. There is no recovery image yet and I am unable to get passed the kyocera boot screen.
I can access 2 things:
1. is a blue screen which says "Modem download mode !!" when I plug that in via usb it says on my pc "kyocera Diagnostics interface (COM9)"
2. fastboot mode.
I have done a couple google searches but to no avail. I am wondering if there is some way to load recovery mode or to perform a factory reset Via USB or SD card or using some SDK commands?...
help me out here guys

Are you kidding? I sure hope you're kidding. You're not supposed to Flash a ClockWork Recovery Image to your phone if it isn't meant for your phone... come on. That's basic. But on the good side, I'm sure if you FastBoot Flash something you should be able to get it to load. You gots the uhm, BootLoader working?
BTW - How is that phone? I was considering it, but it looks kinda crappy (no offense?)
I cant seem to get to a boot loader. The last time I tried it via some software it factory reset my phone. The only thing I can think of is that they have tried to make it hard for modders. not to say its impossible but just hard.
in my defence about the backup, First off I was just trying to back up my phone.. I had good intentions. 2ndly I didn't think the profile mattered because I thought I was just going to make an image of MY phone by doing it.
This good news you speak of, I hope we can get to it without a boot loader :I
The phone is decent however it can be a bit sluggish at times and the CDMA network only works in the carrier browser and not for apps ect. The GPS works well and is solid. Battery life is decent when im not using it otherwise I can use the web on the phone via Wifi for about 3 hours before it goes dead Disappointing.
Thanks for the reply and please if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Hmm, care to share the details on how you can root the Zio?
Sure anyone who can help me fix my phone will find out.
::Bump:: Im still needing some help on this guys. Help me out please?

Well guys at the end of my rope here with my phone so I gave it to my gf to play with the buttons for a bit.... she actually figured out how to get it to boot! up button and power button loaded a blue screen that flickered and and went to the carrier screen and booted... all my settings are saved phone is still rooted Woot!
I have actually been looking how to get into recovery mode JUST because I didn't have anything to do and was searching for Zio stuff, and it brought me here lol.
Power + Up...
At least you posted this on the forum.
I'm really hoping that more people pick up the Zio.
I would hate to be the only one interested in tinkering with the phone.
Just a case of being a little too late lol.
Glad you found the fix though.
Good Luck
If you don't mind me asking, what did you use to backup your phone?
I am pretty new to the Android scene (Not new to phone hacking but I'm new to Android) and I know that some applications will work and some wont.
I want to make a proper backup before I start messing around with things I know nothing about.
Okay a little clarification / interesting news...
1. Power + up button worked 1 time to let me boot my phone... I tried to restart my phone to test and see if I could still use my phone and it will not get past the Kyocera screen again.
2. Power + up does not boot the phone to any type of menu or recovery mode it only downloads modem data over the air,
so guess what?
3. After using power + up I apparently switched my phone to some type of Verizon pre paid phone which could not call out or receive calls. Wifi still worked and all my apps / data was still there.
4. I am going to have to replace my phone and not make the same mistake again.
5. I have documented this whole process and will be releasing a guide after I can get my new phone going. A guide to rooting and backing it up after I successfully back it up.
6. The program that I used was clockworks recovery free but the problem is they do not have the Kyocera Zio m6000 phone model! DO NOT USE CLOCKWORKS RECOVERY UNTILL HE HAS YOUR PHONE MODEL! You will be right where I am.
I’m going to try a couple more things before I break down and get a new phone...
I will keep you all posted.

Yeah man, those recovery images are phone specific apparently so I would imagine it could do some bad things to let one rip. Maybe shoot [email protected] an email?
I did the same thing, I figured out the way to boot it up but now I am on a verizon network, like the op. I am going to call Cricket customer support and see what they can do.
EDIT: Here is the fix
Go to Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Networks and choose home only. Now exit and open the Dialer and press*228 send and let the phone program.
EDIT 2 : Ok well this gets the phone working but does not restore Mobile Web/Data services. Returned phone to cricket and had it replaced free of charge
I am facing the EXACT same issue. I cant get it to boot for the life of me. Its stuck with Kyocera/Modem mode/ or fast boot and thats it. It's just driving me insane. Clockworks free did this to me too
This phone is OVER!
so after having many problems with this phone and the many replacements I just got the HUAWEI Ascend! Its tons better! many of the problems i had with Zio are totally solved by swapping it to the Ascend. I recommend to anyone thinking about Zio, Save your money and buy an Ascend!
Dont even buy the replacement phone for the zio if you have the chance! A replacement costs 80 bucks if you upgrade to the Ascend its $120. Well worth the money in my case.

[Q] What Have I Done?!!?

Hi. This is my first time posting. I apologize in advance, im going to come across as a noob.
I got tired of waiting for google to get 2.3 to the N1 users. I decided it was time to unlock and root my phone, after all thats what it was designed for. Up until this point the phone was stock with all updates. I thought one touch root no longer worked. I dont know why i thought this. I used a guide to work through it. I cannot post links otherwise i would. ilikemygooglephone . com is where it came from
Everything worked according to this guide until I completed it and powered my phone on for the first time. I thought I was going to see a stock wiped nexus one...Instead I got shafted.
The phone reboots randomly. It happens quickly and unpredictably.
Notification bar will never slide down. If i try to the phone lags but never shows notifications.
No 3g
No wifi
The phone says I have no service (selected network tmobile unavailable) although I can still make and receive calls.
The sd card will not mount. I cannot access it on the phone. When pluggen into my laptop the phone will charge but wont give me the option to access the sd card.
At times the graphics are buggy and dont operate properly
There are probably other problems that i am forgetting but I think this says enough. Since i cannot access the SDcard I really dont know what to do.
Im sorry if this thread is in the wrong place or happens to be a previously answered question. I just really like my phone and I hope its not wasted. Can someone tell me what I did wrong or how i can get this right.
YEAH i noobed it.
I freaked out on the above issue for about 5 hours. Now I believe i have everything back to normal. My problem was i didnt load the proper superboot. Once i found the FRG83 one and redid the process using that instead it worked fine. Either i was using the wrong superboot or i had a corrupted download somehow.
Feels good to figure it out on my own though....i feel...less noob.....NAH

Verizon is sending my 4th GSIII

First one was hacked almost immediately. Ended up perma-roaming with an IMEI of 0.
They replaced that with a new one. Of course they wanted to re-up my contract and steal my unlimited data. I looked the guy dead in the eye and said "No, that's unacceptable." He said "but unlimited data isn't in the system." I said "There's no 'system' to it. I take my old SIM, put in in a new phone, and walk out." Then he wanted to tell me that wouldn't work, until I grabbed my old phone, SIM, and threw it in the new phone. Then the manager walked up and said I could go.
That phone lasted until yesterday. Capacitive touchscreen starts acting up. Reboot, nothing. Turn it off for a while (CM10 was running hot), and it started working for just a couple of minutes. Restored to stock and it stopped working all together.
Took that to the store, and they were nice once they figured out that this one didn't come from online, but another store. Then they realized it was out of 14 days so it had to be a refurb. Wanted to ship it with free 5 day, but I paid $15 for it to get here by 10am this morning. Not a bad deal, over all.
Refurb arrives this morning, pull the SIM, battery, etc from the old one, and boot it up. Capacitive layer works properly, so that's good. Skip all the My Verizon and Google stuff, because I want to get everything tested. Open a few apps, good. Press physical home button....
NOTHING. Press it again. Nothing. Third time (really pressing hard this time), it pauses for a few seconds then slowly crawls back to the homescreen.
Freaking refurb. I call up verizon and they were super nice. Explained this was my 3rd phone, and they are overnighting another GS3 for free. Let's hope this lasts a little longer.
Edit: just realized this was my first actual post! I've been a member here since I got my first smart phone: an HTC Touch with WM 6!
I'll bet those VZW reps are loving to see you come through the door
It's amazing how easy it is to get into the refurb vortex and not be able to get out. As you've seen, device after device has some inconspicuous issue that requires a return. These forums are loaded with these stories.
Hopefully the next one will be the one that keeps you happy, out of the VZW stores, and out of that vortex.
A QPST backup would have kept you out of this loop lol. So sorry to hear the struggle!

Yeah, I was in IRC while switching to CM10. invisibleK tried to help me out, but this was before the EFS or QPST fixes.
I too got the IMEI of 0 prior to QPST backups (ironically I got it from a TW rom, never flashed a AOSP rom. I think it was the lean Kernal.) I tried restoring my efs.sbn but I am stuck in roaming. If I Odin back to stock and take my phone back to a VZW will they give me a new one?
I got Verizon to do an even swap form a GNEX to a GS3 because of the connectivity issues it has had...free upgrade
no wonder verizon doesnt like people rooting their phones. op's fault
First two refurbs were your fault, hopefully with this 4th one it'll act right, and you won't mess it up.

Yeah, I'd like to say it's vzw's fault for locking things down, but it happens on other networks as well. Looks like a Samsung issue.

Yeah, they should replace it, just play dumb and make sure you're on stock. But you'll end up with a return if it's been more than 14 days, and you really don't want that. Instead, just use QPST to write your IMEI to your phone. You don't need a backup, just the number on the back of the phone.

How is a faulty capacitive layer on a touchscreen my fault? A ROM doesn't make a touchscreen go bad.

LG G2 shuts down during boot at random points

I have an LG G2 D800, with stock everything; I did something either interesting or dumb, and now it won't boot. I never rooted it because all the instructions were for Windows, and I use Linux, and never found anything that explained how to do it with Linux, if possible. But I now have a a usable Windows (Vista) installed in a VM, so maybe I can do something.
Here's what happened; I hope someone can help steer me in the right direction...
I finished my AT&T contract, and decided to move to Project Fi. I got a Nexus 5X, and got an unlock code for my G2, which I wanted to give to my wife's brother in China. So, I needed to get a non-AT&T sim to enter the unlock code. Here's where I went wrong. I was curious about what would happen if I used the Project Fi sim, and since I wasn't rooted, I didn't think it would do anything bad (silly me!). Well, it did. It crashed, so I removed the sim and turned off the phone. Now, it won't boot. It sometimes just shuts down immediately, sometimes after the LG logo, sometimes after the AT&T logo, and a few times, it made it all the way to the login screen before turning off. Never further than that.
I did a factory reset, tried starting in safe mode many times, and sometimes it gets to a screen saying it's updating Android, but has never made it past 20 files before turning off. By the way, if it was reset, how could it update Android - wouldn't the WiFi need to be set up?
So, I'm wondering what might be wrong, and what might fix it. Obviously, I'm willing to try anything at this point, as it can't get much worse. The phone is in perfect shape, and would make a nice gift (or sellable item), so I hate to lose it.
I'm pretty technically inclined, but I don't know much about phone tech. I know Linux pretty well though, so I can follow directions without too much babying. Or, just point me the right direction.
It did go into download mode, but right now, it seems like it doesn't want to do that.
Thanks to anyone that can help.

Greetings.
Thank you for using XDA Assist. I'm going to move this thread to the specific device Q and A forum. You should find expert help there. Good luck!
