[Q] Cracked Screen Question - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
Recently i got careless and i accidentally cracked my nexus 5 screen after dropping it on the ground
Currently the touch screen works but there is a problem. I am unable to answer calls as the screen goes black and does not turn on again until the person has hung up or until i reset the phone. Also when i try to call out the screen turns black as well and exhibits the same symptoms as listed above.
From people who have had experience with cracked Nexus 5 screens, do you think replacing the digitizer + lcd will fix this issue or did i screw up something big
Thanks

It sounds like the cracked glass is affecting the proximity sensor. Replacing the screen /digitizer should fix the problem. Replace the whole thing including the bezel.

Any chance you could explain why the bezel also needs to be replaced as well?

It's easier to use the screens that come with the housing, you just switch internals and pop the back on. As for oem replacement screens with housings, I've read mixed reviews. Some say theirs is perfect. Others complain of different textures on the housing, or missing ear speaker mesh. Some say their replacements have massive light bleed. If it were my phone I'd pay the extra 25 to 50 bucks and send it to lg for repair. They charge 150 dollars. Then you are guaranteed to have it be perfect again. Plus their work and parts are warrantied. Play it safe and send it to lg imo.
Edit: Also if you did break anything else they will fix that as well.

fuze screen (damage?), at&t warranty (crap?)

I searched the forums and google and couldn't find an image similar to what is happening to my fuze.
So yesterday I noticed a problem with my fuze screen, and i don't know if i can't explain the problem or what, but at&t is convinced it's damaged and will charge me a bunch if i even try to send it in.
There are no cracks, scratches, whatever. (I wish i could take a pic, but the only cam i have is the phone)
The problem is that the surface of the screen (I think the soft touch screen top) seems to have a thin layer of 'something' in there. It is the same shape as the screen, centered, and about 70% of the screen's size. The effect is something like the shimmer/rainbow from a very thin layer of oil on water. (thin film interference?) Anyways, the touch screen still works, the lcd still works, the glass isn't cracked, and I have no idea what happened. I use a screen protector and am very protective of my baby.
I'm thinking I need to order a new digitizer and replace that? ($25 and some labor doesn't sound bad after talking to AT&T about what i would get charged if they decide it's physical damage)
I dunno, if anyone has experience with damage like this or at&t or replacing digitizers and has any words to help me, either with explaining what happened or what i should do, that would be much appreciated.
I had the EXACT same problem on my fuze. It looked like the layers of the screen began to seperate. AT&T scared me that they would charge me for this so I sent it directly to HTC and they replaced the screen at no cost to me...took about 2 weeks.
AT&T Warranty agents are trained to be cautious in regards to damage to devices as the mail program doesn't leave much(any) option once you send the phone back for the exchange. It's either no-damage/no-charge or damage/charged, after which you cannot go back on the exchange.
My advice is to see if there is a Device Support Center in your area.

I went to one with my possibly damaged Fuze and they took a look at it and exchanged it without any "possible" charges jargon.
If that isn't an option, you could buy a pre-paid phone to use while you send it in to HTC as TheSopranos16 did for repair.
Good luck!
Sir, the problem you have is this:

I only hope my xperia doesn't get it.
i have this same exact problem. its technically called a newton ring. att wanted $500 to fix it and the htc rep told me that whenever they encounter this they usualy dont cover under warenty because it is due to pressure on the screen and it would cost something like $300 to fix. so i basically said forget it and now im stuck with it.

[Q] Screen Replacement

I managed to break the screen on my Optimus 3d last night, not sure if it was dropped or ran over. I found it face down in my driveway this morning and to my horror when I flipped it over the screen was completely smashed, however the phone is still working fine, minus the never ending ghost call issue.
What make the situation worse is Rogers just sent me out a replacement phone yesterday and I have to send this one back, in the next couple days.
So I called a repair centre and they wanted $190 to repair the phone, and stated they would need to replace the LCD and the glass screen. I know there is nothing wrong with the LCD screen, phone functions and all colours are good, just has broken glass.
My question is, can I repair just the glass without replacing the LCD? I have found the screen for around $30 on ebay. Based on watching the how to on youtube it doesn't look like too difficult of a job.
me too i have broke my glass of my phone and they said like your prize to replace thre glass but in my country crunncy and the screen work perfectly I don't know why they want to change the screen too it's annoying

If your LCD is working you only need the digitizer replaced (phone front + touch screen) which costs you around 20/30$ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement...080?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c2d78e968 .
My touchscreen was broken (randomly pressing things on the screen) and I think the 2nd hand shop I got it from only replaced the digitizer I think based on the small dust I see on my screen.
This only works if your LCD doesn't show blurry or (partially) black (damaged).

Cracked Screen - Replacement part?

Well, I knew the time would come, I shouldn't be so picky on cases. I had my phone in my lap, hopped out of the car and heard my phone drop from my lap. Totally forgot it was there. One corner impact and it cracked my screen, which is disappointing because I drop my iPhone all the time and nothing happens to it. But, at least it's not the whole screen that's shattered, might even be a waste to replace it. The screen is responsive still.
With that said, anyone know where I can get a replacement screen or should I have a "professional" do it?
I'm looking at this:

That way there's no damage to the frame.
well yeah i want to know that too and how much it cost me to replace the screen

Ebay link looks OK. I guess you can replace screen yourself, if you have "straight" hands. Nexus 5 Teardown should helps you.
BTW, more Parts for Nexus 5.
Well, if you are going to try this one yourself, it's one of the "easier" ones. As long as you get the LCD assembly and frame that is already put together. On eBay, there are some vendors selling the the assembly + frame for $135. No really crazy tools are needed. Shouldn't be anything too catastrophic happen since you are changing the whole front of the phone. If you were trying to separate the top glass, I'd definitely advise against if you aren't a pro. If you absolutely don't feel comfortable with doing it and can be without the phone for a few days, then feel free to PM me, and we can discuss other options.
If you have steady hands, enough patience and some previous experience in disassembling phones (youtube could help a lot), it shouldn't turn out to be quite a big challenge.
I would advise though in some attention taking off the rear cover (it's not difficult, but if you apply too much pressure you might end up bending or breaking it). Same goes with the battery, which is attached to the back of the screen with some adhesive. Use a plastic tool for this, and try to peel it off with a strong and steady hand. Once you do that, it's only a few screws.
I think LG would fix it for $150 so $135 to fix it yourself eh. Unless you want the accomplishment, but I have never ventured into replacing a cracked screen.
Just got off the phone with LG, they said they can't price over the phone, they have to have a tech see the phone and they'll call with a quote. So, 2 weeks without a phone just to get a quote and maybe repaired if I want to spend that kind of money.
I am 80% positive that I have viewed a few post of them charging $150 for screen replacement. You aught to check in the thread "who dropped it" the answer might be there. Its in general. Hard to find with xda app.

Well, turns out once the screen is cracked it cracks easier now. As of now, the phone starts clicking on random things when the screen is touched.
I'm debating to either buy a new one and sell this one, should come out to the same price as buying a replacement screen once the cracked phone is sold.
What would you guys suggest? I can't send it in to LG as I need my phone and replacement screen + front housing is $200 to replace myself or $220 to replace by a professional.
I'm looking at this: http://www.etradesupply.com/lg-nexus-5-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly-with-frame.html
It seems to come with majority of everything and I just need to transfer over the antenna wires, motherboard and battery.
or

I'll have to transfer over everything, which they have a tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPuCmfhzgbg - which makes me nervous seeing this.

Can't you try the below? Quite easy to dis-assemble the phone, steady hands and proper screw driver + torx driver, use a hairdryer to warm up the glue connecting the battery + LCD to the digitizer
Sorry can't post external links to XDA due to post counter search Ebay for "Frame-LCD-Display-Touch-Digitizer-Screen-for-LG-Google-Nexus-5-D820-D821" results are between $108-$120 ...

[Q] Nexus 5 screen swap - replacement digitizer won't recognize touch

I purchased this replacement Screen/Digitizer/Frame assembly for the Nexus 5 after dropping my phone and cracking the glass front. While the glass was cracked, the digitizer and screen work fine and I can use the phone as-is apart from the shards of broken glass all over the touch surface.
When I received the part, I disassembled my phone (with much help from this guide), swapped over the parts to the new housing, hooked everything up, and the digitizer doesn't recognize any touches on the screen. I went around a couple cycles of swapping parts back into my broken phone and everything works like it should. Swap back, no touch.
I figured this must just be a defective unit, so I returned the parts and ordered another. I swapped everything into the new frame and I get the same result - screen works, digitizer doesn't.
I'm willing to accept that I'm doing something terribly wrong here. What troubles me is that every time I switch back to my existing phone screen, everything works like it should. If I was somehow plugging things in wrong or assembling the unit incorrectly I'd expect that it would apply to my existing screen too. At this point I've disassembled my phone, swapped the innards to the replacement screen, then swapped everything back 5 or 6 times now. Each time I do this, my existing screen works and the replacement screen won't register touch. As such, I find it hard to believe that I'm just assembling things wrong because somehow it works every time I put the old parts in, but never works with the new screen.
Does anyone here have any experience with screen swaps? The whole thing is really a straightforward procedure and there's not much to goof up that I can see. Does it even seem possible I could have received 2 screen assemblies with non-working digitizers?
Judging by the reviews, stay away
Looks non-oem as well lol
Most of the negative reviews there look to be fit issues. There are a number of little adhesive pads and rubbery bits that need to transfer over from the existing frame, and I strongly suspect that the people complaining about light leaks or fit issues probably didn't notice that the replacement part didn't include all those bits. None of the reviews that I read mention any problem with touch not working.
Exchange
I sent the vendor an email similar to my OP to see what they say, but I paid extra to get the Amazon Prime vendor on this part so returning it (again) should be no problem. I'll give them a chance to figure this out, but if not, maybe third time's a charm?

[Q] color issues after screen replacement

I replaced my nexus 5 screen after cracking it with a new lcd, digitizer, and the frame from amazon. tested the screen before re assembling the whole unit and all looked great. after getting it all buttoned up i found that after the screen sleeps and comes back on the colors are very distorted. Rebooted the phone and the color is accurate again, but again after the screen sleeps and comes back on the colors are distorted. I then tore it back apart installed my old crack screen and all is fine again. I am looking to see if anyone has come across this. I am assuming it is a bad display, but would like to see if anyone has any other suggestion on a possible problem before i return the display.
Bump: just because i'm returning the replacement screen tomorrow and ordering another if no input.
