hey there,
I have been having problems with my power button for quite some time and some weeks ago it totally stopped working. As my phone is rather old and worn I did not want to send it for a a repair shop (its out of warranty). I started disassembling it and realised that the power button came loose from the board behind the inner (blue/red) plastic cover located under the back case.
hence, if I apply the power button, it is not pressed, but its case moves down some milimeters.
my question is how to reconnect it to the board: glueing? soldering?
thanks in advance

I searched the forums for this issue, but seems like no one else has experienced this yet..!? I'm not sure how it happened, but just 2 days ago, my power button stopped responding. In other words, no matter how much pressure I put on it, or how long I hold it, my tablet will not turn on or wake up from sleep..! I'm not even sure how it happened. I just left it near on the floor propped up near my night stand earlier this week and the next morning I noticed I had a tough time turning my tablet on... (However, I did notice before this that sometimes my power button was way too sensitive and would ask if I wanted to power off the tablet, when all I did was press it for a second to put it to sleep. Guess, that was signs of eminent failure?)
And it's definitely a hardware and not a charging problem, since I can make my tablet turn on by removing it from the dock for a few secs and then reconnecting it, but obviously this is not acceptable. And other than that I don't know how else to turn it on...
I bought my tablet from Amazon, so I can't take it back to any store. Has anyone here had this problem before and tried to repair it themselves? Or has anyone at least tried to send their tablets in for repair to ASUS after unlocking the bootloader, rooting and loading a custom ROM? How did that go for you?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
amazon has a superb return policy - at least here in germany - should be no prob in the US - just call them so they open a RMA for you - or send it to asus directly.
good luck
cheers

My power button was giving me the power off / restart reboot which had been driving me crazy. Took the back off and investigated. The actual power button mechanism is flimsy and not well put together. After attempts with tape, with brief success the reboots returned. Today I looked again and took of the small bit of plastic with the silver button on it and noticed it was not central. Carefully peeled off the silver power button and attached it in the centre. Applied some tape and another piece in the plastic physical button mechanism to help it spring back. The result is my power button feels perfect and no more reboots so far.

Thanks for the input, guys. Glad to hear I'm not the only one and that it seems to be something I can try and fix on my own... I was mostly worried it was well known problem and ASUS wouldn't repair the devices that were tampered with or had unlocked bootloaders, but looks like they may not be thoroughly checking that. And my return window from Amazon expired in late June, so I figured it wasn't worth going through them anymore, but I've never had to that before, so I'm not sure...

I just pulled off the back (it has pressure pins, so i just use my nails, 'bcuz i don't have the plastic tool..), the Power Button is a 'lil switch, the top metallic part is held to the bottom part by a transparent piece of tape, if its not centered, just carefully remove it and place in the center.. If it the tape have enough glue to hold it back, You can use to same piece of tape to hold it back together.. If not, You can use a standard hmm (don't remember the name..) transparent tape to do the job... Hopefully the button keeps in place for while....
For the last week or so my power button/lock button has been intermittent, sometimes having to hit it 5 times or so to get the screen to unlock. Yesterday it all of a sudden stopped working and I couldn't unlock.
I am making this post to share my fix I found for the problem. Seeing how my phone is not under warranty because I have already replaced the screen, I took to tearing it apart and seeing what's going on. Hoping I could order a new power button, unfortunately the button is soldered onto the main board. Upon taking it apart I realized I had put a little shim in between the power button and the plastic button in the housing as a "rattle fix". This is what I am thinking caused the problem, this caused me to be putting too much pressure on the power button and caused it to over time break apart the back of the actual buttons metal housing on the main board. I removed the shim and it still did not work. I was going to take the main board and heat it at a low heat in the oven in hopes to reseat solder points, but before I did that I tried using a fine pair of needle nose pliers to crimp the back housing of the button back together. Luckily this worked. Unfortunately I do not have pictures, but if someone else has the same issue you should be able to see what I'm referring to by comparing the power button to the volume buttons on the mainboard, there is a metal housing around the actual button that is soldered to the main board, it has a slit down the back side of it that allows it to spread apart. The volume keys should be tight.
THE PROBLEM: Power/Lock button stops working
THE CAUSE(assumed): Nexus 5 power/lock button rattle fix
THE FIX: Using needle nose pliers to crimp the metal backing of the power button housing good and tight.
I hope this helps others out in the future as I'm sure I wont be the only one with this problem.
Thank you!!!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
Bumping this with thank yous because I went to a whole lot of other xda threads that suggested soldering on a new button or going for warranty etc. THANK YOU!!!
Super easy fix, works so well :good::good::good:
Just an FYI this worked for me for a short while, then I my power button stopped working again, I tried applying pressure with pliers again with no luck. Ended doing an RMA on my phone. Had a new one sent to me and they didn't say anything about my phone being opened up. I had even replaced the whole front half of the phone including screen, cameras, battery etc.
Greetings,
Since yesterday, I've been experiencing constant restarts, because the power buttons seems too sensitive. I've opened the phone and tried cleaning the button, but the problem still remains. Seems to be motherboard inner power button related, and not the outer button with inner button.
I've bought the phone last year in November. But I purchased it from the google play store in Germany, and I live in Belgium because the 32gb version wasn't yet available at that time. Would I still have a warranty? And I opened the phone and rooted it.
From searches on the internet, I don't think the problem can be solved, it's just broken. Can anyone help me?
Similar issue
My phone doesn't even boot, it reboots or shutdown while the OS is loading.
I've managed to start the phone once by hitting it :silly: and got the pictures by USB. After that I selected factory reset in order to erase all my stuff. The phone still doesn't boot after I moved it from the table that time.
I did not even rooted my N5, by the moment it has Android 5.0.1 (the first update after it got Lollipop).
It just lasted 11 months. Before the N5 I had the N4 and had similar issues, so I wont buy LG anymore.
Someone with a solution? Can I buy a replacement or something?
Thanks!
I had a similar problem due to a sticky power button. Since my phone was in warranty, they replaced the motherboard for free. My phone was all 11 months old when the problem surfaced. You should go to a nearby authorized Lg service centre
Power button sensitivity nexus 5
First of all power off your phone than remove your back cover then remove the board cover with a screw driver remove the battery power strip located on the second right below small plug one then remove all the other strips then you will find two small cables holding on your board both left and right unplug those and slowly pull up the board now remove your power button you will find a small two parallel bumbs flaten it now put back everything reverse the procedure of removing the parts and switch on the phone you will find little hard to switch it on but it will not switch off again to turn screen on after lock choose volume rock wake in settings easy then to turn screen off download some widget like screen off button .. Nexus 5 survives.. sorry for my English I know its bad. But still can help you ppl with that.plz share it Thanks
Hi All,
I have a Nexus 5 16GB that's about 14 month old.
The phone is now running Marshmallow 6.0.1 which was installed through OTA updates.
The device is stock and unrooted.
After accidently dropping the phone and cracking the screen, the phone was initially still working.
Then after a week or two the device began to reboot itself with increasing frequency until it became stuck in a loop.
I have attempted to enter the fastboot/recovery mode but as soon as the option appears the device reboots, so this was a no go.
I have investigated and ruled out the following issues i believe MAY not be the cause:
1. Battery - i have disconnected the battery and run on the mains but issue still occurs
2. Android - i have managed to boot the phone on a few occasions and it has functioned without issue for over 24 hours
I have removed the power button completely and the phone boots and functions fine. When it is placed back the reboot issue becomes intermittent.
I have now replaced the screen and initially the device was working for another 24 hours but the reboot issue has now begun again.
I have read many forums & the following guide by Eross - ''[SOLVED] Nexus 5 stuck in boot loop animation (Lollipop) , partially working with 4.4'' but my problem is the troubleshooting i've done so far does not conclusively point me in any one direction, as to what the possible issue could be.
My phone is out of warranty and i'm considering maybe sourcing a motherboard as a last resort, but only if this is what is required.
Please help!
Sounds like the power button is sticking or the outer plastic button is putting too much pressure on the power switch.
Where did you get the replacement screen? I purchased three from Aliexpress and the internal components didn't always line up properly.
I am using the original power button.
The replacement screen and frame was brought from Wholesaleworld on ebay.
I have read another thread on here were the user mentions SLIGHTLY separating the backing plastic material from the power button with a razor blade and this has solved the issue.
Has anyone else tried this with any success?
Or do you think its worth replacing the power button altogether?
Regards,
I had a power button on an n5 that was sticking, so I removed the motherboard from the phone, cleaned around the area with pure alcohol, and rapidly pressed and released the power button using slightly more pressure than normal for about 3 minutes. This solved the problem for me.
Replacing the motherboard power button would usually be a lot cheaper than a complete motherboard replacement.
If you want to replace the motherboard, I would look for a used n5 with a smashed screen and working internals.

I have never had the need to clean any internal components with rubbing alcohol, but your method seems to be the cheapest & most practical to try first.
I'm assuming the alcohol will not damage the board in anyway, but is there a method to applying the alcohol & cleaning i.e. using a lint free cloth maybe?
Also, if i was to replace the motherboard power button would this have to be soldered on?
I used a cotton swab lightly damp with alcohol to clean around the power button. Don't soak the area, give it time to dry, and importantly, disconnect the battery before doing anything to the board.
The motherboard button can be desoldered and a new button soldered in place of the original.
Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but here it goes. But an old s5 for about 60 bucks. It had the screen pretty damaged but the LCD worked fine. So since I like to tinker with things, I decided to see if I could fix it. I bought an inexpensive lcd separator, bought me some LOCA glue. I was able to separate the glass from the lcd without any apparent damage......err ....so to speak....I assembled the phone back. When I plug in the phone to a charger, I can see all the appropriate LCD lights. The screen shows the battery icon that shows up when a phone is charging. But the pressing the power button does nothing. I am pretty much stumped. I took everything apart to make sure things were connected right but I am not sure where to go with this...can anyone provide any advice?
PS. taking the glass off with the lcd separator (which is basically a hot plate) and a wire was really efficient. and a lot easier than trying to separate the glass with a guitar pick
I also bought a 10 dollar new glass for the phone...first time trying loca glue and I am proud to say that I had no air bubbles
It's my understanding that the ribbon cables behind the screen are extremely delicate and easy to damage. It is possible that you inadvertently damaged or severed them while removing the broken screen.
Try this link below, if you haven't already, and look through the steps to see if you may have missed something.

thanks guys, if it is a problem with the power button, I have purchased the back tray which houses the power button. Maybe that will work.
I might have a method. Assuming the home and volume buttons still work, you can hold volume down and home and then plug the device into a computer or any power supply that charges it. This will then open up download mode. The power cord will be acting as the power button here. Once there, press volume down to cancel and then it should reboot your phone to the OS.
