I searched the forums for this issue, but seems like no one else has experienced this yet..!? I'm not sure how it happened, but just 2 days ago, my power button stopped responding. In other words, no matter how much pressure I put on it, or how long I hold it, my tablet will not turn on or wake up from sleep..! I'm not even sure how it happened. I just left it near on the floor propped up near my night stand earlier this week and the next morning I noticed I had a tough time turning my tablet on... (However, I did notice before this that sometimes my power button was way too sensitive and would ask if I wanted to power off the tablet, when all I did was press it for a second to put it to sleep. Guess, that was signs of eminent failure?)
And it's definitely a hardware and not a charging problem, since I can make my tablet turn on by removing it from the dock for a few secs and then reconnecting it, but obviously this is not acceptable. And other than that I don't know how else to turn it on...
I bought my tablet from Amazon, so I can't take it back to any store. Has anyone here had this problem before and tried to repair it themselves? Or has anyone at least tried to send their tablets in for repair to ASUS after unlocking the bootloader, rooting and loading a custom ROM? How did that go for you?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
amazon has a superb return policy - at least here in germany - should be no prob in the US - just call them so they open a RMA for you - or send it to asus directly.

My power button was giving me the power off / restart reboot which had been driving me crazy. Took the back off and investigated. The actual power button mechanism is flimsy and not well put together. After attempts with tape, with brief success the reboots returned. Today I looked again and took of the small bit of plastic with the silver button on it and noticed it was not central. Carefully peeled off the silver power button and attached it in the centre. Applied some tape and another piece in the plastic physical button mechanism to help it spring back. The result is my power button feels perfect and no more reboots so far.

Thanks for the input, guys. Glad to hear I'm not the only one and that it seems to be something I can try and fix on my own... I was mostly worried it was well known problem and ASUS wouldn't repair the devices that were tampered with or had unlocked bootloaders, but looks like they may not be thoroughly checking that. And my return window from Amazon expired in late June, so I figured it wasn't worth going through them anymore, but I've never had to that before, so I'm not sure...

I just pulled off the back (it has pressure pins, so i just use my nails, 'bcuz i don't have the plastic tool..), the Power Button is a 'lil switch, the top metallic part is held to the bottom part by a transparent piece of tape, if its not centered, just carefully remove it and place in the center.. If it the tape have enough glue to hold it back, You can use to same piece of tape to hold it back together.. If not, You can use a standard hmm (don't remember the name..) transparent tape to do the job... Hopefully the button keeps in place for while....

My transformer has the power button which is terribly hard to press.
I was hoping it would have turned softer after some usage, but 1 month after, the power button is has hard to press as the first day.
Is that normal?
I' like to avoid RMA the tablet: it is perfect ( no light bleeds...)

I just found this app https://market.android.com/details?id=cz.destil.fixbrokenpb to replace power button with volume for switch on... It will limit power button usage to the strict minimum (unfortunately I cannot totally switch off or reboot with it).
It will allow waiting before rma the device, hoping asus assistance getting more expertise in operating on such devices

If it feels like it's alot of trouble then it's probably broken. - If you're within a retailers return policy then act on it ASAP.
Otherwise, do a RMA because that's not normal and app should not be required to simply ignore the matter. Cross your fingers you get a newer hardware version during the RMA process
I think you already know the answer but want someone reconfirm what you should do so I'm suggesting that you do an RMA because you shouldn't settle for less.

When I modded my tablet I noticed the button can *easily* get mis-aligned. It is a simple plastic cap with trim edge. If you push it at an angle (e.g. sideways) it can slip a little sideways resulting in this problem. It also has a slot in the center (behind button) to align, if yours has been bad since day 1 it might have slipped out of the slot, too.
When I re-assembled my tablet I put the side with buttons together first after carefully realigning and my buttons worked great.
I think this can be a common issue. If I was you, I would try using a pencil eraser to grip the button and slide back into position. It can be easily fixed by someone with skills & tools to disassemble and reassemble the tablet.
Whatever choices you make.... good luck

My power button has a strange behavior: whem i push it, i clearly hear the click (not as loud as the volume one, but button here is smaller and finger is all over the button), but nothing happens.
Tablet is covered by warranty, so i'll avoid opening it: let me try the chance with Amazon, then the standard procedure with Asus.
It's just a pity: no light bleeds, no speaker problem, mic working, display perfect, just fixed the flash perfs...
I do hope rma will not break anything.

They replied they apologize for my problem, and an order is underway for a new tablet with shipping for tomorrow morning

Yes, I also had the power button stop working. And, to make matters even better, I got into CWM (or CMW or whatever) to tried to put stock OS back on and got STUCK there. No power buttton, no ability in CWM to go to Backup menu to reflash stock, and no ability to reboot from the main menu!
The power button is cheap, cheap, cheap; you may have trouble getting it fixed if you've rooted (because rooting kills the warranty) and can't reflash stock.
Very disappointed with ASUS on this issue.

So, here is the problem, when you slightly press on the screen just below where the power button is, either the screen turns off or the power menu comes up. This just happens to be exactly where I put my thumb when holding the tablet, so I constantly get the power menu or turn off the screen on accident. This is an extremely frustrating problem, it happens non-stop right now. I've also noticed that the power button itself is messed up too, in that I don't even have to push it. If i just barely touch it with my finger it turns off the screen, it's like the button is stuck. Of course, I have already unlocked so getting a warranty replacement is out of the question. Just wanted to put this problem out there so other people know about it.
PS. anyone know of an app that will disable the power button? If not, I guess I'll open it up can physically disconnect it or something, just make sure it never gets turned off!, lol

how are you going to turn it on/off if you disable that button?
Well, I seem to have fixed it for now. The power button is actually three pieces, the plastic button, a small sticker with a tiny piece of foil on it, and a tiny contactor on the circuit board. The button pushes down on the foil, and this connects the two piece contact on the circuit board together to complete the circuit. It looks like the piece with the foil was too tight over the contact on the board, so anytime any pressure was put on it in the area of the power button, it would make the connection. I simply pulled the foil piece off (the sticker), and stuck it back on, but more loosely than before. For now everything works correctly with no accidental power button pushes. However, all the little plastic tabs that hold the back on the tablet are apparently one time use, because they are all broken now, and the back is barely hanging on. Guess it's time to find a case that I can use with the dock so I don't lose the back off this thing!

For the last week or so my power button/lock button has been intermittent, sometimes having to hit it 5 times or so to get the screen to unlock. Yesterday it all of a sudden stopped working and I couldn't unlock.
I am making this post to share my fix I found for the problem. Seeing how my phone is not under warranty because I have already replaced the screen, I took to tearing it apart and seeing what's going on. Hoping I could order a new power button, unfortunately the button is soldered onto the main board. Upon taking it apart I realized I had put a little shim in between the power button and the plastic button in the housing as a "rattle fix". This is what I am thinking caused the problem, this caused me to be putting too much pressure on the power button and caused it to over time break apart the back of the actual buttons metal housing on the main board. I removed the shim and it still did not work. I was going to take the main board and heat it at a low heat in the oven in hopes to reseat solder points, but before I did that I tried using a fine pair of needle nose pliers to crimp the back housing of the button back together. Luckily this worked. Unfortunately I do not have pictures, but if someone else has the same issue you should be able to see what I'm referring to by comparing the power button to the volume buttons on the mainboard, there is a metal housing around the actual button that is soldered to the main board, it has a slit down the back side of it that allows it to spread apart. The volume keys should be tight.
THE PROBLEM: Power/Lock button stops working
THE CAUSE(assumed): Nexus 5 power/lock button rattle fix
THE FIX: Using needle nose pliers to crimp the metal backing of the power button housing good and tight.
I hope this helps others out in the future as I'm sure I wont be the only one with this problem.

Just an FYI this worked for me for a short while, then I my power button stopped working again, I tried applying pressure with pliers again with no luck. Ended doing an RMA on my phone. Had a new one sent to me and they didn't say anything about my phone being opened up. I had even replaced the whole front half of the phone including screen, cameras, battery etc.
I made the mistake of not turning it off immediately and tried pressing buttons.
The volume buttons and power buttons went crazy for a bit then the LED flash flicked on and off a while then eventually all the harware buttons failed.
What replacement parts do you guys suggest I try getting? Could the problem be isolated to the power/volume switch piece?
Did you leave it to dry for a week, if it's bought second hand I guess buying a device with a broken display but yet functioning and replace the circuit board..don't know if sammy still do repairs but I guess how much your willing to pay..

that's a brilliant idea! no I didnt leave it out to dry for a week before I pressed buttons on my wet device (the absolute most essential part of saving a water damaged device, don't do it people!)

After completely shattering my original screen, I got a replacement from Etrade Supply and it's not working correctly at all. Only half of the screen works and it constantly registers touches all over. The one thing that has me worried that it's not the screen is if I hold the power button to shut the phone down, it starts right back up (as if there's a phantom power btn press)
Any ideas?

Send it back for repair or better yet exchange, serious hardware issues mate. Maybe you got a poorly refurbished phone.
I did get a refurbished device and it worked fine until I replaced the glass+digitizer after cracking the glass. I'm not sure they'd take it back a second time since I've opened the case and worked on it.

That's my hope. The power button thing has me worried that a different component is to blame. I wish I could isolate the problem.
