Launcher Question - AT&T LG G3

I've researched the forums, both AT&T one here and the international forums but can't find anyone else saying anything about this, also this is my first LG phone besides having the G-Flex for about a day and a half so I don't know if this is normal, but the redraw on this phone is almost unbearable. I'm loving pretty much everything about my G3, I love how customizable it is and the battery life is great so far, but the UI lags horribly, the most noticeable place is going back to the home screen. Almost every single time every widget has to reload and causes like 5-10 seconds of lag. I am rooted with carrier iq disabled and running xposed with only G3 tweaksbox. Is there any way around this or any way to fix it without switching to a 3rd party launcher and losing all my stock widgets?

I don't use the stock launcher and I don't have this issue. And when I was using the stock launcher I don't recall this being an issue either.
It seems like a majority of the phones issues can be solved by a factory reset, perhaps try that

Yeah I just tried that, but no luck, it doesn't seem anyone else is having very much trouble with lag and things like that, I think I'm going to try to do the flash back to stock guide in the development section and see if that does the trick. Thanks for the advice though!

Perhaps it's one thing I particular, try disabling widgets one at a time? I dunno

I used the stock launcher for as long as it took nova to download so I don't know about redraws. It does suck losing some widgets with a 3rd party launcher but it's all worth it.

I used to use nova, but I'm head over heels with GNL, it's simple and perfect

I keep seeing people complain about system lag and I have yet to experience any lag at all. I'm rooted and xposed and greenified almost every app I have that I use often and my phone is stupid fast.

I agree.
Another thing you can try, if you can live without xposed, is enable ART, that should speed things up as well

If u are experiencing a lot of redraws then I would advise using an app or tweak to lock the launcher process in memory.

Have you removed any of the bloat apps? Those really slow things down. That's not normal at all I just tested mine and it's on part with nova when you change it to stock speed.

No lag here.

I've had this phone since 7/18 and have had zero lag issues. I'm rooted and running ART and my phone is super fast. The stock launcher is fast but I prefer Nova.

[Q] Launcher and home screen smoothness

Ok, maybe this has been discussed, and maybe this is posted in the wrong forum (I was considering apps/themes). If so, I apologize, and please move my thread.
But during my years with android, there is one thing that has annoyed me, and it still does. The animation when flipping through homescreens is really cool, but it is not nearly as smooth as it should be (compare it to the iPhone). With my magic it looked awful, with my galaxy s it was almost comparable to an iphone app drawer, but still not what I would call silky smooth. With the nexus s, it seems I've taken a step back again. I've tried stock launcher, zeam, LP and ADW. I have not tried ADW EX yet because of some credit card issues. Is there something to be done about this? I mean, the phone should be more than capable hardware wise, and everything else is blazing fast (opening various apps, settings, the widget scrolling is smooth, games run perfectly and so on).
I've currently only tried out stock 2.3.1 and CM7 alpha 2 and alpha 2-2 (jan. 6th).
Anyone with any insight in whats causing it? Is there something I can do other than disable live wallpaper and wallpaper scrolling? Disabling those two is a small let down, because I really like the features. Or am I simply imagining it?
Sorry I have no insightful input, but I would like to say, no, you're not imagining it. This has been my experience with Android overall as well.
I am no fan of Apple's tight grips and dated OS, however, I know where credit is due and they deserve respect for what they do get right: namely, the screen and the touch interface. Something about it is just 'perfect' -- almost magical. It truly responds to every command you have, and this spills over not just with scrolling or hitting icons, but with typing, as well. Their keyboard (which I'm sure succeeds thanks to a combination of hardware and software) is second to none. I've been an avid critic of Android's keyboard experience in other threads. Anyone who has typed extensively on both platforms will know the difference. I can type (and use the screen) on an iPhone, even an iPod Touch, with confidence that it'll get what I mean to press. The same cannot be said for Android.
At the end of the day, it's a trade-off. I stick with Android for its customizations, open-ended potential, market, and because I am a user of everything Google -- it just makes sense to stick with Android. I also don't appreciate Apple's philosophy, which essentially comes down to: "the average user is an idiot," which isn't entirely untrue and, needless to say, is a philosophy that works wonders for them. It just isn't for me. However, I am and continue to be critical of Android. I do so out of the desire to see it improve. They close the gap with every iteration, but it would be dishonest to say that they've matched areas in which Apple excels in; one of them being responsive touchscreen and scrolling. You're not imagining it.

I've definitely noticed what you have.
Both ADW (I believe) and Launcher Pro have settings that can make it slightly smoother.
I use Launcher Pro on Bionix ROM 1.1 with stock kernel. In launcher pro, I have disabled "Advanced Settings"->"High Quality Scrolling" and it seems to be less laggy with screen scrolling.
The setting in ADW is "System Preferences"->"Scrolling Cache"->Low Quality.
The binoix rom definitely helps too.
Ye, just installed bionix and it's a bit better than cm actually. All the other tweaks, I've already configured. Still not like I would want it to be though. I'm wondering if it's that hard to actually make a smooth launcher. The guys making these launchers are doing an awesome job in all other aspects, so my guess is google isn't making it all that easy for them. The whole thing strikes me as weird, but hey, I haven't got even a small insight in developing for android.
@onthecouchagain I totally share your views on android. But I would never switch to an iPhone, it was just a comparison, because Apple really have that part nailed down.
EDIT: With bionix and OC on demand, I actually think the stock browser is smoother than ADW.
EDIT2: I've been thinking things through a bit, and the comparison with the iphone isn't entirely fair. The flexibility of the home screens by far superseede the iphone. I mean, basically the iphone only has an app drawer, and the app drawer is supersmooth on the NS. The home screens incorporate widgets that can be scrolled and update and all that, so I guess that takes up a lot more resources than an app drawer alone will. But still, the lag takes away from the user experience, and they really should try to improve it.
OP did you not find launcher pro extremely smoother over stock launcher? pretty sure LP is hitting up near 55 FPS for homescreen scrolls, stock launcher is much more choppy. in fact LP (and ADW somewhat, i find LP smoother) is buttery smooth scrolling i find. i believe LP uses more hardware graphics where stock launcher does not, that's why its smoother than stock.
however perhaps the nexus s is not yet configured with LP for its graphics? cause i know on all the other phones like nexus one and droid x, LP is insanely smoother over stock.
around 50-55 fps.

Yes, I'm aware of that, and was using LP on my galaxy s. However, on the NS it doesn't seem smooth at all. And for some reason it freezes up real bad from time to time as well, and requires a restart. This was on CM7 alpha, so it may be related to that.
Have you tried LP on the NS or other phones?
EDIT: Tried out LP on bionix now, and it's by far the best so far. Still not perfect, but very close. I think I've read that the LP still isn't optimized for GB, if thats true, it should be really good once it is. Now I just have to get my damn pay pal account working, so I can pay for LP.
On thing about LP though. The scrolling seems very smooth once the animation has started, but it always hangs a bit after you have started moving your thumb, if you get what I'm saying. It's like it takes some time before the launcher registers that you're swyping your thumb, and then starts the animation. I haven't found a setting for this. Anyone? I know I'm being very picky here, It's kind of an obsession for me

I got ya. What I'm thinking is that just like the nexus s is not optimized its video graphics in the browser for hummingbird, launcher pro also is hit by this bug and will need to wait for the driver fix from Google and Samsung. Currently its optimized for snapdragon so I'm thinking that's the problem.
For me on nexus s it works really smooth as long as I disable wallpaper scrolling... You can also check in advanced settings, clear cache on exit and play with other configs there, but disabling the wallpaper scrolling improves a lot...
Btw, on the Jobs phone, there is no wallpaper scrolling, widgets, and any other cool stuff we have in android, which also requires some work from CPU, something to think about...

Yeah, that's what I was pointing out in my last edit. But I still think it takes away from the overall user experience, and the avg user doesn't even think about what takes up CPU power, they just want fluidity and everything to work out of the box without having to be tweaked. And even though all the tweaking and options is what makes android so great, that shouldn't compromise user experience.

Hello people !
I'm also a bit disappointed by the overall user experience provided by the Nexus S.
That laggy behavior is very disappointing.
My girlfriend's iPhone 3G is even smoother at switching from one homescreen to another.
I've been owning Android handsets for the past year and the half and I thought I would get rid of that laggy behavior with the Nexus S and Gingerbread.
Well, too bad for me... same ****, different day
Allright, so just a small update. In my neverending quest for smooth home screen scrolling I discovered a new launcher galled Go Launcher. And wouldnt you know, it's a lot better than anything else I've ever tried when it comes to home screen. Can't get much smoother than this. Not a big fan of the app drawer on that launcher though, but the launcher is a clear first choice for now.

Yeah except other android phones like my nexus one are smooth as butter with launcher pro. So it must be some issue with nexus s drivers.
We know there is a graphics problem with the nexus s browser, so its not a far stretch to have similar issues with other areas not being smooth.

Here is a fun test : remove everything you have on your homescreens and just leave one app icon. Switch between homescreens, and you'll notice that even with nothing on the desktop, performance is still crappy.
I guess that widgets have nothing to do with those lags.

Yes, there is an occasionally happening swipe lag in the home launcher, browser and other application. It is like it missed a swipe. It is very annoying and I even had it with the ADW launcher EX. Reminds me of the bug on the Nexus One. There I had the same problem that often the first swipe on the home launcher wouldn't do anything. I can't believe that this missed swipe or lag however you wanna call it slipped through the testing. I am a bit disappointed because I haven't had any problems with the Sense UI on my MT4G and missed swipe or laggy swiping.
mine was laggy aswell, but once i rooted, did a full WIPE/CLEAN/DATA wipe and a factory reset it didnt lag anymore???
now its silky smooth, and applying the 1.2Ghz kernel did make the iphone look like a snail

Problems with droid charge?

Anyone having performance issues with their charge? I had high expectations for this phone but im getting lag in just about everything. . IE this forum scrolling through threads is way laggy compared to fascinate. Im not sure if I have a bunk phone or if the hardware sucks or if its the ROM just sucks. Any hope for this phone?
No I'm noticing some laggy browsing as well. Coming from the Droid Incredible i figured this would be much quicker. At times I think 3g on it was faster than wifi on this. Im sure it'll speed up once the cache builds up for the sites i browse. I also notice my linpack and quadrant scores are pants on this. I would love root and a new kernel but that damn ota seems to be holding us back.
My guess is its the charge's browser. I read reviews where it has bad problems with sites with a lot of flash (such as the ads). just tried this site on both the stock browser and dolphin browser and dolphin browser works fine.
It was nearly unreadable on the stock browser. So try a browser from the market.

You're right, browsing on Dolphin seems much faster. It does still hang at the end but it isn't nearly as bad.
Also, while I know its a completely different phone from what I had, the keyboard and auto-correct drive me absolutely mental.
Auto correct can be turned off in menu->settings->keyboard
I just noticed that I have two burnt out pixels .. ack. bright red dots, mostly noticeable on boot screens.
I think it's the ROM. Everything seems sluggish / lags randomly on my charge. So far it really feels like touchwiz is to blame, but I imagine the filesystem is partially to blame.
It really sucks that my year old Incredible seems faster than a brand new "flagship" phone.
I removed alot of bloatware installed launcher pro and Opera mini, then I also removed Touch wiz and the phone is alot faster. Installing launcher pro and then removing/renaming the touch wiz apk made a big difference performance wise. I have no lag when using the interface now. And yes the stock browser is crap, I thought it was the phone as well, but after installing Opera I notice a big difference.
what exactly does the TouchWiz app do? What do you lose by freezing it?

TouchWiz is Samsung's launcher. Do NOT freeze or remove it before downloading an alternative (such as LauncherPro) and rebooting to activate it. Otherwise ODIN will be in your immediate future.

I believe the keys not lighting up was also the default behavior for the Fascinate, and that was resolved with a custom kernel. This may be inaccurate, as I came from the Droid X, but luckily the key layout is identical so I didn't need any time to relearn.

Is this cause for concern?

So I have had my Sensation for a week now and while it's been running almost flawless I have noticed something odd. On two occasions I have been several screens deep in an application. The most recent was while I was in the Google Market. After hitting the back (arrow) button several times, I noticed that the screen went white and HTC letters appeared. It's almost like it reset itself without the full reboot.
Has anyone else experienced this issue. Is it cause for concern? I have a week left to exchange it at Walmart, but would prefer not to go that route unless I have to do so.
Thanks for any and all replies.
It sounds like Rosie (Sense launcher) gets pushed out of the memory and has to re-start itself. Got this phone today and I've seen it more then once already. I think it's ridiculous that a phone with 700+ Mb or Ram is exhibiting that kind of behavior. Just shows how bloated Sense is.
Don't get me wrong, I like Sense, I just wish it would not take over the phone and would let us disable/uninstall/replace parts of it. Can't wait for CM on this device.
I just picked up my sensation and its done that several times already seems like its doing a soft reboot.

I've had this same issue occasionally as well. Can't recreate it, but it definitely happens.
Thanks for the info. On the one hand it's reassuring that it's happening to others, however, it doesn't mean that it's acceptable. One more reason to hope HTC unlocks the boot loader soon.
The 3D launcher is nice but I'm probably going to replace it with some thing like Go EX or ADW EX. If the launcher is that much of a ram hog it's not worth the eye candy.
I have had two units and they both have don it

Yep, that's exactly what it is. It's not a reboot, or a reset, or anything like that.
I got it quite a lot in the day or so that I used Sense, haven't seen it happen with ADW.Launcher.EX yet. ADW restarts occasionally on my HTC Desire (running CM7.1 nightlies) if I've been doing something memory intensive like playing a 3D game or browsing the internet with lots of windows.
CM7 is going to be brilliant on here. It'll be Sensational

I've seen it a total of two times the past week. I've been using Sense launcher the whole time and using the phone itself WAAAAAAAAAAY too much this past week. So for me it's been a very rare glitch.
Sense out of the box is always under-optimized.
Give me root! Or give me death!
The same thing happens on my wifes Thunderbolt so I'd say it may be a Sense optimization issue.

Slow swiping on unlock?

Every single time I swipe to other home screens after unlocking my phone after around 5+ minutes of screen off time, it lags. Obvious judder the first time I swipe to them My friend has the LG Optimus G which ALSO came out a couple months ago, and her home screens are buttery smooth every time, even after unlock, and she has ICS -_-

I am frustrated with some lag on this phone too.. but we can't do much about it. Only solution is that you can installed other launcher (Nova, Apex). ( Circles Widget won't work on 3rd party launchers). Anyone can confirm if this lag is fixed in Jelly bean update?
It is not fixed, but is a little better. I tried nova, loved it but don't use it since it is missing the new jb animations.
I'm not sure why motor doesn't fix the issue, otherwise the phone is great. Getting rid of the circles widget helps.

Yep. Maybe I'll try it again shortly, the jb animations in the app tray are a big improvement, I'll try it tonite.

I have Nova and JB.....

Is everyone else having issues with lag?

I went from the HTC One to this, and I am a little disappointed here. The HTC One was beautiful, great, etc, but I went with this phone for a a more future proof reason. The thing I am confused about is how is this phone lagging? The One did not lag, and I am not by any means trying to start up a debate between the two, but why does this phone lag? Anybody experiencing odd lag? (opening closing apps have a hiccup, widgets, scrolling)
The screen seems to have a good amount of ghosting, but I assume that is because this is a PenTile super saturated screen, so it won't be as smooth movement as an LCD screen. (I freakin' love this screen, by the way)
Also, Samsung, I know if I raise the volume it could possible damage my ears, quit popping a message up every time I do this.
Also...
For the stock browser and Chrome, the screen slightly dims itself upon opening, doesn't do it with Firefox though.
Small things, small gripes. These small grips bothering anyone else?
It seems odd, this is my first Samsung device, but it seems like it's not a consistent experience. It just launched, I know, but I did not think one of the big brands would have these issues.

Yup, bloatware. My Galaxy S3 running CM 10.1 was FAST. Patiently waiting.
well htc one is in android 2.1 now it may have the same problem when you upgrade to 4.2 I guess .
To solve the lag, you may turn on Force Gpu option in developer setting, but it causes battery.

That did nothing, but I changed the animations to 0.5x and they go so quick, I don't notice it anymore. I sincerely hope that Samsung/AT&T push out something to fix this, I don't feel like a phone with an overclocked Snapdragon 600 should be going through this.
Set animations to zero and the phone will be even quicker. You won't miss a thing. Good luck.
The lag is very bad. It really makes me wanna throw this device against the wall. Coming from an S3 and Note 2 this feels like a huge downgrade, seriously.
I do know though that now that the boot loader has been unlocked, developers can start making custom roms. That and I know there will be many updates. The lag will not last forever.

That doesn't do anything. The browser, messaging app, and gallery all lag within. Samsung needs to properly optimize their software for the Snapdragon 600.
If your using Nova launcher, go to Nova Settings - Look and Feel - App Animations. Change it to ICS or slide. This has removed any stutter for me with the opening and closing app transitions.

You guys aren't addressing his main problem. He's upset about lag within the apps themselves.
To Op, just be patient and either Samsung or devs here will address it. It's clearly software related.
Also, the screen darkening happens if you have certain battery saving things turned on. Is your energy saver on?

I think he's concerned about a few things. Stuttering as I mentioned before. He mentions opening and closing apps have a hiccup. See below.

I've completely disabled any energy saving, even auto adjust screen tone. This happens only with Chrome and stock browsers. It's a light dimming from brightness being full, seemed odd.

Yes, you're right. They have an odd stutter. The sad thing is, we shouldn't have to do anything to stop this from happening. lol
Also, the stutters happen even when opening/closing/navigating the settings, and I saw it stutter a few times closing the app drawer, that one surprised me.
How do you guys feel about the ghosting/tracers on text or objects when moving quickly?
Oh wow, Force GPU actually did it for me. Thanks! Lol

A couple of quick suggestions:
-Hard Reset when you get the phone. A few people have commented that after a re-flash the phone runs smoother
-disable animations and the screen unlock ripples/light BS. The ripple caused issues with the GS3, so this is just an assumption on my part.
-Force GPU helps
-Freeze and apps especially bloat you don't use.
-Since this seems to be a common issue for everyone, I would hope that Samsung/Att will have a small update in the coming months. I will not hold my breathe though.

This actually does help a lot to reduce the lag.. Did this a few days ago and it has def helped!
I felt the same way about my S3 for a long time until I finally flashed tasks AOKP with ktoonz kernel.
For reference, I think the size of the stock rom on the s4 is somewhere around two gigs as opposed to tasks AOKP which was around 500 or 600 MB's.
I haven't even activated my S4 yet because of the frustration I know I would endure when switching between apps, or texting, or pretty much doing anything.
My S3 is RIDICULOUSLY fast now so I have the utmost confidence that once the Verizon phone is out and the ROMs start rolling in, all the lag will be gone once you get away from TouchWiz.
[edit] Task I see you lurking around the S4 boards. I don't know what it all means, but I LIKE it!!!

This poster on a Rogers S4 claims he received a factory update that help the performance of his phone...

Maybe AT&T will push a similar update to help with performance issues.
