worth rooting for better battery? - AT&T LG G3

I'm passed my 14 day return deadline so I guess I'm keeping this thing. I like it, buts a challenge with the battery.
Wondering if there are any means to conserve battery If I root, and if so how much would it really help?

Root and remove carrier IQ is a start

Agreed. This will improve idle time significantly.

Freeze all bloat, remove carrier IQ, greenify system apps that are doing excessive wake locks.
Sent from my LG-D850 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I removed all carrier.iq and also removed all the bloat from the phone and i get kick a$$ battery life now. So much better then out ofnthe box, i would recommend it 100%

All the things above are good and if you're still not happy, an app called lean data can really boost the battery.
All in all, coming from s3 I'm very pleased with the battery life on this thing

With root being easily achieved thanks to towelroot, there's not much of a reason to ever not root (apart from OTA's).
I enjoy brightness and constant music, so my phone is awake a lot and when the screen is on, it takes up a lot of battery life. So greenifying apps and removing bloat was a must to get the best battery life.

[Q] GB installed on my G2X, so when does the cool stuff happen?

Ok so GB is up and running since yesterday at about 5:30pm.
The phone seems snappier and quicker and has a different look to it, but the one thing I was hoping for was better battery life and it seems the same if worse.
I have had any reboots yet, but I'm not willing to say that the issue has been fixed because I don't get them everyday.
If this isn't the official TMO/LG fix, do you guys think there is still a chance they will address battery life because they didn't do anything IMO.
I have to agree. My battery life is no better then it was from FroYo. This better not be the official release.
My battery life is way better on this stock GB than on the stock FROYO. Maybe you have an application that is persistently hogging resources?
I think you may be right. I just noticed that TeleNav was stuck in a continuous restart. I never even opened that POS software. Cannot wait to root with SuperOneClick.
Yeah android as a whole OS needs to release a major update concerning battery life, its easier said than done though the hardware is different on every phone.

Just another quick piece of advice. If you are coming from a different ROM and/or different kernel let the battery charge to 100 then unplug from charger > Boot into CWM > advanced > Wipe Battery Stats
Exactly, which is why the manufacturers really need to fix battery life for each of the phones they put out.
I really want to wait for ice cream sandwich, but if I get the chance to get an iphone4 I'm going for it, even though it might be considered a downgrade specs wise, the apps, and better battery life make up for all the losses.

Why wouldn't you wait for the five to come out?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Well I don't really have cash to spend on a iphone5, if I can do an even trade for the 4 I will.

I decided to use the rooted version that came about yesterday afternoon and let it fully charge overnight and I've had it off my charger for 2hrs. My battery got worse, I'm now at 85% and all I've done was watch 2 short videos and came here a few times for a few mins. Also downloaded the newest cm7 nightly.
Overall I'm not impressed with the work LG put into this, seems like this was the CEOs teenage stepsons work so he could have his devs work on their other pos electronics.

A friendly word of advice. I came from the iPhone4 to the G2x. Even with the shortcomings this phone has had the iPhone 4 will only make you want your G2x back. Getting caught up in Apple's iron fist of control over your device sucks. I have had every iPhone since the original release. The battery life is decent on the iPhone 4, but not any better in my opinion than what I am getting now since I flashed a different ROM. So from experience I can say that is not a good thing.
I am running CM7 with faux's kernel on my G2x. since doing that I have had great battery life, no re-boots and no other issues. If you haven't done that it's worth a try.
Yeah, now with ios 5 u are no.longer tied down to iTunes, I have tried just about all the roms and kernel combinations, the best I got was 15 hours with heavy optimization that was running cm7 with faux oc UV kernel with set CPU profiles and juice defender, basically I disabled every feature that made my phone a smartphone, if I recall when I had an iPhone 3g (and the 4's battery has to.be better) I never needed to carry around my charger and I could actually play games, I just dropped from 100% to 90% in 27min, cmon, this is running the phone how it was made to run with gb rom from yesterday and bloat removed w root at 20% brightness.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Whenever I want serious battery life, I just turn on wifi calling. Since it disables the cellular radio completely I get way, way, way more battery time out of it. Just the other day I had the phone off the charger for 18 hours and was at 40% battery life. This on on the stock rom.
I manage cell phones and can confidently say that even the iphone users are unhappy with their battery life, as is nearly every smartphone user coming from a dumbphone or a blackberry.
Oh and I forgot to add, with ios5 you still are forced to use itunes for all of your music and syncing, you just don't have to physically hook up the cables. It's like a wireless tether sync.

Apple has absolute control over everything software and hardware, allowing for ultimate optimization. Add that to the massive battery and lack of true multitasking and you have a phone that will last a long time.
What you describe should not be happening though, and I suggest trying juice defender and reading on battery saving tips for android. But understand that phones are getting more powerful, while battery tech stays the same.

I don't think I do. I have had this crappy battery life since release day. I tried the factory reset stuff and ran with no apps. Once I noticed it didn't improve battery life I put the apps back on.
To me it is just the cell stand by/phone idle stuff always killing my battery.
I would love to use the wifi calling, but it didn't work very well at my house (no option to do so at work).
For people with battery life changes....Did you just upgrade to GB via the ROM available, or did you use the LG Tool that also updated basebands?
My phone is great on Froyo with the exception of battery life. I had read GB has better battery life. Trying to determine if changing the basebands will also help.
Any advice?
If you think you have bad battery life, my friend has an HTC Thunderbolt he tells me he only gets 4 hours of battery life... Takes him 6 hours to charge to full, 10 AM disconnects from his charger and at 2PM he has less than 10% left.
I get less than four hours if I don't turn off the screen, and constantly use my phone with brightness at 25%.

What roms have good battery life?

I'm currently running Valhalla final rom and it drains my battery very fast with even minimal use.. I aslways have GPS and wifi off. Always quit all my apps and free the ram when I'm done... any good roms out there with good battery life?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA
I get 2-3 DAYS with valhalla final, so I'm not sure that swapping roms will change your battery life much. You can try one-click gremlin remover before you flash your next rom of choice though.
also, do you have any apps/services that run in the background, like facebook?

Alex - there are several recent threads tegarding battery life in the Q&A section. Browse them and see if you can learn a few things how to improve battery life and what the big battery drainers are.
All the ROM's, for the most part, have the potential for great battery life if you use them correctly. WiFi, Sync and GPS need to only be on when you need them. Many apps sync on their own - adjust the sync intervals on them. Use Gemini App Manager or AutoStarts to disable autorun scripts in the apps. Adjust screen brightness. Any data hungry apps (i.e. music streaming, Netflix, etc) will drain your battery regardless what you do. Undervolt with Tegrak Premium. Minimal widgets on home screens.
It is not the ROMs - it is how the end-user uses the ROM and their phone.
Turn off data and background data, until you need it. I get over 2 days sometimes depending on usage

Im running NO widgets, no facebook sync.. the only account that syncs on my phone is gmail... nothing extra downloaded really just mostly valhalla final rom with a few apps.... Im noticing a big difference in battery life from stock gingerbread... I know for a fact that my battery is good because i was always able to use it fully for one day.. i dont charge my phone often to keep battery health in best condition I charge only when its super low.. and once in a while I let it die completely then recharge it fully
I even see a better life on icbinb rom than valhalla.. just wanted to see if anyone else notices the difference guys
You saw Mike says he gets a couple days on Valhalla. Try the Gremlin Remover. Do everything the thread says. It is effective.

Stop doing this. Li-ion batteries are a different breed.
I suggest taking a read over this page.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
In brief stop treating your li-ion battery like its a ni-cad otherwise you will never have good battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23108980&postcount=33
Last run was for 5 and half days with about 3:30 of display time (internet and such), 1:30 of music streaming and like 20 min of voice calling on stock rooted and debloated KJ6.
Yup, I know, for 5 days that's not much of a usage but point is that SGS4G does not use too much juice when idle.

I keep GPS and Wi-fi on all the time, use the phone pretty hard during the day, and still have 60-70% battery left each evening.
You say that you "quit all my apps and free the ram", so I assume that you are using an app killer. My experience is that they are actually detrimental since they aren't needed and many apps just restart in the background, sucking more battery.
Omg people...your using an android....you want everything at your finger tips and wonder why it eats battery
Try all this while on your laptop without plugging it in.....just get an external charger, and a few extra batteries....all in which are very cheap now.......and then we dont have to listen to all this over and over any more.

[Discussion] Battery Killers

We all want good battery life, that is a given. With the large batteries and the optimized operating systems versions most of us are running today, we all should have it. But often times we don't, why not? Apps with services causing wake lock issues are often to blame. So, I wanted to start this thread to post all apps we have found to either avoid or with workarounds to prevent bad battery life from ensuing.

Make sure no apps are running in the background, if you're not gonna be using your phone for a few hours turn your brightness to the lowest possible, make sure your screen shuts off in less settings ect.

I agree, facebook its battery sucker...
Wifi, Scrreen brightness, Auto sync, GPS and games in general seem to be the big culkprits for my battery draining. Even simple things like turning auto rotate off can help a tiny bit for performance and battery life. Limiting your amount of active widgets and screens animations on your fancy launcher can cut down as well on battery and performance. Certain IM apps like facebook chat, skype, and a ton of others will kill your device fast. Google + is known to be a bandwidth hog and batttery killer. I noticed when im browsiing youtube simple things like turning off hd will dramatically help improve battery life because your network is not sucking as much bandwidth.
There is all kinds of stuff to do . It is a constant battle.
Greenify app & use Lean Kernel if possible
Like many have said, apps running in the background are the main culprits of a shirt battery life. Unless you feel those apps are truly essential I recommend uninstalling those apps.

Using greenify like most of you guys. Yesterday I installed lux lite on a new custom ROM and noticed it was responsible for about 25% of my battery usage over about an hour with the screen on. Anyone with experience with this app know if this is normal behavior?

USB Chargers
I don't know if anyone realizes this, but what I have experienced with my phones(from Nexus One - Nexus 4) I have noticed when I charge my phone through a computer the battery seems to go out faster. When I connect it directly to power it lasts much longer.
Has anyone else noticed this"?

Need some help with battery drain please.

Hello,
I have owned a note 2 and 3 and quite a few Android phones before that. I know how to disable features running in the background to get good battery life out of them. My notes had amazing battery life.
I have applied the same settings to my note sm n915fy and the battery is pretty poor. As soon as I take it off charge it immediately drops to 99% then down to about 70 in 5 hours while I'm asleep. I have brightness to 25% with sync disabled, a jet black background and all Samsung features switched off. Saying that I still seem to get a lot if push notifications in the Background.
I bought this phone from someone and never doe a reset when I got it, I just made a google account up.
I have not rooted yet, I am waiting for more roms to appear before I consider this.
I would appreciate so etc help on this please.
Cheers.
I found 2 issues that were killing my battery: s-health and the unified daemon. I think UD is used to track location for the weather display on the edge screen. Anyway, disabling both of them gave me good battery life. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply.
I done a factory restore which seems to have helped a bit. I will try disabling UD to see if it helps more.
Cheers.
how is the battery life now?
are you on kitkat or jellybean?
my battery life became awful since the kitkat upgrade. what I did was to downgrade back to jellybean. now battery life is a little better. because it doesn't drain a lot when idle. but it's unstable and the percentage is not steady. sometimes it drains fast and sometimes not. crazy phone. I never regretted buying it before this power game

Battery life for rooted users

I was wondering how good rooted users could make the battery life with apps like Greenify etc.
Are there any users here that use rooted apps to extend battery life? If so how is it?
I am not rooted.
It seems to me I have better battery life since I got rid of greenify, lux and tasker. I never meant to just remove them, it's just I was getting random reboots so factory reset and have only installed a small bunch of apps since.
Didn't expect better battery life especially without lux which can dim the screen brightness much more then stock. On greenify, my take is, without root it cannot really hibernate the apps, I think it stops them altogether, so it takes more for them to start again, hence more battery drain.
