Need some help with battery drain please. - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have owned a note 2 and 3 and quite a few Android phones before that. I know how to disable features running in the background to get good battery life out of them. My notes had amazing battery life.
I have applied the same settings to my note sm n915fy and the battery is pretty poor. As soon as I take it off charge it immediately drops to 99% then down to about 70 in 5 hours while I'm asleep. I have brightness to 25% with sync disabled, a jet black background and all Samsung features switched off. Saying that I still seem to get a lot if push notifications in the Background.
I bought this phone from someone and never doe a reset when I got it, I just made a google account up.
I have not rooted yet, I am waiting for more roms to appear before I consider this.
I would appreciate so etc help on this please.
Cheers.

I found 2 issues that were killing my battery: s-health and the unified daemon. I think UD is used to track location for the weather display on the edge screen. Anyway, disabling both of them gave me good battery life. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
I done a factory restore which seems to have helped a bit. I will try disabling UD to see if it helps more.
Cheers.

how is the battery life now?
are you on kitkat or jellybean?
my battery life became awful since the kitkat upgrade. what I did was to downgrade back to jellybean. now battery life is a little better. because it doesn't drain a lot when idle. but it's unstable and the percentage is not steady. sometimes it drains fast and sometimes not. crazy phone. I never regretted buying it before this power game

What????
You must be in the wrong device section. You have the Note 3 seeing from your XDA signature.
Our Note Edge came default with KitKat 4.4.4

you are right. I just noticed that.

I can say without any hesitation both the note 4 and note 4 edge the battery sucks compared to the note 3, I am not usually a fan of apps that are supposed to help, But try Shutapp it really does help a lot.

[VERIZON] Absolutely Horrible Battery Life

My only concern when buying this phone was battery life compared to my Razr Maxx. I was expecting it to be shorter...... but not this much!
I have tried restarting and clearing cache+dalvik. It seems to keep happening.
Eesh that is definitely not normal. I have the Verizon GS3 and get far better battery life.
I would suggest a factory reset. That seems to work for some people. Otherwise I'd suggest getting a replacement.

looks like something is waking up your phone like crazy when the screen is off...
I love these sort of posts. You obviously have a wake lock that is keeping your processor active when not in use. Download "BetterBatteryStats" from the market and check out your wake locks and partial wake locks. It will be petty obvious at that point. It's most likely a rouge app.
It isn't a systemic problem with the phone. I get around 20 hours with slightly more than moderate use.

can you elaborate more on this? i downloaded the program and I dont see anything irregular at all. when i go to "partial wake locks" i see audioout only taking up 2.4% TOTAL TIM, 7M51S and the next one being dropboxcpuolywakelock
next one being backup, so on and so forth, none above 2%....
I am experiencing the exact same battery life drain as the op...except i have the tmobile version

I had the same issue the other night. Took it off the charger and fell asleep.... when I woke up over 1/4 of my battery was gone. Android System showed the same high percentage used. I went into apps, android system, force stopped it, rebooted.. Hasn't crept back up since.
From my understanding, under idle, android system should be in the 5-10% range.
I did a full system reboot, pulled battery and restarted - all better. Something was tripping my battery up as well. It's not the phone, somethings causing it.

not sure how thats possible at all.. I have the t999 gs3 and other verizon users confirmed very similar battery life..... these phones get around 2.5 hours screen on time.... soo to actually get 20 hours of use, MOST of that time has to be with the screen off.. i dont see how moderate usage would yield 20 hours.... ide LOVE to get 20 hoursss

I have Verizon GS3 and battery life is great. I too had an issue with battery drainning fast on my GS3 but found out it was Enhanced Mail Apps that I was using that killed my Battery so I uninstalled it. After the uninstall, my battery life has been great. You really can't compare battery life between Mot Raze and GS3. GS3 is far superior.
There must be an apps that is draining your battery.
Here is my battery stats. This is with moderate use.

100% LTE. Moderate with periods of heavy use. I would run a few cycles to see if your battery performance improves. Also, as other users have stated, keep running BetterBatteryStats for a few days and it will keep catching the wakelocks you're getting. If you still can't figure out the problem, I would seek a replacement battery from Verizon just to be sure.
Edit: Forgot to mention this before. If you haven't yet, plug your phone in and charge the battery to 100% with the phone powered down completely. Then let it run all the way down before charging it again. Doing this once effectively "trains" the battery to better read its full capacity and won't hurt the overall life of the battery. This is something that I find is often missed with new batteries, but I have had great results with.

Thanks for the replies... i did a factory reset and did not use Titanium to restore the apps in case one of them was causing the drain.
I'm still getting random drains by "gsiff_daemon" (which i'm seeing others having issues with this too). Fortunately this drain is fixed by a simple reboot. Yesterday I was able to get just under 15 hours of what i'd call light'ish use (under an hour of cached Spotify, WiFi all day, 10 minutes of phone calls, 30 SMS) and was at about 5%. Keep in mind I had about an hour in there where good 'ol gsiff was suckin down the battery (It took about 20% in 45 minutes).
The final test for me is this weekend. If it can last a whole day with my moderate/heavy usage.... i'm keeping it. Otherwise, its back to the Maxx.
This doesn't address the root cause of something preventing the phone from sleeping, but I thought I would mention an app that helps extend battery life. Personally I get great battery life regardless of any "saver" apps, and have never gotten less than 12 hours on a full charge, and that was very heavy use. I probably average closer to 20 on moderate-heavy use.
Anyway, as some know there are apps that will automatically turn off your data connection while the screen is off. Most turn the connection on for 1 minute, every 15 minutes while the screen is off so that you still receive email, ect... This does not affect phone calls and text messages, as they do not use apn and would be received immediately. These products can significantly extend battery life with little complication, particularly if you stay connected to LTE all the time. As an example, overnight I might lose about 20% of my battery or more while sleeping. With one of these apps I lose only about 4-6%.
I personally like the BatteryDefender app, very simple to use, and very reliable.

Why do Android battery life suck?

So far, I've owned 3 Android phone, and all of their battery sucked. I owned an Evo 4g, HTC Rezound, and I had 2 Galaxy S3's. Even with Extened battery, the battery won't last as long as an iPhone. And it doesn't stop here. It takes FOREVER to fully charge the battery only to find out that it gets depleted super fast. On the S3, I would be at 20% at the end of the school day, but with an iPhone, I end up around 60% with the same amount of use. The phones go up 1% after 5 minutes when plugged into a computer, and its annoying. I love Android with all my heart, but I can't deal with this problem. Anyone know of phone that has really good battery life (besides the MAXX)?
An iPhone's battery life is roughly the same in each iteration as a device from the Galaxy series. In fact it's been tested and the Galaxy S III lasted 6 hours and 55 minutes compared to the iPhone 5 which lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes. Both OS's implement battery management very well, and at the end of the day battery life is mainly dependent on user use. You can't expect an Android device to have numerous data hogging widgets as well as numerous background processes active, all while surfing the web with multiple windows open, and not drain just a little quicker than an iOS device that doesn't even utilize true multitasking. Please.
Also: It doesn't last as long as an iPhone "even with an extended battery?" GTFOH. Either your iPhone runs on nuclear material or you're full of sh**.
Why don't you use something like BetterBatteryStats and find out why the battery is being used ?
I get 3-4 hours of screen on time on my S3 with stock battery and kernel, but with some minimal battery-saving settings.
It used to be a lot worse - but I actually investigated and found out what was eating up the battery. I guess I could have just complained about it, but it was a lot faster to just work on finding a solution. I've been really impressed with how long my battery has been lasting lately - and it didn't take all that long to just read the BBS report and make changes.

In my words, its actually depend on your uses. Now a days we have 4"- 5" screen, where lots of processes are running in background. Using Dual Led Flash light for camera & having lots of Games, applications & files. We were used to have phone like NOKIA & BB. Where we just clicked over a button & thats all. But now when You click on screen, whole screen has to be work.
But yes, Few companies has taken it hard & Provided battery like MOTO MAXX.. also few have kernel bugs. So, it totally depend on you buddy, how you take it. Use data connectivity less & check whether your phone is going to Deep sleep / other name as per phone is going or not.
Be realistic with the brightness, keep it on auto don't run it at 100%. Try different ROMs with tweaks. Adjust settings with kernels for a faster battery recharge. Your options are infinte. Maybe android isn't for you.

There's an official Google statement that wiping batterie stats won't improve your battery life.
Wiping the stats forces android to recalibrate and calculate the battery stats.

Do you mean the time for one or both batteries ?
I get 3-4 on stock battery - but I always have my screen on the lowest brightness - and sometimes lower (using the Screen Filter app). I'm inside most of the time, so I don't need a very bright screen.
The only time I really lose battery like crazy is if I'm playing Ingress - because then I need to turn the brightness up and GPS is constantly updating so it's not exactly unexpected.

Lots of reviewers are talking about how the M8's battery lasted longer than the S5 too. Samsung needs to stop slacking on the software and give us a lightweight touchwiz. I absolutely love Sense 6 and I'm usually an AOSP guy. I'll probably try out GPE Roms once they're stable but honestly the new sense is everything I want out of android software. Minimal, clean, customizable, smooth and fast.

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting great battery life as well (though coming from a VZW GNex, anything would be an improvement). However...posting screenshots of how long your device has been off the charger with no other information (screen on time, app battery use) doesn't tell us anything.
Hell, I could leave my phone at home on wifi with the screen off and not touch it for the next 3 days, take a screenshot of any remaining battery life, and post it being like "OMG I got 3 days of battery life, this is amazing!" And it would be just about as informative and truthful as your screenshots (not including yours Evocm7, obviously).

I hear what you're saying. Personally, I'm not trying to participate in any scientific study on the matter. All I know, and all I care, is that I've had the phone off charge for 29 hours now... using it the way I normally use it during an average day ( pretty light)... and I'm still at 40% battery.
Coming from a malfunctioning POS Droid Charge this phone is a godsend. I used to have to carry an extra battery just to get through an 8 hour shift at work starting on a full charge.

lol I came from a GNex, so we're probably in the same boat. Even on wifi with extremely minimal use (10-15m screen time all day, which with how slow and laggy it was I didn't really care)), I would be down into the 60%'s by bedtime. If I went to the gym with full battery, after listening to Pandora while doing weights, and watching Netflix during cardio, it would be into 20-30% by the time I left, total of maybe 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
I flashed Skyfall the other day after charging my phone to full, and by the time I was done flashing, re-installing everything from TiBu, updating a few out-of date apps, and setting everything up, it was down to maybe 95%. And that was with the screen on for probably 20 minutes straight.

I think taking into consideration the snapdragon 801 chip how it saves battery, sense 6 being light weight, if one needs to you have the choices of battery save mode and if that's not enough extreme battery save mode! This phone came built up from the floor up. Now if we just had the 1.56 software version with all the above included stock and operating correctly, I'm sure we would see even more battery savings!

There are very few "de facto standards" for anything in the Android ecosystem...which is why we like it. I use a combination of GSAM Battery Monitor with the root companion, and Wakelock Detector.
Dont get me wrong, I get decent battery life, but nothing like you guys. For those of you with amazing OST are you guys using Google Now? I just installed wake lock detector to see what is causing my batt to drain more than others.

agree - but I found today phone started acting really sluggish and freezing.
Guess what it turns out to be the damn SD card - it's an old microSD from my epic4g. Took it out and voila - phone is lightning fast.
Moral of the story - sluggish phone? TRy removing the SD CARD
My battery live has decreased pretty dramatically since the kitkat updates. I tried to odin back to stock NB1 and retok the NC1 update but nothing changed. Also swapped batteries thinking maybe the battery had an issue but no change. I hope they release a new update soon that helps with this. Standy uses a little more than JB but when I am on LTE it drains really quickly!
I read somewhere that when you update, you gotta let the kernel settle in for a day or two (maybe more).
NC1 contained a new kernel.
Right now I'm running a custom ROM (but with another base), but the kernel is stock NC1.
Long story short: with power saving mode on and all connectivity off (wi-fi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS) off, for 8 hours the thing lost 1% battery.
But, alas, some one hour of browsing on wi-fi, and it fell down to 88%.
Don't ye worry, folks! Graphene batteries will hit the market in several years, and our phones will last a week on a single charge with heavy use, and the charging time itself will be 5 minutes!
(Or at least that's what the science news tells us. )

But I thought...
From everything I have read about Kitkat it was supposed to increase batter life take less RAM and CPU ect. Kinda like Windows 98 was . I have messed around with it on my PC in the X86 download. Its pretty sweet there but on a High-end 6-Core PC I'm not surprised. Has any one had a positive experience?
When a root method is discovered will it be worth it to upgrade or would you go back if you could.
One recommendation. I haven't used many Samsung Devices as this is my first. However I have use many other and I know when a new OTA comes out if your battery isn't fully charged at the time of update as well as plugged in. You might have caused the battery info to be incorrect. A battery calibration would do the trick. If your don't have root its not the easiest task.
You will have to recharge the phone with the power off. After a full charge power up. Use the phone till it powers down all by itself. Repeat the process 1 to 2 more times. Then your phone should have a calibrated battery.
I don't plan on upgrading at this time so if this helps please let people know.
I have used this on LG's Motorola's and several China Tabs. Some people don't want root but I help them as best I can with there issues.
Good Luck

That's fantastic battery life for this phone in general... let alone any of the baseband versions... I've found on NC1, that I am indeed getting better battery life, and it's a hell of alot snappier as well...
Mind you, I also tweak the snots out of it... for instance, I get rid of all samsung & AT&T bloatware, I get rid of TouchWiz (due to it being such a memory hog.... thus a big battery drainer)
I then go an install Greenify, and Tasker to set a task to hibernate almost everything including most system apps whenever my screen timesout (or I lock it)
I haven't had a chance to really test out how good the battery life is now, due to themeing, getting up to a NC1 Rom, and getting it setup, etc... but once I get a chance I'll post some results

agree - but I found today phone started acting really sluggish and freezing.
Guess what it turns out to be the damn SD card - it's an old microSD from my epic4g. Took it out and voila - phone is lightning fast.
Moral of the story - sluggish phone? TRy removing the SD CARD

You will have to recharge the phone with the power off. After a full charge power up. Use the phone till it powers down all by itself. Repeat the process 1 to 2 more times. Then your phone should have a calibrated battery.

This really isn't a good idea with these batteries, as you can dramatically decrease the battery life overall. They weren't meant for things like this. Instead a better idea would be to root, and find a re-calibrater in the play store... just my opinion.

Better battery life with 4.4.3?

Hello everyone, I have installed yesterday the 4.4.3 version on my phone and I found out that it has better battery life. I'm using greenify which I was also used back on the 4.4.2 but still i believe the battery is still better. Does anyone else found out that there is a slight improvement on the battery life?
one full day use cant tell you how battery life is. battery life can change every cycle, its all about your use for that day and the quality of signal. after 4 days to a week you will have an idea about battery life.

I know but based what i have done today (and i'm doing every day) it should be half of the battery and not 70%.
about the same as 4.4.2.... CM11 is still better choice if you are concern about battery life, probably due to the complete Google Play Services package.

I love the stock rom and i don't have any problem there are plenty solutions about the battery life. but anyone found out that there is slightly better battery life let me know.
I have noticed the same thing, was using franco kernel before and decided to try the 4.4.3 stock kernel for a while, battery life is definitely better than 4.4.2 stock kernel!

I'm on stock 4.4.3 with Franco R53 and I am definitely getting better battery life. Probably mainly due to Franco though!
I mentioned this in the 4.4.3 thread. It is quite possible that the update brought better battery life. However, people in this thread (and OP) should specify if they wiped their phone and flashed factory img. If that's the case the clean install might be the result of the battery, and not the update itself.

i disagree. cm has nothing good for battery. battery life is determined by your personal use, your personal setup, your apps installed, and the quality of the data/phone signal. kernels and roms do very little for battery.
MUCH better battery life here.. (4g) , before with 4.4.2 i had around 1-2 bars 4g reception (which is bad). the signal killed the battery i think, but now with the new modem i have 3-4 bars 4g reception. the battery life has been improved from 8-9 hours with my usage to 12+hours (same usage). i am really happy now (stock rom + stock kernel)
I have definately had better battery life so far. I flashed the factory image and then uber kernel. It seems to be about 30% better. The drain on the battery WHILE USING the phone isn't as bad as it used to be.
There seem to be fewer NLP wake locks than before for me. So I'm getting better battery life. Although I don't think Play Service was updated...

I did a dirty flash/update yesterday and today I've noticed better battery life all day long.
I think better battery and very good performance too.

As I have said in my previous post, "due to the complete Google Play Services package."
I used the same settings regardless of roms, be it Stock or CM/others. I am comparing "Stock as in no root, no alterations.", it does perform poorly in terms of battery life (even when you disable most of the Google apps), when compared to CM or other AOSP roms with Gapps.
I am comparing it under same settings and usage.
And that's what I get.
"cm has nothing good for battery" .... please, you may dislike cyanogenmod all you like for whatever reason, but in the end, it all comes down to what to you are comparing it to. and ease of use.
Cyanogenmod is the best option for someone who is not a tech geek and yet wants the customization features and with a stable updater to stay up to date.
I also observed slightly better battery life. Dirty upgrade.
Hi guys. I'm really considering buying a new phone. I already have a Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi) and I have fallen in love with Nexus 5, but I heard everyone saying that its battery life is bad. I see that many of you are owners of Nexus 5. Can you help me with my decision? I use my phone for browsing (3G mostly), music, calls and messages. Will Nexus's battery last more than a full day?
