Holy Battery... - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I have never had a battery be this good. Rooted with Greenify. Running Skyfall.

Kinda ridiculous. 16 hours and 60% full over here on just regular power save mode....SkyFall also

Yeah this phone gets way better battery life than my s4 did with same size battery. Love it. Does greenify really work that well? I have never used it as I have great battery life without it.

Lots of reviewers are talking about how the M8's battery lasted longer than the S5 too. Samsung needs to stop slacking on the software and give us a lightweight touchwiz. I absolutely love Sense 6 and I'm usually an AOSP guy. I'll probably try out GPE Roms once they're stable but honestly the new sense is everything I want out of android software. Minimal, clean, customizable, smooth and fast.

Twrp here. I've always been wary of cwm. Lol. No joke. And yes, the battery on this is ridiculous! I used the ONE MAX today to do a test. And we all know, it Has a bigger battery, 3300 mh. The M8 beat the MAX. Did the exact same things throughout the day, and no lie, the M8 won the test.

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting great battery life as well (though coming from a VZW GNex, anything would be an improvement). However...posting screenshots of how long your device has been off the charger with no other information (screen on time, app battery use) doesn't tell us anything.
Hell, I could leave my phone at home on wifi with the screen off and not touch it for the next 3 days, take a screenshot of any remaining battery life, and post it being like "OMG I got 3 days of battery life, this is amazing!" And it would be just about as informative and truthful as your screenshots (not including yours Evocm7, obviously).

sorry im kind of a noob i am aware of greenify i have used it but whats skyfall? I tried searching but nothing is coming up but james bond.
EDIT: Sorry havent looked at roms yet im just rooted atm

I hear what you're saying. Personally, I'm not trying to participate in any scientific study on the matter. All I know, and all I care, is that I've had the phone off charge for 29 hours now... using it the way I normally use it during an average day ( pretty light)... and I'm still at 40% battery.
Coming from a malfunctioning POS Droid Charge this phone is a godsend. I used to have to carry an extra battery just to get through an 8 hour shift at work starting on a full charge.

lol I came from a GNex, so we're probably in the same boat. Even on wifi with extremely minimal use (10-15m screen time all day, which with how slow and laggy it was I didn't really care)), I would be down into the 60%'s by bedtime. If I went to the gym with full battery, after listening to Pandora while doing weights, and watching Netflix during cardio, it would be into 20-30% by the time I left, total of maybe 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
I flashed Skyfall the other day after charging my phone to full, and by the time I was done flashing, re-installing everything from TiBu, updating a few out-of date apps, and setting everything up, it was down to maybe 95%. And that was with the screen on for probably 20 minutes straight.

I think taking into consideration the snapdragon 801 chip how it saves battery, sense 6 being light weight, if one needs to you have the choices of battery save mode and if that's not enough extreme battery save mode! This phone came built up from the floor up. Now if we just had the 1.56 software version with all the above included stock and operating correctly, I'm sure we would see even more battery savings!

There are very few "de facto standards" for anything in the Android ecosystem...which is why we like it. I use a combination of GSAM Battery Monitor with the root companion, and Wakelock Detector.

Dont get me wrong, I get decent battery life, but nothing like you guys. For those of you with amazing OST are you guys using Google Now? I just installed wake lock detector to see what is causing my batt to drain more than others.

I couldn't care less. I get 24+ hours on my battery now, with chargers in everyplace I frequent throughout the day and a spare charger in my laptop bag for those emergency moments.
I seriously doubt you really use your phone very much. The only time I got 24 hours out of my battery was when it sat unused an entire day.
For the rest of us that actually want to use a smartphone that isn't crippled, this extended life battery is a huge deal. So yes, OP, I check their website every week to see if I somehow missed the announcement. I can't wait!

x2, atleast i'm not the only one that knows how to manage their cell phone battery life.
Right now i'm sitting at 80% with 3h 52m on, time without signal at 1%, screen on time of 16 minutes voice calls of 7 minutes, and I've been listening to music on my phone from the SDcard for about 20 minutes.
If you actually take the time to set up your phone correctly, you can save a ton of battery life. I use tasker to accomplish a majority of these tasks. For instance, when angry birds is being played i have the phone automatically adjust the brightness to a slightly higher level and i have it turn off the data connections and wifi. Then when i exit it returns the phone to the state it was in before angry birds. I have a ton of these profiles set up.
how many people will take the time for that?

Battery life isn't the worst, but for me its inconsistant. One day I will make trough a day, next day ill get half.
I know it will get better with froyo and updated kernals and roms.
The touch pro 2 had great battery, I always had gps on and palringo going and didn't have to worry about battery.

I had the same issue. I found that it was something causing the battery not to go to sleep. For me, the music player (Fascinate one from EE rom) would start CorePlayerServices which would run and not allow the phone to sleep. As long as that service is running, my phone wasn't sleeping correctly. There are other things that cause this not sleeping problem as well, but that is the only one I have identified personally.

You are misunderstanding the reasons why I want this battery. Yes I could set up my phone to last for a whole day no problem, but that would severely limit the amount of time that I spend on it and the purpose for which I use it so often. I am constantly testing and flashing new zips over and over and over, which will drain the battery tremendously as it is. Testing a 32 x 32 icon on a 480x800 screen is straining on the eyes when the brightness is turned all the way down, so that must be up to see the fine details of images that I have edited.
I understand that it is completely possible to make my phone last much longer than it currently is, but taking the steps necessary to do so would thus render it useless for the tasks that I am trying to accomplish. I live off of my phone because I can and choose to do so, it is my hobby to develop custom themes/ROMs for the Epic and I don't plan on stopping just to have my battery life last 2x longer.
When this comes out it will mean the difference between being able to do whatever I want on my phone for 8-10 hours under very heavy use and only being able to make it last for less than 6 hours. IMO this is significantly to my advantage.
what is med usage to you?

Tips to GREAT Battery Life!

Here are the settings I'm running on CM7 to get amazingly bananas battery life (with the display being on for about 5 hours!)..
1. Conservative governor: 245mhz - 1017mhz in CM7 settings
2. Install the 'BatteryCalibration' app from the market. This app caused the single biggest improvement for me after having flashed so many roms and never calibrating the battery. If you've calibrated it before though, I don't think it'll be very useful for you.
3. Install 'NoBars' from the market to automatically turn on airplane mode when you have no service. (This might be useless to some of you if you always have a signal; Very useful in NYC subway though)
4. Use a 2G toggle widget to have the phone only use the Edge connection when you only need it to receive calls/ texts and don't need the high speeds. I use the toggle widget in the CM7 notification bar. HUGE battery saver.
Give these a shot and let us know how they work for you
I've reached the end of my day and here are my final stats..
Mmy display has been on on over 5 hours now and I have 5% of the battery left. Seems more than good enough for me. Hopefully it will be for some of you too

Question: It's cool that your display was on for 3 hours, but what did you do as far as app usage??
If you did use your phone "a heck of a lot" wouldn't some apps like "internet" "maps" or something show up on the battery use %'s???
For example, currently, other than phone idle, cell standby, voice calls and android, there's also internet, mail, maps, and other apps that I used today alot.
Good observation. I have no idea how android chooses which apps to show on there, but I think it depends on the ROM? I remember on Iced Glacier cell standby would barely use 5% of the battery and on CM7 it uses >40% consistently. Idk.
Maybe what those apps used up here was nothing compared to the display, wifi and phone idle time.. Just a guess.. But I did use the browser and xda app and listened to music via the Rdio app running in the background several times throughout the day, and sent multiple texts and have had my wifi on for about 5 hours now. I can't really find a menu that would show these statistics except in the Spare Parts app, and here you go..
I got 17 hours just yesterday with 9% left with moderate to heavy use (texting, web browsing and ps1 emulation).
I didn't do anything besides use faux's kernel with the smartass govenor. I have the max speed overclocked to 1.8 as well...
Nice. I just got over flashing new kernels for a while since the stock CM7 one has everything functioning perfectly and new kernels would improve on something but mess up something else in my experience.
I can't seem to find a 2g toggle widget that works with Royal Glacier. (one touch, I've found a few that take you to settings) When I was running Royal Ginger I would always use the one that came in the notification bar.
Wifi status is also a good app to remind the forgetful to turn off wifi when they leave the Area.

since my last boot. 8:10AM when i loaded the new CM7. 1h 1m 59s.
Unless I'm missing something, the 'BatteryCalibration' app won't increase your battery life. It will just help to get a more accurate reading of your battery level.
I've played around with different roms and kernels. And yes, they do have a small effect on battery life, but not all that much.
Here's my tip for battery life. Get on ebay and buy one the of the cheap packages from Hong Kong with 3 batteries and a standalone charger. Like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/3x-New-1500mAh-Battery-Charger-HTC-Mytouch-4G-Merge-/290556738794?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item43a687fcea
I bought a similar package a few months ago and now I never have battery problems. Nor do I have to take a chance on wearing out my micro-usb jack like I've seen happen on a lot of other phones.
Maybe. All I know is my battery increased dramatically after running that app once.
I measure battery life by how many hours I am able to keep my display on before it dies rather than how long after it comes off the charger (like nedilinger does). My battery used to die after about 3 hours of the display being on. Now it consistently lasts 5 hours.
Anyway, I was just trying to let others know what I did to get a really good battery life on my phone thinking it might be helpful. Apparently that's not appreciated. Thanks tho.

you say you don't sacrifice 4g but you admit you have a 2g/edge widget?
To me "not sacrificing 4g" means not ever turning it off, maybe i'm mistaken
I had battery issues, I'd have to charge it mid day else it would die. Juicedefender helped a bit (claimed to do 1.7x battery life) but I uninstalled it, rooted the phone, and uninstalled a bunch of stock apps
For some reason now my battery lasts a very very long time, don't know how or why that is. I also admit I don't use it as heavily as some people, but my habits have not changed and I did have to charge it mid day (like i said) even with little usage

Obviously, it's hard to say without describing how I use my phone, but I get probably 10-15 hours of medium-high usage. I probably get about 4-5 hours of talk time. I'd say the Chinese ebay batteries probably last 80-90% as long as the OEM battery. Quite decent considering the price.
My earlier thoughts about the BatteryCalibration app could be wrong. I don't really know all the details about how Android battery calibration works. I just assumed that it simply learns about all the bad spots in your battery so that your phone doesn't instantly jump from 80% to 30%. I also assumed that the phone would die when the battery had no power left, as opposed to when it says 0%, but maybe that's not the case. Regardless, if it helps you, more power to you and I appreciate you sharing the app. I didn't mean to come off as an unappreciative ****. If I did, sorry bout that.

[VERIZON] Absolutely Horrible Battery Life

My only concern when buying this phone was battery life compared to my Razr Maxx. I was expecting it to be shorter...... but not this much!
I have tried restarting and clearing cache+dalvik. It seems to keep happening.
Eesh that is definitely not normal. I have the Verizon GS3 and get far better battery life.
I would suggest a factory reset. That seems to work for some people. Otherwise I'd suggest getting a replacement.

I love these sort of posts. You obviously have a wake lock that is keeping your processor active when not in use. Download "BetterBatteryStats" from the market and check out your wake locks and partial wake locks. It will be petty obvious at that point. It's most likely a rouge app.
It isn't a systemic problem with the phone. I get around 20 hours with slightly more than moderate use.

I had the same issue the other night. Took it off the charger and fell asleep.... when I woke up over 1/4 of my battery was gone. Android System showed the same high percentage used. I went into apps, android system, force stopped it, rebooted.. Hasn't crept back up since.
From my understanding, under idle, android system should be in the 5-10% range.
I did a full system reboot, pulled battery and restarted - all better. Something was tripping my battery up as well. It's not the phone, somethings causing it.

I have Verizon GS3 and battery life is great. I too had an issue with battery drainning fast on my GS3 but found out it was Enhanced Mail Apps that I was using that killed my Battery so I uninstalled it. After the uninstall, my battery life has been great. You really can't compare battery life between Mot Raze and GS3. GS3 is far superior.
There must be an apps that is draining your battery.
Here is my battery stats. This is with moderate use.

That is far from normal.
100% LTE. Moderate with periods of heavy use. I would run a few cycles to see if your battery performance improves. Also, as other users have stated, keep running BetterBatteryStats for a few days and it will keep catching the wakelocks you're getting. If you still can't figure out the problem, I would seek a replacement battery from Verizon just to be sure.
Edit: Forgot to mention this before. If you haven't yet, plug your phone in and charge the battery to 100% with the phone powered down completely. Then let it run all the way down before charging it again. Doing this once effectively "trains" the battery to better read its full capacity and won't hurt the overall life of the battery. This is something that I find is often missed with new batteries, but I have had great results with.

Thanks for the replies... i did a factory reset and did not use Titanium to restore the apps in case one of them was causing the drain.
I'm still getting random drains by "gsiff_daemon" (which i'm seeing others having issues with this too). Fortunately this drain is fixed by a simple reboot. Yesterday I was able to get just under 15 hours of what i'd call light'ish use (under an hour of cached Spotify, WiFi all day, 10 minutes of phone calls, 30 SMS) and was at about 5%. Keep in mind I had about an hour in there where good 'ol gsiff was suckin down the battery (It took about 20% in 45 minutes).
The final test for me is this weekend. If it can last a whole day with my moderate/heavy usage.... i'm keeping it. Otherwise, its back to the Maxx.
This doesn't address the root cause of something preventing the phone from sleeping, but I thought I would mention an app that helps extend battery life. Personally I get great battery life regardless of any "saver" apps, and have never gotten less than 12 hours on a full charge, and that was very heavy use. I probably average closer to 20 on moderate-heavy use.
Anyway, as some know there are apps that will automatically turn off your data connection while the screen is off. Most turn the connection on for 1 minute, every 15 minutes while the screen is off so that you still receive email, ect... This does not affect phone calls and text messages, as they do not use apn and would be received immediately. These products can significantly extend battery life with little complication, particularly if you stay connected to LTE all the time. As an example, overnight I might lose about 20% of my battery or more while sleeping. With one of these apps I lose only about 4-6%.
I personally like the BatteryDefender app, very simple to use, and very reliable.

Did you have your phone on Airplane Mode or something for half the day?

"Hypermiler" (Battery Life) Tips

This is a little bit of a boast, I guess you could say... but also educational in a way.
This is my most recent battery life. I found that when I posted my screenshots, people think they are faked in some way. (Posted it here and other GS3 forums) They are not. I am using the stock battery my phone came with. NOT an extended battery. And you can see from the battery graph that the phone was not charged. I guess this is to show that you can use your phone heavily, and still get amazing battery life.
I am using the stock jellybean leak. Not rooted or unlocked.
This is everything I have done to get good battery life.
-I turned the LED touch lights off (I don't like them, they're so bright)
-I have all vibrations off. My phone does not ever vibrate.
-I have power save on.
-I have S-Voice "wake command" off.
-I have motion control disabled.
-I am almost always on wifi (work & home)
-When I am on wifi, I turn mobile data off.
-When I am going to bed, I put my phone in airplane mode.
-I rely heavily on the task manager, I clear my open windows and under the "RAM" tab I clear memory. Probably once an hour.
-I have my sync OFF. I check my email manually.
-Auto brightness.
-I never partially charge. I let my battery go all the way down to 1% then I charge it to 100%. Always.
-Always have a dark background, if possible.
Thats everything. Mind you, I didn't make or receive any phone calls on this cycle. But I did use my phone, as you can see I didn't just let it sit around. Device idle was like 3%?
Anyone else a "hypermiler" like me? I don't get this much screen time every time, it ranges from 5-7. I've gotten more than this and I've gotten less.
Hope this can help even if it's only a little.

-Clearing the ram too much actually drains the battery more because certain apps will have to auto start again every time you clear memory
-Keeping it at around 0-30% all the time should save you more.(I can still see my screen during the day at 30%)
-That doesn't do anything.

-Are there no A/C outlets in your bedroom?
-What the previous guy said, this is a stupid thing to do. Java was designed around efficient use of resources, and restarting running apps (which would happen, unless you have them removed entirely) would use more processing power than you had saved by not having the tasks running in the first place.
-Using Auto is causing the system to periodically poll the light sensor, draining more battery than used otherwise.
-This is how you kill Li-Ion batteries (one way, at least). The whole spiel about discharging fully, THEN charging fully or the battery will have some sort of "memory" of capacity less than actual capacity is how Ni-Cad rechargables work, not Li-Ions. Li-Ion batteries are the opposite. For superior life, keep them topped up as much as possible. FYI
I hope THIS helped, more than a little.
There are plenty of outlets in my room. Lol I just don't need to use them that often as you can see also I hate getting calls and messages in the middle of the night but I use my phone as an alarm sometimes so airplane mode just seems convenient.
This is just what I do. I mean, some of the things I do may not help at all. But this is what I do with Android phones and I've always gotten really good battery life. I've always, always gone down to 1% then charged up to 100% and I've never had a battery go bad on me. Then again I only ever keep a phone for 1 year. I do know that these batteries don't have the memory problem, I just can't bring myself to not fully discharge or charge. I have mild OCD, for real. Little things like that brother me
I'll play with backlighting to see what that does for me.
I've gotta be doing something right. Idk about the task manager, I've just always liked not having programs running if I don't need them to be. I know they arent "running" but it just gives me peace of mind, I guess.
Thanks for the recommendations I will try them.

You getting really good battery life =/= you getting the best battery life possible.
I have pushed ~2 days of battery life without charging many times on my GS3 (with all the bells and whistles running, just mobile data turned off when i'm not commuting), i just don't have a reliable measurement because:
1. I'm flashing mods/roms/kernels/whatever multiple times per week, and
2. I usually charge my phone when it's convenient, which is fairly often.

I stopped flashing because of my OCD. I mean, I'm not crazy but it causes perfection issues and all the ROMs I was flashing had glitches here and there and Idk if you've known anyone with OCD but with the perfection issue, those glitches were all I could think about. So there went flashing. Lol.
Also comes into play with the charging thing. You seem knowledgeable in what you said but even though you said keeping it topped up is best, in my mind, that's destroying my battery. Lol. I really do appreciate your info though.

I'm glad you said it, so that I didn't have to. :silly:
I read your post and the first thing that came to mind was, "there is medication for that, you know."
Here's my .02. My battery never lasts that long. Not even close. I'd feel disappointed if it did. I bought my gsiii with the intent of gobbling up unlimited data and using the oc'd processor to run apps till the phone is so hot I have to set it down. I've burned up almost 6gigs of data since the 7th. I get around 4 hours of screen on time most generally. I also throw it on a charger whenever I have the chance. My battery rarely dips below 50%. Like others have said, full discharge cycles are for ni-cad batteries. Li-ion doesn't benefit. Good battery life for me is the lg flip phone we have on a diff line that lasts a couple weeks.

Okay, okay, as long as you admit it... I'll stop being a snarky jerk. I'm totally the same way though. Perfectionist to the core.
It's a very bad idea to let the battery go down to 1% regularly, lithium batteries should be charged more often for better life and more cycles
Sorry but I still just don't believe 7 hours of screen on time. 4 is above average even amazing screen on time for this phone and stock battery. I suppose there is the possibility of using 0 percent brightness, or even lux brightness or something similar to get the brightness even lower.
You said you use auto brightness, I'm sorry I just don't buy it.
People with the extended batteries are getting 7 hours of screen on time not stock batteries.
7 hours of screen on time is literally double almost every other phone on the market with stock batteries. I really fail to see how having minimum usage and a high performing rom will get you double screen on time.
Edit: with that said, in my current situation I will never have wifi access plus I tether a lot so I really have yet to personally see screen on time since I rooted. Before root and stock I got about 3.5 of screen on time.
Not trying to be a douche or anything just very curious about how 7 hours comes about.

you dont get 7 hours because you are not doing what op did for perfection, and you just like other "4 hour" guys in this thread. I can confirm 7 hours usage is totally possible and what left can support one day idle time when you turn off data etc. Iusually dont do that because I like my phone work at full functionality, but I also like tinkering around to keep maximum use of juice, by eliminating wake locks and autostart.
killing background helps sometimes because some stupid apps keeping using cpu after backgrounded. op go and get a iphone, its perfect for OCD since it can get zero unwanted background activity, amazing idle time and stable usage with relatively easier configuration and tweaking.
1% is NO. 1 battery killer, heat is NO. 2, top up at 100% is NO. 3. Li based battery is at best 40%. but plaese its just a phone, charge and use anytime you want. phone outdated way earlier than battery.

While I understand what you're saying I think you misread my post. I was strickly referring to the screen on time which 7 hours of screen on time with stock battery is inconceivable. 4 is about the most you would normally see.
7 hours of USAGE is common.

Well I mean. You don't have to believe me. I mean I have nothing to offer but my word. I do use auto brightness. But because of the suggestion I'll probably set it to manual and see what that does.
I got 7 hours screen on time with the stock battery. The battery says "3.8 v li-ion battery"
I've gotten more than this is the past but I've also gotten less.
Like I said you don't have to believe me but... I'm using the stock battery.
And to the poster who mentioned to get an iPhone - I have one for my business line

put my phone through the paces with fantasy football.
held up pretty well. stock battery mind you. on pace for nearly 8 hrs of on screen time. This isnt with typical use though... With typical use I can get 20hrs and 5-6 hrs of screen time. I thought anywhere from 4-6 hours of on screen time was what people were suppposed to be getting.
Yeah we all use our phone differently. I rarely actually talk on the phone with my GS3 because I use my iPhone for that. But everything else I do on my GS3, reading news, some browsing, xda.
I just thought I'd share what I do for people that may want to get better battery life.

Then I shouldn't use the word "usage". I meant 7 hours screen on time. Sometimes I got 8 or more, but only use it continuously after charging, no idle time.

Yet that involves turning off data. IMO the smartphone should always stay online. In my experience, iPhone can get constant -4 ~ -5ma juice flow during idle even with data (2G) and all the push notifications on, which are the only things I want for stay online. I feel its hard to get similar result on my GS3 though.

I'm always online, whether it's wi-fi or 4G. Luckily I have wi-fi at home and at work.
Like, literally as I'm walking out the door of my house, I turn on my mobile data, and when I get to work I turn it off. When I'm leaving work I turn mobile data back on and when I get home I turn it off.

what you did is pointless. If you leave data on, data is not connected when wifi is connected, and it will connect automatically when no wifi connection.

It's not pointless to me. As I said a few posts before... I have OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. Things like this affect me. I know that being connected to Wi-Fi that data is not connected, but in my brain, it's as if something is telling me that because my data toggle is on, it's running.
I really can't help it.

Battery Life Complaints?

I was just wondering why there are so many complaints about the battery life on the s3...right now I'm on aosp pure Google and with 18 hours on the battery for the day I'm at 87%...This is pretty average with most of the aosp Roms I have used...I turn of WiFi and 4g unless I'm using them and I have a few battery tweaks in my init.d and build.prop that are on just about every site that is android related and are pretty easy to apply... If .7 % per hour is really something to complain about then get a junky flip phone...you should be able to get like 3 days out of that...battery drain is going to happen when you basically have a handheld laptop with the power and capabilities the s3 has...Just sayin

A lot of people here are considered in the 'heavy usage' category, which the stock battery drains quickly. For me, I could drain the battery in 5-6 hours easily. And fyi the time the phone is on matters very little, it's all about screen on time. With my extended battery I get 8-10 hours of SCREEN ON which is the most important aspect, glad the stock battery works okay for your usage, everyone is different.

Geeez...what are you doing to kill an extended battery like that? I get that much while playing games and using my browser...i am also over clocked at 2106mhz...i wonder if there a lot of these going out with bad batteries...i see more complaints from people getting drain with screen off than on

Unfortunately I believe you're confusing uptime with the amount of time the screen is on, I can guarantee you do not get 8-10 hours of the screen being on in a single charge with the stock battery, even at the lowest brightness setting. Post screen shots of those two screens when you get that much, I'd love to see it! That was only my 3rd cycle with the 4400 mAh battery, it's even better now, I just haven't taken any new screen shots.
Oh, and my brightness was at 50-75% that day.
