Bad battery life? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else having terrible battery life? I'm running stock with francos kernel and it's very lackluster to say the least. Even with the stock kernel it was not impressive at all. On my G2, that has a smaller battery and an older processor I got almost 24-26 hours with anywhere from 5-7 SOT hours consistently. Granted the G2 has a slightly smaller screen, I don't see that making much of a difference. This phone has a 3100 mah as opposed to the G2 3000 and has a newer 801 which is supposed to be a power sipper, as opposed to the G2's 800. I'm currently at 7 hours of battery time with 37 minutes of SOT and sitting at 81%, which is god awful. I mean the phone so far idols terribly and battery drains fairly quick while not being used, I checked battery stats and there's nothing out of the ordinary. I just don't understand how a 3100 mah battery with an 801 can be so lackluster.

Also I took these two pics, something's wrong here. Stand by is definitely something my phone was a lot but it should not be the reason for that much percent of the battery. I've never had a phone with stand by taking that much battery, screen is usually always by far the highest % even with not much sot, and I was in a area where I've always had reception so not sure why it had to search for 15% of the time.

Does anyone have an idea? Could it be kernel related? I'm on the Franco r7. I've never had a phone ever that used so much battery so quickly on being idle and on stand by.

Getting best battery per charge out of your skyrocket.

I am opening this thread to facilitate skyrocket users to share their experiences on getting most out of one charge.
I generally prefer something that shows percentage on top since the battery display does not provide detailed info.
I have tried few free aaps and finally found the best one. It is '2x battery' app. I used to loose 4 - 7% per hour in standby mode. With this app, It gives me 1-2% most in burn in hour. While writing this, I am 36% after 17 hours of regular use.

im at 11 hours and have 89% left using Juice Defender plus..
The only problem with JuiceDefender is that if you use messaging apps like Kik or WhatsApp, it will make it so that you don't receive the messages unless you have your phone active, making your phone pretty much useless.
I dont buy anything til I see proof of screen time and battery use screens.
Just got the phone yesterday, but I must say, coming from the epic 4g touch where I was getting 25 hours with 5 hours screen on time, it doesn't look promising.
But to be fair I haven't underclocked, undervolted and all the other tricks yet. Properly working sleep mode is essential.

I will try the 2x battery,
I use JuiceDefenderPro; custom profile
After 7 hours on battery, I am at 90%.
light calls, 1-bar of signal on 4gLTE, apps grab data every 15 minutes.
Anyone see results w/ underclocking?
I am using Antutu's CPU Master (Free), but my results have been inconclusive (sometimes uses less, sometimes uses more.. can't tell). I am considering getting the paid version of the app (or SetCPU or Android Overclock) to try the screen off profiles.
I use set CPU to underclock when the screen is off and when battery is low. In my experiences the savings are noticeable but not major.
With set CPU, juice defender, and a de-bloated rom I usually go to bed with around 30% battery remaining. That's about on par with my nexus one running cm7.

I haven't really had issues with the battery on my skyrocket. Then again, I'm not I'm an LTE area but you can pretty much expect bad battery life in an LTE area. Regardless, I have noticed something odd about the battery on my skyrocket, and maybe someone can confirm my observations here...my skyrocket tends to lose battery fairly constantly at first up to about the 80% mark then slows down the rate off loss of charge and I notice another huge slow down in drainage at the 30% mark. I've seen this repeatedly no matter what I do. In other words, screen on or off, I tend to see this happen. I'm not complaining as I think a 20 hour battery is great when using it heavily. And I kind of think of the slow drainage at the 30% as a nice perk. I'm running it stock so I can't chock it up to anythnng other than the phone. Any thoughts?

Why does everyone say this about LTE? It is simply not true. All LTE does is give you higher bandwidth with less delay. Wan't good battery life, run a custom ROM. I am running the ICS v4.1 and I must say it is much better than anything else I have tried. I keep 4sq, FB, twitter and gmail all running in the background along with BeWeather updating every hour.

Everyone says that about LTE because (from what I've read) running LTE requires more power due to several reasons. I did a quick search and sprint may be a great indication of proof of the power consumption of "4g" from what I've read their phones disengage wimax when not in use in order to conserve energy. If LTE is faster and operates at higher frequencies (if I'm not mistaken) then it should require more energy. I could go outside the box and come up with some equations that relate frequency to energy (they exist) but I will admit I don't know if they can be applied to the circuitry in phones though I don't see why it wouldn't as the theory is sound. In any case, yes running a custom rom will do wonders for battery but some of us haven't taken that plunge yet. As it is, my stock skyrocket is doing great for me lasting 20 hours. Im out of the house at 6am and usually don't get home till 8 at night. It makes it through that with ease. I'm happy with that. Bring on the LTE, I'll cross that battery consumption bridge when we get there.

How many months is your battery good for on your G2X?

I've had the same battery for my G2x since I bought it nine months ago. I'm beginning to notice that it's draining quicker, especially when turned off. It's the stock 1500mAh LG battery.

I agree. My wife and I got our G2x's at the same time. She abuses her battery and it shows. She does lots of deep cycles and runs her phone hard till it's hot often. Hers has always been stock while I've been on CM7 with Trinity ELP kernel most of the time. I lose about 1% every 5 hours while idle. About 15% per hour when on long calls or browsing web.
Ours phones/batteries are 10 months old.
Huh?

When you say turned off, you mean idle right? Better batterystats is an excellent tool to troubleshoot this. It will change your life. S/w much more likely to be the problem than hardware.

No, I mean I power the phone OFF. There is still a battery drain of about 1% every two hours.
When I pull the battery for a few hours and put it back in, no drain.

LOL. You're right. I suppose I was basing my comparison on my daily use vs her daily use. Also my idle drain (at night) vs hers.
Give me some time to run both batteries hard through an identical series of tests.
I was thinking of running Netflix movies till my battery dies. Then swap in her battery
And run the same movies on the same phone till that battery dies too.
I'd like to run the test side-by-side, but other variables would enter the mix. So its gonna take some time...

Don't swap batteries. Android phones calibrate themselves to the battery drain curve of your particular battery in a system file called batterystats.bin. If you swap batteries you'll get wildly inaccurate battery drain readings for a few cycles until it settles down.

It really depends on how you've used your phone and how you've cycled your battery. It also depends on which rom you're running. If you have everything turned on all the time (data, wifi, bluetooth, gps, full brightness) then it's going to cycle and die faster. If you're conservative and plug it in when power is available, monitor overacting apps ofr network usage in particular, turn of wifi/bluetooth/gps when not in use and generally keep brightness at 20% or below (except in bright sun of course) then you'll get a much longer lifespan. Lithium ion batteries degrade over time even if unused. They degrade faster when used, when heated and fastest when heated while being used.
It really depends if you're getting enough battery life for your purposes but these days most people will be fine after a couple of years on most devices with most batteries.
Have had my G2X for 15 months now, still using original battery with no noticeable loss of capacity. I usually make it about 15-18 hours on a charge cycle depending on my usage throughout the day.

Battery Life Complaints?

I was just wondering why there are so many complaints about the battery life on the s3...right now I'm on aosp pure Google and with 18 hours on the battery for the day I'm at 87%...This is pretty average with most of the aosp Roms I have used...I turn of WiFi and 4g unless I'm using them and I have a few battery tweaks in my init.d and build.prop that are on just about every site that is android related and are pretty easy to apply... If .7 % per hour is really something to complain about then get a junky flip phone...you should be able to get like 3 days out of that...battery drain is going to happen when you basically have a handheld laptop with the power and capabilities the s3 has...Just sayin

A lot of people here are considered in the 'heavy usage' category, which the stock battery drains quickly. For me, I could drain the battery in 5-6 hours easily. And fyi the time the phone is on matters very little, it's all about screen on time. With my extended battery I get 8-10 hours of SCREEN ON which is the most important aspect, glad the stock battery works okay for your usage, everyone is different.

Unfortunately I believe you're confusing uptime with the amount of time the screen is on, I can guarantee you do not get 8-10 hours of the screen being on in a single charge with the stock battery, even at the lowest brightness setting. Post screen shots of those two screens when you get that much, I'd love to see it! That was only my 3rd cycle with the 4400 mAh battery, it's even better now, I just haven't taken any new screen shots.
Oh, and my brightness was at 50-75% that day.

The battery sucks
I am at 9 hours and 45 minutes, 18 seconds on my current charge. I have 70% remaining. 19% of my used battery life has been voice calls so far today also. I get more than a day easily but I charge every night just to be sure my alarm goes off in the morning, but on weekends I get two full days at time pretty easy.
I use waze at times to navigate and play music at the same time in the car for about 3 hours at a time, that can use my full battery in eight hours total, but for using everything basically I fine with that! Doing nothing special to save power either.

my rom and kernel are rastakat with trinity kernel. but battery life is mostly determined by how you personally set up your phone, how you personally use the phone, how you manage your phone and apps(plus keeping away from known terribly written apps, like facebook), and, very importantly, the quality of your data/phone connection(this makes a big difference in battery life).

no. but id say that depending how you use your device(we all use it differently), that 2.5-4.5h screen on time would be considered normal. with some effort in managing your device/apps, 4.5-7h sot is possible, with 7h sot being the extreme end(most wont ever see 7h, but a few will). i normally see between 5-6.5h sot.

Lots of reviewers are talking about how the M8's battery lasted longer than the S5 too. Samsung needs to stop slacking on the software and give us a lightweight touchwiz. I absolutely love Sense 6 and I'm usually an AOSP guy. I'll probably try out GPE Roms once they're stable but honestly the new sense is everything I want out of android software. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting great battery life as well (though coming from a VZW GNex, anything would be an improvement). However...posting screenshots of how long your device has been off the charger with no other information (screen on time, app battery use) doesn't tell us anything.
Hell, I could leave my phone at home on wifi with the screen off and not touch it for the next 3 days, take a screenshot of any remaining battery life, and post it being like "OMG I got 3 days of battery life, this is amazing!" And it would be just about as informative and truthful as your screenshots (not including yours Evocm7, obviously).

I hear what you're saying. Personally, I'm not trying to participate in any scientific study on the matter. All I know, and all I care, is that I've had the phone off charge for 29 hours now... using it the way I normally use it during an average day ( pretty light)... and I'm still at 40% battery.
Coming from a malfunctioning POS Droid Charge this phone is a godsend. I used to have to carry an extra battery just to get through an 8 hour shift at work starting on a full charge.

lol I came from a GNex, so we're probably in the same boat. Even on wifi with extremely minimal use (10-15m screen time all day, which with how slow and laggy it was I didn't really care)), I would be down into the 60%'s by bedtime. If I went to the gym with full battery, after listening to Pandora while doing weights, and watching Netflix during cardio, it would be into 20-30% by the time I left, total of maybe 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
I flashed Skyfall the other day after charging my phone to full, and by the time I was done flashing, re-installing everything from TiBu, updating a few out-of date apps, and setting everything up, it was down to maybe 95%. And that was with the screen on for probably 20 minutes straight.

I think taking into consideration the snapdragon 801 chip how it saves battery, sense 6 being light weight, if one needs to you have the choices of battery save mode and if that's not enough extreme battery save mode! This phone came built up from the floor up. Now if we just had the 1.56 software version with all the above included stock and operating correctly, I'm sure we would see even more battery savings!

There are very few "de facto standards" for anything in the Android ecosystem...which is why we like it. I use a combination of GSAM Battery Monitor with the root companion, and Wakelock Detector.
Dont get me wrong, I get decent battery life, but nothing like you guys. For those of you with amazing OST are you guys using Google Now? I just installed wake lock detector to see what is causing my batt to drain more than others.
