[GUIDE] Fixing OPO CM11S modem problem - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

*** After gathered most of the comments around, I think only China version OPO having this problem ***
Some of you may encounter some problems as me while running on CM11s (Regardless of version 22Q/22R/25R)
These are the symptoms that you may encounter if your modem are not running correctly.
4G = Data connection alright, but unable to make any calls. (While trying to call, "Out of service area" will be displayed)
3G = Data connection not stable, signals are dropping, calls are dropping.
2G = Both Data and Call network are fine, but no one is going to use 2G in a high performance phone like our OPO.
These steps "MAY" or "MAY NOT" work on your phone, I'm not a very professional guy in android development. But I am here to sharing my experiences in solving this problem
1) Download the modem bin file from this link (This is extracted from CM11 Snapshot m8 - https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=bacon)
You can download the zip file from there. then extract "NON-HLOS.bin" from the zip file
Here I provide you a mediafire link for quicker access:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/uukgumzi2hf6ey5/NON-HLOS.bin
2) Copy "NON-HLOS.bin" into same directory as fastboot.exe
3) Boot your OPO into fastboot mode.
4) Follow the steps in the CMD of this attached photo

P/S: there are a lot of guides which make your phone connect with your PC thru adb interface. so you can google around these information.
Again I'm not an expert, but I got these working, there are risks of bricking/damaging your phone. so take care

Thank you! I'll give it a try

I don't really get you.. if you had the symptoms stated above. then you should do this.

@reinerlee i was wondering if the modem you posted is the international one to get 4g in USA with the Chinese opo?

As far as i know, No. it's more on the hardware side (chipset). it can't be fixed via any software.
You can refer to this.

@reinerlee so there isn't a flashable modem to get 4g lte in USA with Chinese opo? I only get hspa +

dude, there's no way to do it via flashing anything. it's the hardware.

I'm having a similar issue but my phone is the International not the Chinese version, I assumed I couldn't make calls on 4g because T-mobile VoLTE isn't out yet. I'm very tempted to try this to see if it solves my terrible reception issue. What are the risks in doing this?

I think, there is almost no risk of doing this. if this can't work on your phone. you can just simply swap the modem with the others one.

Thank you man. You are my God. Works fine and you solve my problem.

What problem did you have? I'm on AT&T and have trouble keeping strong LTE compared to other phones. My phone will drop to H+ and get stuck in H a lot.

I was messing around flashing roms(last flash was oneplus aosp) with twrp and I lost my modem(baseband) and do not have voice or data. I tried flashing just NON-HLOS.bin but did not regain the baseband. What to do?

I was having terrible connection issues when I received my Opo.
I ended up flashing the latest CM nightly, since it includes the radio now, and that greatly improved my connection.
Before at home I was going 50% with no signal. Now it doesn't drop. I used the 7/24 build. Then went back to my PA backup.

Awesome! This is encouraging to hear. The radio issues are my biggest gripe with the phone. Even right now as I type this it's jumping between H and H+ when I should have LTE.
Is there a separate radio file from the nightlies we can flash in the mean time?
Edit: OK LTE is back!

poor reception
I flashed this modem but problem still exist. I don't have 4g coverage in my area so I basically use 3g (HSDPA+) and I noticed that the signal strength is not quite as good as other phones in the same area. And signal strength goes up and down all the time, from -80 dBm to -107 dBm and sometimes even switches to the 2g (EDGE). Also noticed that if the phone is downloading data signal strength is good, around -80 dBm. In idle signal strength goes down and became poor, around -101 dBm.

Thank you - works a treat!
Would I be right in saying that if I factory reset my phone, I would keep the radio I flashed rather than revert back to the original as it has been overwritten?
Thanks

I'm using China version. But I don't think there is difference, people on official oneplus forum have the same inconsistent reception signal.
Yes, this modem behaves better than older versions, but still not as good as other phones.

Signal Strength

I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing weak signal strength inside normal buildings.
Outside I often get only 2 bars of signal strength in well equipped areas. Other phones like Motorola Milestone ore Htc one x get far better signal with the same provider.
It also happens that i dont get signal in buildings at all ( where other phons on same network getting at least 2 bars od signal)
Does the photon q have a bad antenna or what may cause this weakness? It drives me nuts because this is the only thing I really don't like on the Q.
Thx for you're answers!

I don't have any signal issues. My signal bar always gets full inside and outside my home. It's better than my D4 with the same provider.

I can't say about the GSM radio, but my CDMA radio works great - inside or out.
I'd imagine your phone has been "modified" slightly to run on O2... Might have had something to do with it lol. Did you do the modifications?

Nope I let CornolihoGSM do this.
Maybe my provider sucks these days. Any hints according to the above picture? How may I have 3g connectivity with good speed and also no signal Strength/ no Bars?
Edit:
Also I would say the Signal bar is very 'jumpy'. If I lay down my phone and don't move it, the bar jumps sometimes between 5 and 2 bars on no position change..

Who knows, since the hardware has been hacked. If the phone has always behaved like this, it could be a result of the hardware hack.
Heck, even if the issue crops up - maybe a solder went bad, something went loose? Who knows, could be anything...
I guess it's just the inherent risk in such things. Good luck.
AW: Signal Strength
Sure thing there is some kind of risk
I'll retry with another provider this day. Maybe something went wrong with cuttings the old normal-sized sim into micro-sim format.
I'll return back here after testing. This thread was only for getting additional feedback from other photon q users if the q has weaker antenna or something built in. As this mightn't be the case I will investigate further on my phone/provider.

Filters for CDMA & GSM are worse than for GSM only => worse gain => worse signal. But I don't have these problems either, it's perhaps lower than the MS, but still working perfectly.
After further comparison with my girlfriends HTC One X I was wondering if the differences between 'Neighboring CID' have to do something with the weak Signal?
What is the Neighboring CID information used for? Does it mean the Phone has no Information about "other" Cells than the one I am currently connected to?
What does youre phone info say?
That's just current state.
Try editing build.prop. Make sure it's stated like below :
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice = 0
ro.telephony.default_network = 3
I haven't tested on my Photon Q as I only use CDMA. I fix my D4 GSM signal by using method above. Make sure you backup build.prop first.
AW: Signal Strength
Thanx for the info, but changing those properties did change nothing.
I currently think every thing is fine and my provider is the cause of evil. If I turn on gsm only I get full bars even in buildings. Maybe the UMTS signal is to bad. nevertheless thank you all.

I'm also getting poor signal strength with Photon Q on AT&T. Comparing with signal strength reported by Galaxy Note and Captivate Glide in same locations and with same SIM, the Photon Q reports close to 10dB lower values. No idea how reliable any of these reports are, but fact is that in some spots the Samsungs get a signal and a connection, whereas the Photon gets nothing.

Yet Another Signal Issue

Hey everyone. So long story short, I took advantage of T-Mobile's offer to pay off my VZW contract, and purchased the Nexus 5. Now, from my extensive searches all over the internet, it is pretty apparent that this phone has a lot of signal issues. Mine, however, appears to be a bit different and I haven't really come across it yet. So this is what happens:
I have pretty good signal everywhere with T-Mobile. At home, however, it's not so great (but workable). Occasionally, I go into a spot where I lose signal. The problem is, that signal never comes back. Just today, I lost signal in my elevator. I went into the car, drove to a point where I ALWAYS have full LTE, and look at my phone: No Signal, Emergency calls only. I go into the phone status menu in the device settings, and according to the DBM, I have FULL signal (yet the top right corner indicates a little lack-of-signal triangle). The only way to "reconnect" to the network is to go to mobile network > network operators and to manually select T-Mobile after it searches for networks. Then, it reconnects to the network with full signal. Again, this isn't like the other network issues that people seem to be having, where they suddenly lose signal. My radio is fine. It transitions seamlessly between 3G and LTE. The problem, however, is that sometimes, after going into a low coverage area and losing signal, I can't get it back.
Has anybody ever had this issue? I don't think it's a hardware issue, because the phone is reporting that it is receiving signal in the status menu.

I have tmobile as well and I haven't had this problem yet. It comes out of no signal fine and usually pretty quick. Can you still make calls or does it say "mobile network not available". I would go to a tmobile store when you can and ask them. Don't call, those people don't know anything.

Thats really weird. I haven't heard that before either. I know this phone has a bunch of signal problems, but I haven't hear this as one of them. As I said, try going to a tmobile store. They might be able to help by giving you a new sim card or something. If that doesn't work, I would RMA the phone.
When you say "where I normally have a good LTE signal" what are you comparing that to? When you had vzw? Or another time with the same phone on tmo? Maybe tmo isn't good in your area and you're better off with vzw? Just a thought. I had vzw for 11 years and switched to tmo April 2013. Better than vzw in my area. My N5 has no signal issues that I'm aware of

I mean that, in that same exact area, when I manually reconnect to the T-Mobile network, I have full bars of blazing fast LTE. In that same exact spot, prior to manually reconnecting, the phone was telling me that I had no signal just seconds before. I'm referring to only T-Mobile, and only the Nexus 5.

Have you tried disabling LTE and just run with 3G? Not permanently, but for testing purposes.
Sounds odd.. when i lose signal completely its in a no coverage area... makes sense right but when i step into coverage
it will lock back onto the network (EDGE) after 20 seconds or so and 10 more seconds should lock into the data (LTE/HSPA)

The problem is that, as long as you have strong service and don't lose signal, the problem is impossible to replicate. That's probably what your service center saw. I downloaded an app today to help monitor how long it takes to regain signal. If the data adds up, I plan to use it.

The problem occurs even when my phone is standing still. I have it on my desk where it has a five bar reception 24/7. I never moved it at that time and it still failed on me. I even tried a different SIM with same results.
I have another question for everyone with the T-Mobile network. When I am at home, I have pretty weak signal. It is usually HSPA or, sometimes, HSPA+. However, when I try to switch to 2G in preferred network types, I cannot get any signal whatsoever. How is it possible that my phone can have 3G but cannot connect to 2G?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Signal Issue
I had the same issue. I have great LTE signal at home. When I get to work it's 3G. The phone transitions from LTE to 3G ok. When I go into the middle of the building I loose the signal completely. When I go back outside the phone never reacquires 3G. I was able to duplicate this several times.
I did a factory reset which didn't work. I called T-Mobile support. They were no help. I went into T-Mobile store and asked if they would swap out the SIM. Bingo.
New SIM card solved my problem.

RMA for weak LTE

I just wanted to chime in with my experience with poor LTE reception on the One, I'm in the SF Bay Area with usually solid AT&T LTE coverage just about everywhere I go. I submitted a RMA ticket for weak LTE reception on 7/18 and after a number of sporadic emails between support and myself, I've finally received what appears to be an answer to the weak LTE problem.
OnePlus support has stated this in their most recent email to me:
"We suspect that this is due to antenna design rather than a quality issue. But will RMA this to study your device....etc etc."
So, it does look like a design issue since I've seen this issue pop up from time to time on various forums. Perhaps they were slow to reply because they were actually researching/replicating the issue (asked where I was physically using the phone etc.). Luckily unlike the yellow banding issue, OnePlus is willing to look into THIS design characteristic.
Has anyone received a warranty replacement and noted any improvement in reception?
EDIT:
The problem I'm seeing is not related to how many 'bars' CM11s shows in relation to signal strength.
The weak LTE issue I'm referring to is when the phone refuses to maintain any LTE connection with an amplitude of less than -100dBm. Most other phones will hold on to a weak LTE signal better, the One is very quick to switch to HSPA+ in this situation. During these far too often transitions, my battery life is impacted and I've seen many missed SMS messages.

Can you tell me your signal strength in dBm? You can check by going to settings>about phone>status
Mine usually drops LTE once it gets down to around -103dBm. My Z1 and G2 will stay connected until about -106 to -108 dBm.
Yeah I know how to check signal strength. Mine sits at between -112dBm and -114dBm constantly.

If that's the case, my device is definitely faulty. But I'm also assuming you don't use LTE bands 4/17 in AUS so its not a direct reflection of radio performance between yours and mine. I got one more coming this weekend, guess a side by side comparison should settle it.
Thanks for the info!
No worries.

-88dBm is a lot stronger signal than what we're seeing.
"The right way to measure signal strength is in terms of power. The dBm range on a cell phone will vary from -121 to -51. These numbers are usually mapped to bars—on an iPhone, -121 is one bar, -76 and higher is five bars." - Ars Technica
I have a Chinese OPO. I bought it because it has all the bands I need to run it on Rogers Canada (My Carrier). But out of the box, this phone had major reception issues. I flashed various modems with no luck. The phone was nearly unusable at some places.
However, after I flashed the CM11 latest nighly, that seemed to fix my issue. The phone handles signal a lot better now and locks on to it. Where before it used to drop signal from LTE to edge randomly and signal used to go up and down randomly.
So try flashing the latest build of CM Nightly, maybe that will fix your issue.

You're forgetting that dBm is measured in negatives here, so -88dBm is high than -114dBm.

Thanks for finding that, confirmed I'm running the same baseband.
Well that's a real shame. I'm on the 25R update of CM11S and have that baseband. I was hoping there was another updated baseband on the CM11 nightly, the signal at my house is terrible.

Sounds like the July/Aug CM11S OTA might be our best chance for a fix at this point?

Yeah I think so. It's due any day now if you believe what they tell you.

One of the cons that 11S is a official ROM for a phone. There needs to be a lot of quality assurance before its pushed out as a OTA.
I still feel like the CM team should have applied several hotfixes before the big monthly OTA such as the Google Play Services fix. Also, I hope the next update enables VoLTE as TMobile VoLTE is nationwide now

No Incoming Calls! Help!

Hello All,
I got the Chinese OPO 16GB because it satisfied all the frequency requirements for my Carrier (Rogers Wireless, Canada).
I absolutely love the phone its an amazing device.
But I am having major issues when it comes to reception with this phone. I am coming from and iPhone 5S. This phone works very nicely with LTE and speeds are good and everything, but it has issues locking signal when it comes to 3G/HSPA. When I am indoors I get absolutely no 3G coverage at all... where I used to ger 2-3 bars with this phone thats impossible it completely loses coverage as soon as I step indoor somewhere. Just for kicks and giggles I experimented with this at the mall. I turned the phone settings to WCDMA only and managed to lock 5 bars on HSPA standing underneath a sunroof at the mall. As soon as I stepped in a covered area merely steps away from the sunroof I would lose coverage.
It is beyond me to understand how a phone can have such a sensitive antenna.
My main issue isn't 3G... Since I get LTE everywhere with this phone. But the problem is when someone is calling me the phone keeps looking for 3G signal to drop to but cant because it cant find 3G signal and all my incoming calls go to voicemail.
Anyone have any ideas? how I can fix this? or is anyone else going through the same thing I am?
Thanks in advance.
P.S I am running the latest CM Nightly.

I have been watching that thread closely but everyone on that thread claims that they had no 3G before flashing the modem and after they did... whereas I do get 3G/H+ sometimes but reception is horrendous.
Did you change your internal settings to LTE only? Via the dialer code?

No, I either keep it on GSM/WCDMA and LTE or GSM and LTE.
GSM and LTE works better than GSM/WCDMA.

Well at least you have a spare phone, I dont. I am stuck with this, depending on my luck I may or may not receive calls. I have searched countless forums... Tried Stock, Flashing Diff roms, and even a modem.
No Luck Whatsoever

I feel you bro, i missed a few very important calls myself. lets just hope it gets fixed soon in the next update(if at all it can be fixed by a software update) or ill just shout at my ATT rep. Hang in there
Okay! So I have narrowed down the issue... the issue is with UMTS signal, it is super super super weak when indoors or even under a shed for that matter...
So just to test it out, I went outside and stood around for a minute until I got 3G on my phone then ran Android Terminal Emulator with the Ping google.com command
I noticed that for as long as terminal was running my phone stayed connected to 3G with full bars on HSPA+ or HSPAP without any hickups.
However, as soon as I closed the terminal, **** went down the toilet again... I went from 16 ASU and 4-5 bars to 1 bar. Then within seconds to 0 bars and then no service all of a sudden.
If that helps anyone... I feel like its a software bug somewhere.
Any dev who can help... please help me.
Much appreciated.
I don't have 4g coverage in my area so I basically use 3g (HSDPA+) and I also noticed that the signal strength is not quite as good as other phones in the same area. And signal strength goes up and down all the time, from -80 dBm (full bars) to -107 dBm (no bars) and sometimes even switches to the 2g (EDGE). Also noticed that if the phone is downloading data signal strength is good, around -80 dBm. In idle signal strength goes down to the poor, around -101 dBm (one or no bars). I'm living in good coverage area. I did a test and compared signal strength with Note3. Note3 showed stable -83 dBm strength. So definitely it is not poor operator coverage but a problem with OnePlus radio modem. Interesting that on 2G everything is fine, signal is stable and in par with Note3.
Same thing here bro... So what I am trying to look for now is to force my phone to always stay connected to HSPA+ somehow.. because HSPA+ Signal seems to be a lot more stable and stronger but it drops back down to 3G which is really really weak as you know and then eventually disconnects itself from the network.
If you find anything, do let me know.
Thanks.
Here is a video of the demo of the issue.

Why not flash the US version of the ROM? (CM11S or OPO 4.4 AOSP)? that should also flash the modem and make it the same baseband version. The hardware is identical to the US version.

It's definitely the toilet. Going to the toilet means dropping at least one bar. Damn toilet.

has anyone found a working solution to this issue? when i put my phone on 2g only, there's no real issue, but if on 3g or lte , some phone calls go to voicemail.
Have to push this thread. First week my phone worked brilliantly, now no incoming calls, straigt to VM. Haven't changed since then any setting (rooter from begin and franco Kernel).... Any ideas? It's definitely the phone, because my old phone works great with the sim card. I get SMS and Internet is also working fine
I also have this problem on an intermittent basis. Occasionally incoming calls go straight to voicemail. I've tried the 38R, 44S, and now CM 11/28 modems. Same behavior on all. It's not very frequent, but worrisome, nonetheless. I've had it happen on stock 11s and Vanir 5.0.
Reboot always seems to fix the problem.
Anyone with the same problem, or able to provide some insight would be appreciated.

Canadian OPO Owners How Is Your Signal

I want to know how good is your signal strength, with data turned on and off. My One has terrible signal strength in the GTA, where there are plenty of Bell Towers. I don't know if this is a hardware issue, or a software issue with CM11s 33r. I would like to know your experiences.
Don't know about the GTA but in Montreal, i get full signal bars and full LTE outside. Inside it can go down to one bar.
Hi,
I'm with Rogers in montreal and the 3G is very good, similar to my old nexus 3, but LTE is low in most places and easy lost inside of buildings. Also it doesn't switch fast when lost LTE. Since I don't use data very much, I leave it on 3G and I put the LTE togle in the status bar to swith it if Ineed fast data (and if I got a signal of course). Try to put it on 3G if your reception is very low. I check on the web ant this problem is common with all LTE phones because there are less towers with LTE than 3G.

Hi - Using Rogers in the North York area I am pleasantly surprised how well the OPO picks up signal. My older iPhone 5 had less reception, though it may have at times shown more signal bars. The OPO has been good signal wise in the GTA for me on Rogers.

strange, on average I get 1 bar inside, 2 bars outside.
There's actually a Canadian OnePlus One thread already, check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/help/canadian-oneplus-owners-t2885996
I live in the GTA and Markham, always full bars of LTE downtown, but occassionally 2 bars LTE. I always have H+ wherever I go, but when I take the GO Train, occasionally I would be on GPRS (2G). In the University I am stuck on H+ but sometimes 1-2 bars LTE.
I don't get bad signal at all. 33R modem.

Rogers. Sure it can easily be normal. At home I sometimes only get 1-2 LTE bars.
the strange this is outside I can only get a max of 2 LTE bars....
When turning LTE off, I get great reception, but my HSPA speeds are terrible, like 4mbps

Chinese OPO or International OPO?
I ask because of the preloaded modem built into the phone. If you came with Chinese OPO, just flash the latest modem on your phone using fastboot a few times to make sure you wipe off the original ColorOS modem.
Works on my friend's OPO too, and he's on Rogers. He's got great signal now.

I ma using the international One Plus One. I am currently using CM11 nightlies. The thing is turning off LTE altogether and switching to a 3G network gives me great service. But when I switch to LTE, even with LTE turned off, my service is terrible.

Go into fastboot and flash the modems in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/ref-oneplus-one-modem-collection-t2858734
Try them out, look at the chart at the bottom to compare which ones you should try. Same colors mean you only need to try each color once. This does not go the same for 33R and CM11 M8. They have different CRC32's so treat them differently.

Thanks for the suggestion, but you think the modem is my issue? I treid flashing several already, including the 33r, 25r and Color OS. I am currently on the Cm11 nightlies, which have their own radio. Do you think I should RMA my device?

I don't think you should, modems aren't chips that easily go bad just like that.
You could also hack your modem if you want...

I will stay on the safe side, do not want to ruin my phone further. Will Test the CM nightly modem for a bit, and hopefully by then One Plus releases a new OTA. Really considering returning the phone.
By the way, how is your signal with LTE turned off, but in your mobile networks settings you are still on an LTE network
