[Q] I Have a Question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So, as the title states I have a question. There is a service out there that will downgrade your GS3 from 4.3 or 4.4.2 to 4.1.2 with an unlocked bootloader. So if someone has a service and has figured it out already then how come the devs here haven't made any progress? I mean don't get me wrong I love all the devs and very much appreciate all there hard work but how come we haven't figured it out yet? who knows maybe by posting this, one of the devs will look this up and realize that they know this person and they will work together to help out our community for free because I know im not paying 50 bucks for that! Thanks!

The service you are referring to (provided by mobiletechvideos.com) is not a simple software hack, but rather a full-scale hardware hack. That means taking your device apart and messing with the internal hardware. It involves taking your eMMC chip off the main board, reprogramming it, and soldering it back on. It is not DIY.

Well thank you very much for clearing that up for me. Now I feel like an a** for not doing my research before hand. But that is why I love this community and why it is one of the best ones. the devs here are so friendly and helpful. Like I said thank you so much and happy modding!

And once you have detected the software or app you want ask to the OP to get help. A donation to the developer or to XDA site is more welcome than ofering to pay.

True....we are a community built on labours of love, and it is better to donate to the site. My wife has dyslexia, but since she got into playing with PPCs and perusing this site, has become rather adept at modding AND reading. We all will be glad to help, just PM me.
After all, what is a community for?

I haven't forgot about you guys. Today we had a meeting with XDA owners via telephone. Were just getting everything ready before we make a huge announcement. I told you guys I'm NOT going to let you guys down. Just be a little patient.

I'm not sure there are a lot of expectations here to be let down. We know that in most cases you probably wouldn't be able to offer us beta, or even alpha firmware and software to develop with or on. RC firmware and software would be just as much out of the question so we're down to what is already out, or something that is leaked by people friendly to the development communities that take the chance of getting in to a lot of trouble. So I don't really know what you have to offer yet. I am curious to find out, though.
Dear john, you have sparked a lot of interest, we are drooling at the mouth do you have any gingerbread for us, or dare I speak of honeycomb? ;-)

"IF" this where to happen it would be a good thing for both samsung and xda for the simple fact that it would help us make better mods for the samsung community and would allow samsung to release things that are more open to modding and customizations that all of us around here love and enjoy making (or in my case learning to make)...hope all goes well with this.
I am a dubious person and do not have expectations as I am still uncertain as to your intentions and more importantly you identity.
But if all is as you say I would take back to the powers that be, many are obviously unhappy with having to run outdated software in the form of the OS on what was at the time of purchase cutting edge hardware.
Give us a option. Give us a way to open the phone up and flash a AOSP option. A more Nexus-ish approach would be fantastic.
The Mainstream will have what they require in a stock configuration and we the ones that know what the potential of the device is can help you in pushing it to its limits.
Well I'm trying to get my post count up so I can comment in development. Anywho kudos to samsung.
Thanks again John, I'm excited and look forward to hearing your announcement!

Honeycomb is made for tablets so I don't think that really helps us. And I highly doubt Samsung is going to release Gingerbread directly to XDA if at all.

maybe samsung will use us for testing and maybe some tweaking...that would give us a chance to develop on it before its officially released and we would just plain out have it early, cause if you give the devs here like 2 weeks with just about anything it will be fully modded and running to its full potential!!!
props to xda devs!!!

Hopefully their next approach works out better, they should have known better than to open a topic up to the entire forum
They should probably have moderator's from each device take questions from their users, then they could collaborate and get only the good questions answered. (and you wouldn't have to deal with trolls/flames/etc.)

I suppose the question *since we can't ask specifics* is....
What can you do to help us and or what tools can you provide to the DEVs to help us get every bit of Awesome out of the device that we can.
Put the ball in your court.
Glad THIS thread is still open...
(Does SamsungJohn know how forums work?!?)
ANYhoo... I'm a give 'em enough rope to hang themselves kinda guy and I've actually been recommending the Mesmerize & Fascinate to friends that need new phones based solely on the great XDA community and what they can get those phones to do using only a bread tie, three pennies, and a jar of Cheez Wiz. Kudos to the devs once again!
I had no delusions that Samsung was a great manufacturer... my TV and DVD/home theater unit have had their share of problems... and I was also aware of the OS update delays in other product lines before I got my phone so that wasn't a big surprise either. BUT, I got in on the free phone thing through USCC and (if I EVER get my $80 rebate) I'll still consider being a Mesmerize owner/user a WIN.
What I see here is a classic example of a company that has the OBVIOUS solution within their grasp and they are actively choosing to find an alternative to it that will provide them SHORT TERM monetary gains. They have set themselves up for failure and they have only themselves to blame. Here's a vocabulary lesson for SamsungJohn et al... crowdsourcing
Guys if you haven't read through it, that topic was closed by a moderator because it was an experiment that failed miserably. (because the general XDA population isn't very good at reading and following instruction, and it turned into a huge flamefest.)
John has been confirmed by several sources to be who he says he is (at least works for samsung) and is here working with the XDA administration to (in an organized way) swap feedback with the developing community (on all samsung products).
On a side note Supercurio has been in correspondence with Korean Samsung and has been also pushing for this very thing to happen, but from what I've read i'ts pure coincidence that John arrived when he did.
Anyway, sounds to me like we need to be patient as information IS coming as soon as they figure out the best way to go about this whole thing. This is how I've taken things from what I've read today, don't quote me....

In all fairness Crowdsourceing is what the whole AOSP is about. Android was and is developed to be Open Source. So if a company is reaching out to the community it can't be all bad.
I just think that for the most part a lot of us here are end users.
While I am sure that others like me want to, and strive to learn more, we simply will not be on a par with the current crop of DEVs as they progress as well.
I think the idea of a couple DEVs from each of the respective forums of the variations of the SGS platforms being in contact is a smart idea.
Dcows, Phidelt, and of course JT and many of the OPs in the Samsung Fascinate IRC channel would be obvious choices.
In fact a meeting of the minds in a channel of choice with only participants having voice would be nice as well.
I do understand and hope that SamsungJohn does know as well that most here are simply end users and just wanna know when we will get xxx or yyy ..
I will now go back to my corner get my Java Text out and see if I can learn, learn, learn....
If samsung really wants to get in good with the developement community, they would be wise to make it entirely official, and go to engadget or someone with a press release. If you want to gain our trust, give everyone the AOSP build.
Do I want sammy to be community-minded? Absolutely.
Am I going to trust one guy who says he works for our manufacturer? Well, let's get to the root of that. Do I trust the company who created out hardware? Not at all.

Yeah I frequent the irc with those guys and we're always willing to help people... I think a lot of people come to forums just to get help and information rather than to develop and theme and stuff like we do. It would probably be more beneficial for Samsungjohn to maybe set up a date on the irc and say like "I will be on from x time to y time" and then people can get on and ask questions and talk about things, and more of the power users who use the irc regularly will get a chance to maybe learn some stuff or help out Samsung.
It would also make it much easier to control, if things get out of hand then the OPs can simply kick or ban the culprits.

Bricked one phone.. Got replacement. Need Help

Okay so I had a G2x and tried rooting it and I think i did something wrong. With all these instructions ramble on about one thing and another hard for me to really understand all the correct steps.
So can I please have someone give me a hand with this? As in a step by step process of everything? This is my second G2X brand new from T-Mobile has the Gingerbread 2.3.3. So if anyone can actually tell me step by step and what files I am going to need so I don't brick this one because 300USD is getting expensive.
u payed for ur replacement? lol
use the one click flash nvidia tool, to flash the clockworkmod, you dont evne have to root it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG08Uc8pQT0
yeah I had to pay for a second one. GRRR T-Mo actually checks their phones with sprint if I bricked or something just dip it in water and send it in. They would never check to see if you rooted it. So anyways do I install Clockwork or only do the steps in the video with the nv flasher?
And whats the best rom? I really like the looks of MIUI sorta looks like my wifes iPhone.
i think you screwed yourself on this one... this phone is like virtually unbrickable, nvflash should be able to bring you out of any soft bricks you might run into and ive run into a fair share of them and never had a problem...
i would recommend you sift though the development section and read all of the tutorials and have a very good understanding of what you are doing instead of having someone spoonfeed you everything when you really dont know what you are doing... (im a high school math teacher and cannot stand it when students are just spoonfed information because in the end they really dont understand what they are doing)
start here though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Yeah, what he said. maybe you shouldn't be messing with your phone if you don't understand the implications.

Best thing I've ever read. It helps shine a light on why so many people almost daily are asking for help on how to do something when this forum is riddled with tutorials. I personally stopped helping months ago with any questions on how to root or flash or just anything that there are tutorials for. It just gets crazy redundant.

Then why even post in here? Don't be a ****. Even more frustrating than people who can't use a search feature are people too uptight and high-strung to help someone. Yeah, maybe the OP could have found the answer himself. But he's obviously been following a tutorial (likely in this very forum) that's not working for him (hence his replacement phone). The guy just needs two seconds of help from someone. In the amount of time it took me to copy/paste the following links, I could have torn him a new one thirty times over. But I'm not a ****. So, if you absolutely HAVE to post here, at least make it constructive. Incessant *****ing does no good for anyone.
To the OP:
Firstly, you'll need to flash CWM. This is super simple, given you're on a PC. If you're on Mac, things will get tricky (i.e. virtual Linux environment, headaches, etc).
Next, you can find an easy to follow rooting method here. It even has an unroot .zip option given you have to send your phone in again (will save you another $300 ).
And of course, you can PM me if you need any help. If these are the steps you have already followed, here's a YouTube video with some visuals. When I'm stuck on something, that usually helps me a lot.

Uhhhh... i really dont understand how i was being a ****... I simply stated that he should have a holistic understanding of what hes doing before he starts tinkering because the figure it out as you go method can lead to a 300 dollar paper weight. Not to mention I pointed him in the right direction to start....
All I did was give a bit of advice that I felt was in his best interest and then sent him on his way...
If you think what I originally posted was flaming then you clearly have never seen me tear somebody a new one lol
Dont worry man

They are being difficult. What they realize is that the OP has already stated that he's bricked one device because he cannot follow directions. He obviously does not know what he's doing, and has problems following instructions because, as he put it..they go on and on... In the end even if he successfully roots his phone, he may wind up causing himself problems by having access to system files because it's obvious he doesn't really know what he's doing. Everyone shouldn't root. If you cannot follow the simple instructions to root without "bricking" a device, and you cannot follow simple instructions to bring the device back to an operational state, then perhaps rooting is not for you (OP). It just sounds like he is going to cause himself even more problems.

I can't believe no one has said this yet.
Most phones have water sensors, so dipping it in water would just void the warranty. Sorry if you were joking. But as many have said, it's pretty easy to flash the phone back to normal so the TMobile doesn't know it's been hacked. Did you ask here first?
I am thankful for all the responses. Sorry if I caused grief and headache to anyone. I was finally able to get my phone rooted giving the information that someone provided to me on here. I sent him a PM to personally thank him.
By all means I should probably be *****ed at if I don't follow instructions very well. I have always considered myself a visual learner. If I don't have hands on and able to see it done, it really complicates things for me. I guess you can call it a disability.
Anyways I have come from a long line to HTC which I can say is way different in rooting then these phones. I root them to begin with to get rid of all the stupid software T-Mobile places in my phone and to normally switch to CM7 which I have found out is giving me problems which I am currently trying to figure out.
So please negative comments and put downs are always accepted it comes with the questions. But I don't want to sound like an ass or anything when I say this because I mean it in the upmost respect to everyone, but isn't this a forum? A community forum?
Someone once had to show you, all I did was ask for the same help. And this whole GSM network ways of doing things is different from my typical Sprint CDMA network that I am used to. Everything was pretty much the same when it came to that.
Again please I AM VERY SORRY truly if I caused any problems. Please don't be upset at me. Thanks.
I don't think anyone is upset with you. We're all here to contribute and help. Have fun with your rooted G2X

Do not sweat the whiners. Here is the way I look at it... It is a forum for developers. I can not develop crap, so I try to do my part by being helpful when I can. Everyone here was brand new at one point. Make sure you do your part by reading as much as you can. If you still have questions/issues, send me a PM.
Why does every noob question get followed up with a bunch bullshizz. We were all noobs at one point, I remember when my Huawei ascend scared me. Nothing is worse than bricking your phone and being upset than a bunch of know it all asses being pricks. Is the g2x forum the only one full of d-ckheads? I've never heard so much whining and holier than thou bs. I'm surprised we have any devs, ungrateful bunch of *****es. Wah, nvidia never, wah, everyone else has ics, wah, that noob asked a question, wah, I suck. I love my g2x, it's a typical musclecar, way over powered and finicky as hell. The g2x is not a beginners device, this is for big boys and girls. I wonder what the whiners would do if they owned a ferrari? Newsflash, they break down, a lot! I remember when xda was where you went for help and support, now I come here to be entertained by the ignorance of the know it alls. Go ahead, blast me, I'm a writer for an Android website and I'll make it painful. OK, then, how bout all these new roms and updates? It's like the g2x is reborn. Hey, wait a minute, I thought the g2x was a useless, unsupported piece of ka ka? Frickin morons!

Well first I am glad you were able to fix the phone however I understand knowledgeable people get frustrated because this phone is simple to root. With a phone that has been out this long there is no reason anyone can not find out what to do on there own.
There are so many YouTube videos and forums like this. You are not the second person to too your phone or to brick it so why create a new post looking for help when you can simply Google it. I know your lazy and expect someone else to do your work for you.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...9l19l0l3l3l0l1535l5020l1.0.3.0.2.2.1.0.1l10l0
See plenty of info on the subject I am sure one of these other people have been helped.
This is why devs are tired of these questions they have been answered over and over. You may find this mean to say but you most likely found this forum by using Google so use it to fix your phone. Stop wasting peoples time by being lazy and use your head.

AOSP ICS for the samsung galaxy s 4g

Literally every other phone has some kind of beta ICS support. I've never developed a rom but i've found myself with some free time i don't want to spend studying for my ccna and would like to devote it to getting an aosp rom semi working. even if it's only the most basic of roms then someone more experienced won't have to start from scratch.
tl;dr I'm looking into making a sgs4g ics aosp rom and would love any tips/advice instructions that people have to offer.

trust me i've been reading i set up my linux box and have been trying to find any info about creating an ICS rom but all i've been finding is stuff for gingerbread. btw this is strictly in my freetime and i'll need to wait till i buy another phone before i start flashing willy nilly on my baby lol so yea it's gonna be a while.
I don't think it was on XDA -- but Android Forums if I'm not mistaken.
There was a team who were making pretty good progress on it but unfortunately they had to drop development on it.
It was a problem of devoting time and bricked devices. If memory serves me correctly. Googling around rather than searching XDA will help you find the thread I was talking about. Because I sure can't. Might've been on Rootz too, really not sure.
I'm pretty sure FB was working on it. That or shutting up all the kiddies demanding more progress. One of those two.

Any idea what the name of the team that was working on it might have been?
testing
ok so it's unlikely that i'll be able to afford a new phone for a while and i'm not too excited to be testing this on my phone so my question is will anyone be willing to try out my concoctions on their device? i'm asking for people with experience recovering their devices here. i really don't want any "My phone is ruined" situations here. i'm looking for testing and feedback as i'm working on a kernel first the goal will be to get the phone to boot with ics.
With only 4 posts you're going to have to prove to others that you're legitimate before they want to try out your releases.
How exactly do i go about proving myself to the xda community?
I mean the people who matter and can help with this little project.
Get a rom out... Hahaha.
ultimately if you dont have the courage to flash it to your own device dont expect others to feel really well about flashing it for you.... (unless your 100 percent sure it wont hard brick them)..
It's not really a matter of confidence it's that i need my phone for work/school. Once i get another i wouldn't mind flashing it. I wouldn't ask someone to flash something that would brick their devices.

I use my primary phone for test flashing. . If you're gonna wait for another phone then don't start deving until you get that phone, or rather don't release your dev work until you're sure it works.

How badly have you ever messed up your device lol?
nothing more than a softbrick when I haven't messed with bootloaders.
Don't you have the unbrickable mod FB? That is an option.

I don't. I just like to think I know what I'm doing half the time. Haha. Trust me, if you stay away from bootloaders it's practically impossible to hard brick.
ICS
@andon21
I saw a link where Team Acid was working on ICS - don't have it off hand
Thats another question will i need to make my own bootloader?

[Q] 4.3 downgrade??

I was going through the 4.3 update discussion thread and came across twitter links to a possible downgrade from 4.3 to 4,1,2. Anyone have any new information on this? Is this true, and if so how can you do this.

heres the tweet
Moved to Q&A.
Let's not be fooled here one of two things are happening. Either it is a trick to get followers or they mistakenly "downgraded" a 4.3 rom that already had the insecure boot loader and are trying to figure out why it won't work again. There is no reason why the haven't put up the links already. I'm betting its a trick but who knows? Deep down inside I hope they figured something out.

MobileTechVideos is a very renown website and Josh Groce is a very respected developer. He wouldn't try to "trick" anyone to believe something like this isn't true. Also, there is a reason he wouldn't put up any links because this wouldn't be something that can be done on the software level. It's most likely a hardware mod and requires JTAG.
Could he have been mistaken and jumped the gun on this announcement? Possibly. However it wouldn't be something as simple as not realizing the phone already had an insecure bootloader. He knows what he is doing.
To get a taste of the stuff he does check out some of his youtube videos. Here's an example:

I retract my last post. I took a look down in his Facebook posts and he accidentally found a way to downgrade. So call me crazy but you don't accidentally stumble across a fix like this if it requires a hardware mod and I thought jtag was proven to not work because of the efuse or qfuse or whatever its called. From the "feel" of his post he did a repair he has done before that works with both the 4.1.2 and 4.3 boot loader and didn't realize he mixed the two up until the customer told him he was on 4.3 before sending it in. I'll be the first to admit I know nothing about bootloaders and there operation. Perhaps he bypased the fuse by removing and programing the chip directly and that is his normal repair operation instead of jtag and that is why it worked? No matter what it is I am happy he figured it out and hope he gets a lot of business out of it. Sorry for my ramble I probably didn't need to post all of that but its done and I don't feel like deleting it.
This is really exciting news, but I hope he updates soon. If he is wrong, I would not be mad but would rather know sooner than later. Right now, it's just a big tease

He did it three times on three different phones so I'm sure he is correct.
