Not sure if hardware or software issue. Have you tried to do factory reset?
It the problem persists, then you might want to RMA your Nexus 5.

Nexus S randomly initiates Google Search

I have a stock unrooted i9020A running the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 OTA. I did a factory reset after the OTA came in and reinstalled everything from scratch.
Once or twice per day, the phone will just initiate Google Search (as if I had pressed the little magnifying glass capacitive button) and will repeatedly try to enter Google search even as I am repeatedly hitting the back button to exit Google search. The magnifying glass capacitive button will sometimes blink as this is happening.
It happens when I am using the phone, but I am 100% certain I have not come anywhere close to touching the magnifying glass button, so I know I am not causing it to do this.
It's pretty annoying because the phone basically becomes unusable for 30-60 seconds as it repeatedly attempts to enter Google search and I am fighting with it not to.
Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions?
Thanks.
This has happened to me! On my first NS, my back button would press itself, but it would flash as if I were pressing it. Unfortunately, I never found a solution as a few days later, the screen died, and I got my whole phone replaced as it was still under warranty.

No problem, also keep in mind the capacitive buttons work with heat (I think), this may have something to do with the problem. But as I said, I'm not really sure. Good luck

I've been running into this problem as well recently and from the looks of things people experienced this way back to the gingerbread days. I've checked Google forums and people were plagued with this search firing on its own. It is reported by some that when the 3G is low it opens on its own and I can attest to that, that it is happening to me when my 3G it's low.
I had this problem a long time ago and I fixed it by flashing a different radio.
The one that worked for me was UCKF1-GRK39F (this is for my device i9020a). If you plan to change your radio, make sure you flash the correct one for your device.
I have this problem. Radios, ROMs, Kernels, nothing seems to cause or fix it. One thing I would do is lock it then wipe the screen entirely (thinking maybe my finger grease is causing it).. Come to think of it, I've also always had a screen protector on it as well, so that might have something to do with it.
The best solution I've found for mine is to disable the Search button in CM10.

It could be the "sleep of death" that has plagued various versions of Android. I experienced it after upgrading to JB 4.1.2, I had a number of episodes until I determined that a pre-update installed app (Sipdroid) was the culprit triggering the problem and uninstalled it. When my note went into the sleep of death, a long power button hold didn't turn it back on. After googling I found the solution to re-power my note--keep a finger on the touch screen while depressing the power button. Be careful when downloading apps. Download individually and test to make sure*it doesn' t introduce problems. Also keep things backed up so you can do a system restore.
I don't believe it was SOD as the tablet wouldn't be replaced for that. They'd just take back and reflash the OS... This sounds like a hardware fault...
I was downloading asphalt 7 heat from play store
It was almost 50 % download
don't khow what happen then...

I was afraid my tablet's entry into SOD was a hardware failure because holding down the power button did nothing. It was only when using a suggestion in a Samsung forum (found through Google) to keep a finger on the touch screen while pressing the power button that I was able to get my Note to reboot. I've not had a SOD incident since deleting Sipdroid, but the several episodes of SOD that I had before finding the offending app required that I keep a finger on the touch screen while pressing the power button, otherwise the tablet wouldn't reboot but looked dead.
I m just worried that it could be happen to next tab.
In india there is a policy from sansung that if your device has any prob it will be replaced with in 7 days they will not repaire it

Use a backup program so you can reinstall your apps and settings on a new tablet. Be careful what apps you install; compatibility issues between an app and your tablet's version of Android can cause significant stability issues. Devices in SOD look dead. A long press of the power button on a Samsung tablet in SOD will sometimes work to get the device to reboot, but not always. Some tablets in SOD can only be rebooted by keeping a finger on the touch screen while pressing the power button. Good luck.
Well thanks guys for your suggestions

Nexus 5 brick from first setup?

Today I got my nexus 5, but unfortunately I have a lot of problems. After entering my Google account information and walk away for 5 minutes, my phone was locked. When I came back, I wanted to unlock my phone. My phone failed, and the screen remained black. I tried to play, what with the buttons, but the screen remained black. I received some weird stripes, and the phone was very hot. After a while the phone restarts, and came back in android. Then I got an update to 4.4.2, after restarting everything seemed to work well. After an hour I got the same problems again, phone failed, and the screen remained black and locked. I get a message about QHUSB_BULK driver is not installed, and MTP failed.
Phone is factory and nothing is installed, it was the first setup.
So now I'm still with a black screen and locked phone
First try a reset looks like a screen issue though

How to reset, I cant shutdown the phone, the screen is black and I see no shutdown button.
Make sure it's charged. Press and hold the power button (for 15 seconds or so). But it sounds like you may need to RMA it. I'd be contacting Google if I were you.

Nexus 5 just boot if i press screen very fast!!

Hi, my nexus almost 5 months after i bought it, it got a strange problem, it just "boot" if i tap the screen repeatedly times fast (dont need to be strong, just fast)..
look this video i recorded:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1kZ718MVac&feature=youtu.be
i repeat, its not strong, just fast =(
if i hold power up and power down it enter in recovery but i cant do nothing, because it in 1 second reboot again =/
It's sounds like hardware failure for me. But have it ever been got wet or fallen down? Are you using stock rom/kernel or custom one(s)? Have you tried to make a full wipe in the recovery?
Not that i remember, i Dropped it sometimes, but this problem started "without reason"
Its stock and i tried the fullwipe, but now its impossible sincr i cant stay in cwm more than 1 or 2 seconds
Maybe i have chance that google can fix it? I sent it to a store to see if was something about the powe button, they said no and they cant fix the problem since they dont know and have fix accessories for it
Try to use ADB to wipe the partitions then flash stock with Fastboot?

[Q] Nexus 5 Rebooting By itself

Hi everyone...
I hope you will understand my problem because i'm getting crazy here...
So I have a Nexus 5 on CM12 official right now, but my problem already occurred on 5.0 Lollipop stock and unroot...
So here is the problem...
The problem can occurred either when i'm using the phone or when its locked.
1) When I use it, the power menu pops up by itself (just like if i was pressing the power button, but i'm not) and it restarts by itself... Then it boots up again, and does that over and over again... If i try to go away when the power menu pops up, it works for 2 sec and then the power menu comes back over and over...
2) If it's locked, either it turn the screen on and then does the same thing than above, or it just restarts the damn thing without anything on the screen...
I don't know if it's clear enough... But i'm getting really angry at this... So if you can't help me, i guess i will to go ahead and by the Nexus 6...
thank you all for your help !
You're power button is stuck. You need to seek service, or Google how to fix/replace it yourself.
Good luck!
No it's not...
I can still use it when i want it... And it doesnt happen all the time... It could be good for 2 days, and then do it again...
Plus, it's like the phone is pressing the screen it self... Since its not because you press the power button that it re starts...

I have to agree with darth, sounds like a power button to me too. You said it happens on stock as well as custom roms so it's sounds like hardware not software.
Hey, @Darth when did you become a forum moderator? Congrats man!

I still bet then that it's a wonky power button. It may not act up all the time.
Flash a clean stock image or even another rom. If it's the same, it's the button. Or another hardware issue anyway.
It's the power button. It's a common issue with the N5.
