Nexus S randomly initiates Google Search - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock unrooted i9020A running the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 OTA. I did a factory reset after the OTA came in and reinstalled everything from scratch.
Once or twice per day, the phone will just initiate Google Search (as if I had pressed the little magnifying glass capacitive button) and will repeatedly try to enter Google search even as I am repeatedly hitting the back button to exit Google search. The magnifying glass capacitive button will sometimes blink as this is happening.
It happens when I am using the phone, but I am 100% certain I have not come anywhere close to touching the magnifying glass button, so I know I am not causing it to do this.
It's pretty annoying because the phone basically becomes unusable for 30-60 seconds as it repeatedly attempts to enter Google search and I am fighting with it not to.
Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions?
Thanks.

This has happened to me! On my first NS, my back button would press itself, but it would flash as if I were pressing it. Unfortunately, I never found a solution as a few days later, the screen died, and I got my whole phone replaced as it was still under warranty.

Hmm thanks for the info. Guess I might have to return it.

No problem, also keep in mind the capacitive buttons work with heat (I think), this may have something to do with the problem. But as I said, I'm not really sure. Good luck

I've been running into this problem as well recently and from the looks of things people experienced this way back to the gingerbread days. I've checked Google forums and people were plagued with this search firing on its own. It is reported by some that when the 3G is low it opens on its own and I can attest to that, that it is happening to me when my 3G it's low.

I had this problem a long time ago and I fixed it by flashing a different radio.
The one that worked for me was UCKF1-GRK39F (this is for my device i9020a). If you plan to change your radio, make sure you flash the correct one for your device.

I have this problem. Radios, ROMs, Kernels, nothing seems to cause or fix it. One thing I would do is lock it then wipe the screen entirely (thinking maybe my finger grease is causing it).. Come to think of it, I've also always had a screen protector on it as well, so that might have something to do with it.
The best solution I've found for mine is to disable the Search button in CM10.

Odd problem

Okay for a good month and a half I have been having an odd problem. Sometimes randomly my phone will start glitching and viberating randomly like I'm pressing the soft buttons below the sreen and sometimes that menu comes up like I pressed the menu button. Not the launcher. Ans also I can be in gallery and select a photo and it will viberate like I hit the back button and it will go back and I have to select it a few times before it stops. What could it be? It even done it on froyo
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
That happens to me every once in a while, the whole system will just hang and the menu will come up or the recent apps thing will come up multiple times and the phone will vibrate, then it just goes back to normal.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Yea. What's causing it

Could be a bad flash, or some app has created a conflict, seems to me I read there are a couple of apps that caused this. You could just reflash a different rom, see if that fixes it.

once every few days why? I think its hardware not software. cause No matter what rom I have had even 2.2 and stock it still does it

From my experience you can get some oddities such as this as a result of a bad flash (which re flashing would correct as stated above) so I'd say your assumption is probably correct and your problem may be with the hardware.
I don't want to ask the obvious question but no one has. Have you dropped it any? Or has it been exposed to any kind of water. I had a phone freak-out on me when usb port got a little wet from some rain.
Just when you think you have it idiot proof, they come out with a better idiot.
not been wet and its not a bad flash. Right now I'm trying out froyo again and it done it again last night. I'm a uscellular agent. And I have yet to have anyone else come I. With the same problem

I believe this happens on an undervolted kernel un areas of extremely low signal. Recently, it seems to be happening on any kernel. I hope this get's addressed in our real froyo release.

OK my phone stopped for a few days I haven't had a case on it. Then today I pit my case back on it and it started doing it earlier for the first time in days. The case doesn't over the front of the phone at all

Yea, that sounds like it may be the case :s I've had it happen a couple times, but I thought it might just be like my fingerprint is over the button and keeps presseing it. I just wipe my finger over the bottom of the phone and it stops. Don't know if its the same thing.

I think you are right I've had the same issue and if youlook at the soft keys when it happens you'll see that one of the buttons thinks it's being pressed I think it's just a hardware issue cause like you said when you run your finger over the keys it stops.
Also, similar problem every once in a while when I'm trying to swype during a swype it acts as if my finger lost contact with the screen but I definitely didn't lift my finger abd it happens several times in a row until I lock the screen turning the touch screen off it seems to reset the touch sensors.

or it's a ghost, woooooooo!
I've experienced this issue before, although very rarely. Every time it has been the menu button and it always seemed to be in colder weather. I use a thin screen protector I picked up at a USCC store. Happens even more rare with EA11 leak however my screen brightness changes (occasionally) when I end phone calls and am in the middle of an app

Keyboard/screen acting funny.

I have a strange problem. Occasionally my phone will refuse to let me type a letter. It generally happens towards the bottom right of the screen. However that isn't always the case. For instance I wanted to press the letter N today but it refused to let me. It would press every key around it but it wouldn't press N unless I tried multiple times. I have a screen protector on if that makes a difference. It really is annoying. Is my screen possibly defective?

Sometimes this happens to me when gunk and dirt build up on the screen. Usually I just take my shirt and wipe it off real good and it works like it's supposed to.

Could also be something under the screen protector messing with the capacitance. Maybe a small air bubble that gets pushed out of the way when you repeatedly try tapping there. Just a thought. If it's not a hassle, I would try using the thing for a day sans protector and see if the issue replicates. If anything. it will eliminate the screen protector as a possible source of the problem. I'd gather, if you aren't rooted and running a custom ROM and the problem still exists in the absence of a screen protector, it is a manufacturing defect.

I am having the same problem and have had little gremlins like this come up. My phone is rooted by the way so if it is a manufacturing defect then I guess I am up the creek (voided warranty). It is annoying to say the least my t, y g h and v and b keys react as if they were not on the keyboard at all. Luckily the word recognition helps out but its frustrating. I have had more problems with this android phone than I ever had with my windows HD2. I miss that phone...no worries ever.
I would really advise you to exchange your phone for a new one if you are having problems with the touch screen this early on. Manufacturing defects like that don't go away and can only get worse. You can still return/exchange your phone if you are rooted, you just have to return it to stock before you do so.
This has been happening to myself and several others, and there have been a few touchscreen problem-related threads on here and other forums. the letters I can't type are fairly random but it usually seems to be t, s, and some vowels. it's either a software or hardware issue, since it is completely random and the problem fixes itself when you begin typing another word.
you can also try pressing the letter with your whole finger instead of the tip. it seems to work more often than pressing the letter 20 times before you flip out.
Anyone with this problem, is the touchscreen ever not responsive with anything else?

I thought about exchanging it but after reading all the issues other people have with replacement phones (or their first, even), I'm not sure I want to take the chance especially if it's a software issue.
Happens to me to, I am rooted and running a custom rom. It's a problem with the HTC keyboard. If it happens just hit the back button then bring the keyboard back up. Or install a new keyboard from the market like Better Keyboard.

Capacitive Buttons Glitch

Hey guys,
So I just bought a 2month used Infuse 4G originally locked to AT&T.
I've been noticing some issues and will try to explain it as clear as I can. Supposedly the person I bought it from said it was an OS issue...Hope you all can shed some light!
So pretend you're using your lovely android Infuse 4G and you're texting. All of a sudden you find yourself at the home screen, interrupted from your messaging. A couple of "huh's?" and "...wtf"'s you resume re-typing your text message.
Later you're on the highway driving to a new joint. The GPS signal has finally locked and you're cruising. All of a sudden, your GPS asks you if you want to end navigation. You look at your phone as if its a zombie and you quickly tap the 'cancel' option. Moments later, you notice the phone is back at the home screen and Google maps navigation is running in the background. You bring it back up. A few minutes later, the menus at the bottom come up. You tap the screen to make it go away and keep driving. This happens many more times while you drive even though you've already taken off the phone case.
So it seems like a ghost is touching the capacitive buttons. Not just one of those, ALL of them (Menus, home, search, back) while using the phone. It's not very frequent, but its enough to be aggravating.
Please advise, thanks!
Is there a case or screen protector on the phone? if so try removing and see if the problem persists

It's not an O/S issue .... well, it may be on YOUR device but not a general issue. If you do an Odin full restore to stock and still have the problem you now know why the guy sold it after 2 months.

None taken! I've actually left the phone w.o a case on a table. Its pretty scary to see your phone randomly show the menu from the home screen as if you pressed the button and then close that menu itself as if you were to press the back button...

Not sure what an Odin full restore is, but i'll look into it and give it a shot. Not surprisingly, my Infuse 4G is also among the few that have a GPS signal issue. The phone locks after 30 mins if Im lucky...
I didn't pay $434 for a phone that doesnt work properly/involves tweaking just to make simple features work...*sigh*

Touch input stops responding

Looks like I have been having nothing but problems lately.
First I was having the problem with the screen going all black (not off) where I had to press power button twice to get back to work.
Now I am getting this random locking of touch input until I press the power button twice.
Here is a video I just recorded of the monitor locking up and not reacting to touch input correctly.
Should I return this to Samsung? I don't have many days left on this refurbished warranty? Or could this just be a an OS glitch?
I did load a custom rom on here: Android Revolution HD 5.1
Should I just flash back to stock and root it and see if the problems occur?
Is anyone getting these?

No idea what's causing that but if you were going to take it back under warranty you would have to be using stock rom not custom anyway. So I would start with that and see if it's the rom causing the issue and if it's not and you've flashed back to stock rom then you may as well take it back under warranty.
Man I recently had this problem when I was tinkering with my note, but a reset fixed my problem. I have heard that this type of thing can happen if you flash the wrong recovery. Not saying thats the case, but more my two cents

Happens to me alot as well and mine aren't even rooted. It's usually when using LectureNotes, but maybe that's because it's the only app I really use the SPen with for longer periods of time. However, for me as for you the solution is just to quickly press the power button once and since it doesn't really appear that often that's fine by me.

Power button magically stopped working

Out of nowhere my power button magically no longer works. Kind of a huge deal since I use my phone for work a TON. At first I thought it was the ROM but then I rebooted into recovery and discovered it doesn't work in there either...... but by some sort of miracle though my phone magically boots itself up when I swap batteries in it....

You can get an app called button savior from Google play that allows you to create on screen keys to turn off your screen.
Various xposed modules allow you to remap your physical keys. If you don't know about the xposed framework I highly suggest looking into it.
Furthermore I believe some custom roms have key mapping built in.

My power button just started malfunctioning too. I'm on Odin barebones 4.1.2 stock and the problem persists.
It sounds like a lot of people are getting this problem. If you use that knowledge to your advantage, I've heard people convince Samsung it's a manufacturing problem and got it repaired outside of Warranty. The power button itself is sautered onto the motherboard, so unless you really trust a mobile repair company, best option is work directly with Samsung.
That being said, I'm going to look for an Xposed Framework module that can remap the power button.

I did replace the glass myself a couple months ago and it's been working fine until about a week ago. Was wondering if that had anything to do with it.
Interesting to see I'm not the only one having issues.
Kind of timely now that the S5 is coming out this week.

This is happening to a lot of people. I'm sure the s4 will start having this problem followed by the s5 after a year and some months. Im done with samsung phones until they start using different parts. Actually thinking about the next nexus phone and hack a msata drive into it with a custom vacume formed case. The only reason I haven't owned one is because of the storage limitation. I think a 200+ gigabyte msata strapped to the back would fix that problem.

Hey guys, mine originally starting messing up on Saturday, and then Sat night and all day Sun is was fine, and now it is doing it again. I even installed a new rom and it is still doing it so now I am convinced it is purely physical and not rom-related. What are you guys going to do?
I have the Wireless Phone Protection for my phone and am thinking about using that to my advantage to get a new device....question is I've never done it before. If I say I have a physical problem with my phone then won't Verizon want it returned? That will make me have to unroot it and bring it back to out of box state which is a big headache. What if I just say I lost it or it got stolen? Am I better off going that route?
EDIT: Also forgot to mention that along with these power button issues my S3 also will not reboot on its own. If I select Reboot (be it from the power button menu, notification pulldown, etc) it will just shut off and not reboot.....but if I yank the battery and put it back in it will then reboot to recovery. Same deal if I do a normal reboot, haven to yank and replace battery. You guys having these issues too?
So a couple of days ago my power button started acting wonkie as well. I would push it and it basically acted sticky. I would push once but it would register twice or as a long press. Either turning the screen on and off or bring up the reboot menu. So I did the xposed button remapping. Worked pretty well, but if I restarted the phone it would do a weird haptic feedback thing every couple of seconds before finally booting up.
So I wasn't satisfied with just living with it being a hardware issue. So I downloaded latest cleanrom to flash from cm11. I rebooted recovery and now it just vibrates every couple of seconds. Would not make it to twrp. It will get to cm Samsung boot screen but then just goes back to vibrating black screen. I took out battery and popped out power button but same results.
Any suggestions? Think power button can be fixed by repair shop or is it time to go back to my trusty droid incredible until I can upgrade.
