I have been trying to figure this out for the past 4.5 hours. I have searched numerous forums but cannot figure out what i am doing wrong. I am using OSX and thought that might be the source but this is my second HTC One (M8) and I had no problem with the first one.
I have also tried this on a Windows 7 computer and get the same results... as follows, i only put the end after you except the firewater exploit with a "Yes".
!!If firewater hangs for more than 2 minutes or device enters qhusb mode, hold power for 60 seconds !!

has anyone else had an issue with this? Im wondering if the "HTC Sync Manager" that is on the phone is screwing up the process. because im using the WeakSause Temproot and When I'm in the shell waiting for root so i can enter "su" the HTC Sync Manager pops up and knocks me out of the Shell.
Please help this is driving me nuts and is ruining my weekend!

If you're on a Mac you can just uninstall HTC sync manager. Don't worry about the drivers.

I understand that. I'm talking about the window that pops up when u plug the phone into the computer. It pops a window up for u to install HTC sync. I think it's inturupting the shell commands since root takes 30+ sec for me to get su du to the delay in the weaksause exploit

I did uninstall sync. From what I'm reading I think the updated boot loader might be the issue? That is according to other posts. I'm not sure.
It seems like if this is the case the sunshine s-off method is the only choice I have I just want to make triple sure before I invest $25
Its because firewater no longer works, you have to use the sunshine app now to get s-off. And sunshine is not a donation type of deal, you have to fork over $25 up front if you want s-off and that is $25 per phone. The saying goes nothing is for free anymore, unless you count the polluted air lol. Have to give them credit though as they know they have you over a barrel and they really thought this one through.

Yeah supposedly the exploit for firewater no longer works and it says that when you try to use firewater and it fails. I had it work on the newest software a couple weeks ago, but now it wouldnt work on another verizon m8 I tried for a friend. For all we know the people that made firewater joined in with the team that made sunshine and both share the $25 per device fee. If you think about it that fee probably really adds up to some serious cash. Or for all we know its all done by htc and they are the ones charging the $25 fee as a way to get more money lol, but then they would probably do that on the other models of m8 also, unless sprint, at&t & tmobile requested that htcdev be able to unlock their customers devices. No matter how you look at it someone is making some good money from sunshine.

Yeah so I"am really curious to know if the firewater has been changed at all including the download to rule out this being done deliberately, as firewater worked for me 2 weeks ago on the same new verizon software and now all of a sudden firewater no longer works ? Makes you wonder doesnt it ?
My Firewater file's MD5 is f63ac6f73bf369cfcc5b1c046221fabf and that worked for me on my second try.
I've been following this Firewater vs SunShine S-Off thing, and while I generally support the idea of a fee for a guaranteed S-Off, I think it's a tad unreasonable that they want $25 per device. I mean, how many people are gonna need it for more than one? You got the one, and if it works like it says, what's the other one? Your next phone? That's not gonna be a ton of people. And for those it is, so what? They paid. So many apps are per user for however many devices; you'd think a more expensive one would have looser, not more restrictive licensing.
But I also understand where the devs are coming from. They bricked a bunch of phones to get us this exploit, and if you got the One M8 for $200 or less (I got it for far less) and you saved hundreds by not buying it unlocked or the GPE model, $25 for S-Off ain't a bad deal.
I'm actually surprised custom ROMs don't cost money. It's a great thing what our developers here, and elsewhere, do for our devices. Of course if you pay for a ROM you want it to work flawlessly. How would y'all feel about an Android custom firmware ecosystem where you paid for (or subscribed annually to) your ROM of choice, got updates via email, good one on one support, and with that money, the developers were able to... I don't know... do more somehow? If the prices were fair I'd like to see developers get paid more.
So, I'm not surprised to see an exploit have a fee. It does seem high and the license restrictive. But I think, if it's a sure thing, it's not a step in the wrong direction.

Charging for roms is not allowed here. The whole spirit of Android is open source and sharing. Charging for roms wouldn't be great for the community for a lot of reasons. Services such as s-off I can understand because we're saving a ton of money not getting a developer edition phone. $25 isn't unreasonable.
Main reason why we love android so much is because of the spirit of open source and sharing. Imagine if the big aosp rom names, such as cm and aokp start charging to use their roms. The countless of other custom roms that use their base as a source would be unable to use it. All the great development and features we get wouldn't be pushed by different rom developers because each would be building completely from source.
Trust me, everyone charging for a rom is exactly what we all don't want. Just donate when you can, no rom developer is looking to become rich anyway. Just give what you can so they can get something for their hobby and obvious talents. They appreciate anything you can give.

I agree with you on most, but usually any bricked phones at the beginning can usually be unbricked so I cant imagine there really being many if any m8's that were not able to be fixed and sold off after at almost break even on the phones used, as usually new phones the value stays pretty high especially when its the best smartphone on the market like the m8 is and many months later its still on top.
It works still someone posted yesterday they just got it working an just got there phone...he said he used superuser instead of SuperSU.

I can confirm what @Tigerstown stated. I had 2 M8's on the new software and firewater worked just fine on both. The red M8 took a second try though.

If firewater says "no amount of retrying can fix this" then firewater simply isn't going to work. If it fails while chugging and just doesn't work, but doesn't display that error message, then it's a different story.
It all depends on what the internals of the phone are, but people who get that "whelp, that sucks" message won't get a different result running it multiple times. Maybe newer batches of M8's will work with firewater, it's certainly worth trying it.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
I think its a supersu issue because with weaksauce the supersu will keep listing it needs to update binary and saying reboot and try again and it does it non stop. So I think you get past the supersu update binary issue like using superuser like others listed, get past that and firewater may work for you even if it does list that it wont work for you, get your supersu issues fixed and try firewater again. Dont give up easily and it may save you the $25 for sunshine and keep it in your pocket.

okay so by now I have learned that it might not just be htcs fault but is most likely atts fault that were not getting the unlocked boot loader or the proper sources to be released
Why is att doing this? There's nothing positive for them or HTC in doing this
Is there anything we can do, does any one have connections with people in bigger companies that make this very public and sound like the huge issue that it is
Is there any else that we can do besides for that?
I think it would just be a good idea to brainstorm on wht to do to fix this dilemma

Vote with your dollars cancel service and tell them why.
Source has been released except for the most recent updates. Those will be released eventually.
I doubt AT&T is going to budge on the locked bootloader because the number of people who really care probably represent about 1% of their HOX customers.
If you're intent on pushing, the place to start would be making a stink on AT&T's social media pages.
Besides... we have unlocked bootloaders and root I'd love to go to Corporate AT&T and get to the guy who decides this stuff and show them my phone and tell them they can't stop us. There's ways around everything.

Doesn't the AT&T contract say you can't sue them?
I think you can still take them to small court which is limited to a few thousand dollars.

If you guys really want to try, just go to small claims courts claiming that you were convinced that you had the ability to unlock the bootloader, and use Peter Chou's statement on unlocking bootloaders as evidence, and then say that you couldn't unlock it. If you lose, nothing happens to you. If you win, and a lot of other people win, AT&T is going to be bleeding money.

I've never seen anything saying you couldn't sue AT&T. A Class action would be there to reverse their grip on a handset, which is HTC's flagship in North America (and arguably, the best phone out right now). It hurts devs more than anything.

its not HTC its ATT so that comment really didnt help. ATT wants the locked bootloader on all thier flagship phones. The dont want people to do tethering, and they want to be able to force you to keep that ****ty bloatware for the possible sales they would get from it. its flat out ATT greed that has them keeping the bootloader locked down. Unfortunatly right now HTC doesnt have the pull Samsung does to force ATT hand.

Then they better have the pull because people pay high amount of $ for their device and do not care whether they have the pull or not. Maybe htc should call themselves apple2 since all I read about them is giving devs hard time not releasing sources etc while on their webpage they claim to be dev friendly which is total bull****.
This new software update isn't good. Patching the hboot, no root, no bootloader unlock. We shouldn't expect any new developers developing for this phone. AT&T sealed that deal for us when they release 2.20.

Now, who's coding the HBoot? It can't be AT&T, can it? I would think it would have to be HTC because no one at AT&T is smart enough to do this...
Edit: As well, just checked HTC's site... the rom is listed for manual download. Perhaps a dev can reverse engineer it?

I hear ya man. ****, I should have got an iPhone. At least I could pester Siri about her hot sister or ask advice on hiding bodies. Even iPhones are having better luck getting unlocked.
Regardless, I do love this phone. Probably the best phone since the Nexus One.
Like you said though, just a matter of time, and, will we have bootloader unlock access? I'm going to be hopeful. For anyone who buys their device with 2.20 loaded, it would really suck to not be able to at least achieve root.
Question, gunny... do you know (assuming one has root and TBU), is there a way to freeze the updates? Is their a system app or process that could be frozen so that OTA's never show again?
I've been looking around the internet and I see no progress on s-off. It looks like the one x is close but why is no one willing to work on s-off for our one s. I've heard talk of piggybacking off the one x s-off solution but that is getting us no where. If I had the ability and know how that's what I'd be doing so can't one of our few dev's stop making ROMs and make some real progress on this. I have a lot of respect for our developers don't get me wrong but why not work on something that'll make a big change. That's the way I see it and I figured maybe by sharing my thoughts and people getting on board we can get something done on this phone. I'm tired of having to flash boot.img's in fastboot and I'm sure others with higher hboots are sick of it too. Its a big inconvenience for people who are not always home and downloaded the latest ROM over WiFi. Doesn't s-off make it easier for the devs so why not?

And there's a HUGE difference between a rom developer and someone who could actually get S-off on a device. Not many people can do it.
Technically, ROM makers are considered "chefs" and being a developer is actually more work isn't it?

This kind of talk is so depressing for people like me who were on the fence about getting this device lol. When I had the offer to get the HTC One S I first looked in these forums and seen a lot going on, so I thought it was well supported but it wasn't til after i got it that I dug a little deeper to find out things like this. And now here I am stuck with the higher hboot. Very depressing but hey, it's still one of the best phones out. It just seems it is gonna turn into an EOL device. Pretty soon everyone we'll say to hell with it and go to a nexus only attitude!

If you don't understand the difference between a Rom developer and a team of people that can break the security created by large multi-national corporations maybe you don't have a right to complain?
Besides the majority of the need to do it has already been removed. The only real reason that you would want to do it now is to not unlock the bootloader through HTC dev and we already know the method to avoid that anyways.
Just a run down on what we CAN do with s-on
Root
Unlock Bootloader
Change Radios
Change Kernels
Super cid
And most phones can SIM unlock also
What exactly are you hoping S-off will achieve?

yeah, they sure did have motivation, I guess people are getting sick and tired of achieving something that we shouldn't have to achieve. almost every other manufacture allows their bootloader to be unlocked, etc. HTC is going to have to make more changes if they want to succeed in this market.

..Change recoveries.
We do have a big difference between the 'old' and 'new' hboots, tho.
The older ones can flash pretty much anything from normal recovery. The newer hboots are way more restricted. Even if we can't get permanent s-off, it would be very nice if we got the means to downgrade hboot to 1.06 or 1.09.

Great idea! Let us know when you get us s - off...
One, as previously stated that is a serious pain especially when there's no good place to start. It's completely different than making roms. Next I had the amaze long after they achieved s-off which people threw hundreds of dollars and hours into... Guess how much changed because of it? Nothing really changed. And so here you are asking devs who already take tons of their free time to do this for free. And you're asking them to go out of their way to do more so you can save 60 seconds when you are flashing a rom. This sounds incredibly lazy and selfish. It's not that hard to go to fastboot and flash a kernel. If you want s-off you should have at least made a better argument than that you're lazy...

Its not the fact that I'm lazy its the fact that I'm never really home to be able to access my computer I work almost full time and go to college full time maybe you shouldn't call someone lazy before you know the real story it makes you look bad if I had more time to get on a computer I wouldn't have made the argument in the first place. I'm not here to start arguments I'm here to get something to change and if all your going to do is jump my **** then go somewhere else.

I too am in this thread to get something to change. I want people who work almost full time and go to college full time to stop what they are currently working on and start working on S-OFF. Seems like a dumb request huh? That's what you're asking the dev to do......

I get ya, but it really came across as, it's a pain to boot to fastboot to flash a kernel. Which sounds incredibly lazy. Because it doesn't take long at all. I probably came across harsh I get that. But at least if you're asking devs to do something for you at least offer something, some help, suggestions, time, donations, something. I don't think it's good practice to come in asking devs who are busy and already do all this without asking anything in return to cater to just your needs. When you are not offering anything in return and even donations are to show appreciation. Most devs do have a life and as stated above me, are busy as hell too. So remember before asking this that you wouldn't have anything to complain about if the devs weren't already sacrificing their time, because you'd have no roms to flash to even be concerned with changing kernels.

I'm rooted and still use foxfi.apk 1.91 I haven't updated this and it still works great. I've used root explorer to try to locate the original download the. Apk I cannot find the path that it downloaded to. I want to put this version on my wife's razor m. Does anyone know where to find the downloads from the play store?

Thank you. That was exactly where it was.
Glad you found it.
ok so i see you listed the version number, I'm guessing that means you didn't do the newest update =/ I use my phone as my internet connection and updated foxfi because it gave me an error saying i had to update it to use it.
Now i'm stuck with a 2.51Mb limit before i have to restart foxfi, Any work arounds for this? Im not trying to spend $7 for an app thats been free this long. It strikes me as someone getting greedy, And $7 is pretty steep when i can root the phone and tether for free. Just not trying to root my S3 atm.
Thanks, and sorry i'm not trying to hijack your post just a honest question

Its cool. Lol. I wouldn't update because of the limit and felt the same way about the app being free then 7 bucks.I don't mind supporting the devs for their hard work and have many bought paid apps that I have purchased. But this just didn't seem right. But as of yesterday the old version quit working had a pop-up saying it wasn't supported and wouldn't connect. So I guess it got blocked to force you to buy if you want the program.

darn, im wondering if theres a way around it or another app. Because like you i dont mind supporting dev's and i have also bought many apps, but this isn't right its been free for this long this is someone who is just getting greedy and trying to force people into paying them money. The app had over 1million downloads, If that many people use it and he now forces them to pay 7 thats 7 million dollars. I dont blame him i wouldn't mind having 7 million but still i'm not putting in on him being greedy.
Lol you guys are spoiled. The developer has a right to ask for money for his app... People have been using something he has done on his free time for free for a long time... Who knows what is going on in his life but maybe it's reached a point where the money is needed. For what it offers, it is easily worth 7 dollars one time. The only reason i have not bought it yet is because people are reporting it doesnt work on 4.1 anyway, so we'll see.

I can't argue with everything you've said even to the being spoiled lol. I have also read where it won't support the latest update too. So maybe when it works on that his fee will sound more reasonable. Looking forward to jellybean on my RAZR Max HD

Well i'll straight up say i'm far from spoiled, I've spent money on apps that i didn't have to just to support the devs. But when you go from "i'm doing this for the people and its free i just made it to help out" to "i'm charging 7 dollars when i've changed nothing" that just a bit greedy to me, I work hard for my money and i'm not about to just throw it at someone because they got greedy. I've done my homework downloaded a widget called hotspot toggle and i tether threw my phone's built in hotspot for free. Easy to use, turns on faster, and i haven't seen any issues with it yet. So i guess good try to the foxfi guy. Hope you guys find the hotspot toggle widget useful
So I just got this phone a few weeks ago ( a little late to the party I know ) and I do not have root, S-Off, or anything. Just stock Lollipop. As much as I love root, custom roms, etc. this is the first phone that it hasn't bothered me to not have root. Good battery, great camera, amazing speakers. I have had several phones in the past year and might have finally found a winner. Agree or disagree?
I love the phone yes. But I'm dying without being able to flash roms. I'm trying to wait on a sunshine update for our device. But I might just end up trading it for a new phone. I'm gonna give it a month

I'm sure you guys may know from the M9 thread, but their are some very reliable ppl with Java Clips.
I am sending mine out to MOD @dottat and highly suggest sending him a PM.
You will need to cover shipping to and from, and then in PM he will discuss the price for the actual cost of S-OFF. In the long run it really won't cost much more than SunShine depending how you ship the device/ or if you are close enough to drive to him.
However I do fully support SunShine, and not trying to push you away from waiting.

Oh trust me I know. You are one of the kindest/trust-worthy people I've met through my many years on XDA!
Wasn't sure if/what you were posting publicly, so just was just making sure they knew that price for shipping to and from needed to be covered and then within PM you'd let them know what exactly the "price/donation" would be.
I knew it was donation, but wasn't sure it was being posted publicly.
You are too kind my friend, and I hope ppl don't take advantage of this!

That's awesome man. I also just bought my M8 and have been in love since I first got it. Its much more refined then my M7 and I actually thought that phone feels cheap after going back to it.
I got my phone from swappa and it was important to me that it was already s-off just to avoid this issue, but I'm glad there are other methods for those of who are not.
Once you get this phone s-off and rooted, it opens it up to all kinds of awesome.

Actually what one needs is an unlocked boot loader and a custom recovery.img installed to flash cyanogenmod. For instance the device can be unlocked with a custom recovery and the ROM is not rooted yet one can flash cyanogenmod which is a rooted ROM or OS, whichever it is considered to be.
I just got the update and for the first time it was nice to be up to date with security patches for a change lol... the previous updates were usually a month or two behind..
But the download didn't specify fixes or improvements, I wonder if anyone knows a way to find out if there are any, like at the sprint website with a change log.. I can't seem to find one as I used to find one with previous phones with sprint.
the update was about 650 mb.
and nobody to update it to zv9. Seems the rom community has halted.
hi guys my phone update to zv8 can i do downgrade firmware to zv6 or earlier ?
No u cant unfortunately
I'm almost willing to forego my root and hotspot for an updated phone at this point. Particularly because every rom I've tried has been a goddamn Bluetooth nightmare, and somehow I suspect aosp isn't going to be better because I've never had a phone run aosp without Bluetooth issues, and I've tried 9 phones.
Hey guys, this is a new phone to me (was rocking a release date Note 3 until last week), and unfamiliar with this forum specifically. (Not sure how I like sticking all the carrier variants in one section, but given the relative obscurity of the phone, I guess it makes sense...)
This seems like as good as any place to ask fellow Sprint V20 user w/o creating a new(b) thread unnecessarily?
I'm also on the ZV9, and it's been so long since I've had an unrooted phone, I had forgotten how much of a pain in the ass it is. True adblocking alone is driving my need for root here.
Is my phone rootable with this version of software? Is the Dirty Santa the way to go? Thanks in advance!

Ugh. Thanks for the response.
The phone is brilliant (after rocking the same phone for over 4 years, even last years phone feels like magic), but this might end up being a deal breaker for me.
Do you know off the top of your head what carrier models are still rootable?
My MNVO carrier (Ting) has other options of carrier models I can use, but T-Mob seems to be the most compatible.
Either way, thanks again for the quick response. ((I apologize for the non-searching, noobish questions, it's been a few years since I was an XDAddict, and still feeling my way around this new forum section.))

yeah, the unpaid work of XDA devs is a thankless job. I try to make donations to devs that have made my life better.
And I suspect with the relative obscurity of this phone, there won't be much more root dev'ing happening at all.
Might have to make a new device gameplan. And I really, really, never want to go back to Samsung.
Thanks for entertaining my questions, you've been helpful, man.

I just got the v20 ls 997 also has zv9 preinstalled. I've been reading the forums and there is still active work on root for these phones. Thats all I know. Seems like they are trying to create a kdz or tot file since sprint never released one for this phone. Also there is a thread about creating a universal lg bootloader solution. I think there is some active work in the G6 forum and they talk about how it could help other models.... Just keeping my fingers crossed because I too haven't had a nonrooted phone in about 5 years and I don't like it. nope. don't like it one bit. The v20 is good but would be a dream if I could get root. heres to staying hopeful and keeping an eye on the resale market value.

Interesting! Good info, I'm still digging through this forums on this device, trying to wrap my head around it.
This really is a 'best bang for the buck' phone right now, esp if one is on a budget, getting a slightly older device. (I was limited to 300 or less by the wife in my search for a device to replace my old Note3) Plus the removable batt, the SD card use, a jack, a great cam...
I don't even use root that extensively (not a flashaholic anymore), but for the 2 or 3 reasons I do, it's important.

Yup. That's the NUMBER ONE reason for me. True adblocking.
Been doing my normal browsing for the last week on this unrooted device, and (long stream of explitives here) the amount ads that I had forgotten about are stunning.
Getting rid of bloatware would be nice as well.
Have to admit though, stock LG isn't horrible, compared to Samsung.
