SOLVED: S5 is soft-bricked and flashing anything through odin fails - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

SOLUTION: I was trying to run Odin in a VMWARE Fusion Virtual Machine. Make sure you are running ODIN on a true windows machine and this should help with rom flashing issues like this one. I borrowed a friend's windows laptop and BOOM! SUCCESS! I'm still a little confused as to why it worked last night on the virtual machine but it doesn't matter now. Please don't hit me too hard with your tomatoes... sneaks out the back door...
I've been lurking on these forums for years (since I had an Epic 4g Touch) and I really respect and applaud the work you all do on here. I'm really in tough times right now with my brand new GS5 and don't know where to go or what to try. I got my phone last week and before doing any OTA updates I tried to flash CF Auto Root. I used the OEM 3.0 cable that comes with the phone and ODIN failed. This left me at a soft-brick with the device only going into download mode and giving me the error message, "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." I've had no luck at all connecting my phone to KIES. This was last saturday. I tried restoring using stock samsung firmware but ODIN failed every time.
Fast forward to last night.
I bought a Micro USB 2.0 cable and decided to try to flash Samsung stock firmware using it.
SPR-G900PVPU1ANCB-20140411173003 is what I tried flashing using the 2.0 cable. I used ODIN v 3.09 and IT WORKED. My phone completed successfully and restarted. Once I got to the homescreen I noticed that everything seemed to be back to normal. I had no data loss or anything.
I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED HERE AND BEEN HAPPY... but now I was feeling overly confident since this new cable seemed to be the fix for the problems.
I updated the phone OTA twice to the latest firmware, NE5.
Then I tried to flash Phil's CWM recovery and put the SU zip on my phone storage following the instructions on a thread here.
The ODIN flash of the CWM Recovery FAILED and now I think I'm back to where I was before. I cannot seem to flash anything through ODIN (stock firmware, custom recovery, root).
I have tried flashing NE5 stock firmware and the original NCB firmware with no success. I cannot access recovery, just download (odin).
At the top reads:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-G900P
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
SYSTEM STATUS: OFFICIAL
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0X1 (4)
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE (CSB)
RP SWREV: S1, T1, R1, A1, P1
UDC START
followed by
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
I know you all are the most knowledgeable android group on the net so if I can't figure this out here then i'll just accept my stupidity and eat the cost of a new phone.
Thank you all very much for your patience and support.

You're replying to a seven month old post, and it says solved in the OP. What specifically are you having a problem with?

Im also having the same issue, the s5 we have here does the same thing, I may try a win 7 pc since the pc I was using is 8.1 x64
odin fails almost instantly when flashing stock items over to the phone via Odin.
i can either get to the download screen or the firmware error screen and thats it....testing win 7 now.

here is what im getting ....win 7 didnt seem to make a difference.
been looking for the CSC and other files not bundled in a all in one and havent been able to find them for the SM-G900p

I am getting the same thing! I am just trying to flash back to stock. Can't get anything to flash. I've tried several stock firmwares and no go.

Sounds like you guys in the last couple of posts are on a build newer than oa6. If that is the case, you can't flash oa6 or older firmware any longer.

I had the same thing finally solved by downloading file from sammobile.com.

Which version did you download?
Edit: all I get now is the 'Samsung' splash screen. Also, the only firmware that does not fail in Odin is the OG1 version but it won't boot.
Any help would be appreciated. I just need to get it to stock or something. I can get to the recovery if that helps too.
EDIT : FORGET ALL THAT!!GOT IT TO WORK!! I wiped data in recovery and it booted up

G900PVPU3BOG1_G900PSPT3BOG1_G900PVPU3BOG1_HOME.tar ( first one listed for Sprint on the page)
thats the one I downloaded for my Sprint GS5 to recover it using Odin 3.10.6

Urgent Help Needed - Softbricked the phone! :(

Ok, so get this. I followed the procedure from the sticky thread on how to flash, and Odin failed at flashing the firmware step. Don't know how. It just failed saying connection error.
Now, starting the phone gives a black screen which keeps on going like forever.
I tried to reflash, and same error at exact same step. So, I repackaged that tar file, and again flashed it, and Odin said Pass. I thought, it worked, but when powering up the system, still same issue. Just a freaking black screen.
So, now, I am confused as to what I missed?
try to flash your firmware again with latona 1st.. then flash your desired firmware.
Sent from my GT-I9003 using xda premium
I have only one folder, which is I guess for Phone files only. So, if I use PIT, won't it create problems later?
Anyways, anything is better than nothing. Will try to use latona.pit before flashing. Downloading a new firmware too, just to make sure firmware is not corrupt.
BTW, this is the exact log from ODin, if it helps.

New update. Turns out, I was wrong. That one tar file was supposed to go for PDA, and not phone. Stupid Me.
Anywho, I downloaded a stock firmware with all the three packages, and flashing with that. It worked. Now, trying to flash the new firmware again. Lets hope, it works too.
Nice br'o, welcome to xda community .
Ok, so that new package is seriously bonkers. Why the hell is modem.bin added with rest of PDA files. But, phone works now, and the firmware is installed. So, lets forget it. First galaxy sl f/w update successful.
Mods, plz close the thread.

phone has no data and will not complete an odin flash

So basicallly yesterday i tried rooting my sgs4g. I read the bible and the noob flash guide but some how i still messed up. Using super one click i was able to root the phone without any problems. I hooked the phone up to odin 1.7 and tried flashing one of the stock roms recommended in the noob guide to flashing but odin would not finish the flashing sequence and only states that the complete write operation failed. I was freaking out after about four hours and was literally trying tons of .tar files ive tried two from whitehawx off here the two from the noob guide aand no dice i dont know. i know the phone is in download mode i got that down yesterday lol but i still can not complete the flash. I have both 32 and 64 bit drivers installed on my computer but i cannot complete any type of flash. I can turn the phone on but it has no data and vibrates almost every ten seconds. It does say its still on 2.21 but baseband is unknown and kernal is stock i believe. i can pull the number when i get home. I am lost at this point im just tryilng to get back to stock or anything that makes the phone usable again. thanks in advance to any one who helps i wil donate...lol

Start with the basics - a factory data reset. See if that helps.
Also, you should not have/need both 32-bit & 64-bit drivers on your PC. That potentially is a conflict within itself. What operating system are you on? If it's 32-bit, only have those drivers. If it's 64-bit, only use those. I'd uninstall them both and then reinstall a clean set based on your OS.
Look for ODIN 1.85. It's out here somewhere. I've had more luck with it than 1.7.
Let me know how things go with this. If you're not working after trying to go this route let us know and we'll push forward.

Do you have multiple USB ports on your computer? Make sure you are plugged into one that goes directly to the CPU motherboard - one on the back. I have had issues trying to flash through USB ports that are on the front of a computer. Odin will recognize your phone, but it will freeze during flash. Just something to check.
I'm on windows 7. I have tried every usb on the laptop lol i've had a long time to try it out. So since I'm on windows 7 I should delete the 32 bit right? Thank both of you guys I'm on my way as we speak to fire up the laptop. I'll delete the drivers and search for the newer version of odin. Thank you guys again

Not necessarily. Win7 can be either 32 or 64-bit. If you're not sure, right-click on your Computer/My Computer icon, and go to Properties. I believe it tells you there. I don't have a Win7 PC in front of me so I can't be 100%.
ok i am on 64bit windows.i deleted everything i downloaded yesterday so im starting from complete scratch i also downloaded odin 1.85. I am going to try to flash the .tar that is listed in the noob guide to oden from krylon 360 [ROM-ODIN]T959VUVKB5.

I haven't looked at the KB5 ROM. Does it come with multiple files (pit, pda, csc, phone)? If so, all you should have to do is put the files in the right slots in ODIN, don't mess with the check boxes, and flash it.

What files are you using and where are you putting them?

I've never used KB5 before. What if you were to try something a bit more updated?
If you want to stay Froyo you can grab the stock KD1 from:
http://hotfile.com/dl/120929051/0ea3e13/T959VUVKD1.rar.html
IF you want to go Gingerbread, you can grab chadster's KG4 from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183413
Like Exodian alluded to, you have to make sure you have the files in the right places. Let us know what you're doing. If you can snag a screen shot of ODIN and post it, that might help too.
T959VKB5-Custom (1) in the pda file
k i am downloading both
Yeah kg4 is better than froyo. Well, wifi excluded. Just make sure the files are in the correct spot.

Cool. That was the first Gingerbread leak that came with the right boot loaders. What you're going to want to do is:
- Put CODE_T959VUVKG4_CL1385158_REV00_user_low_noship.tar.md5 into PDA
- Put hawk_Sidekick_VibrantPlus_831.pit into PIT
- Put SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5 into CSC
- Put T959VUVKG4-Phone-CL1037720.tar.md5 into Phone
Don't mess with any of the check boxes, and flash.
Let us know how it goes.
i will, sorry for the delay multiupload is taking forever today. thank you guys i should be able to try this in about 11 min

I used on the last modem (gng8) and worked very well. You must download last version of triangle away from xda. Steps are:
1. If you have an rooted S4 then you must instal with Odin original ROM (stock).
2. Root with CF-Autoroot.
3. Instal Triangle Away and run.
4.Install again Stock ROM.
With this your knox (if you have) will be tripped.
If you have problem with install stock ROM , you must do this:
1.Install last driver
2.Change USB cable
3.Change USB port.
I hope to help you!

From my understanding you should be selecting either BL or AP in Odin 3.09 for the bootloader

[Q] It's Dead Jim..... SM-N915P Rom downgrade failure,,

I am hoping that someone can help. I am a bit of a mild Panic. See I had this wonderful idea, that I could downgrade my phone back to 4.4.4. So I booted into twrp to do a system reset, and am now unable to boot the phone at all (I think I may have deleted the system by mistake.). It comes up to a firmware update failure. I have searched the forums to find a solution and now feel like I am going around in circles. When I try to use ODIN to reload the original firmware I get the following trace:

According to the searches I have performed, I need to use Odin to flash the PIT file, but I cannot find were to download a copy of the pit file. I thought that I could extract a copy of the pit file from the ROM, but the tools/steps that are given to extract the img files don't seem to work. Does anyone know of where I can obtain a copy of the PIT file so I can reinstall the 4.4.4 Rom?
You'd have to get aomeone with kitkat to create a pit and send it to you... they have to know how. It really isnt hard at all.. but its the issue of findin someone who is willing to help..
I am installing the Android SDK which gives me a virtual android device. I am hoping I can import the ROM for kitkat ad create the PIT file from that.
Well if anyone has a PIT file for this phone they can email to me, that would be Wonderful. I found a android emulator, but I can't run it because i have a crappy built in video cart that only supports OpenGl 1.1.x and the emulation software won't work without version 2.0. So I am kind of stuck right now.
Ok... this is getting bad
Ok, I guess this should have been posted in the Q & A forum... sorry about that. I am really staring to loose hope.. I have been searching for 2 days to find a pit file for the Note Edge. I find pit files for other note series, but no the note edge, and right now, I can't load any firmware on the device, nada. The partition information has been completely corrupted. I don't know if a pit file for another note series, such as note 3 note 4 would work either. I was hoping I could use a virtual android but I can't seem to find a way to load the rom I want on the virtual android to then extract the pit. Any suggestions, aside from jumping off a cliff (no cliffs around), or taking a large hammer to the phone is welcome.
(At least I still have my humor)

Post in Q and A and hope that some kind soul links you with a .pit file..
Make sure to add the instructions to your posts..
In Terminal Emulator type "su"
Then type in "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/out.pit bs=8 count=580 skip=2176"
Then look for the .pit in your SD Card..
Good Luck to you sir. I would have posted it if I had KK.
I mean, it's REALLLLLLY DEAD
So I tried to download the pit file, and that pit file failed. I think that the partition table was so screwed up that the only hope was to rebuild it manually. Since I was getting /data errors when I was in twrp, I figured that I would try to create the file structure manually. I used adb shell to get to a bash (command prompt) and issued a make_ext4fs command. It took the command just fine. Then about 30 seconds later, the system shut down, and that was it. The unit will not turn back on. Period, full stop. I took the phone in to the service center and they could not get it to turn on either. Since it is still under warranty and since I have insurance, they are replacing it.
I doubtful that my make_ext4fs command killed it. when I tried to mount /data I got an error that /dev/block/blah blah was not found, and I used that when I entered the make_ext4fs command. So I think something else was seriously wrong with the device. I hope to get the new phone tomorrow or thursday and with any luck, it will still have 4.4 on it.
Thanks for all those that helped.
The one thing no one said about your attempt to downgrade was that when uou went to lollipop you changed the bootloader. You had to to get it installed. Your attempt to go back to KK was going to fail. Ive not yet seen any attempt to go back successful. Did you try reinstalling lollipop? Or were you only trying to get KK? And with as much as happened with your phone they are actually replacing it? You rooted and bricked your phone. That's amazing

After flashing 5.01 I would've rebooted into recovery and cleared cache and it would boot then.

So, back to the original issue. If someone updates to LP, and then wants to flash BACK to a KK firmware, even if they have the appropriate KK PIT file, the flash will fail as the bootloader CANT be downgraded?

Rooted, bricked, Trying to Flash back to Stock but Odin keeps failing, details inside

He howdy ho,
Like it says in the title, I rooted my phone (using galaxys7root.com tutorial) a while back with the intent to get access to Hosts so I could keep myself off reddit at least on mobile. Everything was working fine for a couple weeks, but then this morning a lot of my apps kept crashing (not even while they were being used, just in the background. Repeat offenders were google maps, facebook and google play services). Thinking all I needed was a reboot, I restarted my phone and now its stuck in a boot loop. No big deal, I could just reflash to stock with Odin and be done with it.
Downloaded Odin 3.12.3 and grabbed the T-Mobile stock firmware from galaxys7root.com and started the process in Odin. Except it keeps failing and I don't know why. Here's what odin is saying:
<ID:0/005> Odin engine v(ID:3.1203)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<ID:0/005> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/005> Initialzation..
<ID:0/005> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/005> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
<ID:0/005> Get PIT for mapping..

<ID:0/005> emmc_appsboot.mbn
<ID:0/005> lksecapp.mbn
<ID:0/005> xbl.elf
<ID:0/005> FAIL! (Auth)
<ID:0/005>
<ID:0/005> Complete(Write) operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
screenshot --> i.imgur.com/HnVy5YX.png
Information on phone screen reads:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : [aboot]Fused 3 > Binary 2
[1]eMMC write fail: aboot
EDIT: Tried re-doing it after a fail in a different USB port, gets past initialization, but now its hung up on "SET PARTITON"
Odin log now looks like this:
<ID:0/008> Removed!!
<ID:0/009> Added!!
<ID:0/009> Odin engine v(ID:3.1203)..

Hi, it's been a while since I have done rooting on galaxy's. But, I'm still using odin. I'm not sure about that galaxys7root.com or how reliable is, but I suggest you visit sammobile.com and get the firmware that's right for your phone, check for phone model or carrier and also the firmware version that matches the one that was on your phone when rooted. Get Odin from them too and follow the instructions on how to flash at the bottom on the download page.

Thanks, I didn't know about Sammobile, I'm downloading everything from there right now, will update when I have tried it out (I'm using a free account so the download speed is abhorrent). Thanks for the reply!
Also what version of Odin are you using? Theres a special version that i was told to be used for the galaxy s7 - Odin3 v3.12 by PrinceComsy. Make sure its the PrinceComsy version.
Let us know if you need any more additional help!
It's working now, I used Odin 3.11 I got from SamMobile. No longer bricked and now its got stock firmware on it. Awesome, thanks guys!
Hey I badly need to know which firmware you used? SamMobile only has it for the sm-935f? I need it for the sm-930t, the stock firmware. I'm bricked too.

Do you know if there's a fix for this without having to go back to stock ???

Call me naive, but how do I just go about "using kies" to restore my firmware. I downloaded the latest version already.

Here is the link
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G930T/
Use the tools provided there. Follow the instructions. You should be able to restore back to stock. Regarding root, my advice is not to try it.

How can I give you 1000 thanks. I searched the better part of the weekend and Friday looking for this correct compilation of firmware. Dude, in all sincerity, you just saved me from having to claim insurance and get a different one, which isn't cheap. Took 2 hours to download but still, you are the man in my book today my friend. Thank you.
