[Q] Noob Alert CyanogenMod help - General Questions and Answers

Hello guys so i recently got into the rooting thing and so far..so good (i guess) i recently rooted my phone(LG Optimus G Pro) and added the latest CWM recovery (6.0.4.7) and flashed CM 11 Nightly ROM released 17/07/14
But i have a question... Since i installed this ROM another Nightly has come out yesterday (cant post links yet but its on the download.cyanogenmod website)
since i have noticed some problems with the current ROM i have (such as SD card not mounting so cant safely unmount it, battery dying wayyy to quick etc) and i want to upgrade to the newest one to see if those problems are fixed...how do i go about doing it?
Do i have to make another backup of my entire phone using CWM, then clear DATA, wipe cache etc etc, then flash the zip? or can i just flash the new one onto the current one without loosing anything? Please guide me on this. Thank you, you rock.

Nighties aren't promised to be stable at all times. As there is always new changes. However many new pushed updates fix such issues like in your case the mounting issues. (Maybe).
There is two approaches to this, you can either update via the built in ota updater that the developer had provided in the Rom. Or you can use the ota updater but do a clean flash, please note if you use the ota updater to update your device. It dirty flashes so it isn't a clean install. When you clean install, it ensures you that there is less issues but that's entirely the users preference. I would suggest you to check out the CyanogenMod Rom thread for your device and look for info, if there is a discussion thread then go ahead and use it.

I cant post on that forum yet cuz im new, but the OTA updater says no updates when im checking out the download page for the e980 roms and im seeing one is being released everyday. Its ok guys i cant post the problems i have here since its not the official thread. Ill just post some more till i can post on it.

This could be closed.

If you want otas I would recommend downloading from their site I stead of through their api as I've gotten a ton of corrupted downloads from their Ota system but never from a direct download from their site.
---------- Post added at 11:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:40 PM ----------
Also so long as you already have cm you can dirty flash as it acts like a normal Ota, just remember that framework mods like custom boot animations, xposed framework and custom busy box are overwritten, but it will keep all user data like apps and app data along with settings, texts, and dialer history

OTA Updates [ROM][4/13/14] GPE for M8VZW

I recently flashed my HTC One M8 with [ROM][4/13/14] GPE for M8VZW. Curently the rom is a little laggy and the camera is really slow. How will I be able to update the rom? Will it update OTA? Any idea when the lag issues will be fixed?
Thanks

It's all on the ROM developers... I would suggest you post this question in that ROM's thread for best response. Custom ROMs will not update "OTA" since you have a custom recovery on your phone. You will have to rely on the Devs to provide new ROM versions with the OTA updates "embedded" in them. (Though, I think if there is a Firmware update, you can manually apply it once someone posts a process for doing so on S-Off/Unlocked M8's)

I would post but cant since I just created an account. When flashing an update to the rom will it reset all my settings so I have to go through the setup process again?

you should not have to if youre just flashing a newer version over the same ROM but just an older version, UNLESS the dev says to wipe, in which case you will have to go through setup all over again.

Ideally, it's always better to do a clean install when you flash any ROM, just to prevent any possible issues from coming up. However, it's not always necessary when you're just flashing an update to a ROM you're already running. Though if the update includes a new version of Android, it's usually highly recommended to do a clean install. And if you're running one ROM and decide to switch to another, a clean install is recommended again, if not absolutely necessary.
I would recommend checking out Titanium Backup or Helium. They're both app backup solutions (if you decide you want to start checking out different ROM's more often, you'll be very happy you have this) that will let you restore your apps and app settings after a clean flash/wipe.

As Abe and sfreemanoh have already stated, that too is up to the Developer. If you are changing ROMs (Example: Have Stock ROM that's S-Off/Rooted and decide to flash ViperOneM8), you really need to Factory Reset your phone. Titanium, Helium, or MyBackup are three ways to save your Application/System data before your wipe.
If you are merely updating your current ROM version (Example: ViperOneM8 v1.0 to v1.5), the Developer should always post what needs to happen. In many cases, if there are just minor updates, the Devs will say it's OK to "Dirty Flash" without a wipe. Sometimes Devs always tell you to wipe and do a clean install. (ViperOne actually has "OTA" update files, which is basically a smaller update file that you can dirty flash.)
Thanks guys for the answers.

I'm using TWRP 2.8.1.0 and I tried flashing the latest nightly as well as the stable version. I verified the MD5 signature after copying the .zip to my SD card. I also did a full wipe with TWRP.
My phone is the i727R with Gingerbread 2.3.5. Do I need to update to the latest official 4.x firmware from Rogers before I try to flash with AOSPA?
Any other suggestions or hints? This is my first time trying to flash a custom ROM, so I'm probably doing something wrong.
Figured it out, didn't have the latest radio installed. Might want to add that to the instructions for noobs like me. It's easy to overlook because the note regarding the firmware is under the "contributors" heading, separate from the basic instructions.
camera doesn't work
Camera is not working for me, but everything else is fine. And pretty darn smooth!
Issue installing
I am attempting to install this using CWM and the installation of the ROM goes perfectly but then when I go to install the GApps, I keep getting the insufficient space error. I have tried Mini, Micro and Nano as well as reformatted the internal memory. Thoughts? Sorry for the ignorant post.

To be clear, I am talking about the 5.0.2 ROM not the 4.4.4 ROM. The 5.0 thread would not let me post there and redirected me here for some reason.

I'm not sure if CWM is compatible with the GApps. I recommend using TWRP instead.
But I have used CWM for GApps for all my ROMs so far and it hasn't been an issue. Why would this be different. My understanding is that it is just a space issue so I am wanting to know if there is a way to get this space issue resolved when even the smallest GApps was still too large (supposedly).

Also I am now just running Cyanogenmod 5.0 with the exact same GApps and that worked fine. Thoughts?
Different recovery
Why did this rom install cyanogen recovery, this recovery sucks and I cant get to any of my backed up roms because it doesnt give me an option, how the hell do I get back to philz?
Trouble updating
I installed the 1/16/2015 version (PA 5.02) plus nano gapps. Most things seemed to work well, and I like the look and feel, but two or three times I have experienced periods where the battery drains even though connected to a charger. This morning, for example, the phone had been on the charger all night and was fully charged. Without disconnecting it from the charger, I checked my email and then put the phone back down. An hour or so later, the battery showed low 90's percent, even though it showed that it still was plugged in.
Yesterday I tried to update to the 2/2/2015 version. After making a backup with TWRP, I installed the 2/2 zip. I have flashed several ROMS, so I am not a complete noob, but I have never done a zip upgrade without factory reset. The upgrade seemed to succeed, but after booting, I had no gapps and my google accounts were missing. I then tried reflashing the same gapps and the systemUI fix. That got my apps back, more or less, but my google accounts still were missing and my home screen layouts all were lost. I then reverted to my pre-upgrade nandroid backup and tried again, by installing the 2/2 ROM upgrade zip, the gapps, and the systemUI fix all without rebooting in between. As before, after rebooting, my home screens were gone and (I think) my google accounts were gone. (By the way, I use the Google Launcher.)
Is upgrading from the 1/16 to 2/2 supposed to require reinstallation of gapps and adding back of accounts, home screen setups, etc? If it is then such an upgrade is almost as much hassle as a complete, clean install. Can someone tell me how this is supposed to work?
I installed the Lollipop rom (and the UI patch) and am still having "Can't connect to camera" issues. occasionally, rebooting the phone helps, but then if I do something like switch from the back camera to the front, it will stop working again.

There are issues with the gapps backup script, so the gapps package should be flashed with every ROM update. The loss of gapps most likely caused your accounts and home screen to be removed.

This should only happen when using the front facing camera. This will be fixed next update.
Bummer
Losing home screens and accounts every time an update is flashed is a bummer. Putting everything back (accounts, home screens, Power Toggles settings, ...) makes me hesitate to try an update very often.
You say the problem is with gapps. Does this same problem occur with all flavors of ROMs and all flavors of gapps? I ask because my previous experience with installing ROMs has been installation of new ROMs, not updates to one already installed.
Incorrect information in battery monitor - PA 5
I've been using (and generally liking) the PA 5 for several weeks. I have noted, however, that the breakdown of battery usage, as reported by the OS, seems inaccurate. As just one example, yesterday, I started a 15-minute call shortly after unplugging my phone from the charger, with a full battery. At the end of the call, I was down to about 90% battery. That seems reasonable to me, based on past experience. The battery monitor said almost all of my battery consumption was for Cell Standby, though, with only a little consumption assigned to actual phone use. I've seen some other examples where the usage breakdown did not seem right, although I did not document them and do not recall exact details.
Am I correct that this is incorrect behavior? Are others experiencing this (or does anyone pay attention to it), either on this ROM or on other ROMs?

Hey guys, just installed crDroid on my OPO, love it so far! Was using LiquidSmooth before but didn't like how everything was dark!
Thanks for the ROM! However the bluetooth connection seems buggy. It keeps disconnecting and reconnecting my bluetooth headset (2 of them) consistently.
email
Great ROM!!
Flashed this rom yesterday and had no problems
I just can't get any of my email-accounts to sync (except gmail of course). Anyone else with this issue?
i recently instaled cRdroid in my chinesse OPO and i have 2 problems.
First when my phone is locked with the screen off sometimes i touch the power button and the screen doesnt turn on, double tap doesnt work either, the solution is hold the power button till the phone goes off or to plug the usb cable to my pc.
2nd problem is that sometimes ramdomly when i leave a wifi network the data traffic doenst come back and i see a exclamation mark (!) in the signal level.
btw sorry for my english.
Every time downloading a 250mb+ ROM and flashing it would be a prob due to poor internet facilities in India...
It would very helpful if OTA is added so that only changes can be flashed via recovery
It seems that no option for ejecting External SD Card or OTG USB Storage in Settings. How can I fix it?
Thanks in advance.
Hello all!
I wanted to download crDroid, and AK Kernel. I'm rooted, unlocked, custom TWRP recovery, everything you can ask for... I've already flashed a new ROM (I have Blisspop right now) and I wanted to try out crDroid w/ AK Kernel. I could do it by myself, but I don't want to mess up/go into bootloop. To be honest, I'm still a noob and have no idea what a Kernel is... so is anyone willing to help me step by step to install all of these on my OPO? Obviously I know how to install new ROMS (backup (if you want), clean wipe, cache, flash rom, gapps, all that good stuff)), but I'm worried on how to do it with a new kernel (I'm also trying to save battery and I heard this is a good combo. my battery life is TERRIBLE.)
Thanks a ton!

You just need to let the room boot fully once, then you can reboot into recovery and flash both the latest AK kernel available and the UKM script if you want to use synapse (kernel control app)
In terms of what to tweak, poking around the AK thread would probably be worthwhile, I'm sure a ton of people have posted their setups.
If you dirty flash Rom updates, the stock kernel will overwrite the custom one. I usually try the stock kernel for a bit (at least a few battery cycles) to see what it's like before flash G something though.

[Q] current d2lte ROM recommendations?

I followed the CM path through CM 11 on my S3 d2lte, then ran into problems with GPS after a nightly and couldn't resolve the issue. I moved to AICP and loved the ROM, but had more problems there, and now I'm seeing random reboots, plus the ROM seems to have been abandoned, possibly in favor of developing for Android 5.0.
I know this is not a "new" device, and it's been nice overall for almost two years, but I'm wondering if there's a ROM that might help me enjoy and get the most out of the time I have left with it, without constantly fighting with problems. Also, any stable experience with 5.0 builds?

I've tried more than one build on 5.0 myself and the same issue I had with each one, random reboots and issues with calling. I've been told to update to the NE1 modem but I won't go any higher than ML1.
I've ran nearly every rom out there, I've even went with the stable CM official versions and while they ran fine for a good two weeks or so after that the random reboots started happening again, the latest one I'm on is BlissStalk and so far after about almost 2 weeks I've had not one random reboot (knock on wood) and hoping it stays that way. I could suggest an older 4.3 rom which I never seemed to have an reboots on no matter how long I ran the rom. The choice is truly yours in the end

Thanks, ShapesBlue. May try this, esp. if there aren't any other suggestions. BTW, the latest Chrome on Windows doesn't seem to like the Bliss downloads:
Bliss_gapps.4.4.4.zip is malicious, and Chrome has blocked it. (same for the d2lte ROM zip).
Explanation links to this help page.
That's kind of messed up. Wonder what the problem is inside those zip files.

For Masta's builds you have to update to the latest modem for it to function properly. As for a good stable 4.4.4 rom, I really enjoy dirty unicorn last build. It comes with its on custom kernal & I've never had any issues. I would give it a test & let me know what you think

I flashed DU 4.4.4 7.8 unofficial (latest) last night using TWRP 2.6.3.1, followed instructions, after wiping everything but internal & external SD storage. Since then, no mobile signal, and "no service"/"emergency calls only"; Google Play thinks the phone has "no carrier".
BTW, after the install, also tried to update to latest TWRP (2.8.3.0) following their instructions to make sure that recovery wasn't a problem, but GooManager is full of "can't find recovery for your device"/"404"/"not found" errors. I had to download a separate app to re-flash the new recovery

I had to download a separate app to re-flash the new recovery
image file. Anyway, I re-flashed with updated TWRP, still no signal.

Yea goo manager stopped being supported awhile back. They moved onto JRummys version of the same thing. I was going to say you'd have to be on the latest version of twrp but you've already done that. I just refuse to update to the latest modem, I'll be on ML1 forever

What modem are you on? Ne1

Why not NE1?

Yes. Is NE1 that bad?
Also, what firmware is recommended these days? Noticed that the latest versions of the latest firmware and modem ZIPs do not pass ZIP verification; tried multiple different sources.
Actually I'm getting a better signal with ne1

Here is the fix for data
Suddenly..a wild baseband appears! http://www.invisiblek.org/firmware/d2/d2vzw_NE1_modem.zip (flash in your favorite recovery)
RIL works with the latest baseband (NE1, above) as of the 20140910 nightly (correct, as of this post that build is not yet available)
Manual fix to use NE1 baseband on older than 20140910 builds:
I had to do the fix for DU to get service.

Thanks. Does this ZIP pass verification for you on flashing? Just wondering as other versions of the same modem file from xda threads did not (as mentioned earlier), but after disabling verification the ZIP seemed to flash fine. Same for the MF1 firmware files.
I just installed mastamoon's CM 12 build, which is really nice, and I seem to have good mobile with NE1, but problems I've seen on other ROMs are popping up with this one too (can't get GPS to lock, and can't get USB data transfer working). I'm wondering if a bad firmware/modem image is screwing with the phone, and whether there's a modem and/or firmware image ZIP somewhere that passes verification?
Which ROM's were you on that you had issues with GPS and usb transfer?

CM11, AICP, and now this CM12 build.
btw, flashed the latest modem and firmware files on that invisiblek site: both still failed ZIP verification, and both still installed/flashed successfully, but didn't change my GPS or USB situation.

Same for me.
Well, at this point it might be prudent to odin back to stock. I had to do it a couple months ago, had the brilliant idea to encrypt my phone. It took me about 2 hrs to get the phone back to normal. You have to run casual again to unlock, install recovery, install firmware, flash any current ROM.

Q&A for [ROM] Official Cyanogenmod 12 (nightly) 5/01/15
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM] Official Cyanogenmod 12 (nightly) 5/01/15. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
I get stuck in boot animation. Anyone else having this problem?
How long did your first start after installing take?
Can we start getting fs encryption in "not working" lists for moto g aosp roms? I understand that it may be implied, but I didn't learn this fact until after I purchased the device. I assumed that an officially supported device wouldn't have such an important feature not functioning. Unless I'm not comprehending the following quote, cm12 will not be official until this feature is working. I think that all aosp roms should list this feature in the main post as working or not.
"Items not up for debate:
1) Watering down of SELINUX protections or Encryption by default. These are base protections L is introducing and we should support these items as such. If your device fails to allow encrypting, it will not get a CM sanctioned release."

I had the same problem. I solved it by dirty flashing CM12 over CM11
So, does anyone have any clue as to when cm12 will support dual sim (xt1033) ?
You can try this script from the unofficial moto-g CM 12: Lowmemorykiller init.d script, http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/5-0-cyanogenmod-12-t2950466
edit: this was a reply to a message in the main thread moved automagiccaly - sorry

Same here... I had 148 apps to be recached, this may be the reason, but I'm tired to wait and gonna force shutdown right now . i am migrating from a CM-12 unofficial to official one.

Mine is booting. By the way the first boot should take 3 to 5 min! More if you updated directly from CM11

You can try Donkey kernel but not sure.

Looks like still have to wait for the dual sim support.

What's the fastest and the less painful way to upgrade from stock 4.4.4.?
Is dirty flashing over Anerik's build a no-no?

I did it, wiped just dalvij/art cache and cache partition. Firts boot endless, rebooted in recovery and recovered cache partition from a backup, booted like a charme. Maybe if I had patience It would have rebuilt all caches and booted fine anyway.

Unlock bootloader, root, install recovery, make a full Titanium backup of apps, do a full nandroid backup, wipe all from recovery, flash CM 12, get apps back with Titanium.
SuperSu Issues
My solution for stock SU not working or having some troubles was to install from recovery this:
BETA-SuperSU-v2.30.zip
And then supersu from the market, and the supersu pro app (I bought it some time ago).
first time flashing over 4.4.4 and its stuck on cm logo for 10 minutes now.
is that normal?
should i still wait?
xt1032
twrp 2.8.x.x
GPS is not working on my device, it's a XT1032 retail, with 20140107 nightly. The relevant logcat message seems to be
Code:
I/MQClient( 1420): unable to connect to [/data/misc/location/mq/location-mq-s]:[No such file or directory]
I did a clean install. GPS is listed as working, so i guess it has to be some other problem, but not a bug in the rom?
i read that the new root method (no supersu) is already implemented in todays build(Jan 7th).
Did someone alredy restore titanium backups? does it work?
So, has anyone gotten the ROM to be able to download updates? I'm on the build labeled: 12-2015-0109-NIGHTLY-falcon and I know that theres one for the 10th now. However, when I click on cyanogenmod updates and then hit the refresh it tells me there isn't an update. I also tried cyandelta, but couldn't get an update that way either.
