Identifying the code for refined Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I live in Pakistan and we can't buy from Google Play here yet so I have to buy a new Nexus 5 from a shop most probably. We all know that after short period of nexus 5 release Google announced some refinements to the speaker grill and earpiece I guess and some other which I don't remember now.
As I wanna be sure that I buy the right Nexus 5 which is refined one so I would like to know the method to identify from the box that wether the nexus box I'm holding is refined or it's an old unit. a serial code or something that'd tell...
Thanks in advance, I plan to buy it in 2 weeks.

There are no refinements. The article that "announced" it, didn't have its facts straight.
Please ask questions in q&a not general

Oh so there was never a model released with bigger speaker/mic grills? Interesting!

Exactly. Some just have bigger holes due to "manufacturing tolerances ". A brand new nexus built this month could have either size.

@rootSU I think your incorrect my friend, take a look here...
http://mobilesyrup.com/2013/12/13/n...ogle-brings-larger-speaker-holes-and-buttons/
My 1 month old n5 is the "refined version" my n5 is different from my 9 month old. Volume buttons are much better.

That is definitely one of the "bullsh*t" articles.
I wrote an entire thread about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...lease-stop-talking-hardware-versions-t2597276
Some DO have big holes. Some DO have small holes. There is no version. There is no serial number identifier. Its just different machines calibrated differently that produce nexus 5

Ok yeah never thought about the number difference. But on my newer n5 everything is much more refined then the older one lol which is weird

Refined would be the wrong word. Different is a better word
Someone else can buy a Nexus made yesterday and it could have small holes.

I'm 100% correct..
One guy got nexus with bigger holes in November last year. He took a photo of the October phone and the November phone and wrote a blog article. From them on, every tech site reposted the same (and completely incorrect ) blog post.. So yes gsm arena are wrong. Engadget are wrong and if AT&T or sprint based their information on the same blog post, they too ARE WRONG
Every link that everyone posts trying to say I am wrong always has the EXACT same photo from the exact same Incorrect blog post. There are NO REVISIONS. There are NO REVISED SPEAKER HOLES. You can still buy a nexus 5 manufactured yesterday with small holes and rattling buttons. Thats because there are NO REVISIONS.
So just in case this has not cleared things up enough for you, there is NO WAY to tell how big the speaker holes will be from outside of the box. Thats because they are not linked to any serial number or any other information on the outside of the box. Some have big some have little and that's just the way it is.
Its not even like they make things louder or anything. Its completely cosmetic.

I'm afraid @rootSU is correct, @Xami .
Not long after the Nexus 5 came out there was a HUGE buzz started here on XDA about rev #s in the bootloader. Though it wasn't a big deal, the whole thing was hyped up and people started to speculate the meaning of this. Members started correlating the Rev#'s with these bigger speaker grill holes and started making up their own conclusions about the meaning of the whole thing.
As it turns out, many cases were found among members who had the same revision numbers and slightly different button flushness and different speaker hole styles. The whole thing proved to be nothing more than hysteria as the volume issue was fixed through one of the 4.4 updates - so no matter the size of the grill of your speakers, your volume will be louder.
To my knowledge there has been no official difference in the performance of either model in any domain. As was said earlier, these minute differences are the result of manufacturing tolerances.

One rumour 8 months ago and we're all still wasting time talking about it. If learned one thing, its that none of the tech news sites do any of their own research and perpetuate lies and misconceptions as news worthy truth.

I'm not sure what's worse, the blatant re-posting of false information that was done by supposedly legitimate news sources, or the fact that people believe the ever so slightly bigger speaker holes would sound significantly different. Even in the infamous comparison pictures you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference without someone pointing it out.

I bought mine 6 months ago and it has medium sized speaker holes. A friends two day old one has small holes. It hardly makes a difference when I compared mine with his.

Okay, let's cut to the chase here. Just tell me which code tells the date that the unit is manafactured on
I'm sorry If I said anything wrong.

What they were trying to tell you is the date of manufacturer has no correspondence to the type of phone you receive, as there was no revision or "refinement" as you call it.
That being said you can figure out which month, year, and country each phone was manufactured in by its serial number.

I know my AT&T HOX is definitely affected by the wifi problems. I don't want to replace it but it seems like the only solution.
The hardware problem being fixed is on the international version isn't it? Our phone doesn't have antenna connection in the same place.

Also, as @gunnyman has pointed out, the LTE(XL, S4) variant's antenna contacts are in a completely different place.
The best thing I take from this information is comparing Apple's "You're holding it wrong" to HTC's "It's hardware and we're fixing it"
I think I'm betting on the right horse here.

Every WiFi device has a different antenna configuration and signal strength. You can't expect every device to behave exactly the same. More importantly than whether another device gets good signal, are the locations your One X is having trouble not very far from your WiFi router, and without a lot of solid objects between the router and your phone?
Its only a tegra 3 issueeeee

I'm not convinced we all have the same issues....
So far i've found there to be 2 main problems with the WiFi.
1, Soft case depression,
2, bluetooth interference
(Very common, which plagues many other devices, Iphone & Ipad are all over Google with this issue, its to do with sharing the 2.4ghz frequency. flip off the bluetooth and the problem goes away.)
After testing I can confirm that i do not have the WiFi soft case depression problem, I reckon that's the sort of problem that could easily develop. You could create this issue by doing the very squeeze test suggested, crushing the contacts, laying them down as proposed is happening... don't accidentally sit on your phone!
The problem i and many have is the bluetooth interference preventing the WiFi from picking up signal and connecting, this is resolved by killing the BT.
I have been testing for 2 weeks, very disappointed with HTC. however the BT problem i have seems fixable with software, I think i have just solved my BT problem by swapping out the rom until i found one that works ok. I believe i have, and will keep testing.
It is certainly nice to have something in print from HTC, i'd like to see the guy in the shop try to squirm his way out off giving you guys your money back now!!

What the hell....
HTCpedia is not the official website of HTC, who the is Athanasios Zarkadas?. IN the about section for HTCpedia, they say the are just a group of people that like HTCs
i dont even know that this is an official HTC press release...
I followed the links.. its suggesting this is an HTC release, the basis for Pocketnow running the story is because they have visited XDA-developers and are quoting bunch of us!
the story makes this statement...
A statement from the company’s European division explains, “we have taken immediate steps to implement a solution in our production process to prevent this issue from happening in the future.”
Where's the official statement reference link??
There's been no recall, there's nothing from HTC to enforce your warranty in the store.
Maybe it gets released over the next few days, who knows. a little skeptical for now though.

dude so many of them did. I have so many iSheep friends who argued that there was no hardware problem.
I like Apple, they build quality hardware, but the degree to which Jobs utilized his Reality Distortion Field was obnoxious.
I sincerely hope it died with him.
Just spoke to HTC tech support over the phone. He didn't give me an exact date but he was very furious at AT&T because they're clearly the ones holding the software update for our phone back. He must have mentioned AT&T and "other players in the pot" atleast 5 times in our 20 minute conversation.
The best i got out of him "it's at the very end" and "just wait a few weeks".

So this is confusing, is HTC correct in telling you that a software release is coming to fix this, or is pocketnow correct by stating its hardware(Not confirm by anyone else except pocketnow)
We keep referring to this "WiFi issue" as one topic, but like I speculated earlier, there's 2 issues going on here, antenna conection which is hardware, & 2.4ghz frequency clash with blue tooth.
These are to unrelated problems.

Are there any places where I can buy extra batteries for this phone?

I don't like carrying an external battery charger with me, it's just too much. I don't mind carrying an extra battery itself though. Are there any websites I can order one off of, I can't seem to find any through ebay.
You are aware of the fact that you have to use a screwdriver to open the case and that the battery is glued to the phone? That's why you can't find any replacement batteries.

I know it doesn't have an SD card slot, no OTG usability, and that since I'm in Canada and with one if the big 3, I can use LTE. Just because I missed this doesn't mean I don't know anything.
Seriously, elitists like you are ruining the community. "Omg, he doesn't know x, therefore he doesn't know anything." And guess what, you were wrong.
How could you buy a phone, use it. And then realize that the battery isn't replaceable? I don't think it's the community being rude or anything but that is just the honest truth.

I haven't used it yet. Still waiting for it to come in. On my second post, I say that I'm tempted to cancel my order, because it hasn't come in yet. Seriously, this battery thing is quite annoying. I mean, the whole SD card thing took me a bit to get over, then the no OTG, and now that I see this, it's just like, seriously, why?
Honestly, if I wasn't in Canada and couldn't use LTE (I know one American company can, I don't remember which one) I'd probably just not get the phone.
Anyways, the rude part was assuming I knew nothing based off of not knowing about the battery.

The reason why certain manufacturers chose to have a non-removable battery is that doing so gives them more space internally therefore leads to designing a slight higher capacity battery vs. if there was a removable one. That's how I understand it, but then again you're more than welcome to cancel the order and choose another device out there that would better suit you. That's the great thing about having options. . Enjoy!!

Replacement batteries will pop up. Just like Xperia S. Sony said Xperia S battery is not replaceable, but can be replaced as simple as Nexus 4.
Regarding lte.. This is not an lte phone. It requires you to change spa after each not unless you use another app like taller.
Also, a it is only a matter of time before they disable lte with an ota update. I believe our only works with Rogers but I am not sure..
To be honest this does not sound like the phone for you on my opinion of you are buying it for lte and if you are worried about the battery.

I'm not sure if it's a fan boy thing as much of it's that every review has pretty much mentioned it. It would be like being shocked there was no LTE. In fact, no one has actually even defended google (lg?) for the non removable battery decision, just talked trash about the OP's lack of knowledge.
Maybe fanboy means something different to you though.

Actually yes. for every tech product I buy, I made it a point to pour over as many reviews as possible and learn as much as I can from the official specification list before I made a decision to purchase it. While I'm not saying that everyone should be like me when it comes to purchasing a new tech product, but you gotta at least know about the major features before ordering.
With regards to the reviews part, I'm pretty sure at least 80-90% of the major tech site has mentioned at least once in their review that the battery is non-user replaceable.

It's usually good to know all about it before you drop 300+ dollars on it. Answering the question, yes, I did know every feature/immediate flaw of the phone before buying it. I'm sure most people in the iPhone community as well will be surprised if he goes and asks this same question there, or asks a question about SD cards for the iPhone.
But I sort of see where he's coming from, it's just that it was mentioned a lot in this forum which is why people are a bit more shocked than needed, but I guess it wasn't mentioned aaaaasssss much in just general articles that describe the basic specs of/ introduce the phone.

hmm they are either made in Korea or China as far as I know. It says under your battery.
This is happening a lot. I don't think its an issue of misuse at this point. There have been a ton of reports of this exact thing happening.

This is obviously a manufacturing issue with the lcd under the glass. I have just read to many threads of this exact thing to believe its misuse at this point.

Right cause a wonky story and the fact that he says the phone is made in "Vtnam" means he's giving the whole story... Most of these cases are from misuse if not 100% of them. People don't realize a big screen means you need to be a little more careful. Jeese...

For everyone who's saying it's all from misuse, think about the S3. How many people had this issue with the 3? None that I can think of, and personally I abused mine - dropped dozens of times and it was still in one piece when I traded it in for the S4. I don't think it's a coincidence that all of a sudden A LOT of different people are reporting the same thing.
me either. I don't see why everyone has such a hard time admitting that there may be a quality control issue here. Just because you don't want to believe it doesn't make it not true. I am personally nervous every time I put my phone in my pocket. I have since taken out a squaretrade policy due to this issue alone. I would love to use my phone without a case but I seriously don't think its wise with this going on. I wonder if its isolated to a bad batch or a design flaw in the total manufacturing process.
It's all your fault, didn't you know you were supposed to carry it around on a down feather pillow.

read all the comments on this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFQ14_8XDqQ of the same thing happening to A LOT of s3 owners. make sure you read the comments and the problem starts to become very clear. This issue dates back to the s3 and I even found evidence of the oled on s2's doing the same thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5KxsniG_NM Samsung knows about this problem and refuses to acknowledge it. These customers are NOT abusing their phones. this is a major manufacturing issue with samsungs amoled screens.
My s3's outerglass screen majorly cracked 3 days after purchase from a mere 1.5 foot fall onto a hardwood floor. First time it saw any impact. It's ridiculous. I read many forums with tons of people having similar problems or worse like screen cracking from just being inside a pants pocket. Seemed to be an issue with the gorilla glass screens from all info i gathered. Samsung refused to even acknowledge there was an issue. Hate to think there is an issue with s4 displays too.

go buy a diff s4 dude.
So you wasted your upgrade?

To keep or to sell =/

I just got mine in the mail today and have yet to open it. I am seeing all these post with the issues of the phone and honestly they have given me allot of second thoughts. Now i am debating selling it and getting an LG G2 instead. If i open it and play with it i will immediately kill the value of the phone.
Anyone else feel like they didn't get quite what they were expecting?

Where are the mods to get rid of all these ridiculous new threads.
You didn't even open the freakin box and asking if anyone else didn't get what they were expecting. I was expecting a green box, so yes I was disappointed because it wasn't green.
You didn't open the box and you're complaining you didn't get what you expected? Interesting logic there...

You're going to have to open it to resell it anyways, no one in their right mind would trust an unopend box.
Meh. Where have you been all along? This stuff happens for every device on xda in the beginning when device is new. Happened with one, with s4, with nexus 4, optimus G. You name or and these scary threads are all there buried deep down in all those sections. If you get scared by those, you won't be buying any device. Just man up and open that box

Do you guys even read? The OP is not complaining about his Nexus 5 unit he received and he hasn't opened it yet so he can preserve the ability to return the unit and get a full refund. The OP is implying that he has been seeing issues with the Nexus 5 which he is a bit concerned about and is not sure if he wants to keep it or not. The OP didn't imply that his unit is defective nor did he say what he received is not what he expected. Sheesh learn to read.

Best phone I've ever owned. Can't speak to the G2, but I've owned Droid Charge, Droid RAZR, GNexus, GS3, Nexus 4, GS4, and Moto X. Nexus 5 is leagues better than all of those except the GS4. With the GS4, it comes down to preference, and I prefer the N5.

Just return the thing to Google and move on.. Silly thread....
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk
You're making decisions based on issues other people are experiencing.. Nothing is ever perfect considering this is the first batch of new N5's. Overtime LG and Google will work together to identify what the problems are with the devices. Especially when you aren't going to open the box and speculate that it "might" have issues. Even if if your phone had issues, you could always call Google and request an RMA to get a replacement device. Why bother buy the device if you're going to think twice about it?
Holy crap the reading comprehension of some of you guys is in the gutter. Did you not read anything i wrote? I made it pretty clear that from reading of the issues in other people post that its made me hesitant on even opening the box. That was the whole point of the post and was asking if other who had been using their phones were disappointing or would take back the action of buying. So next time you want to jump down someones throat READ the post.
As far as the guy that said i had to open it, are you serious? What do you think "New in Box" mean... it means unopened 99% of the time. Ive sold hundreds of unopened phones, they sell much faster when they are new and unopened.

Cool story bro.
I love this phone. It's fast, fluid, and a Nexus. Can't compare to a G2 or GS4 or any other current Gen phone because I haven't used any (coming from gnex), but the phone just feels great in my hand.
I'm assuming you ordered the phone because you wanted the Nexus experience over another OEM. If that's the case, go for it and enjoy your device. I haven't had any issues with mine at all and there are fixes out for some already (saw a thread here about a fix for the jiggly power button). And any real defects should be covered by warranty.
I say go for it. If you really want a different device, then sell it I guess.

Yes i wanted a unbloated Android, i have in the last 6 months had an S4 and a HTC One (current phone), i can get both of them with google editions however they both lose things(HTC One loses lots of cam functions with play edition) with that. When i saw the Nexus 5 it was a phone made for the Google edition and that was the selling point for me. I saw the fix for the button but considering we all just paid $400 for these phones we should not have to open the phone and put paper inside it so a button doesn't rattle lol

yup with 3 roms that they have to choose from
i am also thinking about the nexus 5, since there are so many mixed reviews. but we all know if google actually messed up with it, they'd do something about it.
and plus it'll hve great support
i'm just waiting for mine to arrive on thursday to see if these problems are even problems to me or maybe i'll end up loving it

I'm so confused. Make your own decisions. Use the damn phone. People with no issues is the majority. People with defects or people saying, oh the speaker sucks, this screen sucks, etc. Well again its a affordable phone with the top of the line specs.
Like someone said, this happens with every phone. This sucks, I'm returning etc. This should be in q and a honestly.

There are some noise cancellations issues which we believe to be software related. We hope the issue is solved in the next update, but we can't say for sure.

Hello all, I am new to the Nexus 5. I bought mine two days ago. I was really impressed with it at first, but now I'm being told by everyone who I speak to on calls, I sound distant, fuzzy and my mic is crackling. Also, there's a few black dots on the screen. I have done some quick research and found lots and lots of information regarding this issue. However, what I really want to know is, considering this is annoying me like crazy, is it even worth returning it and getting another one? I seen a few posts on other sites and one user had returned 5 times and still had faults. I don't know if I can trust LG again. The problem is, I love this phone so much! :/ I have 30 days to return my phone because of these faults and can either get a refund or an exchange. I don't even think there are any alternatives in the £300 price range :/ I sold my iPhone 5C for this as well! :/

Do you really have issues with your phone or are you just trolling. I notice your screen name is "Angry_Nexus5"?
I have neither of the issues you've described. My Nexus 5 seems to be perfect minus a software glitch when making calls. If you are having issues then definitely replace it through warranty. No need to ask anyone for permission to do so.

That's certainly promising. I can't see how they'd be able to overlook such a big hardware flaw if it is hardware, so I guess software could be the problem.
We all have the microphone issue. It just depends how much we notice it. Dodgy noise cancellation algorithm. Just record a video with the tv in the background, you'd probably notice it

I assure you, I am no troll. This is a well known issue from what I have read and pretending it does not exist is an insult to your own and my own intelligence.

I'm definitely not pretending it doesn't exist. I guess I've never noticed the issue since I never used video recording on this phone. Also no one has told me anything about the call quality having static. If its a known issue that you can bear with then I'd say wait it out and see if the issue gets rectified with the next software update but then again black dots on the screen might be a bit annoying for me to view so I'd probably still do the replacement.

It is a well known issue and has easy fixes as well. Simply covering the secondary mic is one of them, check out the threads discussing this issue for more help.
Personally I haven't had anyone complain about my voice and they seem to hear me fine for the most part so I've not taken any action. You also mentioned you may have dead pixels and if so you might want to RMA because of that.
The vast majority of users don't come on to report "all is well here" and so when you read forums you get a concentration of people with issues, or some unlucky/overly picky RMAers.
