Maps not working properly - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been living in home town with a nexus 5 as my daily driver for 4 month's but i experienced no error with my maps and gps location but two days ago i moved to a new city from then maps behaves in a wired manner, suppose if a ask for nearest bank or pizza hut it shows wrong locations even my gps in not working properly as when i move it doesn't move with me but for some time stays intact and then all of sudden catches my position, these error are just annoying as I'm new in city and makes traveling difficult..
Can someone tell me the cause of the error ...

Well, it seems that your location fix isnt really working as intended. Now we have to see why.
Please recheck your Location Settings, how are they setup? Go to Settings > Location and check. Try to set to high-accuracy and test again. You need a working internet-connection too to fully make use of this though. And of course, make sure that GPS is turned on, but i probably wont have to tell you that
As a good alternative, depending on size of city at least, is to store the map on local storage. Maps has an option for this. There you can select an area to be accessable without Internet connection, maybe try to use that and see if it works better.

I'd also had this problem. I needed to re-check Location, but also needed to Agree (again) with Google Terms, before I could get Maps/Navigation to work.

Quick GPS fix. From Samsung!

Samsung just wrote that apparently the use wireless networks, which is the option above use gps satellites must be selected to get proper locks.
I was skeptical because i just assumed that when I went exploring I selected it, but it actually wasn't.
Put it on, and agreed to the disclaimer and then right away the maps got my location and the live wallpaper map got my location.
you'll get an email saying google knows where you are and yeah its pretty ****ty that you have to do this, but it does work. at least for me.
not a real fix, I've had that on forever and still dont get a proper lock
Confirming that this does seem to work. It might merit mentioning that I've also messed around with my GPS settings quite a bit as well.
Regardless, I got a lock within two seconds after opening Google Maps. Cheers!

This is to assist in the GPS lock. This is not a fix.
True it isn't a real fix, hence the "quick" fix in the title.
it's just another way to help maps get a lock.
obviously this won't help in no service zones but if you're using the data anyways might as well use it to help.
plus it unlocks all the fun location based services, and that maps live wallpaper is pretty freakin sweet!
This will only give you the location of the nearby cell tower. Unless you live under the cell tower all the time, I don't think this is useful. It might be useful for things like check the nearby stores and attractions. But will not give you navigatable fixes and does not speed up your GPS lock. If you're using Google maps, try to zoom out, and you will notice a big circle. Your location is anywhere inside that circle.
That's Samsung tip is pure BS and Engadet should be ashamed to even believe in that BS.
I not only allowed the use of wireless networks for location, but also changing the GPS setting to MS Based to allow for simultaneous use of triangulation and assisted GPS... before this change I NEVER got a successful GPS lock...after I changed the settings I finally can get a GPS lock after about about 3 minutes with direct line of sight outdoors.

Not quite. its actually doing cell tower triangulation, using the signal of all nearby towers your phone sees. In the city, this can be pretty accurate and is rarely off by more than a couple blocks. To see the accuracy, turn off GPS and click 'locate me' in google maps. The blue circle around your location shows the margin of error. The more towers you are in range of, the more accurate the fix.
As far as helping GPS, all this location can really do today is help you grab the most appropriate gps almanac/ephemeris info - if youve got an internet connection. I suppose it could possibly also be used in conjunction with the gps error in some kind of a filter to improve accuracy, but as far as I know that is not being done.
I actually started getting quicker locks with just using the GPS and having the wireless networks unchecked
Just an update:
I changed the SUP/LCP setting to Auto-config and the Operation mode to MS Based. I tend to get a gps lock within a minute or two with it sitting on my dashboard. I also tried it with the"Use wireless networks" setting turned off and it worked the same.
Also, I did try out the MS Assisted SUP/LCP setting and I was able to get GPS signal while indoors, but it was less accurate all around.

I'm not saying it's completely 100% accurate, but much in the same vein that an iPod Touch can get a location using just the wi-fi this is using much the same.
it uses whatever a-gps it can and then it helps with the cellular data. triangulation. it's useful and if it keeps getting me a signal then its all good

Recent GPS woes?

So my GPS was working fine for its limited use over the past few weeks that I owned the Inspire.... Now I'm having a rough time.
I downloaded a geocaching app called c:geo and was getting very erratic location locks on coordinates (it would tell me a cache was over 200 feet away when it was literally right on top of me).
Then, yesterday, while trying to use the GPS with google maps in my car, it continually lost signal, and would often not be able to reconnect.
This is rather troubling to me, as the GPS seemed to be working fine as of earlier last week.
exchange it
Update: Just went outside and stood with the GPS and it kept searching for GPS in google maps... I think I might be returning this and getting another.

Try downloading Fasterfix from the Market.
So this is quite weird... after downloading GPS status, I was noticing that I was getting NO satellites... I leave the app on for awhile, just fiddling around with things, and out of nowhere I get a fix on 7 (in my house).
I take the phone out to a nearby cache and it's accurate within 4 meters... ?_?
Don't return the phone yet. Do to settings>location the the very last option listed should let you reinstall / recover the locations app/ Doing this fixed mine perfectly. Also remember some cases interfere with the gps antenna
Went ahead and returned it anyway, may as well while I'm still in the 30 day period. New GPS works like a charm, at first.
Also I was not using a case.

For future reference, where is this exactly?
All I see in Settings > Location is
-Use Wireless networks
-Use GPS Satellites
-Phone Finder
That option appears in some of the DHD roms and not available in the stock AT&T rom.

GPS - always wrong locations at beginning

Well, I've been using my Sensation for about a week now and so far everything is fine, EXCEPT one major bug i found:
Every time I turn in the GPS-Option, I get a completely wrong location (ie in weather, maps, places, etc) and have to wait and refresh a short time later to get my actual real position and even short time later, the signal goes back to the wrong place.
example:
I enable GPS and refresh the weather, it goes to "Fürth" (some city in Bavaria, South Germany), but I'm actually located near Berlin (on the complete opposing end of Germany). Same goes for any other location based function.
I even disabled the "allow false locations" option, but don't know further, anyone experienced similar problems?

I haven't seen this. I'll take a wild guess. Part of the A-GPS system can use cell towers and wifi to get a rough estimate of your location in order to speed up the GPS sat acquisition and lock. Perhaps the cell tower/wifi mapping in some parts of Germany is incorrect, so when it's using the local networks to find you it's flipping to another part of the country, the GPS kicks in and it locates you accurately. You could try a couple of things to test this. Turn off GPS and open Google Maps. It will normally locate you on the map within a few blocks of where you are and show a large blue circle due to the inaccuracy. Does it show you near where you are or in the other part of Germany? If it's way off then the local network mapping database is messed up. Not sure who to contact about that, but I guess you would start with your service provider.
As I recall Google has had a bunch of problems with the German authorities regarding the mapping they have done of wifi networks. Maybe that's a factor here, but who knows.
If this is the problem you could turn off the local network feature in Settings > Location. Problem is it will rely only on GPS then and take longer to get your location. But if my theory is right, right now the local network locator is hurting more than helping you.
If that's not the problem then install this app:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-test/com.chartcross.gpstest
Turn off GPS, run the app, press the Menu button on the phone then Settings. At the top press "Clear AGPS" then "Update AGPS". Exit the app, turn on GPS and see if that helps. The initial lock after updating AGPS may take longer than normal, but that's expected. After that it will be back to normal.

I have the exact same problem as the op. soon as I open google maps it shows me 10 miles away from my house. always the same spot 10 miles away. a few seconds later when it gets a lock on my location it pops me back to where I actually am. If I close google maps and open it again it jumps back to the wrong spot again, waits a few seconds and then jumps back to my true location at home.
I tried what you mentioned above but it did not help. wifi on or wifi off same difference. I read about some people saying it shows their old address and I did recently move and the wrong location it shows is about 1.5 miles from my old house. also the wrong location it shows me in is on the edge of this private reservoir that I have never been too.
Anyone else have this problem or read on how to fix it?

[Q] Incorrect Weather Location; No prediction for hardware keyboard

Hey everyone,
I'm experiencing a couple minor issues with my MyTouch 4G Slide and wanted to see if anyone had any input.
First is the weather location... when I am at work my phone's weather location always gets all weird. It happened with my G2 (before this phone) as well. On the G2, it would show my location as in Japan. With the MT4GS, it shows as Denver CO. It updates when I leave the building, but it is still frustrating for numerous reasons. First, the time on my phone switches to Denver's time zone while at work. It throws me off whenever I look at my phone. Also, after I leave and the location updates, it doesn't update the time zone. I have to go to Settings -> Date and Time, and uncheck and recheck 'Automatic' for it to switch back to the correct time zone. Finally, while Maps will read my location just fine, other location-based apps seem to be thrown off as well.
One other question is about the hardware keyboard. I have Prediction turned on in settings but it never works. It's nice with the hardware keyboard because I can skip the alt+ keypresses for punctuation and it inserts automatically, and it will capitalize I, etc. If I'm not mistaken, this hasn't worked since the recent HTC update that moved us to Google Play Store.
If anyone has fixes and/or other info about these issues, I'd appreciate your input! Thanks so much.
Are you connecting to your work's wi-fi automatically when you are there? It could be that the location information (which would affect weather and time) is using your IP address info. I know when I connect to my wi-fi at home, it will alter my location to a nearby suburb.

I wish! Our WiFi doesn't even show up on my phone... they must have the SSID hidden. I think it's because the building is older, and it must have lots of concrete or something because radios, cell phones, etc don't work well in here. Mine only works because my desk is right by the main entry door and a few windows. I'm assuming that the GPS signal could get thrown off by that as well. I'm just hoping since Maps can locate me that maybe I could fix the rest of the location-based services.

It may not even be getting a GPS signal, instead relying upon the location data of the celltower you're linked with. I've seen the location info being off by neighborhoods, but not to the extreme you've mentioned.
Uncheck the automatic update, then it will stay in the right timezone.
Also, I use swiftkey x, it has the best word prediction, and works great with the hardware keyboard.

Thank you for the recommendation! The app is downloading now and I'm already excited because of the amazing reviews it got. I'm sure I'll love it. I was hesitant to uncheck the automatic setting because I want it to sync the time... but now that I think about it, once the time is set from the network... why would it need to sync? Unless I do a battery pull or something.

Strange GPS issue

My Nexus 5 running 4.4.4 has starting acting strangely this morning with anything to do with location services.
Only started this morning when I went to show a colleague the Waze app. Said my current location is Haworth, Yorkshire!?! I am actually at Watford Junction station Hertfordshire! Lol!
Even tried Google Now navigation and said 212 miles to home!!! So it remembers where I live?
I have never been to Haworth, let alone being there now.
Have tried rebooting phone, indoors and outdoors, turning off all location services and it is still showing wrong location?
Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried in a completely different location, or go into Location settings and set it to Device only to force GPS and wait for a fix. It might just be your phone is defaulting to Wi-Fi location, and a new access point has appeared near to you that used to be in North Yorkshire!

Tried device GPS only, and not GPS/data/wifi, and picking me up fine. GPS on its own, mobile network on its own, both work fine, but not the 2 together?
It is very strange as it only started happening this week and only when I go into the mess/break room at Watford Junction station. And always Haworth! But now, as soon as I step out of the door, it sorts itself out within a minute or 2. But it does happens every time I go into there now! There is a wifi signal at work, but cannot pick it up in the mess room, so can't be that interfering?
It is not a biggy as not as if I need a satnav to drive my train! lol! And to see the weather, I look out of the door (no windows!)
