Hey gents, I have soft bricked my HTC One Mini while rooting it according to [HOW-TO][SUPER-GUIDE] Keeping Your One Mini Up To Date!!
let's start at the beginning
1. I unlocked the bootloader with HTCdev successfully, everything was looking good.
2. I tried to obtain S-OFF status, following the guides given in the thread
- None of the methods worked, but the wording of the guide says that S-OFF is not absolutely essential. I got various methods which suggested that obtaining S-OFF shouldn't actually be step 2 in this guide. At the time of trying to S-OFF, I did not have an unsecure kernel
3. I installed a stock, rooted, Odexed ROM called JMZ-M4 v.1.22.401.1 and the corresponding JMZ M4 kernel via TWRP recovery standard flashing methods.
- Tried to S-OFF again, got a "success" message but nothing happened, multiple times.
4. After playing around with this temporary test ROM, I decided to go ahead and install InsertCoin. The description of insert coin says the requirements are:
Code:
#include
/*
* Unlocked Phone @ HTCDEV or S-OFF
* Custom Recovery
* Common Sense, Brains and logic
*/
Seeing as I unlocked my bootloader @ HTCdev, I thought I wouldn't need the S-OFF, and continued.
- The ROM hung before bootloop (no animated part, just HTC logo) so I reset it (hold down power) and booted into bootloader and then recovery, wiped everything, went to flash it all again (I'm a veteran of the HTC Hero so know a bit about dalvik errors and assumed it was just a wipe problem) and there were no files.
-This made sense since I'd just wiped it, but now I don't have any USB access to my phone.
5. I can access adb in recovery and fastboot in fastboot USB, but other than that I have no sort of communication with my phone. In recovery, I can't browse any files. According to CWM, the /sdcard folder is unmountable, and in TWRP there is no adb connection whatsoever.
6. Using ADB Sideload, I managed to flash the PacMan ROM, but when booted up, neither the phone nor the computer detect any connection (no adb, no mass storage - MTP or MSC).
- adb Sideload refuses to load any Sense ROMs - I get a no status error, and I assume it's because the files are too big and cause a timeout.
7. Things could be worse, so I decide to move on and install GApps but still don't have a Play Store app.
8. I found a "fix" for the USB connection problem but it doesn't work:
Code:
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
fastboot oem eraseconfig
9. Another USB fix was to revert to stock recovery > clear storage > factory reset > CWM recovery > flash ROM
Obviously, this doesn't work either.
10. Cannot get anywhere setting up S-OFF anymore, adb shell will not let me cd into /data/local/tmp, however it still lets me push files to that directory (curious?)
Just so I can recap:
S-ON HTC One Mini, no USB connection, and only runs stock Android ROMs, otherwise results in a brick.
Cannot achieve S-OFF with any method, each method results in an error or says "success" but doesn't actually work.
TWRP does not allow adb in any way, but allows me to browse files on the phone (could install from zip if I could put one there)
Code:
C:\Android>adb devices
List of devices attached
CWM allows adb and adb sideload, but does not allow me to browse files on the phone (so no installing from zip on sdcard). adb pushing large files results in a recovery crash (so can't push ROMs that I could install through TWRP)
Code:
C:\Android>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT41MWA01962 recovery
Booting into PacMan lets me use the phone, but does not have Play Store nor any connection with the computer through USB. Every other feature seems to work.
Phone BOOTLOADER info:
Code:
M4_UL PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.21.0000
RADIO-1.23.40E.00.26
OpenDSP-v19.2.0268.0927
OS-2.12.61.3
eMMC-boot 1024MB
Dec 3 2013,23:49:27.0
And serial number:
Code:
HT41MWA01962
At this point, I really don't care about roots, upgrades, firmware or anything. I just want to be able to use my phone like before I did any of this stupid stuff. I have a working knowledge of adb and fastboot so didn't anticipate any of these faults (I assumed 5 years of modding an HTC Hero would prepare me for this, but I was wrong).
Would it be too much to ask for someone more knowledgeable than myself to give me a hand?
Thanks, there's a $10 donation in it for anyone who can get my phone back to stock again or (even better) set up S-OFF and allow me to root properly as you learned folk do.
yeah sideload flashes instantly, I'm not keen on it!
try this ADB PUSH Rom & Gapps (not Insertcoin) to /data/local/ then install from that location in recovery.this should give you a working phone in the meantime
**edit** sorry just re-read your post, you cant push large files!
Go to your bootloader and relock your phone by using fastboot OEM relock. Then unlock again. Now flash stock recovery. You can Now use rumrunner or revone to get s-off. After that flash the firmware from InsertCoin. Flash the InsertCoin rom and You are on your wat.

Is there any way to find out which stock recovery I want? there are 3 versions, 2 with x.401.x and 1 with x.206.x, which should I use?
Also, I know that I won't be able to use either rumrunner or revone until I get USB support back, which isn't happening
You must use the 401. You can use revone After flashing the stock recovery.

sorry if I misunderstand, but how do I use adb with the stock recovery? I don't have any USB access at all when I'm running an OS, and only have adb in CWM recovery.
EDIT: I got reasonably far using the method outlined on this XDA page, under the heading "ROM update without SDcard" and using Philz recovery. This only seems to work in Philz Recovery, other recoveries cannot mount /data for some reason?
EDIT 2: GOT THE BADGER! I fixed my own problem, it only took 26 hours... I'll write a guide to help anyone with a similar problem but for now, I'm going to bed.
You first must flash stock recovery trough fastboot......Then You will be able to use adb-sideload trough twrp.

1. Relock bootloader
2. Flash stock recovery
3. Get s-off trough rumrunner or revone
4. Unlock bootloader
5. Flash twrp
6. Flash firmware InsertCoin trough fastboot
7. Flash via twrp via adb-sideload InsertCoin rom.
You should be ok now!

The S-OFF part doesn't work because I don't (didn't) have USB when the device was powered up, nor could I mount /data/local/tmp or any other folder. Managed a fix with a modded CWM recovery and a sneaky sdcard emulator trick. Thanks for all your help anyway!

Superboot is a boot.img that when booted, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK). No need to flash any partitions, no need to mess around with ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just boot the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Superboot r1 - DOWNLOAD (ROMraid) - MD5: 4b6195abc8b4bedc51e21c3c2e9dc30e
The superboot image is also 'insecure', allowing you to use 'adb remount' as well as having full ADB root access to your device until such time as you reboot after running this process (it's a non permanent ADB root as it's a 'fastboot boot' and not a 'fastboot flash').
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
- Put your device in bootloader mode - Turn off the phone then turn on with the 'volume up' and 'volume down' buttons both pressed to enter the bootloader (as pictured below)
- WINDOWS - double click 'install-superboot-windows.bat'
- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh' followed by './install-superboot-mac.sh'
- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh' followed by './install-superboot-linux.sh'
Note: If you are using a retail device, you need to unlock the bootloader first via HTCdev. Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device.

hi
i tried this method and i think it bricked my phone...
phone was unlocked and the battery was round 90%
phone turned black even thought my pc recognized as " my htc " i tried to flash a rom but ruu said that battery is under 30 % ( it took me 20 min to download ) when i tried to power on capacitive buttons are blinking so i took htc charger to charge the phone, when i woke up in the morning the red led is on - i thought it is charging , after i while i connected with pc but now it doesnt recognize at all.
i did some searches but no luck until now
what i can try next ?
Followed all the steps. Gets to a point where it says waiting for device, yet nothing happens. I ran the htcdev unlocked and it worked.
I have an htc one s and use a mac with OX10

Are you using TWRP or CWM as your recovery?
twrp
You will not be able to flash any custom roms as long as your bootloader is locked. The most you can do with the locked bootloader is use an RUU to get back to stock. Which bootloader are you on now? 1.14?
my bootloader is unlocked at this moment. um would my bootloader be where it says.. hboot? if so its 2.13.0000?
Correct, the bootloader is an all white screen, with the radio, hboot and other such info at the top of it. Well you are good then. Just so we are clear you have a HTC One S S4 right, you dont have a HTC One S C2? Thats very important that we get that info correct, we don't want to brick your device.
im almost certain its a s4.. i got it from t mobile here in the uk any check i can do from the bootloader to confirm?
If you're not S-off, did you make sure to fastboot flash the kernel after flashing rom in recovery?
From my Evo LTE, yup.
im s-on, and no i dont believe i did no
how would i go about fixing that?

You should have read and followed the instructions in the OP of the rom you downloaded so.
Try flashing boot.img in fastboot mode with typing 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' in terminal window. Hope you're familiar with the platform-tools in android development kit...
Else download here and
follow the step by step instructions.
reboot into bootloader with your phone connected to you pc. make sure you are in Fasboot USB mode, it should say that in the bootloader screen. Move the boot.img from whatever rom you flashed and put it in the same directory as ADB and Fastboot. make sure its named boot.img. open a command prompt that points at that same directory as ADB and Fastboot, type
fasboot flash boot boot.img
Click to collapse
and after its done type
fasboot erase cache
Click to collapse
have tried that and still get stuck on the white htc screen saying this build is for development purposes....
thanks for trying so far
Is it still locked? And you're on custom recovery (twrp)?
You need to reflash the ROM you want. Then reboot into the boot loader from TWRP. Once there, follow my previous instructions.

twrp - mount - mount usb storage
Then copy that file to root or wherever you want.
Which TD version do you have?
Hi all I was given a HTC One XL telstra version it had no OS not a thing on it and I have managed to flash rom and TWRP but have no idea where to go from here I can use fastboot and also mount the SD card via TWRP now how do i get an OS onto it and what am I looking for exactly?
Ok so you have TWRP recovery? If so just download a ROM on your PC, then enter recovery on your phone, connect your phone to the PC and go to the mount menu then mount usb storage. Copy a ROM to the phone. Enter the wipe menu in recovery, perform a full wipe (cache/dalvik cache/system/factory reset). Enter the install menu in recovery, locate the ROM zip you copied to your phone, swipe to install. If the phone is s-off you can reboot now and it should boot into the OS. If you're s-on you need to flash the boot.img via fastboot, so reboot to the bootloader. Locate the boot.img in the root of the ROM zip on your PC and copy it into your fastboot folder. Issue this command:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Once that's done you can reboot the phone and it should boot into the OS.

No, if you use one of the stock Telstra ROMs found within our development sections you don't need to relock your bootloader at all. You just flash it in recovery and away you go. If you're talking about an RUU it's a different story, with more preparation involved. There's really no need to run an RUU at this point though so just stick with the Telstra ROM (in zip form) and you'll get the full experience.

Oh, something I did want to mention. You're not limited to using Telstra ROMs, there are some great ROMs with great features here in our forums. We're very lucky that there are some great devs still providing us with ROMs even though the device is over 18 months old, they're keeping this phone relevant. Just make sure you stay within this device forum and you'll be super duper. Here are the links to our two development sections:

download Android SDK for ADB.
Download revone: http://revolutionary.io/revone
Guide:
You can use any OS for that guide, you just need an cmd-tool.
Download revone (above) and copy it to your adb folder, while Android is running.[/B]):
open cmd and use following commands:
Code:
adb push revone /data/local/tmp/
now use these commands:
Code:
adb shell
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp
Code:
chmod 755 revone
Prepare S-Off:
Code:
./revone -P
revone will give you an error now: "error message -2"
NOW Restart your device but leave USB debugging turned on and use following commands:
Code:
adb shell
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp
Code:
./revone -s 0 -u
revone should tell you that everything went fine and i got S-Off.
Here just some other commands for revone:
-u --> Unlock Bootloader
-l --> Lock Bootloader (It will not simply lock it, it will lock it like it was never unlocked)
-r --> Relock Bootloader (mark the device as unlocked)
-t --> "Tampered" will be removed from bootloader
!!!IMPORTANT! YOU NEED FULLY STOCK ROM, STOCK RECOVERY AND STOCK BOOT BEFORE YOU CAN USE THIS!!! fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 --> restore S-ON
If revone say OK then reboot your device into bootloader and check if you got S-Off[/code]
You should see S-Off Now.
Optional: Run revone (via CMD) and remove that tampered flag:
Code:
adb shell
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp

--> Its 8 times the 1!
now lets check it twice:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Or:
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Code:
fastboot oem readcid
--> You should see CID 11111111 now.
Now your device is S-Off!

(Maybe TWRP will ask you to restore root, answer with NO!)
Wait until device booted and connect to WIFI.
Goto settings -> info -> Software-Updates and let him check for an OTA
If you have SuperCID you should get an OTA notification.
Download it but NOT install it.
Connect your phone to your PC and copy the OTA
(sdcard/downloads/) to your PC.
Reboot your device into Bootloader and open CMD
[Make sure you have WinRAR installed, its the only one wich worked for me]
Open the OTA file with winrar, inside it there is a firmware.zip file.
extract it somewhere or if you are lazy like me download it here

Open the firmware.zip and extract the recovery.img and copy it to your adb folder.
Boot into bootloader and connect via fastboot USB to your PC
open CMD to use (in my case) cd /Android/ (if your adb folder is on C:/Android/)
now use
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
now reboot your device into android.
Let it check for OTAs and if it show you that an OTAs was downloaded and waiting for install....
Install it!
Your device should reboot into Stock recovery and install the OTA.
It takes 5 - 10 mins after it the device reboots into a fresh & clean Android 4.3.
NEW 24.02.2014
After installed to 4.3 just look for a new Update.
You will get a notification that a new update is ready to download.
After downloading Android 4.4.2 just install it and... your done!
You can do now a factory reset to set the device up from beginning
If you want to root your device just download this file and install it via recovery:

flash it from running android and simply reboot
(You can flash boot.img & recovery.img also with this app)

I already did it to 6 devices now and it works without problems.
The devices was from Vodafone, O2, Telekom and many others

He's uploading. You can see the status on the original post, in a grey case "uploading"
Thanks a lot for this. One question though: I have already got S-OFF with rumrunner. Can I get S-OFF "again" with ReVone, so I can later return to S-ON if I need to return my phone for warranty repair?

Its still uploading. And Iam still at work. To do s-off u need the rooted Rom and custom kernel, I tried it without and it's not working but if u have fully stock make a system dump to be safe. If u have s-off it doesn't matter if the boot loader is unlocked or locked. U just need it later if you have to sent it back to HTC. I will keep you guys updated with the upload. I will also upload a system dump of my currect 4.3 system. But u all need s-off.

@MirageBlader Can remrunner be used in the new update or is revone the only option?
I dunno, maybe yes. I used this methode and I can confirm that it work so. Try rumrunner and tell us if it's working

Cheers ^^ I'll report my experience with rumrunner S-OFF at weekend if no one has done it prior to that.

was this for me? If so Yes I did and was able to get the tampered message away, what I would like to do ideal is load 4.2.2 stock back on it and then relock the bootloader so that I can return it to HTC without them lifting an eyebrow. The battery started to swell, and pushing out the back and now the screen is starting to bleed red. So I want to put it back to stock and return it, I don't want them to void the warranty because of software due to a major hardware malfunction. If you want to see photos check out my thread here

I was able to do the S-OFF with the Magio R4 rom though... should I still switch over to the other Rom? Maybe make sure that installing Specific ROM and Kernal is step one if that is the case.
Meaning to install CyanogenMod I followed CyanogenMod wiki instructions (can't post link here)
Only that I have TWRP instead of CWM.
When I got to installing "CyanogenMod from recovery" I got a message saying that the pushing had failed because permissions did not allow it.
So I tried a solution they suggested for a similar message which did not work, and then I read the note at the bottom that says the kernel should be flashed via fastboot, I flashed it but now it's just blank (I guess because it has an alien kernel and the rest is the same)
I dont have a copy of my previous boot.img
Not enough information provided, please provide the following:

What do you mean you couldn't do it on adb? Do what on adb? You don't use adb to flash a ROM.

I mean to push the rom on the root of the sdcard: look at the instructions I followed:
Place the CyanogenMod rom .zip file on the root of the SD card using adb:
Transfer your file(s): adb push YOURROMZIP.zip /sdcard/
If you boot directly to recovery and have an internal sdcard, you may need to run adb shell mount /sdcard or mount data through the recovery menu before transferring.
If you see "error: device not found" there is likely a driver issue on the PC.
If you see "error: insufficient permissions for device", try "adb kill-server" and then run "adb devices" to see if the device is attached.
On some devices, the zip file can be copied to the device using standard USB Mass Storage or MTP support. Boot the device normally and transfer the file to it.
Optional: Place any supplemental packages (e.g. Google Apps[1] or kernel) .zip file(s) on the root of the SD card.
Boot to recovery mode on the device by holding With the device powered down, hold the Volume Down and Power buttons until HBOOT appears, then release the buttons. Navigate using the volume keys and select RECOVERY using the Power key..
Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the physical volume buttons to move up and down. On most devices, the power button is used to confirm your selection, although for some devices the power button is used as a "back" button to go up one level, in which case the home button is used to confirm the selection.
Optional/Recommended: Select backup and restore to create a backup of the current installation on the device. If this option is missing, it's likely because the stock ROM has overwritten your custom recovery on boot.
Select the option to wipe data/factory reset.
Select install zip from sdcard.
Select choose zip from sdcard.
Select the CyanogenMod file you placed on the sdcard. You will then need to then confirm that you do wish to flash this file.
Optional: Install any additional packages you wish using the same method.
Once the installation has finished, return back to the main menu, and select the reboot system now option. The device should now boot into CyanogenMod.

So you never actually flashed the ROM but you flashed the boot.img from the ROM zip anyway? No wonder it isn't working, you've flashed an incompatible boot.img onto whatever ROM you previously had installed (which is still installed by the way because flashing a boot.img does not flash a ROM).
All you needed to do was mount your sd card using TWRP (menu/mount/mount usb storage) and copy the ROM zip across, then install it. You have s-off so you don't ever need to flash the boot.img separately.
I really think you need to do some research, it seems you lack even a basic understanding of what you're doing. You don't know what a boot.img is or what it does or how or why you would need to flash it. You don't seem to know how to use your custom recovery. You don't seem to know how to install a ROM.
A lack of knowledge is almost always what leads to somebody bricking their phone, which I'm sure you don't want to happen. Do yourself a favour and spend the next couple of days reading up so you have a better understanding of modified devices. A great place to start would be my Evita FAQ thread and my How-To Guide For Beginners thread, you'll find both in my signature.

I'm not sure where you found that note but it isn't entirely correct. Only Evitas with s-on and a hboot greater than 1.09 need to flash the boot.img via fastboot.

This is where it's from
wiki cyanogenmod org / w / Install_CM_for_evita
I'm sorry for having hurried and done that but I couldn't flash the ROM and there were no more instructions, I've been reading for the last months, and even though I thought replacing the kernel could not be the best idea, it was the only idea I could get from those instructions and I thought maybe the kernel would have to be moved first for some reason. Anyway, thank you very much for your patience, I have to do it today because I have to travel and at&t limitations on the network -since it forces 4G- won't allow me to use my current carrier. I tried just moving the ROM by mounting and it worked. Thanks man
