Noob question.
Will unlocking and rooting a NS4G allow me to switch to Verizon or other cdma companies?
Thanks

Not Verizon but cricket and some other cdma carriers. There is a q&a section here also, just so you know

Verizon uses different 3G bands so it won't work.
Uh, doesn't Sprint roam and data roam on Verizon?
You can't flash a sprint phone to work on Verizon's network. It doesn't work

They do not but not exactly. Go look at the data bands on a tech sheet for a verizon phone vs a sprint phone.
And even if they were the same, they lock the esn number

once they find out you are doing that they will ban you from the network. have fun having your contract terminated.

Not true. Sprint has roaming contracts for a reason, and we have unlimited roaming.
I've never seen anyone's contract get terminated over it, then fine, make a trip to t mobile.

This is true. Sprint and Verizon offer network reciprocity in their roaming contracts. They will work, technically, on each others networks, but the ESN lock would disallow a change.
I run a Verizon PRL on my wifes Epic and it functions just fine on Verizon towers, but will always show as "roaming". We have not had our contract termed after almost four years with various phones, because it will still default to Sprint tower first.
There are guides on how to get a Verizon PRL loaded, so go give it a try. No harm in it if you dont **** up your profile...but even then, Sprint is pretty cool about reprovisioning.
Yes you can run a Verizon prl on a sprint phone. You can't flash a sprint phone to Verizon though. It just doesn't work. And that's what the op wanted to know.

Actually, it is possible to get a Sprint phone on Verizon, but it would involve changing of the MEID/ESN, which is illegal. More or less, you trick Verizon into thinking its one of their own phones. You could try your local metroPCS, Cricket, or US Cellular dealer as they might have the experience to do this. Also, try mobile-files.us.
Also, just to re-affirm, Verizon and Sprint share the same bands 3g and 1x.

Sprint will boot you for too much roaming. Also, your roaming is not unlimited. 200mb of data roaming is all you get. Also if you use more than half of your normal voice usage in roaming, sprint can terminate your contract. I have seen it happen, I work for sprint.
This may be different when you actually use a verizon prl as I don't know how that looks to sprint on their systems. I've never tracked usage while using a verizon prl.

I have read many forums and have flashed new PRLs with QPST but have never really got it to function properly. What PRLs are working for you guys (Verizon or hybrids) and what steps do you take after you write the PRL to your phone?
Exactly what does using Verizon's prl do? I'm a little new to all of this, but to my understanding, you can basically constantly roam on Verizon's 3g network? If so, does the phone struggle at all deciding which tower to connect to (thus hurting battery life)?

I'm using a hybrid PRL that will roam on sprint and runs normally on verizon. Where I work verizon is not available so I use sprint all day while I'm there but when I'm at home I am using Verizon, the speed difference is incredible in some places, I might get 100Kb down with sprint and 300Kb with verizon, or the opposite it doesn't always work out it your favor.
And to the guy saying I'm going to have my contract terminated, why are you being such a jackass? No they aren't going to terminate me for roaming 100megs a month. Not everyone abuses the system.
*THEY mostly CARE ABOUT DATA ROAMING! SO DONT USE DATA CRAZY!!
* WHEN YOU ROAM U USE YOUR ANYTIME MINUTES*
DON'T GO OVER 300 MB in data Monthly*
ALSO NOTE that if you abuse this u get a warning letter** Ur not just dropped..
Those are the basic rules. Ive long been using a HYBRID PRL!!! and works wonders...For those who need it
Can you guys point me to where I can find the Sprint/Verizon hybrid PRL please?

Verizon and Sprint have the same frequencies. The only thing preventing you from activating the phone on Verizon would be the ESN not in their database; they will only activate phones in their database.
I know you can definitely activate it on MetroPCS/Cricket. If you just have no signal in certain areas and want to force roaming, download Roam Control. I think it's like $4 but it works beautifully and the dev even just added a homescreen widget so you don't even have to go through the app.
My service bars are full but it has an "E" instead of 2g, 3g, or as I would prefer, 4g. Does anyone know if I will have to root my phone? Or what my limits are considering it is unlocked and working on T-Mobile?

Im pretty sure you're gonna be stuck with Edge as in the bands are different for 3G and Hspa
I have a friend that has an Atrix 4g unlocked on T-Mobile, and he has claimed to have gotten a 4g signal in one fringe area. He said that it was very spotty at best but it worked. I suspect it was some kind or roam signal he caught, or he was delusional. But Edge is definitely the best you will get since the frequencies are different. There is no fix for that, it is a hardware thing.
Oh wow... that really sucks. Thanks for the answers though. What if I root it or that still wouldn't be able to help? Edge is pretty ****ty service for such a nice phone, which is why I got it... plus I got a hell of a deal on it lol

I have heard the same as lilhaiti & JRW 28. Tmobile has different frequencies and the best you're gonna get with a non Tmobile phone is Edge. And as said prior, it's a hardware thing, not software.

Atrix 2 Unlocked No Signal
I have successfully removed the network lock on an Atrix 2 but gets absolutely no signal/emergency calls only with a T-Mobile sim. When I search for Network providers only AT&T shows. I was wondering if the radio was locked for some reason. Anyone else had this problem?
(For those of you who like to throw out the simplest ideas: Yes T-Mobile has service in the area. Yes: I have done a reset and chaged sims etc..)

That was my thought too. What plan are you on? I read that you can use their 30 dallar unlimited plan when you activate a new sim card.
I still have the hope that at some point after the BL gets unlocked we might get a hacked radio kernel of sorts that will allow use of t mobile bands..... The global 2 did something like this to allow use of t mobile...... One can hope.....

You can get 4G on T-Mobile, but only in certain areas as of right now. Pretty soon though, after T-Mobile starts utilizing the frequencies gained from the deal going through, you should start seeing more 4G in more places. But we have to wait and see if it actually happens.

PS. The 4G HSPA is fake 4G, it is just an enhanced 3G connection. So in reality Hspa = 3G

I live in Vietnam, and I have a problem with Vinaphone network, added APN, but can only use HSPA (4G icon).
If I switch to GPRS (E icon), it says connected, but I cannot ping pass.
Other network (Viettel) is normal.
Even if the bootloader gets unlocked I still believe it would be a hardware issue not an issue of the radio software. They use the same 2g frequency so you can still get edge, but when it comes to 3g they operate on different frequencies. Some phones are made with the hardware for both frequencies though. My Samsung Vibrant (Tmobile phone) actually had the hardware to be used on AT&T 3g! The radio software was an issue unfortunately and it didn't switch well between 2g and 3g, tried all sorts of radio software but had no luck back then.
From what people have experienced by taking this phone to AT&T though, its looking like the Atrix 2 doesn't have the right hardware for the Tmobile 3g frequency.
I'm not one to say something is impossible though. Who knows.. maybe through the failed merger of AT&T and TMobile, TMobile was somehow able to gain access to some of AT&T's 3g towers (doubtful), since they did gain coverage through the breakup agreement after the merger failed.

In certain markets, they will get part of the frequency that AT&T uses for 4G. I forgot what bands exactly, but if you do a Google search, you should get more info.

I'm using unlocked Atrix 2 on T-Mobile. And I did get 4G signal when I was in downtown Bellevue, WA. I didn't believe so I ran few speedtests, best I got on Download was 1501kbps, and 1416kbps Upload, and it wasn't roaming. So yes, it works in few places right now.
Idk if this has been confirmed, I searched a little and didn't see anything, I have an unlocked AT&T HTC One X on T-Mobile prepaid unlimited $70 plan and just started getting LTE today at home with it, speeds went up from a best of 14mbps on H+ to 22mbps the first time I ran it on LTE. This is going to be nice being that for some reason they never block my tethering so I use it as my home internet lol.
I can't believe the upload speeds, I used to never get more than 3mbps now its hitting 16mbps lol. Hooray for unlimited uncapped 4G LTE for $70 a month, and I've ran it up to 35 gigs one month so it really is uncapped.

Lucky duck! Does anyone know if there's a website somewhere that's keeping track of this kind of data? You can't get it from T-Mobile themselves unfortunately. I'd consider leaving Straight Talk for T-Mobile if I knew I would have working data coverage in most of the places I go with LTE in my home town. I hate having to wait for wifi to do anything big. The One X in unsupported areas is so slow you couldn't google to save your life. At least with AT&T I get reasonable speeds everywhere I go except tiny little towns.

Following up on your experience with TMO and One X
I was really glad to see your post about the One X getting LTE service on T-Mobile. I just switched to T-Mobile from AT&T with quite a few phones in my family (cut my bill almost in half!) To make a long story short I popped the T-Mobile SIM in my iPhone 5 and connected straight to the LTE network. Needless to say I was surprised because T-Mobile does not make any mention of having LTE in the Sacramento, CA area, but two reps did confirm that my LTE service was here to stay. Unfortunately my iPhone 5 and a Galaxy SIII and Note II (all originally purchased for AT&T and then unlocked for T-Mobile) seem to revert to the EDGE network and then get permanently stuck there after about ten minutes of LTE. Have you noticed that happening with your One X? I've always been a big fan of the One X and I would love to have one, but I'm not sure if it supports the HSPA+ 42 network and or how well it keeps a lock on the LTE networks for T-Mobile. I'd love to hear how you like it after having a few weeks to try it out.
Thanks and sorry it's a bit off-topic, just wanna see how the One X holds up on T-Mobile's network!

I just sold my galaxy s2 (t989) because not only was it slower than my htc amaze, I just couldnt stand touchwiz. I cant understand why anyone would want to own a samsung galaxy smartphone, easier to brick, no access to hboot, nice screen, hardily any widgets, lags when switching apps, I dunno, I just realized I made a mistake trading my amaze for an s2, and I almost got a one s, but my dad has one, and I figured he would always be cool with trading me whatever I bought, so I took a $250 risk with an Att one x unlocked. I had no idea that it even had lte! Not to mention that I didnt think tmobile had lte cranked up in my city (Jax,Fl). Im very much stoked with a really nice phone that downloaded venomxl rom in less than five minutes.
I live north of Atlanta and switched to T-Mobile several months ago. They rolled our LTE this summer and so far the speeds have been great. I regularly get 25-35 mbps down and 15-20 mbps up. I only get HSPA while in my apartment, but am still able to achieve speeds in the high singles to mid-teens. Coverage here is decent although I have noticed several dead spots, most noticeably along GA400 north of town which is a major highway. Kind of unforgivable but I am hoping the spectrum purchased in the MetroPCS acquisition will better coverage since they had a big presence here as well. All in all, I am happy with the service and glad I switched from AT&T.
I get good speeds when I'm outside.
I'm on an good signal area yet I have basically unusable data inside.
I actually just wrote T-Mo a letter requesting an ETF Waiver because of the bad service.
I almost got fired because of missing a text...

I have Straight Talk with a T Mobile SIM in my Nexus 5 and I am getting awesome LTE coverage, although my friend has the exact same setup and is only getting H data and not LTE. We are both using the same APN settings, and the only difference that I can think of is that I bought my SIM card more recently. Thanks for this. I tried to contact useless Straight Talk support regarding this question. They didn't seem to understand it, sent me the at&t APN settings, when I called them on it, they sent me the non-smartphone APN settings. They said that yes, t-mobile does support LTE, not just H+ (but I didn't actually trust them to understand the question), however said nothing about needing a new sim card. I have the light pink sim right now.
However I'm still not entirely convinced. Here's a picture on ebay of what I assume is the new hot pink sim:
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Straight-Talk-Micro-SIM-Card-T-Mobile-Network-/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/b7gAAOxy3zNSlQHw/$_57.JPG
You can see clearly on the card that it admits "4g" is HSPA+, not LTE. I'm also suspicious because T-Mobile has a different APN setting for LTE, while Straight Talk does not. Has anyone checked the "Mobile Network Type" in settings to verify that you really truly are getting LTE? Could the hot pink be because it's in micro sim size? The at&t cards have a similar color scheme (light blue for full sized sim, dark blue for micro), and I think offering the Micro Sim size for t-mobile is new, but the internals of the sim may not be.
Can someone post a speedtest speeds result of their "LTE" speeds? My H+ speeds are very fast, so I don't know if there'll be much difference..

Just curious if anyone here has been cutoff by straight talk. I read the small print, and you are only unlimited on their web space. So technically they can cut you off if you use too much data.

Are you able to connect to LTE ? The best i can get on Rogers is H+ in Montreal, tried fiddling with the bands but nothing. I'm following this thread in the hopes that i could work to unlock the LTE bands.

Anyone got any other input/solutions/tricks ?
I'm on Koodo, and I get LTE.
Yeah LTE works fine on Rogers.
Sent from my Nexus 5
LTE on Bell. But the area I live in and the area I work in it jumps in and out of LTE and H+ but thats a stupid Bell issue.
It shows LTE on the icon on top ? Can you tell me what network type you have in the phone info *#*#4636&#*#* because i'm not getting LTE at all

Mine shows as: TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE
I'm getting lte on telus here in Vancouver. Are you using the international opo?
Yes i have the International version ( the one with cyanogen logo ) and i am on the TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE network ( thought i had changed it cause i played around in there ) very strange since Montreal has complete LTE coverage. Even the LTE discovery app doesn't see any signal and the Cellular Widget app either...

I feel like you have to go to "Access point names" and chose Rogers LTE there.... default isn't that...
I was getting low download speed prior to changing that. Still H+ logo though *shrug*
Then again, with my Rogers S3 I would never see the LTE icon either....
Edit: I'm getting LTE icon in some areas now
I just got my opo yesterday. Traded my G3 for it. Lol. It's worth half the price. Anyway, I have a device that doesn't say cyanogen on the back. I've read somewhere that it means it the Chinese 3g model. Anyway I'm in Montreal too, with fido and I get LTE just fine.
All I had to do was pop in my LTE SIM card and I was good to go. All apns were there and everything.
Whoa! Now that's LTE. Way faster than both, my s5 and my g3.

So? Have you managed to get LTE to work?

Brought a couple of OPO's to Canada for my friends and family members.
All working on Rogers with LTE, H+ and EDGE.
Just needed to set it to Rogers LTE in the APN as a few threads up stated and LTE was enabled.
Tested in these locations in Toronto:
- Downtown Toronto
- Markham
- Richmond Hill
- Vaughan
- Scarborough

Canadian OPO owners
Hello fellow Canadian OPO,
I will soon be joining the party, as I have just ordered this a day ago. How much was the final cost for you guys at the door. I have just ordered but I feel like us Canadians are getting ripped off with the taxes and import fees. If I were to resell this phone, would do you think the resale value would be? Thanks in advance my friends from the North.

My overall total with shipping, taxes, and exchange rate was 477CAD. I could have saved around $60 shipping it to a mailbox in the US and then driving down to pick it up, but I was lazy.

Oh I see. Do you still feel like the phone was a good buy, despite the exchange rate?
Definitely. I had placed an order for the htc m8 right before I heard about the OPO and that would have cost me near 800 after taxes and shipping. Even if this phone was priced like all the other flagship phones, I'd still pick this one. It's just a solid overall phone that has great battery life, easy to customize, top specs without gimmicks like dual cameras, finger and heart rate sensors. I used my last phone for over 4 years and it held up great and I'm planning for this phone to do the same.
