Roms for phones with Use External Sd like as Internal Memory..is dangerous & Bad Idea
Is a very Great Dangerous
I had a really bad experience.
Months ago, I unlocked boot my girlfriend Xperia J, no problems. Root, recovery etc...backup previous rom and later.... I tested moded stock roms like as Avd but no complete satisfaction. Later with boot unlocked, install Fijotour Rom, fast rom but problems with language and other applications... then finally decide Install last cianogen Mod 10 fpr J and backup again phone with cmw recovery and FlashtTool.... no problems. Al Ok system work without problems for 1 month + .
My girlfriend Sd Card is Samsung Sd Class10 64Gb , Yes work on J.
Then I saw, my girlfriend install a lot of games and aplicattions ... and ... phone slow....
Finally search for use External Sd Card as SdCard or Internal Sd Card, ok I found Youtube manuals and web manuals for change parameters on Archive in /system/etc ... I decide change and then...
Restart phone, init fine and I saw, on Storage, Phone Internal Memory, External Sd card as Internal Memory Storage, and read internal sdcard as only one sdcar... All Ok... great job!!!!.... BUT.........
In use phone then appears stopped aplicattion erros, "aplicattion finished, aplication stopped".... etc... I said... "hmmmm is posible corrupt flash for this change... is better I try go to Cmw recovery and wipe for erase possible corrupt bad data........ And yes I went to Cmw Recovery, wipe, and for better safe (I thinked), install Cianogen Mod 10 again and Gapps.... ok all ok... Cmw recovery confirm me flash sucessfull and gaps sucessfull too... remove batery and.......
Never init again. Pnone no led, no init, no charge. Hard Bricked. Only appears Quantum generic dispositive when connect to Pc... but no possible flash or recover it... Buyed external charge and two more batterys, charge 100% 3 batterys.... but nothing.... Phone Complete Dead. NO flash mode, no fastboot mode, no init, no leds... nothing.
Finally send phone to my phone company, (Phone had a 2 warranty years, and I only spent 1).... "Bricked for use bad software".... "No possible repair, need change motherboard Phone"... I respond, "Ok, is my fault, I will pay repair".... Finally they send to Sony and change motherboard and for cortesy Sony no claim me money, accept repair with warranty, no need pay for repair... great luck. Phone init, configure, but no attach networks... replaced motherboad is in not good condition, appears imei motherboad down. Then need send again phone, and finally months later, replace phone for complete. They send me New Xperia J phone.. "Hey man... remember, you broken phone for bad software"...
My girlfriend new phone has a boot with unlock option yes, but I prefer no unlock it. I want wait for finish warranty and then is possible, I will decide open boot and install Kitkat rooms.. I need now a stock modded rom with locked bootloader compatibility.
Then I selected rom for Xperia J AlienV6.
I install Doomlord root, and later super pro (I buyed time ago), install bat and later recovery archive with flashtool, power off phone init go to cmw recovery and install Alien V6 rom, later flash with Jb kernel 31 (i had a last Jb rom official).
All ok, extrange init... no apears menus... tutorial install fail... but finally I go to Settings. configure all, restart, again to settings, configure others, restart, and finish all ok...
Room is good at first time, fast and decent stable is not a Cm but is good... but I check in Storage Settings section and I look.... External SD Card as Internal!!!!!!........ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MORE RISKS!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!.
Please, new developers, remember, this a DANGEROUS option, please remove it for modded roms, No more bricks phones please.
I saw messages from moderatos and expert Developers, for not use this option in roms.... but people no listen.
I decide post this message for testimony, for advise to users. Risk for complete Dead brick phone is real with this option. I had luck, unlock my boot void warranty... but my phone company and Sony accept repair it in warranty for cortesy, only I say: "Thank you very much". If you bricked phone with this fail, needs replace phone motherboard.... and is possible you have pay repair or launch to trash your phone....
Thanks for your attention.
Greetings

Thanks for your testimony. This should be Sticky it's good warning.

I flashed many roms on xperia j, including cm10, avd, seraphic, doomsday, miui5 and alien with swapped sdcard. I dont get any problems at all.
If you want a custom rom, you can push stock vold.fstab.

Somebody give this guy a medal.
Seriously, switching memories (aka "vold.fstab trick") is a bad idea, best not to do it. Ever. Ever ever ever.

This needs to be a rule.
I've never had any problems with swapped external, but for some people it will work fine once, twice and then it might hardbrick.

I agree 100% with OP. The thing is that my own phone was bricked by vold.stab trick. The first time it worked like a charm , but then after much flashing, it got reset , then i did it again and it got hard bricked. Fortunately, Sony accepted the warranty and fixed it. Good guy, Sony xD thank you!

I don't think so
your fault I use alot of my phones with moded Vold.fstab maybe you moved other lines
the unique diference is vold change mount points in MNT not other you use diferent mount point to use on vold.
Vold not at fault because the vold does not touch anything on the system just does a redirect.
but it's okay to warn of something that could happen.I have years with this method and no drama
cheers,

The thing is, it's very easy to mess up.

Ok, I failed. but Normal instruccions for install new Rom say: "Wipe Data/cache"..
Sorry for delay on my response.
Ok, I failed. but Normal instruccions for install new Rom say: "Wipe Data/cache"..
And Wipe Data, Cache, dalvik, format only system win Modify vold.fstab for use external card as internal sdCard and Internal SdCard as external SdCard is = hard brick.
No all people in this forum and other Internet sites, knows that danger. I did not know. It cost the death of the phone.
I am a novice on Xda Developers, but I am no novice in computer/electronics. I am a technical.
I modify/repair for years, computers, computers components, Sat Decoders (I am builded and use Jtags), Consoles, Phones, etc...
But Murphy's Law says: Nobody is perfect. Nobody is infallible. We can all fail and make mistakes.
Like me, others broke down their phones. Hardware bricks. Not is a joke is a serious damage.
The risk is there. And it's a risk with very serious consequences for phones users .
The Xperia J hard brick can not be recovered, methods used in some phones to retrieve hard brick, not suitable for this model.
Thanks for attention.
Greetings.

[Q] Urgent help needed: can not delete/copy data and stuck at boot

Device: Nexus s (unbranded, bought from carphonewarehouse uk)
Rooted: yes
Rom: Ns Collab
I was going from London to Amsterdam and I switched on flight mode.... i was listening to mp3s and was using volume keys to skip tracks and suddenly it went silent. I tried everything to turn it on... didnt happen... it gets stuck at Google logo on boot....
fastboot was working but CWM was not... so used adb to push new CWM from CMD (win vista) .... mounted sd .... but since the last 8 hours or so...
I copy a new rom e.g. MIUI or the stock one or new NS Collab or Cyanogen mod ... it shows me its copied but if i try to install it it says... can't read (bad) ...
When i restart my old stuff is back (the old NS collab on root directory which i was using). If i flash that rom it again gets stuck on boot google logo....
I have tried formatting everything... from CWM but after formatting i restart and everything is still there.. tried formatting the sd from windows after mounting from CWM but it shows it is formatted, try copying something and installing same error and if i restart my old stuff is still there....
I am unable to write anythign to sd.. well it shows that it has copied but actually it doesnt and if you turn the phone off or restart it everything is there - old data ... no use...
IT SEEMS AS IF MY PHONE IS IN SOME KIND OF WRITE PROTECT MODE LOLZ.... BUT PLZ URGENT HELP NEEDED ... I AM UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING... I AM WILLING TO PAY ANYONE IF PERSONAL HELP IS GIVEN (i.e remote help through team viewer or skype)....

revertback that unlock the phone then try it again unlock.
I would say the best way is lock your bootloader, and unlock it again as it will wipe all the data
I tried the following:
1. lock (fastboot oem lock)
2. unlock (fastboot oem unlock)
Nothing hapenned...
Downloaded the original firmware from samfirmware.com, flashed it ... nothing hapenned... still there is a boot freeze at google's logo ...
I am going to try reflash with odin... wait its not working now... first time it did... now it says failure....
what should i do now???
does anyone have update.zip file of the original firmware whic could be flashed via fastboot????
trying to format sd card
Guys the lock / unlock did not reap dividends....
I tried formatting sd card from:
1. CWM but after a restart the data is still there....
2. From windows which includes:
a) Quick format &
b) Complete format
Both these formats, I mean all of these options did not succeed, from windows it says format unsuccessful...
I think the internal sd card of the phone is, i dunno, somehow write protected or somehow malfunctioned.... i dunno how this hapenned cuz i was listening to music when it hapenned and it it just froze.....(read my 1st post)
Guys, if there is an option remaining please tell me cuz i am going crazzzzzyyyyyy....aaaaaarrrrrrhhhhhhhhh!!!!
I have tried:
1. Odin flash ---> failure
2. Tried copying a new rom and tried installing ---> failure
3. Flashed 2 seperate versions of CWM (crespo's and the latest ) both did not work, mean; i was not able to succesfully copy a new rom and flash it, everything i copy does not stay there after restart, or if i try to install before restart it gives error.... ---> failure
4. Locked the fastboot and unlocked it (not once, several times)..... ---> failure
All of the above did not work... the root cause of the problem is that i cant write on sd which is some sort of write failure but doesnt says so....
IF I WERE TO RETURN THE PHONE TO SAMSUNG/GOOGLE WARRANTY CENTRE WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THERE IS NO OTHER OPTON LEFT ???
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot oem lock
Does this reinstates my warranty right???
i can upload all image files for u to flash in fasfboot mode, recovery, system, boot, cache, data have u tries all of these????
There is a simple thing - you need to flash your Phone with the Odin in the Download mode, not through CWM.
Its gonna delete completely everything, including SD Card and then gonna rewrite the NAND with the stock ROM.
Afterwards root your phone and flash custom ROM.
P.S. Here is the latest ROM with Odin for the I9020 - Samoled Version and here is the latest ROM with Odin for the I9023 Version with SLCD.
Search for a thread called "corrupt storage". Your nand flash may be corrupt. If so, even odin does not work. Luckily Samsung will replace your PBA (printed board assembly) for you that will include new nand memory, free of charge.
From reading your posts it seems like irishrally is right, you have a very common problem that some nexus s's have which a corrupt nand memory and it happens at the most random of times.
I have the same problem, the only why to fix it is take it back to samsung but i would recommend using odin first to return everything back to stock(i.e. lock bootoader, stock recovery).
They will replace your nand memory free of charge.
heres a few links that might help:

I hope your not like me and live in the country you bought the phone from, if you are, I'm sorry to say you need to find someone who does.. send to them to send it to samsung...samsung's BS policy

Thanks I will try that... I flashed with odin to stock rom... it succeeded but the phone didnt boot up and now if i retry to flash with odin it doesnt work... gives a failure. I am guessing that the first time sucess might have replaced the NS COllab rom to stock but I can't see it ... then i removed the CWM through fastboot and then locked the bootloader through Fastboot oem lock... Have i done everything right??? now can i give the phone to samsung???
BTW i bought the phone from london but i just moved to amsterdam on sunday... i will try here otherwise my friend is going to london next month then will have to wait for that
Yea that should be fine, I'm sure you can send it to Samsung Netherlands. I'm pretty sure the warranty is valid all over Europe. As long as your phone is the i9023(sLCD) model like they have in Netherlands, they'll fixed it.

hey sorry man,
Yea your only plan is London (i9020 was only released in England and USA). Look on the bright side, at least you can send it there and get it back soonish. I had to send mine to the states through a friend and I'll be getting it in 9 months when he returns again :/.
By the way most people say its takes 10-14 days before it gets fixed by samsung and sent back.

Can my Nexus be fixed?

Hello all
I suspect that either my Nexus has a hardware fault (internal memory) or I bricked it somehow.
For the past few weeks the phone has been getting stuck on the google boot screen quite a lot - It takes several attempts
to start up each time so I've been trying to keep the battery from running down.
The other day while I was attempting to switch roms I put the stock img on my SD card but when I went to flash it CWM
couldnt mount my (internal) SD Card. Senior forum member Caliban2 suggested that it could be my recovery so I installed CWM 6.0.0.7 non-touch using fastboot and, like magic, the phone started up -though I suspect this may have been luck.
I rebooted the phone out of curiosity and it got stuck on the google boot screen - no amount of battery pulling and restarting could coax
it back to life, so I went into CWM again to discover that it could not mount the SD Card, I was getting the 'cannot mount' and 'E:Unable to open ums lunfile(no such file or directory)' error messages. My windows 7 PC could see the phone but said that their was non memory inserted. Out of curiosity I installed CWM 5.0.2.0 but that produced the same results.
So now my phone appears dead, is the internal memory or something related to it is broken? I have seen things on here about using an unbricking tool in Debian Linux or flashing stock using odin but I confess that I have not tried these solutions and don't fully understand them (yet).I wussed out and dropped the phone into a local repair workshop, I imagine they will be trying these same steps themselves and they say it will take them a few days to get back to me.
My problem is that I need a phone for work and I gave my backup phone (HTC Hero) to my dad recently. Should I just take the plunge
and go out today and buy a new phone? Or is there a reasonable chance that these guys can fix my nexus s, or that I might be able to?
I'm a relative 'noob' at this so I thank you all for your advice in advance, it's much appreciated.
Derek
Do a search for flashing fastboot images. Download the 4.0.4 fastboot image from google and flash it as directed through fastboot. This may sort out your problems.
Afterward, if necessary, format the /sdcard too. I would do this afterward so that maybe you can get a backup of all the stuff on it before it's gone forever.
Thanks, will do. It's in the shop at the moment, I suspect this is probably what they're doing now.
Perhaps subconsciously I'm just looking for someone to tell me it's irreparable so I can rush out
and pick up a Galaxy Nexus.

Hey Harbb
Just wanted to give you an update on this, got it back from the shop who said they would need to send it to Samsung for a hardware repair, didn't expect it to work but fastbooted the stock bootloader, radio and image to the device and it's now working!
I've already moved onto a Galaxy Nexus on contract but at least now I can make a bit of money back off my old phone.
Thanks again for the advice

[Q] Gots to reset the phone

Hi guys and girls. Noob here with just enough knowledge to totally f stuff up. Any ways, I have a Galaxy S model sgh-t959v. I rooted it and installed Bionix rom from team whiskey. I used this one because at the time, it was the only one I could find that would actually load on the phone. I was probably trying to use the wrong roms or whatever. Any ways, I am now experienceing the low mem lvls and various problems. Basically I would like to start fresh and brand new, clear the phone completely and install a better rom. I did a seach on the forum and there are several posts on how to fix the low mem problem, but for some reason my phone wont reboot into a state taht I can install them from sd card. It only gives me the option to wipe data, no install from sd card. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and have a great new year.

use one click heimdall !

You have rooted your phone, so the first thing you should do, is get yourself a recovery (CWM or TWRP) and make a full system backup. That's important because you will have something to come back to in case you end up messing your phone.
Now, if you plan on installing ROMs based on stock, you can straight away use recovery to install them (the instructions for each ROM are given along with the ROM).
In case you want to install a custom ROM, aka something built from a source different from the stock like the Cyanogenmod or Paranoid or MIUI or something based off on them, you gotta first unlock bootloader. There are pretty nice tutorials for unlocking bootloader using flashtool.
That reminds me, always have a flashtool and ftf file for your phone handy. Flashtool always helps, as long as your hardware isn't damaged that is.
Now talking about risks: There are a lot, but I never faced any that made me lose my buddy.
1) Your motherboard may get fried. Don't worry, it happens 1 in 100 or maybe 1000.
2) Phone sometimes overheats.
3) During installation of a ROM, you may encounter an error and phone may go into bootlop (Go upto logo screen and be there forever). Backups and/or Flashtool comes to the rescue here.
4) Never flash a ROM with the memory swiped (internal -> external exchange). I have seen somewhere that it causes a hardbrick.
A hardbrick is when you gotta go to service centre. Your phone isn't going to start anymore.
A softbrick is when there's some problem with the software. You can fix it using flashtool or backups of recovery. Someone who keeps on switching ROMs (like me ) faces it a lot. Just follow all steps and you will be alright.
In the end, luck has some contribution too

Not really, at least on my J - I've been flashing few roms like this and everything is fine. The only thing worth mentioning is that cwm isn't tricked by memory swap, so backups and roms should be on external in it.

Oh well, good for you. I have tipo, but I never tried it. I was just mentioning it because the one who said that was pretty confident about it. You know its better to warn than to mourn (I know they don't rhyme),

Galaxy S5 Clone almost dead (OS damaged) and I can't flash. Help!

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name's Rafael and this is my 1st post in this forum. I hope humbly that you can to help me with the problem that I'll show you then:
Well. To begin, the issue is this... I am working with a telephone that's not mine. Somebody sent it to me to fix it, they said me that the phone doesn't download more apps because of "full memory". When I checked it, apparently it had the internal memory partitioned incorrectly, it said it was 16gb total storage with 7 GB available, but when I was installing some apps and went back to see the memory, it showed the Available Storage Memory with a large negative number, and it wasn't letting me install more apps. Some of the features of the phone are the following (according to MTK Droid Tools):
MTK6589 <---------(Actually it's MTK6571)
Model Name: Galaxy S5
Android Version: 4.4.4 <---------(Questionable)
Model Number: SM-G900H
Base Band: G900HXXU1ANCE
Then, to see if I could make some change, I decided to install a custom ROM, apparently for MTK6589 (at that time I didn't suspect about the horrible phone's falsehood). I wanted to see if this ROM brought the partition configured correctly. I tried to carry out the installation by the CWM Recovery from SD card. It turned out that the installation did not exceed 10% and it froze there. Then I removed the battery of the phone and inserted it again. When I try to turn it back on, it stays on the screen Mediatek. And from there, it does absolutely nothing more.
I've tried to flash back the backup that I made to the phone with MTK Droid Tools, both version 5 of SP Flash Tool as version 3, but I'm still not achieving positive results, always it throws me errors errors and more errors . I've searched all over the web, compatible ROMs for this phone, but apparently there is not anything. The only way in which (at least) it begins to flash from SPFT v5, is loading a ROM MTK6571; if not, it only throws errors. However, I've already tried, but it gave me error. It appears when the yellow bar that says Download Flash reaches 3%, and then it throws the error.
The only possible solution I see is to make a ROM (from the backup I made to the phone with MTK Droid Tools before to **** it up) installable from recovery (CWM) that is the only thing that works relatively well. And I have not reached that conclusion alone, but in bilateral agreement with an expert from another forum with who I have almost a month discussing the issue.
I really need help buddies. I am desperate because I'm a bit under pressure because I have almost a month with the phone without achieving the desired results. :crying:
Greetings and thanks in advance to any of you who want to help me.
PD: Sorry for my bad English if I committed mistakes.

Do NOT do this. None of them will work.
Your issue is that 99% of the time clones dont not have the software they claim and are never made by the company they claim they are. You could try porting a rom over that has the same chip but ill be honest. XDA doesnt really do anything with cheap knock off devices. Most people avoid them like the plague.
Sorry for my previous post..... I didn't read carefully. It's not s5 its clone....
Another way...

I was thinking about to take system.ubifs.tar and boot.img from the backup, to turn it into a bootable (installable) ROM from the recovery. Is it somehow possible?

Best advise is that you can try. Like I said we dont deal with clones at all really.
Worst thing that will happen is that it wont work and you learned a lesson about clone devices.
