I have a Droid Incredible Rooted using Unrevoked forever with S-Off. I have been running CM 6.0.2 for a while now and had an issue the other day with my SD card. The card died and when I put a new card in the phone got stuck in a boot loop. I tried reflashing CM 6.0.2 and gapps but I continue to get the same boot loop. I understand that you need to wipe all data but when I atempt to wipe the Dalvik Cache I get the the following message "E:Can't mount /dev/block/ (File Found)" what do I need to do to fix this. I have no phone right now and have become extremely dependent on using it for everything from GPS to MP3 player in my daily life so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read some posts suggesting running logcat to find what error I am getting during the bootloop that is happening, but I have no idea how to do that. I think the main issue is that I cannot do a full wipe before flashing the ROM.
Please help! I don't want to chalk this up to a bricked device, but I won't be able to hold out much longer since I have to travel this weekend.
First of all, do not double post. It just clutters up the forums.
Second, you need to post this in the Droid Incredible forum or at the VERY LEAST, the Android Q&A forum. I'm not sure why people took the time to create all of the different forums around here if you guys are not even going to use them.
I'm just taking a shot in the dark here based on my experience flashing older Android phones. So do not tell me I'm wrong, AGAIN this is just an option to try:
Just boot into recovery and do a factory reset on the phone. AGAIN, I'm just going on what I CAN REMEMBER here. Use the hboot menu try a restore. Load a factory ROM onto the SD card (using your PC) and the flash it.
I don't know man, maybe I'm wrong about all of this. FACT is that I've had NUMEROUS phones that were in the same shape you are in right now and after google searching, a little common sense and READING I was able to fix the issues. There is a way to go back to your FACTORY ROM but I'm not going to waste my time doing the research for you here, it's your phone and you have access to the same information all of us do.

I assume you meant "(File NOT Found)". You are trying wipe data off of a NEW SD Card here. How do you expect it to wipe files that are not even there to start with? Make sure your battery is fully charged before doing anything with the phone also. You might think that sounds like it has nothing to do with your problem BUT it can cause boot loops on SOME devices (android and others). Reset to factory from hboot menu. SKIP THE WIPE ALL PART BECAUSE YOU HAVE A NEW SD CARD. Just get back into your phone running Android and then you can redo everything from there.

Sorry for posting in the wrong thread, perhaps a mod could move this to a more resonable place for this question. I'm not trying to clog anythining up. If that isn't an option I'll just create a new thread over there, but like you said that would just be clutter.
First: I did not mean (File NOT Found) the error says (File Found), seems like an odd error on a Formated SD Card that is why I mentioned it.
Second: I tried going to a stock ROM and it would not flash to the device I think it was looking for the previous official ROM that was relesed for the phone and would not install since that did not exist. The one that I downloaded was when Verizon pushed FroYo for the DInc, perhaps I can find one that supports a different upgrade path.
After trying all logical steps, google searches and reading many thread regarding people who have been stuck in this situation I was not able to find anything that was helping me restore my phone, that is why i started a new thread.

I'm shooting in the dark here but have you tried flashing Clockwork again? Just putting the .zip on the new SDCARD and flashing it? I'm sorry man, I've searched and tried to come up with a good answer but I've not found THAT much. Post in the Incredible forum would probably get your problem solved. I'm not sure that there is much of a difference between deviceds when it comes to recovery but I'm sure that you will get more accurate answer over there, even in the Android section.

Anyway, I was hoping that I could get a step by step procedure on how to root my phone and install a custom ROM.
The issue is, my KIES doesn't work (so help me with that also please) and moreover, I'm very new to all this so I don't quite get a few things.
Also, please tell me what are the best ROMs out there and if something does go wrong in the process, how do I un-brick my phone?
So I'm looking for active replies / repliers since I know I'll have a bunch of questions during the process.
Last, when I go to "about phone" on my phone it says "firmware version 2.2", but the little that I've looked up, people run 2.2.1. Does this mean my rooting process is different?

custom rom - pick a custom rom and follow instruction in that thread.
Your phone is already updated to 2.2 and that is the reason why kies doesn't show new updates. Our phone has 2.2 and not 2.2.1
If you use roms which doesnt have boot then it will not get hard bricked. soft brick can be fixed by reflashing.
What is the exact issue you are facing while using kies? Try a uninstall and reinstall. That should fix it

So I don't really know what the best custom ROM is out there. could you suggest one? one that is fast (speed is really the priority), and not buggy, supports the apps that the stock ROM should. I'm willing to try three-four, so give me the names of the best ones out there.

What do you mean it doesn't have a boot?
Well to figure out best ROm you will have to read up on each ROm. Each of them have separate thread where initial posts describe the properties of ROm. There are ROm comparison threads out there but that is just summary. I cant give you best choices. Everybody has different taste. Start with more popular ones, whose threads have more posts. More post -> more popular.
You can root using z4root.
Custom ROM are pre rooted normally so you need not root your phone before flashing custom rom

if speed is a prime consideration then i would suggest kyrillos rom..... fastest rom i ever used....... very less buggy.......
you can also flash lestatious rom..... it is damn fast and surprisingly stable!.....
and check dharam's rom collection too....... i'm using his ultra clean ultimate rom right now..... and it's good although since you are new i would recommend flashing a different rom from his collection.....
As for rooting.... you don't need to root before flashing a custom rom....
And in case you need any information about any of the features or anything.... just post it here ....... i'lll try to help you in whatever way i can.,.....

Hey i would suggest u to go for Indroid 4.3. I m using this and have seen many users jumping from lestatious and kyrollis to indroid.
As a begginer, u will also get many help in Indroid thread.
Z4root doesnt work in Froyo, if u wanna root, choose superone click.
U dont need kies to work, Use Odin to flash ur fone.
Make sure to learn processes better by reading through forums, if u dont wanna brick ur fone.
Hey!! I would suggest Indroid 4.3 or Kyrillos 5.6. They are fast as hey have lagfix.
And no you don t have to root your phone before installing a custom ROM. But if you want to root, use superoneclick to root.
And as for bricking, you can avoid hard brick by installing a ROM that does not have bootloader. Bootloader is a piece of code that runs before any operating system starts. So you should avoid flashing bootloader.
As for soft bricks, you can just reflash to come out of the soft brick.
okay so i was doing a bit of reading up and i realised the following :
1)First i need to download :
a) Odin (please post version number i have to get for my i5801 (or is it just one thing for all phones?) or a link please.)
b) some backup software. now i downloaded titanium backup, but it won't open because it says my phone is not rooted. so help me go about this.
c) a custom ROM. I think i'll start off with kyrillos rom since i've been told it's the fastest and very less buggy. i'll then move on to Dharam's ROM if i don't like kyrillos rom because Dharam seems to be a very active user, and quite friendly, and i feel he can solve the issues well. after that i'll try Indroid.
d) I also need superone click.
Question : Where do i download these? directly on my phone or on my computer?
2) I can increase my internal storage by partitioning a part of my SD card. Now I have a 4 GB SD card and i barely use it, so i don't mind giving upto 1GB of it. Please suggest the perfect amount. whether 1GB will be too much, or whether 500MB would be too less.
3) some apps do not work with custom ROMs. The app that i really want is 4shared. It's working currently on my phone with the stock ROM, so if someone can check if that will also work on the three ROMs that i mentioned.
4) soft bricking isn't much of an issue, but it's better i avoid it. so can someone give me a rather up-to-date guide (or link) on rooting, because the other ones are REALLY old. at least 4-5 months old and there have been some updates after that.
5) I can also overclock my phone. And from what I read up, SetCPU seems compatible with the above ROMs. And after flashing my phone with a custom ROM, my phone is automatically rooted. Correct me if I am wrong.

As for the backup software, Titanium backup is the best out there. As it can backup all the apps and all the settings. Yes you have to be rooted. So root and use.

Yes. Kyrillos is a good ROM. As it is prelagfixed and offer good internal memory as well after you partition your SD. Sizes, 512 MB ext4 and 128 MB linux swap. Rest of the memory you can use for storage.
As far as overclocking is concerned, in Kyrillos, you again have to flash a new kernel if you want OC.
And for the flash problem, only adobe can solve that problem.
And oh yes, most of the custom roms are prerooted. So after flashin you don t have to root again.

The rom is downloaded on your pc and flashed through it using odin.
I don't know any apps that work on stock rom and not on custom rom..... and 4shared works on kyrillos and indroid..... i've used it myself..
Most custom roms are already rooted and setcpu is the best app for setting CPU frequencies.
And as you said flash player isn't compatible with armv6 processors like ours.... so unless adobe makes it compatible no custom rom can do anything.
and for downloading youtube videos i'll suggest an app called you tube downloader or tube-X.......

One question however, More and more I read about "kernel"(eg to get the 1% battery thing).
I know the kernel is the core of the operating system, but I don't understand how to use/apply it on my phone. Is the kernel something I have to flash separatly from the Rom, or is it included in the Rom?
If you need to install / flash it seperatly, where can I find the different kernels, and which one is recommended for my phone (Samsung Galaxy 3 Apollo)?

The kernel is included in the ROM itself. There are different kernels with different functionalities. For eg : - Most of the kernel that come with the ROMS are non-OC. So, if you want to overclock you phone, you have to flash the required kernel after flashing the ROM. The procedure is same using ODIN. Here s the link to the kernels.

if u have any other launcher like adw then go to settings > application > Adw launcher (for example) and press clear default.
Then press the home key, It should ask u to set detault launcher. Just click on the checkbox below and select touchwiz launcher.

1st step done successfully...congo...welcome to this amazing world.
I would suggest, go for indroid but follow all the steps properly and read the forums for all the problems.
and yeah we also get awesome themes and more memory /system!!
custom roms are faster with better battery backup.
currently on indroid 6!!
Recently my girlfriend and I wanted to upgrade her T-Mobile galaxy s 4g to a gingerbread custom Rom. we first flashed clockwork mod and a froyo custom rom, then decided to flash "Audiophile gingerbread 2.3.4" and completely looked over the instructions that said to first flash bootloaders. I have had problems flashing my g2x and our hd2's in the past but thought that as long as I could get into CWM I would be fine, not true without proper bootloaders I guess. now the SGS4g will start up but after the "galaxy s 4g exclusively by T-Mobile screen" it does the bill Cosby sweater thing and starts up normal. but after five seconds or so, soft reboots and keeps looping like that. I'm pretty sure I need to Odin flash but don't know exactly what rom or file and I am having a lot of trouble getting into download mode and getting windows to read the phone. I have ran the Samsung driver software already...any ideas? any info needed?
You're getting that rainbow because you are still on froyo bootloader. Search for FB's EXT4 conversion guide. It has all the info you need to fix your issues. Also try the new AUDIOPHILE FTW ROM. It just allowed me to convert to EXT4 without the partition. So you can probablly skip that step once you get the right bootloaders.
If Odin gives you issues keep trying eventually it will see the phone!

follow fb's guide as hes part of team acid and does find nice ways to try n ease some of the gb clutter u have to go though and we do implment as much of what he does into our roms as we can ... but case u still do have issues u do have his methoods as a backup case stuff goes wrong..

I am having a lot of trouble getting the phone into download mode. do you know if without the g.b. bootloaders if download mode shows up normal or does it have the bill Cosby sweater look to it also? Is there a trick to getting into download mode that you guys use? I have tried I think all methods that I've found online. is there another option if you can't get into download mode...? thanks guys, working on this problem more today, will post results.
Odin will still pick up your phone in Bill Cosby mode.
If you haven't already load up odin with the proper files in the proper places.
Pull battery out of phone.
plug phone and usb into computer
hold down volume up and down
put in battery.
Odin should see the phone.
If not repeat with different usb port.
Keep tryin it will see it eventually

Thank you so much. Your method for getting into download mode worked flawlessly the very first time and every other time. The guide you guys directed me to looked and sounded like alot of work, but when all said and done it took less than a half hour after downloading files. The directions were very simple and easy to follow. Thank you very much! Your help made for a very happy girlfriend . I have one final question...When i got to (Step 11) in CWM it said, "E:Cant mount/ sdcard, and/or damaged sdcard." Q: Can she just use the present ROM (she likes it) without installing busybox? What are the pros and cons to not doing this? I did follow the partition sdcard instructions on a 2GB sandisk. Is there an easy way to fix the card? Thank you again for all your help.
If you don't install busybox there's a very high chance that you won't be able to use the voodoo lagfix which converts your phone's partitions to ext4 instead of rfs, giving you a performance boost.
Have you tried another SD card? Did you format your SD card according to the prerequisites?
Hey guys i have a few questions!
Firstly im new to G2x flashing, and android flashing in general. I used to own a Samsung Captivate (which was so simple to flash! one click stock odin > root > rom manager> flash clockworkmod > reboot > install rom) i've been reading around and i honestly dont understand the guides on how to flash. Also has anyone with WIND Optimus 2x sucessfully flashed CM 7.1? If so do you notice better reception? better battery life? better performance? IS it worth it to flash?
Can someone please make a step by step guide on how to flash WIND Optimus 2x, for noobs (like me) i see there are many and it's just confusing! i dont want to brick my phone, its been a week since ive had it, and the only problem i noticed is at night school i dont get reception (even though on wind's website its covered there), and the battery life is poor. Anyways please help me im eager to install cyanogenmod, but am afraid at the same time of bricking my device. THanks for reading my thread!

And then boot into recovery by holding down power + volume down. Backup your current rom and then install the rom of your choice. You need a physical sd card in the phone to backup the rom.

That takes care of rooting+flashing. Don't worry, you can't easily brick this thing.

Think about it. You're backing something up onto itself. You'll be making backups of backups. If you insist, just search for it, there's a way to change the mount moints. We do have to nvflash, I forgot to mention that, my bad. NVFLASH is very easy, you can't brick with it.
it is indeed very difficult to brick this phone. the only time it happens is when u are doing a recovery in clockwork, and pull the battery out in the middle.
but then you pull the battery, enter into the actual recovery using your computer.

So at the moment my HTC sensation is running CM9 stable and although it's great and I'm not actually having any stability issues, the problem that is still making me keep an eye out for other roms is the fact that I always get poor battery life. No more than 2 hours screen time, ever. Even if I don't use the phone that much, the battery won't last longer than 18-20 hours.
I tend to use my phone quite alot for things like whatsapp, twitter, news, browsing, phone calls the most but when I was on CM7 my phone would easily last the whole day plus a little longer.
Although I think CM roms are great (they're the only one's I've ever used!) I do want to start venturing out of my comfort zone if it means I can have a pure naked stock android rom (I think this is referred to as AOSP?). I'm not interested in sense or any launchers etc, I like how CM lets me customise the number of home pages I have (I have set it to 2!) and would like to keep this simplicity going.
Can you great folks please let me know what you would do if you were in my shoes? Are there any other roms out there that will give me nothing but AOSP android on ICS (or JB) with the added bonus of stability and a good battery life.

Is there any reason you cannot test it for yourself? It is the only way YOU will find out what suits YOU
ICS AOSP ROMs are AOKP/CM9, JB ROMs are ParanoidAndroid/CM etc etc, just look through the dev section
Hi Jonny, thanks for the response. The simple answer is because I'm not experienced enough to try and install different sorts of roms onto my phone. Both times I did in the past (CM7 and CM9) I made errors and it ended up taking quite long to carry out what seems to be a straightforward task for most people.
So I thought I would ask everyone else where they would go from here rather than risking ruining my phone further! (to be honest I look through the rom section of this forum everyday and the options available are so vast, and to be honest quite overwhelming.

I agree with Jonny, it's a very personal thing and what might be perfect for me, might be awful for you because it's only opinion. So please always test out for yourself the different roms and if you need help we can help you then you will better learn the procedures for flashing also learn how to get yourself out of trouble in a pinch . I learned these things myself by trial and error and the experimentation is the fun part! That said I prefer ICS and use viper. However once again you really need to try it out for yourself to see if it suits you! If you have any questions about changing roms I and others are happy to help you out.so please why are you not comfortable flashing new roms? How can I help you?what I do is (im s-off) I put the Rom to the root of my sd card. I download from my computer and use my USB to transfer the Rom using my phone as a removable disk drive. Once it's downloaded I boot into recovery, I wipe cash, wipe dalvik cash, wipe data factory reset.then press download to sd card, choose file from sd (this is your Rom), install, reboot and your done. Hope this helps out some. Any questions and I'm happy to help you!

How can I help you?what I do is (im s-off) I put the Rom to the root of my sd card. I download from my computer and use my USB to transfer the Rom using my phone as a removable disk drive. Once it's downloaded I boot into recovery, I wipe cash, wipe dalvik cash, wipe data factory reset.then press download to sd card, choose file from sd (this is your Rom), install, reboot and your done. Yeh I figured out that I need to put the rom and gapps on the root of the SD card and then I reboot into recovery, wipe the phone totally and then install from sd card the rom and gapps.
The parts that confuse and worry me are:
- some roms say you don't need to wipe stuff if you're coming from certain roms etc, where as other roms say you have to do a total wipe using things like '4ext' - now i know i sound like a total dumb ass here but is 4ext some sort of app that you can download an apk for and install onto your phone and then it allows you to wipe your phone or something?
- i still don't quite get the deal with different firmware versions, how do i know what firmware version i'm using at the moment? what's the difference between them?!
- kernels... i don't quite get how to use a different one, where to obtain them from if i need a certain one for a certain rom!
because of work/general life commitments (just like everyone else i suppose) i don't quite get enough time to read up on everything to be able to gain the confidence to play around.
i wish i was a student again when i had more time to do this stuff (in those days though the iphone was the popular option and i was a right god when it came to jailbreaking and unlocking etc) #goodtimes
Here goes:
preramble your android has an internal nand disk that is partitioned see this explanation Here Read that before you go on
generally when installing a new rom you must wipe all partitions but if you are s on you will not be able to access the radio or boot partitions easily.
this is a problem since generally the rom will come with a kernel already and this goes in the boot partition, luckily 4ext smart flash has you covered.
what is 4ext? 4ext is a recovery program. When you power on you android phone the first thing that happens is your bootloader fires up and by default it launches android, but remember the bootoader comes first, it is a very simple program (notice no touch screen) that just allows you to choose what to boot into. when you press vol down and the power button it tells the phone to stop in the bootloader and let you choose to do something else rather than booting into android. this is like going into the bios on a pc if youve done that.
ok so were in the bootloader and we want to load the recovery program. This is NOT android at all is a completely separate thing that has COMPLETE control over your device. Android OS protects your stuff but this doesnt. android by default comes with a basic recovery but 4ext is an advanced once that has many extra features including touch support.
Right i assume you have 4ext installed if not look up how to do that otherwise we will be here all day. (hint you will need to flash it from your computer)
like i said the bootloader is a separate program to android and can wipe all your data and install a new rom. there are lots of guides explaining this so ill let you find one. if you are s on (you find out at the boot loader screen) you must go into tools and enable 4ext smart flash, this allows you to access the boot partition and install your new kernel. if you are s off it doesnt matter the boot partition is available to you.
dw about firmware its quite a confusing concept, to find out your version got to settings about phone, but its almost certainly 3.32.
dont worry about kernals either the rom will come with one, just make sure you enable smart flash if your s on.
once you flash your first rom they all the same process.
