Improving viewing angles for Locked Bootloaders - Xperia Z1 Themes and Apps

Hey guys!
Good news for those ones who have locked bootloaders! Install this app: Screen Filter
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
It works with White Balance and can improve screen viewing angles! No need custom ROM, specific Kernel or Root!
Try it!
Thumbs up for the developers of Haxor!
Just remember that the app works like as gamma control of DoomKernel, which also tends to darken the display.. Just see my other thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2710684
Cheers!

This is just wrong -.-
It's a screen dimmer just because when you dim your screen you can see some stuff better at an angle doesn't mean that you improved viewing angels
Doesn't work.

So, you say that "you can see some stuff better at an angle", doesn't that literally mean "improved viewing angles", which essential IS seeing things better at an angle?
Yes I think dimming the screen is not such a great solution, but better than nothing. Technically, it does improve viewing angles to an extent.

The brightness level can be adjusted in the application, so that does not become so dark, you have tested?
For those who have the locked bootloader is a breakthrough yes! I invite people to test.
Cheers!

Not really a breakthough, I used this app about a year ago. Its nothing amazing...It just dims the screen, ideal if you use your phone as alarm clock in a dock and you cant dim the screen enough with the native brightness control. But that's it
And unsure why you think this is a breakthough for locked bootloaders. The app is compatible with android 1.6+ and has never needed an unlocked bootloader to work

This application works like this that was shown in the video of Anirudh Srinivas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PqJYw8ci6c
For me, it works better because it works on all display, including in the softkey area.
Cheers

What im trying to say is
Dimmed Angle is better when Dimmed
But Bright Angle is better than Dimmed Angle

The intent was to help people who do not want to unlock the bootloader. It is quite obvious that the app works for both Locked or unlocked bootloaders, needless to say. Let the people test.
Not everyone knows the application or have tried something like that, and not everyone here is a developers or advanced users.
I tested the app, liked and saw some improvement in the display.
Let's be more friendly here and less kicking in the colleagues ass ok?

Sorry, not having a go..just wondering why this was meant ot be a breakthough
Of course people can test themselves

Agreed....
It allows you to lower the brightness more than normal, WOW what a breakthrough.....
The viewing angles issue is a hardware one, sorry but lowering the brightness is not solving anything. The issue is using crappy tft technology. That being said it is still miles ahead of the original xperia z, the display on that was so bad I got rid of it after about a week.

Adjusting the colors of the display?

Is there a way to adjust the colors of the Xoom's screen? I'm pretty disappointed at how photos look white washed on the Xoom as compared to other tablets. The Galaxy 10.1's screen seem over saturated but their Touch Wiz update provided them a way to choose a setting which was more natural. I was thinking if they can do it through the software then maybe there is a way to better the colors of the Xoom's display.
I have xoom too, I agree with you, display is dull. How can we increase amount of brightness?

Some of you guys got the not so wonderful screen...I'm sorry. These's an app called Color Filter Settings in the Market that might help. Also Screen Filter might be of some use, but it doesn't increase brightness.
Thanks okantomi.
I've always wondered why someone doesn't make an app that allows us to modified the colors like gamma, Brightness, Contrast, saturation, etc. It could make any device look great.. maybe allow presets and stuff.

Hi there okantomi !
May I ask who's the manufacturer for your display and if any infos about the specs for that ? Part number will help a lot.
I'm afraid not only "some" of us but actually "many" of us have this crappy washed screen from AIO which drives me nuts for how bad it is.
Since I'm not the only one with these problems and AFAIK Motorola is aware of this I really don't get it why they don't even bother to release a firmware fix or at least create an App to let us playing with colors and contrast adjustments to increase a little bit the appearance on our screens.
Thanks for any replies.

I only recently checked and found that I have the Sharp screen, luckily without any bleed. My screen is great, but I'm not sure it's as easy as Sharp vs. AUO, because a lot of people swear by the AUO screen, like our moderator. I agree that there should be a fix available, because it's the one thing that's most consistently complained about by people with low contrast screens.
Thank you so much for your reply. I'm pretty sure that SHARP screens are much better than AUO ones based on their experience and history with this kind of stuff. I'm aware about those bleeding problems about some of them however I would preffer one with some bleeding instead this one with such a poor visibility and so washed. If you tilt the screen just slightly (few degrees) everything goes washed and color saturation drops a lot. What can I say..it's a real nightmare to watch this.
I like the overall appearance and features for this tablet, this is the reason I'm still looking for any solution to improve somehow the quality of viewing.
If any chance to get the part number from your unit I will appreciate your effort a lot.
Thanks again.
PS...about others with AUO screens and no major complaints...it looks like some of them are upgraded versions already (the latest XOOMS), so maybe that's the reason for not so many complains with them

I don't know the part number. Have you tried contacting Motorola to see if they could upgrade your screen or at least give you some information /options?
You might want to try that Screen Filter app. I think it could help you, especially with your viewing angles.

[Q] app to increase max brightness on transformer

hi, unlike a lot of android users i dont have issues with my battery life. so one day i thought about my eeepc i have and recall that i have an app that has a feature to actually make my screen brighter. so its like: low-mid-max-ultra, when ultra makes like an 120% of the screen bright.
so ive started searching for that on android but with no success. anyone know some app that will make transformer screen even brighter then max brightness?
cause i can really use that outdoor, as we all know its very difficult seeing something with direct sunlight, more like impossible.
thanx by advance
I do not see why you would want the screen any brighter. even in full sunlight with the screen brightness setting on auto I can read the screen very well. far better than my laptop.

+1 I dont have any problems with sunlight here the screen is bright enough
I don't know if such a thin exists.
My guess is no.
wierd. well maybe its because i have a matte screen protector, although i dont remember been any different without it. anyways, i think it'll be nice to have the ability to brighten it even more because i think that we still not Exercising this ips panel full potential.
but thats only me...
Look into an app called "Lux (Beta)". I know it lets you get dimmer than stock - not sure about brigter (ask the dev - he's very responsive). Tons of other features as well. It does costs $.99, but well worth it, in my opinion - my auto-brightness now actually works!
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I know this is a slightly old topic but I wonder if anyone found a working (and not too dangerous) way to increase the max. brightness?
look for an app called "Display brightness" by RubberBigPepper.
According to the Android developers guide, the brightness is adjustable from 0 to 255, so it's possible.

Is the screen resolution really that bad?

I'm hearing really negative reviews on the tab plus screen resolution as it's not great outside in the sun and it is unbearable. Is this true? Do you guys believe the screen resolution to be really that bad? Thanks.
The screen resolution has absolutely nothing to do with sunlight readability so I don't really understand what you mean here

Don't know if it's against the rules but one was from Cnet. Another user was talking about it as well. Don't flame me, i'm just trying to see if it's all hogwash per say because i'm really considering getting a galaxy tab plus.
the resolution is fine for my eyes. I don't quite get what all the hype about resolution is these days... My computer monitor is around 100ppi... Why do I need a tablet or phone that has 400ppi?
What about the brightness level. That's the issue I've heard some things about. People are saying that the GT+ is very dim and difficult to see outside.

I can't comment on that, really. 99% of my usage is indoors, and I might have to wait until May before there's another sunny day where I live. Then again, the only tablet-like devices I've ever seen that are actually good in the sun are e-ink devices (kindle touch, nook touch, etc)

Again, some sources for where this brightness issue is coming from would certainly shed some light (excuse the pun)?
I have to agree with garyd9 here. My tablet lives indoors most of the time. The few times I've been outdoors with it I was able to crank up the brightness to where I had no issue with seeing the screen. Typically I leave the brightness set between 20-35% indoors and occasionally to as high as 45-50% depending on the light in the room. In full dark I run it to minimum as its too bright. Maximum is insanely bright and I can't imagine many scenerios where I would need it to be that bright.
It should be noted that I don't use the auto brightness as it is wholly inadequate for the purpose. I imagine that users who are complaining of dim screens are relying on the auto brightness feature and not adjusting the brightness manually. Overall I find the tablets brightness to be more than capable of handling the job.

You may also consider checking out the tablet in the store if possible. Stores are usually very well lit inside and should give you an excellent idea of the tablet's display capabilities.
For future reference so there's no confusion: your initial post contained contradictory information. You were asking about screen resolution when you really meant brightness. Which, as captnodegard pointed out, are two completely different things. It's helpful to use the correct terms when asking for advice. It's also best to cite sources when referring to other critical reviews, as some people may not have seen those reviews.
Good luck in your decision!

THIS TAB SUCKS!!!! (I'm referring to Ainol's Novo7 Tablet. haha).
Anyways, I have a lot of experience using the GT+ outdoors since i always bring it with me in my college. Most of the times i use it outdoors when the sun is in its full glory. I have a matte screen protector which is why sun reflection is not an issue. However, I have to increase the brightness to 80% just so that i can have a pleasant view on the screen. 60% brightness is usable but I love the colors when I'm using it with 80%.
I also notice that the back gets hot whenever i turn FULL brightness on. Which is why, i capped myself to only increase brightness to 80%.
However, I live in the Philippines where a 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) is normal which could have contributed to the back heating up.
In my opinion, the screen brightness was too dim. Particularly in auto brightness. Compared to my Sony s and htc flyer, I wasn't impressed. Selling mine because of this and other disappointments.

What "other disappointments"? Just curious.
I routinely use the tab as a TV in the car during traffic on my commute and if the sun is behind me then its essentially unwatchable at 100% brightness but aside from that it works fairly well.
I don't know how well it stacks up against other 7'' offerings except the Nook Tablet which I had tried out first in my hunt for 720p playback and the two seem similar in screen brightness.
I have noticed the 7+ does not feel as bright as my 10.1 but overall it works well enough outdoors and no screen except e-ink really works well in direct sunlight anyway.
I back up that last claim with testing done on:
Galaxy S and S II
iPhone 4 and 4S
iPad 1 and 2
Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 7+
The time I tried to use my laptop outside after I said "Gee it sure is nice outside"

The inability to customise mini apps, disappointing. This is available on 7.7. Also, the peel application is unable to control several of my devices...e.g. found no support for VCR. Found Sony S much better for this. Poor position of power button allows frequent accidental activation whilst working with device. I admit latter point could be due to my own clumsiness

Auto contrast-like behaviour even when auto brightness is turned off

Here's something odd I have noticed with the screen.
Whenever I use the phone in direct sunlight or in bright lighting, the contrast of the screen will rise to oddly high levels. While having black colours on the screen I can clearly notice this contrast change. I've turned off auto brightness, but I have no idea how I could disable this "auto contrast" function.
Is this something Sony has purposely done to help the screens readability in bright lighting or is there something wrong with my device? Have you guys experienced this?
This has been happening on my Z3+ and Z5 Premium and I hate how it looks! Lux use to fix it but doesn't seem to work on this phone
Yup even I have this issue I don't understand why it happens
That's Qualcomms Assertive Display.

It's just another piece of technological fluff being thrust on us without our permission to supposedly fill a need that doesn't exist!
Quite frankly I am getting sick-and-tired of paying major $$$$ for a tool that may stop working as expected ( and needed ) just because of the latest update/patch. Now we are getting buggy crap built into the hardware itself! This has to STOP!

It's not a bug though, and works very well...
The whole idea is to max out the brightness, and increase the contrast to make things easier to see on the screen. It's so good, you can see text in direct sunlight because of this this technology.
It's also seen on high end laptops and iPads, too (I believe), but I've never seen it work as fast than the XZ P, it's really amazing, and well done to Qualcomm for developing it.
So calm down. It's a great usability feature that benefits everyone and has zero drawbacks. (You can't expecting to see perfect colours and contrast when you are standing in bright, sunny conditions)

Huh?? I'm so confused.... This is not the Z4 or Z5P we are talking about here.
How are the colours getting washed out to a point of no return? This is XZ Premium, and this tech has been built in and put on the spec sheets. It certainly doesn't seem like a bug, and if they ever removed it then that would be a step backwards.

Well I personally dislike it. You have some great points I cant fault. They all explain the pros of the feature. I just dislike it because blacks become grey. Thats what annoys me like they become very grey. It looks horrible. Thats something I will fault in terms of the feature. That irritates me when I see jagged text and super-bright greys in my quick settings panel. This shouldnt occur.
I used my Z2 with the brightness low and I used kcal to reduce it even more, I could still visibly see the display under sunlight, where I couldnt id just shield it away.
Yeah its not a bad feature but its not a good one either. Best thing is if they came up with a way to toggle it on and off. I remeber on my Z4 tablet when the sun would shine through the window it would activate the feature. At least it isnt this sensitive with the XZP, my Z4 tablet was on marshmallow back then though.
If this feature were to be toggled by the user under display settings then id understand its usage more. At the moment we have no choice but to use it. Were forced to use qualcomms feature the majority of us dont like.
is this the same as experiencing flickering on the screen when you put the phone from a brightly lit room to a dimly lit room? i've had that issue several times already while an app is open and i move from direct light to my room where the light is off.

Adaptive brightness bug has been there from z series!! I just wondered wen I heard about this with xz premium (as I planned to get one but Sony has already started their degradation procedures with this device) and how users got confused to consider it as a bug or a feature!! This tech has been using In other models too!! I never heard of this issue on Xperia x And on other qualcomn devices with this feature or bug! Search for Adaptive brightness bug or issue on talk forums!! U Wil find all the info regarding this bug!! The only solution is to disable Adaptive brightness!! this issue hasn't occurred only in xzp!! It was been there and Sony behaves non existent on some issues like distortion and this ad bug
If u see ---- increase readability under sunlight option under developer options.. Toggle it off.. It will fix!! But AFAIK no Z or X series hav this option for nw!!
Seems it was there from z3 _

No I am NOT going to calm down! I am not having the problem but many are because for whatever reason it is not working properly.
Just go to ANY smart phone forum...take your pick....and you will find numerous complaints about all sorts of issues. Many are about the camera but the camera is not essential to the functioning of the phone as it was originally designed...as a communications device. But when your screen goes haywire, or your wifi stops working, or your LTE signal is so weak that you have to use 3G, and this happens on all cell phones...... and we are paying major $$$$$ for these things. then EVERYTHING that is included in the phone MUST WORK AS ADVERTISED!
What do you do when your car, or TV, or any other item you bought for big $$$$$ doesn't work as advertised, just accept it as "that's ok, that's the way it goes"? Not me! If these manufacturers can't make all these features work together seamlessly and accurately, then they need to stop putting so much into one device! Clearly they do NOT care about us... all they care about is selling the next greatest phone and just throw the "old" one in the trash! If we just consider the reason for the cell phone to exist in the first place.... as a mobile communications device....which in itself is a marvel of engineering....then every cell phone in the last five years or more works just as good as any new one released today. Heck even the very first cell phones can still do email, texting, GPS, wifi, bluetooth, and even make an actual phone call. Granted, there have been improvements in many areas regarding speed and accuracy. But now we are worried about 4K screens with 4K videos, and virtual reality and watching movies.... None of these things should even be on a cell PHONE! But they are and now we are stuck with shoddy implementations that conflict with the basic functioning of the device. And then Google releases another new OS while the two previous ones still have bugs. It is out of control.
OK, rant over for today. That was fun. Now where did I put that flame suit?
On to another debate. :good:

Calm down. It's working as advertised and it is a feature. Don't like it? Get a new phone from a different brand; then watch how the same thing will happen. When that happens, rant again in that device's respective forum.
I can see why Sony would want it to tweak the contrast, but on my older HTC phones the colours aren't fiddled with when using auto-brightness, only the backlight's brightness. On the Z5 it was a bit buggy in the older software builds where it would appear too bright or washed out on the lockscreen but they appear to have fixed it. What doesn't really make sense is that the black backgrounds of Spotify or Poweramp appear grey/purple when it detects daylight. Wouldn't it make more sense to make the darker parts of the image darker to enhance the contast?
+1
It is great feature, but it don't work as it should. Why then contrast is changing while I'm reading same page under same conditions, so I'm not moving and light intensity around me is the same? For example, I have Nokia 1020 and this feature works flawlessly! If it is sunny, display is very bright, if is not it is opposite.

Question Are these jagged punch-hole edges normal on all Pixel 6a units ?

The punch-hole's circumference is noticeably jagged. Please zoom in on the image attached. You'll see that the boundary of the punch-hole circle is not smooth. Apologies if the image does not convey my point. You may check you own device's punch-hole on full brightness, on a white background to get the idea.
I'd like to know if this is the case with every unit of Pixel 6a or if this is normal.
There's also some very tiny amount of green-tint/rainbow-ish effect around some part of the circumference of the punch-hole, although it is barely visible and is probably just my eyes' fault.
Thanks in advance.
Are you talking about the pixels themselves on the display?
Pixels are square. The punch hole is a circle, so it's going to look like that if you zoom in enough.
We don't need no stinking laser...
Lol it does look a bit crude but then again I never scrutinize my Samsung's stupid hole that closely.
Mine looks fine and so does yours. Yeah if blow up your macro shot to 3x can see maybe not laser perfect but the circle is also cutting over pixels, so that's to be expected. I don't notice any rainbowing on mine

Thanks for the reply. I was referring to the boundary/border/circumference of the black punch-hole. I suppose I was being too critical. From a normal distance it all seems fine.

Yeap, I was probably being a little too OCD with the whole thing. Thanks for the reply though.

True, true. It does look okay from a normal distance.

Run Screen Test to determine the color integrity of the pixels around the hole. Colors should be uniform. I always test the display on a new phone and as it ages.
Thanks for the response. I might run a screen test, although the screen seems perfectly fine as it is from average working distances. I was probably being way too ocd about the whole issue.

An interesting thread. The flashing proximity sensor threads were common a while back. One or two flashing pixels on phone calls drove some Samsung users mad. Never even notice it before
Always a good idea to run Screen Test to help spot display issues especially on a new device or one that's under warranty.
I test my 3yo N10+ every month or two. It's bright so don't linger too long when doing it.
Any display pixel anomalies are easy to spot.
Any wrong color pixels at the hole would confirm you suspicions. With 20/10 vision and no magnification though the hole should seem smooth, at least on a N10+.

I'm kinda new to all this. It'd be great if you could provide any suggestions regarding how to go about doing a screen test, where to start, any apps in particular, etc. Thanks.

Not sure if this will run on 12 but it's on Playstore. It's what I use.
