To boot into download mode on phones with ICS and up:
Turn off the phone, then press and hold the volume down key + the power key at the same time.
This should boot you into download mode.
If it doesn't, you may have to try different button combinations such as volume down + the home key + power key (holding them when the phone is off simultaneously to turn it on).
Also, on some phones you might have to pull out the battery (when connected to a USB) and do the combinations listed above for it to work.

wtf not going into recovery mode?

i need to root my phone so i can download rom manager so i can flash my first rom but its not kicking into recovery mode. im holding the power and volume keys at the same time. is there any other way?
1. Install android toolkit on computer
2. Install captivate drivers
3. Settings --> Enable USB debugging
4. Connect phone to computer
5. Open command prompt
6. Issue the command adb reboot recovery
Plus, u don't need ROM manager, nor root to do any of this stuff. Read the stickys on page 1 to get started on how to install ROMs.
1 turn off phone. wait for the vibrate to tell you its off!
2 hold both volume buttons
3 press the power button
4 DONT let the volume go until the screen comes on!

Let power go when you see the ATT screen, keep holding up+down vol
Mine just did the same thing tonight after using ODIN for the first time. Prior to ODIN, I could use the volume keys + power. After ODIN, the AT&T screen just flashes and then boots up.
I found other experiencing the same issue as me. I tried the following and it worked. However, I still cannot get the volume + power button trick to work anymore.

Not all build numbers can use the 3 button fix to enter recovery mode.
Look underneath your battery compartment to find your build number (1007, 1008, etc.). Then do a search to find out how to enter the recovery mode for your particular phone.
You may need to get yourself a usb jig.

so if you can enter download mode there is no problem, just install new rom ...
when i try to install a new rom with odin it gives me a massege "connect a telephone" but it is connected through usb..
i got the ops file in odin and by "one package" i put the md5 file.
But then i get that massege "connect a telephone"
Try an other USB-port, make sure Kies is not running and use Odin 4.43.
i dont have kies on the computer and i use odin 4.43.
i tried another usb port but no changes..

But Kies includes drivers for the phone - so do you have properly installed drivers for your phone?
OT: Is there a chance to take back given "Thanks"? I accidentally pressed "thanks" instead of "quote"

Yeah but such a problem seems to occur relative often.
I would try to reinstall drivers, maybe with the Kies-drivers or use another computer.
I have similar problem. There is the same symptoms.
I have try:
- other usb ports
- other drivers (original samsung / kies drivers)
- other pc
- kill kies processes
- misc roms
and.. nothing..
I cant get recovery mode.. There is ramdump mode instead of recovery :/
Actually my i9001 is bricked and I cant load any rom..
Maybe my sgs is locked by bootloader or something?
if ure entering ramdump mode then u dont have the correct combination of buttons down when booting up:
Vol + / Power = Recovery Mode
Vol + / Home / Power = Ramdump Mode
Vol - / Home / Power = Download Mode
cheers

At least your guide on how to get to recovery is a big fail. That works with I9000, not I9001. Vol + / Power, WHEN the samsung text appears, release both buttons. AND when the lights in the softkeys turn on, quickly tap MENU, that's how to boot to recovery mode
well sorry if i left that part out, i assumed he would know how to navigate the recovery mode once he actually got the button combo right. and the only fail here is ur rude attitude, deff. no need for that around here imho.
aside from that, all these instructions are correct.
cheers
Sent from my GT-I9001 using XDA App
I solved the problem.
Unfortunately not on my PC. My i9001 needed a box which I solved all mistakes.
Now I have Gingerbread with root
Unfortunately I still hav a problem with my PC which doesn't want connect with sgs.. :/
I will try trial and error method.

For download mode on your tab, you need to hold Power and Volume UP (not Down). Otherwise, you get into the recovery mode...

Yes. And you have to press Power or VolDown (I think?) to confirm -- it tells you right there. When you are finally in the download mode, you will see a message like "Downloading. Do not disconnect target..." That's when Odin should recognize your tablet and be able to start flashing.
You press Volume Down and Power. Until it appears the lobo you only keep pressing Volume down and dont power button.

Struggling to get into download mode

So I seem to be struggling to get into download mode, I can get into recovery easily but when I get to the press volume up to boot or press volume down to enter download screen, if I let go of the volume button it just boots like normal and I can't seem to find any way to fix this

Try using adb. Connect your tab to a computer and use the "adb reboot bootloader" command (without the double quotes).

HELP
May be your volume down button is faulty and stuck in pressing position. When you reboot device and vol down button remains pressed, device boot in safe mode. Check if it pressed then try to release it carefully if stucked there
i try and it doesnt work after the update , i try to keep pressing and it doesnt work at all the volume down button
