[Q] n5 charging habbits!!!! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been a proud owner of a n5 for almost 6 months.Lately,I've been dealing with really annoying problem, that is slow charging(not all of the time though), and I've racking my my brain quite a long time in order to find what's wrong.I use the stock charger with an adapter to fit in 2-pin socket.Has anyone experienced the same problem out of the blue and what would you recommend??
Thanks in advance guys!!!!

I would recommend trying a different cable with the charger. If it persists, try a different charger and cable. This way you can rule out the most likely scenario of the issue being with the cable or charger.

Car Charger (CC C100)

Hi guys,
Im facing a problem with the HTC original car charger (CC C100)... I have bought three chargers up until now and they all ended up fried!! Theiur output is 5V - 2A
I still want to get the HTC one but i dont know what the problem is! Im guessing the car is not the problem since im using an ipod charger with no issues. In addition i tried one of the chargers in another car with no luck.
I cant be that unlucky to get 3 faulty chargers. That only leaves me with a faulty phone or battery...right???
My phone's battery is the one that came in the box (35h00112-09M)...
Should there be any problems with this setup?? Has anyone faced this problem? Any solutions or suggestions??
Thanks...
sorry can i ask how much you paid for the car charger c c100? thanks..

Nexus S charger issues?

Hi,
I recently lost my charger and had to buy a new charger for my Nexus S. The process proved to more difficult than I had first anticipated. I had to try a lot of chargers before I found one that worked. When I plugged in other chargers the touchscreen just froze, or in some cases response slowed down extremely. What's the reason for this? I am going to buy another charger from eBay and I want to know what to look for to avoid buying a charger that will make my device unusable.
I bought a charger behaving exactly like what you described as well. I have a suspicion, perhaps the resistance value between d+/d- of those chargers somehow put NS into some mode that doesn't respond to touch inputs? I wonder if it'll work by shorting the d+/d- pins.
same thing here , dont know how to solve it , only to buy an original charger :/
Same here. I tried a Nokia AC-10 1200 mA and it behaved exactly like you described.
Now I have a 3rd party made for HTC rated 1000 mA and it works flawlessly.
You just have to try them out, that's the only thing I could suggest right now. Or, if you're feeling lucky, try the D+/D- method.

Charging port pins lifting

Hi I noticed a while ago that pin 30 on my charging port of my tablet was lifted some so I pushed it down with a toothpick. There wasnt an issue with the tablet before, it was just something I noticed. I ordered a cable from ebay, probably a knock off, and it worked for both charging (with the use of the p1000 adapter) and for data transfer. I was using the tablet mostly for debugging and movies. I recently had it charging for a while using the rocketfish usb hub and the p1000 adapter. I tried to plug in my tablet to the pc with and without the adapter and my pc was telling me that it had an unknown device plugged in. I looked up what exactly pin 30 was and it is a ground pin. My question is would that pin affect the ability for the pc to data transfer and recognize the device? The cable currently only works for charging and that is with or without the P1000 adapter. Other than that it gives me an unknown device when plugged into the pc. I dont have another tablet or cable to test so I may just order an official cable and charger if the ground shouldnt be an issue.
Have you installed Kies? Windows cannot recognize samsung galaxy devices without it
My cable stopped charging all together. I ordered another data cable to see if my original cable was faulty. Hopefully that was the problem all along.
I got my new cable in which btw is alot more sturdier than the last. I plugged it in anticipating an error and behold! My pc recognized my tablet and began to charge. The data part works because it instantly showed that the tablet was in debug mode. So my pins were not a problem, just my cheap chinese tablet cable. P.S. I did not have to install that software and if in the future I come across a problem then I will try out the software. Unless there is a benefit to installing the samsung software? feels like an iTunes type of software. Thanks for the suggestions and hopefully this will help others in the future.
:good:
Thank you for posting your fix for your question. It drives me crazy when people ask a question. Then later reply nvm I figured it out. (And don't explain what they did) or not even reply at all.
I think I have same issue. My stock cable won't charge anymore. Do you have a link where you bought new charger? Or what store did you go to?
I ordered one from amazon and it was a knockoff that gets a red x over battery icon :/

Did you order cable only?
Are you sure there is nothing wrong with the charger base?

No I order this combo kit with wall charger, car charger and 30 pin USB cable. From amazon
Weird cause the car charger works amazing. Can watch Netflix w/ full brightness and still charge. While the wall charger will only charge if shut down
But about original charger. I was mistaken. I had a 6ft. Extention cord that I would plug it into cause original cord is way to short. And come to find out it was the extention causing the issue.
But I'm still interested in a Spare wall charger that actually works. Lol where did you get yours. Is it just as good as stock

I've experienced the same with extention cord, wonder why the amps get lost on the way into the battery?

Well technically the extention cord isn't putting out the same amount of amps as the wall outlet. Especially when the gauge of the wire is way smaller most likely. But I like to use my tablet while charger and refuse to 3ft away from wall so its kinda neccessary lol

Very strange charging problem!

Ok, first a little background on this issue...
After having my S3 for about 13-14 months I started having charging issues. The charging port was very "loose" and I had to make sure my charger cable was in just right to get my phone to charge. This was annoying, however was out of warranty and didn't want to pay vzw for an insurance claim. This got worse, and eventually I noticed my phone would only charge with 1 specific usb cable, 1 specific wall charger, and 1 specific car charger.
Well, I finally called Samsung and explained the situation to them and they had me chip my phone to them and they would repair it, free of charge. When they had it, they replaced the charging port, the headphone jack, and the screen. I received the phone back after couple weeks, super excited, and immediately charged it up with the cable I had next to my bed. New charging port felt perfect, nice snug fit, etc... Well, after a few days i hooked it up with the original usb cable that came with the phone, nothing happened. So i started messing around and realized that the only usb cables that will charge my phone are Motorola brand cables! At least the 2 cables I have work, and not a single other cable I've tried works! This includes stock Samsung cable, many cheap 3rd party cables, other friend's S3 cables, none work. Also, I have this cheap car charger that is the type you plug a USB cable into that works, however any other car charger I've tried does not work either.
Also, when i say the cables won't charge my phone, it also won't connect the phone to a PC. They do absolutely nothing.
Does anyone have ANY idea why this is happening?!?! It was an issue before Samsung repaired my phone, they replaced the charging port, but I still have this issue!! I can send it back to Samsung for them to look at it again, however my backup phone, a Razr Maxx, just died also. Seems like the battery went dead and now I can't get it to charge, but that's another issue.
So, any ideas?!

What rom/kernal
It doesn't matter. It does this when it is totally stock and rooted. Right now I'm not rooted or anything because it looks like it may be going back to Samsung again.

I think the smart charging circuit may be messed up
Really? How would that cause the phone to not work with any cable except a certain brand?? I'm just really curious and this is driving me insane!!

I would say you are putting mechanical stress on the charging port. This could be from some misaligned or mis-made cable or somehow pressing or pulling the charge cable when its connected. I've never seen this reported by anyone else, but the mechanical connections are not indestructible. If it were a common symptom with 100 million S3s having been sold, there would be a firestorm of complaints.
I have a similar issue. I'm not sure if it's the device or the ROM (CM nightlies).
Certain cables force the screen to turn back on, which means I get negative charge because the screen burns more than the charger is capable of supplying. Other cables are fine. I'm still looking for the pattern, it's super annoying and causes me to have to turn my phone off completely at times so as not to lose my battery altogether. I'm still trying to solve this, any help would be appreciated.

Further info- it's not the cable, it's the converter at the end. I think it has to do with amperage of the charger- if I use the stock samsung one I'm good, it's putting out 1.0A. If I use others that are fewer amps (like 700 mA) it's unpredictable. I suspect a kernel thing, I might download different kernels to play with it.

Always use chargers that is 1 A - 2A the circuit controls most of the charging regulating amps and voltage
Yes, I agree about using good chargers, but my phone wasn't always this way. It used to charge with anything, but no longer.
I enabled fast charge on Imosyen's lean kernel. That might have made a difference, but I'm not positive yet.

[Q] Phone not charging, USB burnt

RESOLVED (Kinda)
Hello!
My VZW i535 just started giving me issues. I should preface this by saying that it is rooted and I do have a CM11 nightly flashed (will try to get specific version when I can, which may be awhile). I've had this installed for probably over a month now without problems. I also understand that charging issues are very common but nothing I could find is the same as my issue.
I noticed my phone was overheating (as it has frequently since purchased) with about 30% battery today, so I plugged it in after doing a reboot and all seemed well. About 15 minutes later I hear it beeping, giving the signal the battery is below 15%. It was actually at 5%, and the bottom of the device was extremely hot, as well as the end of the Samsung cable included with it, so I unplugged it and found that the metal part of the cable was mostly black and there was a strong electrical burning smell.
I tried two other USB cables, both in the Samsung AC adapter, and in the USB ports of several devices. With any cable in the adapter, it would say "charging" but would not actually charge, but with the computer USB ports it wouldn't say or do anything at all.
The battery is at 2% now and the device is powered off so that I can quickly do something if need be, but I can't do much. I ordered some replacement batteries with a charger, due for arrival by Friday 1/3, since I assume that the damage to the USB interface is permanent.
Is it likely that this was caused by the software? Or is the charger faulty? Any advice, in general? The warranty has expired, but I do have insurance on it if for some reason it would be better to just get a new device. I can't restore it to stock until I get replacement batteries; is that what you recommend?
Thanks so much!
Sounds like a hardware i ssue. Look inside ur usb port on the device to make sure it did not get burn. Wen ur battery comes in put it on and try to charge it with new cable. If it doesn't charge then it will ur USB port. I know some 4.4 roms give wonky bat stats but it shouldn't burn out ur cable or usb port at least i think it shouldn't. If u believe is a software issues flash a different version of the rom a previous build or a whole different rom. But with 2% battery i don't think u would be able to. Good luck
After playing around with it a bit, the USB interface on my phone definitely appears to have taken damage from the heat. It only charges when powered off, must be completely still, and charges relatively slowly.
What I would recommend for people with a similar problem is to do as I have done and purchase extra batteries with an external battery charger like the set I got for around $17 on Amazon.
My only guess for what caused this is that something faulted in the cable or AC adapter and caused a severe overheat issue. If anyone has anything else to say about that, please let me know so I have a better idea of what happened. I will mark as resolved soon.
