[Q] Buying a nexus 5 1 question - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, new to the forums and want to ask a question as maybe there are people here who will be able to help me.
I want to buy a nexus 5, and currently I'm looking at one on ebay for £50 less than the price on the google store. I asked the seller whether it comes with warranty and he said no as its being imported from outside the UK, however he said its a Genuine LG Nexus 5 even though its from hong kong (now you see my concern)
£290, is it worth risking it for a possible fake? (if there are fakes out there that is)
Thanks,
Rús

Pay the extra 50. It's worth it for the peace of mind and warranty. If it is a fake or it has a problem with it, it's going to be a nightmare and it's going to cost you much more to get it fixed.

ah ok, thanks. I was hoping I could buy the wireless charger for it with that money, oh well
I would post the link here for the auction but I'm not sure if thats allowed on these forums, I wouldn't expect it to be.

Pay the extra end of story......

You got to love and hate hotdeals.
It is without doubt a bargain, if you want one and can afford it, I believe that people on that site just vote cold on anything they dont want or cant afford or dont understand, shame really.

Thanks for that - i've been waiting for play.com to have a 10% discount which would have only bought the price down to £432(approx).
This is a great price - i only hope they don't say its a mistake as it looks like one (its cheaper than the Diamond which is £363.39).
It Should arrive on Thursday - just ordered it now.

I've decided to give a WM phone a go again and ordered myself.
To start with I'll just use it with a data sim, to see what its like, as you can't knock a blackberry for staying in touch with IM etc, but Im just so bored of the crap browser experience and lack of software like Live Mesh, which I use one hell of a lot to keep things synced.
I'll use both for a few weeks and see how it goes.
Looks like they have discovered it - gone back up to £466.89 without postage.
Good thing i bought mine
LOL! I don't feel so sick now ; )
spark9990, when your new pro arrives, please could you take a look at what version ROM it ships with now? (start/settings, system tab, device information - though I'm sure you'll know that already). Congratulations on getting such a great price!!!

Yes and mines on tracking so give them credit for keeping the price for those that bought.
I've used them many times actually and they always have been good.

They've cancelled my order - twats. Can they do that?
Mine as well, mine was at the delivery depot.
Not even a offer of a good will gesture, I'm going to check out if they can do that, especially I can prove it was out for delivery.

Had they sent emails to you both confirming dispatch? If so then then I guess they had entered into a contract with you... talk to Trading Standards for a firm answer....

I don't have proof of that - but i do have a receipt, and they did take money out of my account.
Then without my permission carried out a refund transaction. I trying to find out how to contact trading standards but in the mean time i am going to try to reason with sellers.
In a retail store, if a product is tagged as a cheaper price by mistake, then the retailer has to give it at that price.
If Handtec had debited your back account/credit card account, then they had entered into a contract with you to supply that item at that price. Speak to both Trading Standards and Handtec about it and make sure you can demonstrate that they had taken your dosh. All you did is select a product on Handtec's website in good faith and, for their part, it would appear that they too entered into that contract to suppply it, so I suggest they honour it!
EDIT: http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk, and they should have an entry in your local phone book. Kent is 0845 7585497 (just in case - good luck!)

Thats not true. Most big stores (such as Tesco) will sell you at the quoted price for the good will. By Law they infact have something like 24 hours to correct the price once notified by a customer, during which time they can sell at a different price than is quoted.
That is really bad!
I thought maybe it had something to do with stock levels, but if it got to the depot, you think they would have realised!
Hope you get a response from them or Trading Standards

[Q] Where to Buy the Nexus 5? (USA)

Hello XDA,
I missed the small window of opportunity to purchase the nexus 5 from the play store (16 gb), and now it is almost a month out of stock. I am looking to buy the Nexus 5, but can't find a well-priced retailer. BestBuy andRadioshack (along with my carrier) tack on an extra $100 , which I really don't want to pay. Has anyone successfully purchased the nexus 5 from somewhere other than the Play store for less than $450? If so, is it still available from that location?
Thanks,
ccrama
(I am in the United States)

I personally would try craigslist. That's where I bought mine. The guy sold it for $400 which is like $9 more than it would have been with tax and shipping for google play

I'm going to try to find one on craigslist, but ebay is way overpriced, like 150-200 over play price. I might have luck on craigslist!

[Q] Warranty on a Nexus 5 from Ebay

If I buy a nexus 5 from ebay, can I still use the Google warranty on it?

Technically, the warranty is not by Google - it is by LG. Google will handle returns/replacements within the first 15 days.
According to LG, the warranty is for 12 months for the original purchaser.

Sorry - can't say because I haven't tried it. I suspect it will be ok if you have original receipt since all LG would really care about is the purchase date to figure out whether it is still under warranty or not, but I don't know if they will check purchaser name as well. You could check with Google/LG to be sure, but I'm pretty sure they will give you the legal answer
Just out of curiosity, why are you buying from ebay instead of the play store? Is it significantly cheaper there? I just glanced thru' some of the postings there and they all seem to be selling over $400 (buy it now)

The price in the Play Store is almost 450, with taxes and shipping, and there are options for less than that.
Moreover, I am having trouble ordering from the Play Store as I am not a resident of the USA, and only sending it to a person there. I know that the ebay order will get there, unlike the Play Store order which is still pending and can be dropped at any moment.

High resale price - why?

I just observed used Nexus 5 being sold for about $35 less than new within countries which have plenty of stock. Is this the "one born every minute" or something else?
example of used $350
and example of new $385
With OnePlus out in a few weeks for $349 plus unknown on tax and postage, and a few other low-priced unlocked handsets out there, I'm puzzled why Nexus 5 is holding its used price, and its coming under attack on its new price.
Because it's a great phone. Oneplus one may be too big for some. Plus it's a true developers phone. No one knows what the oneplus one sources / blobs for drivers will be like...

I avoid devices for a couple of months to let bugs discovered and resolved.
But that wasn't my question, i don't understand why someone would buy used for 90% of new? It's not like stock is hard to get new.

its new price is fairly cheap, and its used price is competitive with other phones because its as good as or better than the other phones.

90% is cheaper than 100%. Not everyone is as fortunate as you to be able to pay 100%
"but it's only $35"
Someone could feed themselves for a week on that. Don't make the mistake of confusing being frugal with being dumb, or that everyone is the same as you

If they're starving they can do with a cheaper Nexus 4 for months.
Warranty is part of frugality, if my new N5 breaks I got some postage costs probably, but I'm less exposed financially than I am with used.
Well luckily for them, it's not your decision what they do with their money
Some people don't care about warranty. Some people know how to use warranty. It's not a problem for them, it's not a problem for you so don't worry yourself about people being "dumb". If you're asking "why isn't everyone like me?", well that's a philosophical question, probably better angled towards facebook

Because the phone is worth a lot more than $350 to most people. Similar phones cost $700 and the Oneplus isn't even being sold really.
Also countries that don't have the Play Store devices, their only choice is to buy them second hand and they are willing to pay as much as the retail cost.
One word answer: demand.

I agree plus we don't know the potential scare story inside the OnePlus for at least month, it needs bulk ownership first from those who have another device already as their main phone.

Those living in other countries buy our used phones. $350 for a used N5 is still half the price they would pay for a new phone in their country.
Anyone living in North America can buy the phone for $350 new and have no incentive to buy it used for that price.

What makes you think people in the US are buying them used for more than they cost new? I would just assume they are all out of seas, but there is no real way of telling. Or is there?
If they are, they must not realize they can buy it new for the same price from Google. Or perhaps they are attempting a scam of some sort.

Even in the USA, sometimes it takes a while to get. And beyond that, it's still cheaper than any other alternatives, and some people prefer it to be cheaper. If it's 10% cheaper than retail, then that's still 10% they save.

Buying them Honor devices from Three UK you get the same warranty as if bought online via Vmall.UK.So trust assured you good on all accounts and Vmall will deal with you directly once bought.

I think 1 year is good enough already... usually after 1 year, manufacturer will stop/slow down upgrade, at that time, you have to rely on developers from XDA or places alike.

i have to agree here, most places will only offer a year anyway as after this they normally have slowed down production and are at that point concentrating on another product.
if its that much of a problem about aftercare i would personally find good insurance for your phone after the year is up @OP
i have insurance on all my electronics so i never pay a thing for breakdowns etc.
