When I go through the process of executing firewater (Using the weaksauce method)is always get to "Opening first bottle: Chugging...." and then it fails every time. I have tried going through the process at least 10 times and it doesn't work. I'm not sure if the problem is from the SuperSU binaries not updating. Every time I tried to update the binaries after achieving root with weaksauce it always fails and says to reboot. I've been trying to get this to work for hours now and its just getting annoying. Anyone know how to fix this?

Yeah, it says something along the lines of "firewater will not work on this device"
Ok, well that particular error is pretty self explanatory.

i have 2 verizon m8's and initial boot (where it says HTC in white), i have one that is BN from the verizon store that is just white, and one that was repaired by HTC that now says HTC, powered by android underneath right at initial boot. would that entail the bootloaders are different even though they have the same version number?

Probably someone who had installed custom splash broke the phone and sent it in on warrenty.. they probably just fixed the reported issue likely screen or something hardware so the splash is still there. That is kind of funnny though.
Seems like a lot of newer m8's are having this issue. Sunshine is confirmed to work with people having the "whelp" error.
It's $25, but well worth it in my opinion. Easy to use and easy way to support the developers.

So - what's the difference between 'whelp' devices and those where firewater works?
Different firmware version? Different bootloader?

http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~willi348...2.7-1.85.502.3_R2_releasenin45grzkfswb95v.zip
A few caveats:
1) This is for devs only. I have no idea how to manually use this to update. If anybody knows how, shoot me a pm and lmk.
2) This includes a few firmware updates. Among them is an update to HBOOT that adds write protection to the boot.img partition (and possibly others). What this means is that with this new HBOOT, we cannot flash the boot.img from recovery anymore, even with an unlocked bootloader. We can still flash it from fastboot though. Keep this in mind as we may not be able to revert back to an older HBOOT, at least currently.
Excellent.

root was achieved on 1.85
i found this post first but the one-click roots never worked for me, though some 'acted' like they were successful. i ended up having to do it the manual way here.
note that on the first post it notes that "ATT COULD SHUTDOWN THE UPDATE SERVERS AND KILL THIS"
i'm not smart enough to confirm, but supposedly it's because this exploit requires an update check on the phone and uses a file from that check. I've also read that the 2.20 update has killed the exploit
i've seen at least one report here where someone tried the 1.85 exploit after 2.20 came out and they were still able to root. maybe if you act fast enough you might get lucky

I think the real question is how long before someone finds a software exploit that allows S-Off.
I honestly think we have a long, long wait, if we ever see it.

Are you kidding? Two days for a phone chipset that had like 10 iterations of security? I will bet that no one will get a root exploit unless it comes in the form of s-off because its silly to have root without s-off on HTC phones. Beups, jcase or whoever is working on the phone likely have root exploits already (and they always save one or two for a rainy day) and are not going to release it on it's own. Be patient, stop asking for ETAs.

Well for one root only won't allow us an insecure kernel to be flashed. That means /system write protection will still be in place.
Unlock allows you to flash custom recovery and kernels.
S-off let's you do all (even firmware downgrades)

So then what is "root only" able to do? Especially the type we know have available that only roots after a minute after a reboot so that first minute on reboot you are not rooted. Makes me think rooted apps/tweaks won't work right since after boot they can't go into effect since root hasn't kicked in yet???

A lot won't work right. Write protection will revert most changes back after a reboot. Root can be effective for some changes that don't need to persist a reboot. Just all depends on what you use root for. Non-system app data back-up/restore is a good example.

Unfortunately there's never been a way to convert the Verizon addition to a developer edition as far as I know. But with S OFF there is really no difference because the device is completely unlocked and you can do whatever you please with it.

You make a good point that would be a benefit. But honestly I've never seen a way to do the conversion on a verizon phone

Can you link me to the exact one that you are running currently? I installed the 1122 build yesterday and everything was fine until I rebooted the ROM and I lost data completely and was unable to get it back. I heard of a few others complaining of the same issue. Have you tried to reboot your phone and see if data still working with wifi off? If so and it is please link me to it exactly which version you're running thanks

If you want to try GPE Android lollipop build that is very fast and stable try this out. Been running it for around four days now and the battery life and stability is amazing.

OK gotcha. Guess were on the same page then. You using the cm12 as your daily driver then?

I installed it a hour ago. No problems yet
I have been wanting to convert mine to a dev for a long time, and there are two different posts out on the m8 forum for this but they only work for the gsm versions such as international, tmobile and at&t. And I"am sure there has to be a way for our verizon m8 its just finding it, as ours is a world phone being both cdma and gsm, even if it had to only run on the gsm side it could still work if they get the volte update pushed out as part of L then there would be no need for cdma for us and we could just totally run off verizon lte which is actually gsm.
So this may be a possibility in the near future especially. I myself not only want the updates directly from htc which are faster but I would prefer to never ever again have to run verizon software / firmware because all verizon wants to do is lock us all out.
At least all the other carriers allow htc dev to unlock the bootloaders but verizon just likes to be total asses about this, I guess they think they are too big for there britches, for this exact reason I really wish I could switch to at&t but I dont have coverage for them at home with zero bars maybe some edge coverage 1% of the time never enough to use the phone on, and verizon is not much better with only getting 1x data and no plans to upgrade.
So I"am with all of you on this I would like to convert my verizon m8 to dev also and ditch verizon having any control over my phone ever again, as I pay them for service and not to try to lock down my phone which I"am supposed to legally own with honoring my side of the their 2 year contract.
But for that matter you can buy a phone at full retail price and they still try to lock you down.

See my last post right before this one, as I should have replied on your opening.
Hey guys, I just rooted my HTC one m8 on 4.4.4 and I cannot get the supersu binaries to update. Am I still able to unlock with sunshine without updating the binaries? I do have root, root checker verifies that I do.

Ah, that makes sense. I guess I didn't see that part. I saw that droidmodderx was able to update his binaries. I am just hesitant to purchase sunshine because I was planning on getting the note 4 soon, but seeing as how expensive it is I will probably wait.

If you are on the fence consider this to be an investment. Sell your phone s-off and on a stock Rom on swappa.com. most people will consider that $25 you paid in their price. Most people meaning XdA users.

Once rooted, regular power saver mode Is easily unlocked on stock Rom with sqlite editor and a very simple database edit.
