Check this thread out and follow the link to the wiki. It should give you enough information to get the basics.

Also, do a google search for the "rooting for dummies" guide. I couldnt post the link cause its an outside source.
Just download Clockworkmod. It has a pretty comprehensive list for roms that are easily flashable. I agree the list isn't that great. But it will at least get you started on how to flash them.

I think you mean Rom Manager, which will allow the OP to flash clockworkmod recovery. Most importantly once you've done this, do a Nandroid backup! I can't stress that enough.
Once that's done you can download and flash one of the custom ROMs from Rom Manager or use it to flash a ROM .zip from your SD card.

You dont actually need to do steps 3 and 4. Because when i went through all that, i installed a custom recovery then i flashed a pre-rooted rom and all worked well.

So from what I gather from reading is that you have to unlock Bootloaders & Push Recovery Image thru ADB.
I would have thought by now somone would have done it with terminal, or some other way to Flash the Recovery.

EDIT: I got it finally... with Root I used Root Explorer to get rid of that retarded file and pushed Recovery again and all is well in Xoom Land.
Thanks Everyone!!

Which method are you using to get root and CWM recovery? It sounds like you are trying to use the old method of installing the modified 3e recovery and then using an update.zip. There is an updated way to do this with AT&T 2.3.6, and the old way doesn't quite work the same anymore. Let me know which method you're trying so I know where to direct you from there.
EDIT: Since I'm pretty sure that you are using the old method from stock Froyo to get root and CWM recovery, take a look at this thread. It's a how-to that explains most of the ways to get root and CWM recovery on 2.3.6.:

It sounds like the old way using an update.zip. In Froyo, we used to replace the stock recovery with a 3e recovery that would allow unsigned files to be flashed. Then we'd flash an update.zip that contained CWM recovery. Just curious, how did you root, and is this AT&T Gingerbread?
I'd read through that how-to thread I posted. If you can use Heimdall or Odin, there are some quick ways to get CWM recovery. In that thread, I've also outlined how to do it yourself on stock 2.3.6.

To get Gingerbread with CWM recovery for flashing roms, you could flash Option C or Option D from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Or, if you prefer Heimdall, qkster has some nice one-click packages. There are links for those in the first thread I gave you.
If you already have root (How did you root, again?), then you could just flash one of the Gingerbread kernel / CWM recovery packages from here.:

Before you go any further, we need to investigate something. First, let's confirm that you are on AT&T 2.3.6, because most of us haven't found or made a working one-click program to root stock 2.3.6 directly. Can you go to Settings / About Phone and tell me what is listed under "Baseband version"?
If you can do that to confirm that this is AT&T 2.3.6, I'd really like to know what program you used. Or did you root the phone before you were on Gingerbread?
Any of those links that I've given you in the last post will give you CWM (clockwork) recovery to install different roms. An easy way would be to do Option C or Option D at this one. Either one will do. Here's the link again.:

I seriously hope that someone can help me. I have been trying to root and update my HTC Inspire for four days now and have not had ANY luck. I have watched every single youtube video, read countless threads, visited numerous websites and I have not had any luck. I REALLY want to update my phone to ICS and eveything I have searched tells me I have to root it first. Obviously this is my first time rooting and I am not having any luck. I have Jailbroke countless iPhones with ease but rooting is so much more complicated to me. Does anyone have any info to help me out? Links? Step-by-step instructions? ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if I have tried the Ace Think Tank. I have managed to Unlock my Bootloader and download CWM. Through CWM I downloaded and installed this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461
But its NOT ICS which is what I'm wanting to do.
As for the methods I have tried they are:
Ace Advanced Hack Kit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377905
Poot
And a few more I am unable to think of.
It took me forever just to learn how to install CWM but through Ace Hack Kit I was able to by going into options.
I've also had the issue of my computer not reading my phone while it was in HBoot mode or recovery mode.
So thats where I am now and I now I am trying to upgrade to ICS.
Darn I'm rusty. Do you have whatchamacallit installed on your computer? Adb.... Phew, took me a bit to remember that

Okay, you need some clarification.
AAHK1 is retired and unsupported. It won't work for you without some fiddling. It's used to get S-Off. Since you already unlocked your bootloader, you don't need it to flash a custom ROM.
The stock firmware you tried to flash won't be ICS. DHD stock firmware ends with GB.
The custom ROM you tried to flash (as well as any other custom ROM) requires that you: 1. flash it in CWM. 2. fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.

Okay so now I understand why AAHK1 is not working for me. I did not realize that it was unsupported. Also, the only reason I flashed the DHD stock firmware is just to get my phone rooted since I was unable to figure it out myself. Do you know of a ROM that has ICS that I can flash or do I have to install the original stock ROM without it being rooted then root it myself and install another ROM that has ICS?
I've learned how to flash a custom ROM. I have CWM downloaded thanks to youtube and the video also showed me how to flash a ROM. So I am able to do that.
You don't need root to flash a ROM, just an unlocked or S-Off bootloader. You have an unlocked one, so that works. Flash a ROM from CWM, then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip. The Ace Think Tank thread has links for that.

Hey guys, posted in a few threads but starting a separate thread to keep my issues out of them.
Anyways, my tablet is out up date and I havent kept up to speed on the last 2 years worth of developments. So im looking to upgrade my rooted and unlocked tablet on 4.1 to the 5.0 rom. My twrp version is 2.3.3.0.
How would i go about updating to a 4.4/5.0 compatible bootloader and recovery?
Ive been advised to update the bootloader, but should i flash the boot before the updated twrp or the other way around? While we're at it, I've noticed the nvflash tools. I'm assuming doing the nvflash stuff would help me recover from any possible bricks?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for following me around my 3 posts, lol.
Quick questions:
1. Should I flash the bootloader BEFORE flashing the updated TWRP? Or does the new TWRP get flashed before the bootloader.
2. When I flash the new bootloader, will i still be able to run 4.1 on the tablet (i.e. is the new bootloader backwords compatible?)
3. Will the NVFLASH stuff help me in the event that I do mess something up? Seems like it supposed to be a brick-proof safety net in case something goes wrong.
thanks for the help man!

Thanks Josh, I think I know what to do now:
Step 1: Set up NVFLASH and get my backup files.
Step 2: Flash the 27.5 Bootloader using fastboot.
Step 3: Flash TWRP openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-tf300t.blob
Step 4: Wipe system/cache, etc
Step 5: Flash Katkiss 5.0
Is this correct? Am i missing any steps in there?
Looks like you're not on hangouts right now, shoot me a message if we can chat. [email protected]
So, Josh TOTALLY hooked me up on this issue. Not only offer his help, he actually walked me through the entire process watching my screen through screenshare. I'm now up and running on Kitkass 5.0.... sweet sweet lollipop goodness.
Not sure how to edit the title to solved, but maybe a mod could do that?
