You dont actually need to do steps 3 and 4. Because when i went through all that, i installed a custom recovery then i flashed a pre-rooted rom and all worked well.

So from what I gather from reading is that you have to unlock Bootloaders & Push Recovery Image thru ADB.
I would have thought by now somone would have done it with terminal, or some other way to Flash the Recovery.

Look at it this way, spend countless hours trying to find an exploit or two seconds unlocking the bootloader and pushing recovery and or insecure boot.img

Yeah... I did it. Unlocked bootloaders & pushed CWM. I was on ICS 4.0.3 & now I get the Green Bot with !... and cant get into CWM. I just rooted with the one click push whatever and now I need to get CWM right. What a ***** this motorola is.
EDIT: I got it finally... with Root I used Root Explorer to get rid of that retarded file and pushed Recovery again and all is well in Xoom Land.
Thanks Everyone!!

Root Xoom Wifi 3.1

Is there a method out yet? I'm looking at the one click root method but it's unclear if it works with the 3.1 Wifi US model. I don't want to be a guinea pig so if anyone knows please let me know. Majority wins.
Please wait until a new boot image has been made for the wifi model
Ok cool thanks. I'll burn some time downloading more apps and stuff.
Just follow those steps.

I had a stock wifi xoom and got my 3.1 update OTA yesterday and install it. If I do this method, does it take my xoom back to 3.0.1, then back to 3.1? Do I loose my data?

Jase33 helped me with this a little while ago, in order to root you will have to go back to 3.0.1.
In doing so you will lose data. You can use BRD's method to get 3.1 fully rooted.
If you have a WIFI-only Xoom you can also attain root using my method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13712556
First your Xoom has to be unlocked, then all you need to do is install a custom recovery and flash my MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip file.
Unlocking your XOOM:
Follow the first step here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010568
Once your unlocked all you need to do is flash a custom recovery (I recommend this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979
and flash my MZ604_3.1_ROOT_update.zip file from within your new recovery.
By the way the file needs to be on an external SD card so you'll need one of those as well.
As far as working one-click methods, that I am unsure of.

Thanks, I personally wasn't looking for a one-click, cant speak for the OP though. So, in order to install a customer recovery we don't have to be rooted already?

One more, I see your method mentions having the original boot image. Will that be necessary if you're never rooted running 3.1. Thanks again.

Folks, be careful with this. Dont rush into something you may regret. And last I checked you need root existing for cwm to work properly. So if you are on HC 3.1 stock, be glad you got the OTA and wait for something to be posted and tested. Too many posts are titled "HELP!!!! PLEASE!!! my Xoom is bricked or stuck or whatever"
I'm just going to wait for the One-Click to come out. I know how to root and adb but I'm leaving today from NJ to NC for my brothers graduation. I don't want to get started in something that I won't be able to finish. Hopefully when I come back the one click will be out.

[Q] Update Nexus S from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3 manually with a broken power button

Hello everyone
I own a Nexus s I9020 T-mobile. and I'm using it on Vodafone.
My power button stopped working a month back and I'm using widgetlocker lockscreen to unlock.
I did not receive the OTA for ICS last month and i would like to have it on my phone by doing the update manually.
Is there a way to do the update manually with a broken power button ?
Thanks
There is a clockwork recovery with touchscreen interface I can't remember where I saw it though. So you could use that to flash the ota. Or you could flash the boot and system images directly through adb if they have been posted somewhere. You will have to root your phone before you can use these methods

thanks .. but I think the touch based clockwork recovery is only avilable for Galaxy Nexus and more over I dont want to root my phone unless it is absolutely necessary .. because i'll have to re-install all my apps

The Clockwork Recovery you are looking for is named TWRP (latest is Version 2.0.0). Look at the offical site - http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 - choose your device (NS or NS4G) and install via adb
Good luck

will try it out .. just hope I don't brick my phone 'coz im going to root my phone for the first time
looks like you have gone back to CM7 from ICS
should I overlook ICS too, coz im pretty happy with GB right now.
You don't need to flash TWRP. In clockwork mod recovery back is back, menu is down, search is select, home is up.

even to flash ClockworkMod or TWRP, first you will need to unlock the bootloader right ?
for this again the need for power button arises..

Successful root and unlock, can't get past splash screen :( Help

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum.
Today I successfully perm rooted my Doubleshot...
Then I tried to flash CM9 Alpha 5 using CW recovery.. downloaded the .zip...
Flashed it.. hit reboot... and it wont get past the mytouch splash screen.
I've tried flashing other roms, and other alphas.. but they all don't reboot into the rom.
I can still boot into recovery and get into ClockWork..
Any ideas on what I can flash or do to at least get any rom running on here... I'm not even picky at this point... I just wanted something like CM7 or some AOSP.
Thanks in advance.

1) This goes in General. I don't know why the mods can't just add a Q&A board to remove the n00b confusion.
2) Fastboot the ROM's boot.img before booting up.

You have to take the bootimage from the rom that you are using and put in a folder and name it so you can reconize it. You follow the command prompt instructions they give in this thread. You have to have some knowlege of a PC in order to be successful. I had the same problems as you did. You can get it to work... Do you know how to use the command prompt for your PC?

Last question before I fastboot, is it necessary to have the SDK or ADB to fastboot? Can I fastboot/flash the kernel using Hasoon's all-in-one-kit (the app I used to attain root)? Or is it too late since now the device wont boot and Hasoon "can't find the device"?
I have the boot.img I want in a place where I can locate it. Can I use the command prompt without the SDK/ADB?
Interestingly enough I was able to mount using recovery, and boot a new kernal... phone won't boot but at least it's stuck at a different splash screen lol "mikroms"..
I'm calling this progress.
*UPDATE*
Ok, got it!
I mounted the phone to my computer using recovery and used the Hasoon kit to flash the CM boot image.. then I rebooted and got the mikroms splash screen. That was because the last zip i flashed wasn't CM.. it was the MikRom..
so I went back into recovery, flashed CM.. now I'm good!

Of course not. 'Fastboot' is an 'ADB' command. BUT if Hasoon's tool 'can't find device'....that's an ADB error message and you probably don't have all the drivers installed that you need but he has the necessary files included for what you need for 'Unlocked" & recovering from a mess-up. You may as well go ahead & install ADB tho....you'll eventually need it.

I believe what you did is 'Flash' a ROM from MikROMs but the kernel didn't go because you have S-On. Take that same '.zip' you just flashed, look inside it and put the file named 'boot.img' where you can find it in the windows 'path' and THEN
'fastboot flash boot boot.img' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508556
You should boot up fine then.

can I install a custom rom with unlocked bootloader?[SOLVED]

hi, I just got an unlocked htc inspire and I would like to know if there is any way to install a custom rom without root access. I tried to root it with several tools including the Easy Ace Root Tool and I can't get it rooted. tried from windows with several tools and from linux too with no success. I have rooted other phones in a few minutes ; but for some unknow reason I can't root this one. the bootloader is already unlocked (is has a big pink "unlocked" at the top of the bootloader) and it has also cwm v 5.x... installed. I was thinking of wiping all data and install a custom rom from the sd card, after all I guess I don't need su privileges from the bootloader. but I have found some threads where people who has done it, get stuck on htc screen at boot. so at this point I don't know what to do. any suggestion?
When flashing a ROM on a phone with an unlocked bootloader, you need to flash it in recovery, then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.
you need to flash it in recovery

Yes I did. I searched for Ace Think Tank and found this good thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31211732&postcount=396&nocache=1&z=8270731476524836
but for some reason it didn't work for me. When it started the 4ext Touch Recovery flashing, it stopped with an error. I guess it was in conflict with CWM which I had installed, I am not sure. But he also explains on his post that the "recommended way" is to flash it with the Advanced Ace Hack Kit; but first you need to get the bootloader locked back. That was what I was trying to avoid but since I had no option I used Easy Ace Root Tool to lock the bootloader (Option 5). Then I downloaded AAHK(the last version I could find googling) and I finally got the phone rooted and installed a custom rom. Here are the links for the tools I used:

In Dying Need of Help

I seriously hope that someone can help me. I have been trying to root and update my HTC Inspire for four days now and have not had ANY luck. I have watched every single youtube video, read countless threads, visited numerous websites and I have not had any luck. I REALLY want to update my phone to ICS and eveything I have searched tells me I have to root it first. Obviously this is my first time rooting and I am not having any luck. I have Jailbroke countless iPhones with ease but rooting is so much more complicated to me. Does anyone have any info to help me out? Links? Step-by-step instructions? ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if I have tried the Ace Think Tank. I have managed to Unlock my Bootloader and download CWM. Through CWM I downloaded and installed this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461
But its NOT ICS which is what I'm wanting to do.
As for the methods I have tried they are:
Ace Advanced Hack Kit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377905
Poot
And a few more I am unable to think of.
It took me forever just to learn how to install CWM but through Ace Hack Kit I was able to by going into options.
I've also had the issue of my computer not reading my phone while it was in HBoot mode or recovery mode.
So thats where I am now and I now I am trying to upgrade to ICS.
Darn I'm rusty. Do you have whatchamacallit installed on your computer? Adb.... Phew, took me a bit to remember that

Okay, you need some clarification.
AAHK1 is retired and unsupported. It won't work for you without some fiddling. It's used to get S-Off. Since you already unlocked your bootloader, you don't need it to flash a custom ROM.
The stock firmware you tried to flash won't be ICS. DHD stock firmware ends with GB.
The custom ROM you tried to flash (as well as any other custom ROM) requires that you: 1. flash it in CWM. 2. fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip.

Okay so now I understand why AAHK1 is not working for me. I did not realize that it was unsupported. Also, the only reason I flashed the DHD stock firmware is just to get my phone rooted since I was unable to figure it out myself. Do you know of a ROM that has ICS that I can flash or do I have to install the original stock ROM without it being rooted then root it myself and install another ROM that has ICS?
I've learned how to flash a custom ROM. I have CWM downloaded thanks to youtube and the video also showed me how to flash a ROM. So I am able to do that.
You don't need root to flash a ROM, just an unlocked or S-Off bootloader. You have an unlocked one, so that works. Flash a ROM from CWM, then fastboot flash the boot.img in the ROM zip. The Ace Think Tank thread has links for that.
