[Q] Update Nexus S from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3 manually with a broken power button - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone
I own a Nexus s I9020 T-mobile. and I'm using it on Vodafone.
My power button stopped working a month back and I'm using widgetlocker lockscreen to unlock.
I did not receive the OTA for ICS last month and i would like to have it on my phone by doing the update manually.
Is there a way to do the update manually with a broken power button ?
Thanks

There is a clockwork recovery with touchscreen interface I can't remember where I saw it though. So you could use that to flash the ota. Or you could flash the boot and system images directly through adb if they have been posted somewhere. You will have to root your phone before you can use these methods

thanks .. but I think the touch based clockwork recovery is only avilable for Galaxy Nexus and more over I dont want to root my phone unless it is absolutely necessary .. because i'll have to re-install all my apps
is there any possible way to do it without rooting ?

The Clockwork Recovery you are looking for is named TWRP (latest is Version 2.0.0). Look at the offical site - http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 - choose your device (NS or NS4G) and install via adb
Good luck

should my device be rooted for this ?
and after installing clockwork recovery how do I flash the update.zip file via clockwork, any guide ?

I have a new posted guide which should be useful for you, but you have to have it rooted first.

will try it out .. just hope I don't brick my phone 'coz im going to root my phone for the first time
looks like you have gone back to CM7 from ICS
should I overlook ICS too, coz im pretty happy with GB right now.

You don't need to flash TWRP. In clockwork mod recovery back is back, menu is down, search is select, home is up.

even to flash ClockworkMod or TWRP, first you will need to unlock the bootloader right ?
for this again the need for power button arises..

[Q] [i9020T] Stuck at 'Google' & unlocked padlock screen after boot

My Nexus S i9020T won't boot past the Google splash screen* (with an unlocked padlock at the bottom) after I unlocked to boot loader and tried to root it. I'm using a Mac but I can boot into Win7 if need be.
How do I diagnose this and obviously how can I recover the os? Thanks in advance!
Facts:
-Running 2.3.4 before unlock/root attempt
-Booted fine after the unlock but the root screwed something up
-There were errors in terminal during the process (ERROR: could not get pipe properties)
*=samsunghub.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/nexus-s-handson-google.jpg
Sorry if out smarting the spam bot is breaking any rules.
I'm guessing you flashed a boot.img to try and root it?
That's what screwed up.
Take battery out, put it back in, hold volume up and power at the same time to get to Bootloader.
Flash the latest cwm recovery, boot to recovery. mount the internal usb,
go to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
download: http://android.clients.google.com/p...206299fe6.signed-soju-ota-121341.da820629.zip (Model: i9020T Full Rom: GRJ22, KD1 )
put it in the root of the internal sd.
boot back up to bootloader and start it, it will auto wipe/restore back to stock 2.3.4
Thanks that did it.
EDIT: I was using this guide and got to step 17, then everything went bad. As I understand it, I am unlocked but not rooted at this point, correct? If so what's the easiest way of rooting from here? (Also, does root=super user?)

Yes flashing the superuser zip = root.
What version of CWM recovery did you install?

3.0.0.5, tho its not on my device anymore since I refreshed it.
Use this newer version from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039584
3.0.0.5 has issues. Doesn't flash correctly many times. 3.0.2.4 works much better
Alright I've installed the new version and flashed "su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip". How do I know if I'm rooted?
Boot up ur phone and you should have an su app.
Download titanium backup ans check if you have problems.you can also install busybox while using it.

can I restore my phone to my backup in ICS ??

Hi
1) as you know that the ICS is out now but its official (no root). So, If i update my phone from (Cyanogen mod 2.3.7) to the ICS, and then I want to restore my phone & I want to return back to my rom('cyanogen' restore from backup) can I do that even if my phone (ICS) doesn't have root(since, there is a problem i though with rooting now) ???
2) Also, can i install a new Rom(when its available) even when my device not rooted ??
Thanks alot...
to Q1
Of course you can.
You can still boot into bootloader(power + volume up).
In bootloader you can use fastboot to flash the recovery.
Then DO NOT reboot into normal boot,BOOT into recovery DIRECTLY from bootloader.
Then here comes the CWM.
to Q2,you have recovery now, nothing can stop you.

For i9023,you don't need to be stock rom,
There is a NANDROID backup which is official OTA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396224
Other models will need stock ROM.

Make sure you're using a perm root method. and make sure you have the correct updated SU application. My root wouldn't come through because I didn't have the latest SU.
Hopefully I helped.

By default, any recovery you flash on the system will be gone by the next reboot. This is a security measure the android os does I think.
1. You can flash a ROM. Anyone. I prefer aokp or cna. That way the recovery sticks (the recovery sticks on all the ROMs besides stock)
OR
P.S. You will need the latest cwm recovery
2. So all you need to do is to flash the recovery of your choice. I would recommend CWM for this short guide. Then once flashed go to the recovery make a backup. Then if it reboots flash the same recovery again. Boot into it and restore that backup. When you restore it and go reboot system now it should come up with a menu saying recovery flash fix (or something around those lines). Hit/navigate to yes and you should get a sticky recovery from there. BTW I have not tried this method.
You cannot blame me for bricking, damaging or done anything to your phone
Hope this helps.
Regards,
UselessSniper001
P.S. I don't know how root isn't sticking. I mean if you have flashed the su is the recovery already well then you are all set to go. Unless you haven't actually flashed the su in the recovery. Then flash the recovery from your PC boot into the recovery and flash the su files in the recovery. Reboot and enjoy. Then follow this guide above. Or follow this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875875&page=2
I finally figured out the SU and CWM I was flashing was ancient so I found the newest and they stuck with help of the fix ya mentioned inside CWM... Thanks

Keep root with JB update?

I updated via Keis (bad mistake!) and lost my root. Even worse, I lost the ability to boot into cmd -- every time I do the Control + power routine I get booted into Android Recovery. Without the ability to get my tablet into download mode, I can't connect with Odin.
Please help --
Either........ is there another way to boot into download mode?
Or........... is there a way to install cmd on my tablet without using odin?
Please....... I am not new to rooting but I need a bit of detailed description. I'm very afraid of bricking my lovely tablet.
thanks,
Barb

Thanks for the response -- however the process you describe does not work after this Kies upgrade. Volume down + power does not get me into download mode -- instead I get stuck in the Android system recovery (3e). (Same with the volume up+power.)
My only options in this Android sytem recovery are to:
reboot
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
I am wondering -- what if I were to place the clockword mod recovery zip file on my sd card and then use "apply update from external storage", or simply reboot.
Any thoughts or suggestions? I was also told I might be able to get into download mode through adb.
Thanks again for dialogue.
Barbara
No chance... Stock recovery needs the zip files to have samsung approval, not only that but it won't allow a different region rom to be flashed either.... Looks like you screwed the pooch on this little puppy...

So just to clarify, you are saying that it doesn't matter whether I can get into download mode or not (which I was able to do, with ADB), because ANY clockwork mod recovery file that I find will be unloadable (because it won't "play" with stock recovery)? Is that correct?
Don't want to sound argumentative, but does that mean that anyone who upgrades their firmware via "official Samsung" will be unable to root in the future? That's not too cool.
But if so, I can live with it.
Again, I appreciate your time.
Barb
I know with the S3 there is a root tool that allows rooting via ADB but I don't believe this has been developed for the Note 10.1 as yet. Everything is done via ODIN... Unless you wish to try the 1st method from this thread to get root access - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152 - then install a version of CWM manually...
Stock root is very picky about what it will or wont flash.... Even if you have a stock rom, if the CSC oodes, region, doesn't match it will error out...

No........ that's the goofy part of it. I had an upgrade waiting for me (under "settings, upgrade" and so I stupidly assumed it was the official jellybean. Wrong, wrong! I was simply upgraded to 4.0.4. I can't see any noticeable changes, except for the Android Recovery system having booted out my Clockwork recovery (and the root, of course.)
I've decided to wait a week or so until I get the official jellybean and then decide what to do.
It will also have given you a new template in s-notes - landscape and the scroll bar... It will also have given you the ability to use an exFAT formatted sd card... There were a few other tweaks but not too much...

How to get Custom Recovery on rooted G2? [Noob]

So I recently rooted my G2 to remove the bloatware apps and maybe install CM 11. I downloaded ROM Manager and I tried to install the CWM recovery through there but it seems like it's not doing anything. Every time I press "Reboot into Recovery", it restarts into the stock recovery (I'm assuming). And this recovery doesn't have an option to install from .zip, which means I can't install the CWM recovery. It only has install from SD card, which doesn't have anything in it, install from cache and install from adb. I have CM 11 running on my nexus 4 ( I used the installer) and that has a CWM recovery so I know what it looks like.
Am I doing something wrong or missing a step? Is there another way to do it?
Thanks
what firmware does your phone currently have on it? That will determine what method you will need to use to get a recovery.

That was exactly what I needed. The issue with stock KitKat is the bootloader is locked and the way we got around it with JB has been patched. There are some amazing people though that found a way to downgrade the bootloader and kernel to get around this. You can find the very simple and easy to use app over here. I recently used it myself and it literally takes about 30 seconds to do and you will have TWRP 2.7 when its all done
