Sorry guys, I know this has been covered, but I can't seem to find what I need via searching. I read forums more than I post so forgive me if I have done anything wrong. I am def an amateur when it comes to these things but I do okay.
I recently rooted my verizon gs3 4.3 with towelroot. It is actually just an old phone that I wanted to root and sell. Anyway, like an idiot I tried to install clockworkmod recovery from the clockworkmod app, my phone rebooted and I got the "unauthorized software" message from verizon. The phone will go into download mode. I need a little help finding the correct file to download and flash with odin to fix this. I'm sure its been covered but all of the download links for the file I have found have given me download errors. I have never bricked a phone before and I really want to fix this thing and sell it. Any help.

Follow these instructions and it should work.
verizon 4.3 gs3 soft brick update.
Okay this is where I'm at now. I finally got the phone to reboot into the regular system, I can boot into odin mode but not recovery mode, recovery mode give me the "unauthorized software" warning from verizon. When this happens I can do a battery pull, boot into odin mode, then press volume down to reboot the phone and the normal system comes up. I still have root with towel root. So when I tried to install cwm recovery from the cwm app that's where my problem started. This is my first time tweaking a phone with a locked boot loader. I can do anything with the phone when it's booted up to the regular system, except a factory data reset, if I try I get the "unauthorized software" screen. I tried un rooting with supersu, which seemed to work, because root checker reported that there was no root access. So I Re rooted with towelroot, reinstalled supersu from Play store. Now I have root access again, but still cannot go to recovery mode, or do a factory data reset.
That being said, since I can boot the phone the system, and i have root access with root explorer and es file explorer (with root files enabled). Is there a way to go in and remove all the files and things that cwm app installed when attempting to install cwm recovery. Basically I'll be thrilled to be able to factory reset and use stock recovery, I can deal with that, as long as I have root access so I can debloat and run root apps. So what can I do to get back to stick recovey, basically the state the phone was in before my dumb self tried to install custom recovery with a locked boot loader.
Sorry the post is long, I am def a amateur phone rooter, but through five devices this is my very first real issue.
Also thanks to all who contribute to this forum, I've been saved several times from info you guys post. So THANK YOU!
@sdevans80 Did you flash the above file that @SlimSnoopOS recommended? That should have fixed your stock recovery.

Sorry, I meant to update sooner, I tried to flash stock image with odin several times with no luck. Eventually I connected to kies on my laptop, updated the phone from 4.3 to 4.4.2 which fixed every thing, after doing that I reinstalled towelroot apk and rooted the phone again. Rooting a phone by tapping an icon on a screen, and then not even having to reboot, is really cool. Thanks for the help guys.

So I originally rooted my s3 with the GS3_debugfs-root_r2.7z method, flashed CWM and unlocked my bootloader. Since then i have flashed several roms and all was well until a couple days ago when i decided to restore my first backup in order to retrieve some data. I was still on G7 and kept getting the notification of the HE update. Even though I excepted the OTA and let it fail in CWM i kept get getting the notice almost every time i turn on my phone. I was getting so annoyed with it that i decided to flash a rom with HE in hopes that that would stop the OTA. In this whole process of restoring my backup my bootloader must have locked and when i flashed the rom I got stock on that "unauthorized software, contact Verizon screen". It freaked me out when i couldn't boot into recovery.
I followed the whole Odin, root66 method and was able to save my phone...phew... but have a couple questions now.
1) my phone has the superuser app and it shows that it cannot be uninstalled, like a system app but yet root checker says i am not rooted? Why is this.
2) Would installing supersu and updating binaries get me rooted again?
3) This one is just for curiosity..The message when i soft bricked my phone said you have unauthorized software and to go see a Verizon store. Would they really have been able help me or just tell me i am SOL
ps. Thank you to the XDA community for sharing instructions like the one i used to save my phone.

2: That could work, but so should loading the default SU and updating binaries.
3: They would not have been likely to help you, and may have even voided your warranty.
Going to a store would have yielded a bunch of head scratching and them telling you to file an insurance claim.
In the future if you want to block ota's freeze sdm and fwupdate in titanium.
I am using a Samsung Galaxy Pocket (GT-S5300) which has Android Gingerbread 2.3.6. I rooted the phone by applying update.zip through the recovery console. I installed titanium backup free, and ROM manager free, but quickly uninstalled them after I saw that I did not really need them on this phone. I never installed clockwork recovery, i never flashed anything. I then unrooted the phone by repeating the steps I did to root, using the unroot.zip (renaming first to update.zip) That worked and Superuser app was removed after reboot.
I never connected to a PC to do any of this, simply did it from the recovery boot.
Now what I want to know is....can Samsung tell my phone has been rooted? If so, what can I do to remove any trace of it?
Thank you. I know this question has been asked before and answered but I could not find an answer which dealt specifically with my situation where nothing was ever flashed.
Get a root checker app and see if it detects root. If you haven't flashed anything you should fine.

I don't know if they can detect rooted phones. But I do know that if you unroot your phone you regain your warranty.
cs098 - I'm sure a Root Checker app would not detect root, as it has been unrooted. But what I am asking is whether Samsung could detect if the phone had been rooted in the past.
Athoomas - How do you know that the warranty is regained if the phone is unrooted? Can you point me to any link online stating this for Samsung company?
Thank you for the replies!
They really can't determine if your phone was rooted before

Recover to factory settings
If you've successfully unrooted your phone it is still possible to see the changes you've made when you phone was rooted. So the best thing you can do is recover to factory settings..
Its very unlikely but if you wanted to be sure a complete factory reset would be your best bet.
Alot of samsung devices have a flash counter that is designed to count the number of times a custom ROM has been flashed, however this is normally by passed anyway (and infact can be reset).
But seeing as you just rooted im sure you will be fine
I have a Samsung gs3 that bricked on me last week while trying to do some updates. It was rooted and running automated backups twice a week. I've now got a GS5 running 5.0, and I'm leery of rooting just yet. Is there any hope of recovering any portion of my missing app data without rooting?
Thanks!
Rooting on gs5 is safe. I rooted the day after I bought it.
Rooting is the best way to get app data and honestly it's safe.
Just follow instructions on the forum and you should be good to go.
Which procedure did you use? It sounds like there could be issued coming from 5.0, as opposed to starting at 4.4.4 and flashing forward...

look in the forums. I used CF Auto Root through ODIN.
I started with OA6 (full tar) and did it from there.
OA6 tar.
CF Auto Root
KTOONSEZ TWRP Recovery
and then MOAR 6.1 (with extra stuff)
then KTOONSEZ kernal (some folks stick with stock, FYI)
Ok, I feel like I should understand what you wrote, but I can't quite sort out how to get there... Given how I screwed up last week and bricked my s3, I'm a little gun shy.
I just want to get to rooted stock, but it appears I need to go back to 4.4.x/NE5 to root to start with, right? Then flash a custom recovery, (trip Knox, which is fine).
From there, how do I get back to 5.0/OA6 ?
I know enough to be dangerous (as evidenced by the brick on my desk)...

Let me see if I can help
You can root the S5 from Android 5.0 (Lollipop), you don't have to downgrade.
Download this file to your PC: http://download.chainfire.eu/408/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltespr-kltespr-smg900p.zip
It's CF-Auto Root for the Sprint S5 on Lollipop. Unzip it on your PC using something like 7-Zip.
After you unzip it, use Odin to root your S5. Put your phone in download mode by shutting it down (pull the battery, don't use any kind of menu to boot into download mode. Put battery back in and go into download mode by holding Volume DOWN, Home button and Power button. You'll see a screen to press Volume UP to continue. Hook up your phone via USB.
Start Odin. You should see a blue COM setting in the upper left side of Odin. If you don't, then you need to install the USB drivers on your PC. (If that's the case, stop there as you'll need to find and install them.
If everything is ok, then click the PDA or AP button (depends on which version of Odin you have) and browse to the file you un-zipped and select the .tar.md5 file and click Start. When it finishes, it will reboot your phone. At this point I don't remember if CF-Autoroot includes SuperSU, but if not, download from the Playstore and you're rooted.
As far as your original issue of wanting to restore app data, it isn't advisable as your wanting to restore from the S3 on Kitkat to the S5 on Lollipop. You're just asking for headaches if you do it. But if you're going to try, install a custom recovery and do a nanoid backup first.
Hope this helps
Thanks for that! That does help.
I almost think I need to just buy a replacement s3, root it, pull all the backup data back down, transfer it to the new phone, then turn back around and sell it...? I thought I had most of the data I needed died on the SD card, but there were apparently a couple apps I never set up properly to do so, and those are the ones I'm trying to get back.
I have a new Samsung Galaxy S III (S968C) with StraightTalk and it is my first Android device. Right now it has Android 4.1.2. Can I get a guide to root and install CyanogenMod 13 or Android 5/6 on it? Thanks in advanced.

Rooting your phone is actually really easy, I haven't flashed any roms yet, so I don't know about that.
First check your baseband version in settings (about phone), it should end in either H1 or H2.
If it ends in H1, then just download Towelroot or Cydia Impactor. Towelroot is an app that will root your phone, while Cydia Impactor will have to be installed on your computer and will root you phone over a USB connection.
If your baseband version ends with H2, then you will have to flash a custom recovery (which you will probably want to do anyways). You will need to find a link for the version of TWRP recovery for the d2tfnvzw phone (it's somewhere on these forums, but I can't find it right now). Once you have the recovery file, you can flash it with Heimdall (cross-platform) or Odin (windows only). Then boot into recovery (power+home+vol up). From here you can do a full backup of your phone and when you reboot, it will ask you if you want to root.
If you need any clarifications, there is a lot more information in the forums, and I'm sure people can help you.
Also, if you ever try flashing CM, I'm pretty sure that you will need a SIM card in your phone in order to have data. Just find any old SIM card and it should work (I have not tried this).

@arnoue is 100% correct, do what he posted and you'll be fine, if you go for the SIM so you can use all the new 5.x and 6.x ROMs you will need to do a couple of minor steps to get data and MMS both working. I can help you with that if you can't find it.
Here is the d2tfnvzw TWRP for Odin.
d2tfnvzw TWRP.tar.md5
Here is the same recovery in a flashable zip to be flashed through recovery for anyone that has an older TWRP or CWM and want to update to a better recovery. Flash in recovery the same as a ROM and then find the reboot recovery option in recovery, then it will reboot into the TWRP that was just flashed, it will be retained after that, then you can reboot or flash or whatever you choose from there.

I have a straight talk samsung galaxy s3 sph-s968c. I really want to root this phone. I have no access to a computer of my own so I'm trying to root with no pc. I've tried towelroot and it said my device wasn't supported. Tried framaroot neither of the exploits would work. Tried z4root and it would just run for a min then go back to my homepage. So I'm wondering is there any other way I can root my phone from my phone. Thanks in advance and if I posted this in the wrong place sorry....

Supposedly the kingoroot app(not kingroot) will root our device.
See this thread.
If it doesn't work then you may be out of luck without a PC.

Title says it, apologies in advance for my noobiness on the entire topic of rooting. Got lucky and my previous device was supported via kingroot. Just looking for SuperSU permissions so I can enable my hotspot really.
This phone is through straight talk btw. I've tried Kingroot, iRoot, and quite a few others to no avail. I don't currently have internet due to me moving to the butt-crack of nowhere, Tried srsroot but seems like it interferes with USB tether and says it's successfully rooted but nothing happens upon reboot.
Anyone had any success with this? Thanks in advance.
Anyone?

CF- Autoroot might do it. I see that it works on other variants for the J7. Here's a link with CF-Autoroot and detailed instructions. Hope it works for you. Let me know how it goes.

Is this your first time rooting a device. after srsroot says successfully rooted did you verify root by going into playstore and trying a root check app.

I tried srsroot 5.1 multiple exploit and it said rooted. I open root checker and it said phone wasn't rooted. I also tried dr. Phone and they didn't have a working root method for j7 sky pro and i was desperate enough to try king root. None of these worked. The guy than mention c.f. auto root, thats for a version of the j7 that was released in other countries. Those variants of the j7 have exoynus processors and us version have snap-dragon processors so the root procedure might brick your phone.

When ever I get some free time I'm going to try using adb commands to try and root.
Hopefully not too much longer before someone can root this thing... I'm also looking!
wondering if anyone has seen this video or tried it??
Code:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtktE0jccnw
I can't open the link but all the videos iv seen on YouTube seems to be j700's and other variants not for s727v.l From my research the devices are a listed under samsung j models but the they all have different hardware, i.e. boards, processors, chipsets,. I did a cross referience with cf-auto root to try and find a divice with the same hardware and builds, there wasnt any other device with the same hardware that would suggest compatibility. Cf-auto root flashes a root file to your device and if it's not compatible you could completely brick your device
Hello, First of, you shouldn't have used kingroot whatever the situation was
However https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inkwired.droidinfo&hl=en
download this and capture the system and device tray
Yeah but it was worth a shot. I figured if it worked I could replace it with superSu. I will post those specs In a few. When ever. I get time and free WiFi in going to try adv root
System and device
I'm going to try adb root method when ever I get the time
Trying this again. I try posting last night but it didn't go through

Verizon bootloader is most of time locked you can't flash it.
I may have a method for rooting s727vl. I can't test until I get home where I will have unrestricted data in case something goes wrong. I'm gonna keep this short and simple assuming everyone have
knowledge of using odin.
Developer option usb debugging oem unlock no frp or passwords
Download odin
Download latest superSu, this isn't the same as superuser in the playstore. It's used for rooting systemless root os. Yes that what marshmallow is.
After downloading supersu place it on your phones sd card
This is what I'm not sure on. Download clockwork mod RECOVERY. Zip , not the one in the playstore. And place on pc
Use odin to flash cwm to s727vl
Please refer to guide on installing cwm
After flashing cwm go to it in recovery mode and use cwm to flash the supersu zip file and reboot phone. It could take a few minutes but it should boot with root access. Or wait for auto reboot.
What I'm not sure on is cwm compatibility with s727vl, I couldn't find a yeah or nay on compatibility. Cwm say it's compatible with any android.
Hopefully this will work. Make sure u have your data backed up and your stock rom in case things go south. If anyone try this please let me know the result. I'm anxious to try it but I travel a lot and I can't afford to have data throttled by downloading everything I need and I can't risk doing this until I'm i get home.
