I am using a Samsung Galaxy Pocket (GT-S5300) which has Android Gingerbread 2.3.6. I rooted the phone by applying update.zip through the recovery console. I installed titanium backup free, and ROM manager free, but quickly uninstalled them after I saw that I did not really need them on this phone. I never installed clockwork recovery, i never flashed anything. I then unrooted the phone by repeating the steps I did to root, using the unroot.zip (renaming first to update.zip) That worked and Superuser app was removed after reboot.
I never connected to a PC to do any of this, simply did it from the recovery boot.
Now what I want to know is....can Samsung tell my phone has been rooted? If so, what can I do to remove any trace of it?
Thank you. I know this question has been asked before and answered but I could not find an answer which dealt specifically with my situation where nothing was ever flashed.
Get a root checker app and see if it detects root. If you haven't flashed anything you should fine.

I don't know if they can detect rooted phones. But I do know that if you unroot your phone you regain your warranty.
cs098 - I'm sure a Root Checker app would not detect root, as it has been unrooted. But what I am asking is whether Samsung could detect if the phone had been rooted in the past.
Athoomas - How do you know that the warranty is regained if the phone is unrooted? Can you point me to any link online stating this for Samsung company?

Recover to factory settings
If you've successfully unrooted your phone it is still possible to see the changes you've made when you phone was rooted. So the best thing you can do is recover to factory settings..
Its very unlikely but if you wanted to be sure a complete factory reset would be your best bet.
Alot of samsung devices have a flash counter that is designed to count the number of times a custom ROM has been flashed, however this is normally by passed anyway (and infact can be reset).
But seeing as you just rooted im sure you will be fine

As the title says, I have the Samsung Galaxy SII Sprint's variation. I rooted my phone when it was on the version before Gingerbread EL29. I used the SuperOneClick method to root my phone and after doing that, 'Superuser' was installed on my phone. Everything was going fine until I accidentally updated my phone to Gingerbread 2.3.6 EL29 via Sprint's over-the-air update. I know it sounds dumb from me but I really knew that if I updated my phone I could mess up my root privileges, but that pop up update was showing up each 5 minutes, that in one of them I accidentally pressed 'install'. Now I have tried to unroot my phone with SuperOneClick but 'Superuser' is still there and when I access an app that requires root privileges like 'Wireless Tether' it says that my phone is not rooted. I also tried to do a factory reset and root again with 'SuperOneClick' but it freezes up (I guess it's because 'Superuser' is still there?) I was also thinking on installing a rooted rom but I don't know if I can install custom roms (I don't know if I have CWM and if it will mess up because I'm not rooted?..) Right now I just want to get the latest rooted stable release possible.. Sorry for extending myself but I wanted to give all the important details as possible as I am new in handling root phones and also in this forum. I will appreciate any help, thanks!

So I originally rooted my s3 with the GS3_debugfs-root_r2.7z method, flashed CWM and unlocked my bootloader. Since then i have flashed several roms and all was well until a couple days ago when i decided to restore my first backup in order to retrieve some data. I was still on G7 and kept getting the notification of the HE update. Even though I excepted the OTA and let it fail in CWM i kept get getting the notice almost every time i turn on my phone. I was getting so annoyed with it that i decided to flash a rom with HE in hopes that that would stop the OTA. In this whole process of restoring my backup my bootloader must have locked and when i flashed the rom I got stock on that "unauthorized software, contact Verizon screen". It freaked me out when i couldn't boot into recovery.
I followed the whole Odin, root66 method and was able to save my phone...phew... but have a couple questions now.
1) my phone has the superuser app and it shows that it cannot be uninstalled, like a system app but yet root checker says i am not rooted? Why is this.
2) Would installing supersu and updating binaries get me rooted again?
3) This one is just for curiosity..The message when i soft bricked my phone said you have unauthorized software and to go see a Verizon store. Would they really have been able help me or just tell me i am SOL

2: That could work, but so should loading the default SU and updating binaries.
3: They would not have been likely to help you, and may have even voided your warranty.
Going to a store would have yielded a bunch of head scratching and them telling you to file an insurance claim.
In the future if you want to block ota's freeze sdm and fwupdate in titanium.
Little backstory: A friend of mine had just recently bought a Razr Maxx HD on craigslist. The individual who sold him the phone had the phone rooted. My friend didn't want the phone rooted, and specifically asked the individual to unroot it. We used the application root checker to check if the phone was still rooted and it said the phone wasn't. My friend restored the phone to factory settings and it still had the superuser application installed. Now, I personally have rooted phones before and if I have all my information correct the process to root a phone requires you to over-write the factory/stock ROM and replacing it with a root-injected ROM. My friend wishes to have his phone completely stock. The kernel seems to be the right factory/stock one, but he and I are still concerned that it is still rooted. Although there's really no harm to rooting, he wishes to get the complete stock ROM on his device. Now, the question lol. Is there any danger to keeping the root-injected ROM on his device? Could we use ODIN to put the official stock ROM back on the device? Should he not even worry that his current ROM is root-injected?

Huh. Root is just access to system level commands, and usually some exploit within the stock rom is used to install and run SU/superuser. If it has wireless provider branding (boot screen says Verizon, for example) it's a stock rom... and you're fine, just delete the SU app if it bothers you.

I reboot the phone and it says droid but nothing about verizon. I am not sure if the Razr Maxx HD normally says verizon but my girlfriend has the phone and i will try it on hers to see if the rom is stock.
The problem is i am worried there are other things in this rom that are not the norm. It will not let you uninstall superuser at all. If you google superuser and you read about the app it does say in the App info that if the Rom you install has superuser in System/Apps then it cant be removed which is whats scaring me.
I really want the phone back to 100% factory stock as i bought this second hand and I cant take chances with anything weird in the OS.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The surest, easiest way to make sure it is stock is to reflash the phone using the Droid Razr HD Utility Tool, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970267. It will put the factory firmware back on the phone. Afterwards, there will be 2 OTA updates to install. The first one is an incremental bug fix update. The second is the JB update.
EDIT: The normal boot screen is the Motorola logo followed by the Droid animation.

I recently rooted my verizon gs3 4.3 with towelroot. It is actually just an old phone that I wanted to root and sell. Anyway, like an idiot I tried to install clockworkmod recovery from the clockworkmod app, my phone rebooted and I got the "unauthorized software" message from verizon. The phone will go into download mode. I need a little help finding the correct file to download and flash with odin to fix this. I'm sure its been covered but all of the download links for the file I have found have given me download errors. I have never bricked a phone before and I really want to fix this thing and sell it. Any help.

Follow these instructions and it should work.

Okay this is where I'm at now. I finally got the phone to reboot into the regular system, I can boot into odin mode but not recovery mode, recovery mode give me the "unauthorized software" warning from verizon. When this happens I can do a battery pull, boot into odin mode, then press volume down to reboot the phone and the normal system comes up. I still have root with towel root. So when I tried to install cwm recovery from the cwm app that's where my problem started. This is my first time tweaking a phone with a locked boot loader. I can do anything with the phone when it's booted up to the regular system, except a factory data reset, if I try I get the "unauthorized software" screen. I tried un rooting with supersu, which seemed to work, because root checker reported that there was no root access. So I Re rooted with towelroot, reinstalled supersu from Play store. Now I have root access again, but still cannot go to recovery mode, or do a factory data reset.
That being said, since I can boot the phone the system, and i have root access with root explorer and es file explorer (with root files enabled). Is there a way to go in and remove all the files and things that cwm app installed when attempting to install cwm recovery. Basically I'll be thrilled to be able to factory reset and use stock recovery, I can deal with that, as long as I have root access so I can debloat and run root apps. So what can I do to get back to stick recovey, basically the state the phone was in before my dumb self tried to install custom recovery with a locked boot loader.
Sorry the post is long, I am def a amateur phone rooter, but through five devices this is my very first real issue.
Also thanks to all who contribute to this forum, I've been saved several times from info you guys post. So THANK YOU!

Sorry, I meant to update sooner, I tried to flash stock image with odin several times with no luck. Eventually I connected to kies on my laptop, updated the phone from 4.3 to 4.4.2 which fixed every thing, after doing that I reinstalled towelroot apk and rooted the phone again. Rooting a phone by tapping an icon on a screen, and then not even having to reboot, is really cool. Thanks for the help guys.

Hello Everyone, my name is Joe. I have my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 running KitKat 4.4.2 with Towelroot ROOT. I have all the essentials, Titanium Backup(Free), Superuser, Busybox, etc. I just recently downloaded an app the let me unlock my Bootloader. It is called EZ Unlock or something of the sort. It successfully unlocked it, but using that Triangle app to reset my flash counter, it warned me about possible bricking after a reboot. Well, long story short, after a successful reset of the counter, and an attempt reboot into recovery, nothing. Screen doesn't light up, no ROM access, no Recovery, no download mode, nothing. So I tried to write a debrick.bin to my SD and fix it but that didn't do anything besides make the flash light up for a second as the battery was inserted. Is there anything that can be done? Should I bull**** Geek Squad and say I droped it and it didn't turn on so I can get it replaced altogether? (Lol) I'm am willing to try anything. I have backups of my user data on the SD from Titanium Backup that are now stored on my laptop as I was warned of corruption when writing the debrick file. So yea, please, anyone know of any methods? Greatly appreciate it hence I don't have a backup phone and have to wait until November of '14 to get a upgrade.
