here is new backup app from Koush. for non-rooted users. i am rooted so don't need. but, many of you may want to try it. it is out of beta, so may be old news to some. if you like free app, please buy upgrade and support dev.

But if people like it, I'll recommend it to non-rooted users.

A great app. I think it does basically the same thing as adb backup as it requires "pairing" with a PC when using for the first time. I used it for backing up before unlocking bootloader. Worked perfectly and was able to restore all my data on a custom rom.

That's why I wanted some feedback. When I see someone asking about backing up before rooting, I had recommended MyBackUp Pro. If this is better, will recommend it--

Hello everyone. There is a thread with a root toolkit, here.
But I can't seem to dowload the kits from the download tab. Nothing happens. I can't use direct download or torrent. None of them results in anything.
There no problem downloading from other sites, I have rebooted my router, restarted my PC, cleared cache and so on.
Any tips or alternate links?

We'll, you can do what you want. But you'll be better off in the long run if you learn to do it the right way. The n5 is a real easy device to root and rom. Learning to do those things rather than using a tool kit will save you a lot of headaches in the future

If you use a toolkit, you'll be back on here begging for help because you bricked your device. If you want to mod, either learn to do it the right way or don't bother at all. Save yourself and the XDA community the headache.

Just to reiterate the above, don't use toolkits. When you need help, it's much harder for us to explain how to fix things if you don't understand our "language".
Not sure how many other people that do this but if a first post says "toolkit" in it, I stop reading.

I'm not entirely sure where I said that I don't know how to do it either way. I've been rooting and installing custom ROMs and firmware since Nexus was first released. I just find it easier (I'm lazy) to use a one click toolkit to get it done. That doesn't mean I don't know how to backup and restore stock.
If I want to use a toolkit and ask for it I really can't understand the judging in here. It's my choice, and your conclusions are that I'm a noob because of it? yeah, what a great and "friendly" community this is. I might save you the headache cus this is just ridiculous.

It takes about two minutes to root without a toolkit. But of course you knew that already!

Relax, don't take it so personally. I get it, you're not a newb. When you come here asking about toolkits with a single-digit post count, it's a fair assumption. Either way I don't see the purpose of toolkits for a Nexus device. I encourage everyone not to use toolkits but to root the proper way. How hard is it to type "fastboot oem unlock" and "fastboot flash recovery recovery-twrp.img"? It's not like it's Samsung or something where you have to find exploits and hack to get it unlocked. Google gives us all the tools we need to unlock Nexus devices. You don't have to know how to code or anything to use the tools. There's nothing to gain by using one-click toolkits and root methods, only to lose as you never know exactly what they're doing under the hood. Toolkits cause more problems than they solve, especially when used by those with little to no experience. As someone else pointed as, when inexperienced users use toolkits and inevitably run into problems, it's difficult to explain how to fix it because they don't understand the steps we're telling them to take. It may as well be Greek to them. For these reasons I always discourage the use of toolkits.

Use MultiROM to test out various ROMs while still keeping your current setup. It's a great tool and the best way to try out new things.

I'm not sure. I only flashed one Lollipop ROM (N5X) via MultiROM, and the first build I flashed worked fine, but I was unable to flash newer builds so maybe that's why.

I don't user multirom so I have no first hand experience but from what I've seen, some (if not all) lollipop ROMs that are to be a secondary ROM on multirom, need an edit.

Learn to walk b4 you run. Read, read and do some more Reading on MANUAL ROOT, not all in one kits. These are great. I use then but you need to know the basics of communication with your phone in fastboot, incase of mistakes.
When you are ready make a full backup and an "efs" it's important to store the efs off the phone. Not sure what it is? Get Reading)
I could of named a kit but you would not find anything out. In an emergency (which happens) you would have to start learning things you should have-at the worst time. Good luck on your journey!

The first thing you need to do is install a custom recovery. Use twrp. Once you have that installed make a backup of your device with it. Then you can install a rom.

Got your pm. I don't respond to pm's nor do I do team viewer. It's not that hard to do. Hardest part is setting up adb/fastboot. Google 15 second adb install xda and skip the first part of the guide where you setup sdk.

An Idiots Guide to Getting a ROM on a new phone. - HELP

I want to say, first thanks for the responses, even tho I fully expect some will be trolls and jerks.
I have spent many hours reading, watching videos, scouring threads to find this answer - and I can't.
My n5 is lollipop'd up, and I think it's time to go to a ROM... Cataclysm for now as it seems to have exactly what I want/need.
Thing is, everything I read is either incomplete, confusing, for kit kat, or gives pretty varying info on how to go from COMPLETELY STOCK STATE to a rom.
DO you know of, or does there exist a LEGIT/TRUSTED video/guide from VERY STEP 1 (as in, stock and never altered) Lollipop to getting a ROM such as cataclysm on the phone.
The other part which confuses me is Cataclysm has root already? SO you dont have to do the step of rooting yourself, or is that not correct?
Again, I apologize for the uber rookie posting, but I have done a lot of reading, and unfortunately, most of it stinks.

The one gotcha: BACK YOUR /SDCARD FOLDER UP! Before you do anything do that. Back up your pictures and stuff. Maybe move everything to the cloud if you don't have a place locally to put it.

thanks for this... the one link inside there was EXACTLY what I needed, and literally was as clear and concise as anything id found in weeks of research.
read it, followed it, and got cataclysm on my phone, quickly and easily. LOVE THIS ROM.
also got the volume booster app on there, which seriously helps w the tunes.
love it, and thanks guys! backed up my pics, but forgot to backup my music. no biggie, had it on all on a HD.

Quick Question: Now that Cataclysm is set up to my liking, w settings etc, apps...
Should I make a nandroid backup in TWRP? Would this be the point to do it?

if you know what nandroid exactly then it is a good idea to use it, otherwise it may cause more harm then help, such as wipe out your efs if you do something very wrong.

1) boot into recovery (I use twrp)
2) click "backup"
3) make sure system, data and boot are checked
4) rename to whatever (cataclysmbackup)
5) swipe to backup
6) reboot
HOw would I potentially wipe out efs, etc?

Sure it won't wipe out efs when backup, what I mean is when you restore the backup and do something wrong.

What? The only way you mess up your efs by restoring is to restore an efs from another device. @Soulfly3. Making a nandroid at this point is an excellent idea. I highly recommend it. Just use twrp's default backup and you'll be fine.

Data transfer error, fault cable, PC hang when flashing, there are lot of chance to fail.
Sure nandroid is good, what I wanna say is understand what it backup, and what to restore when need, if not and just do the backup without fully understanding, then when something goes wrong it may become a disaster.
P.s. saw so many nooby ask for help when the flashing goes wrong.

I'm not understanding you. When you make a nandroid you make it from your device and it stores on your device and you restore it from your device. Not sure where the faulty cables and pc hang comes from.

THanks so much @jd1639 . I did make a Nandroid backup... had no idea it'd be 3+ GB. wow hahaha.
That's ok... Now I assume I should also transfer/copy it over to my PC, just for ultimate safety... correct? If so, is it as simple as c/p the folder?
What Im reading says yes, it's that simple... then some others are complicating it saying no no, you gotta take these extra steps.. gah

Yes you can copy the backup folder. When you copy it back to your device just make sure to copy it back to twrp/backups/your serial number folder

As you know it's a big file so a lot will have to do how much space you have on the device. But I usually leave them on my device with one recent one copied to the pc too just in case.

I have. They all seem to be issues from 1-3yrs ago... nothing too current.
Perhaps it was a bug in the roms/recovery programs that has been fixed?

I think Ill do this as well. I have the space on the device, Im not worried about that, really.

You can backup to PC and restore directly from PC long time ago.

Same as any toolkit, it is good to understand what it actually does.
I recap last time, nandroid is good, but you also need to understand what it actually does before give it a go.

Need metroPCS Unlock Device APK

Can somebody pull the Unlock Device APK from a stock metro rom? Im on Katana and need this app to unlock my device. Please and thank you.

Make a TWRP backup.
Flash back to stock using the provided zips.
Unlock your device.
Root your device.
Install TWRP again.
Flash your backup.

Been looking all over for this and it is not easy to find. If you find it, post a link.
Or call Metro directly. I may be doing this soon.

I know somebody has to have a stock rooted G Stylo from metro. I recently ended my employment at metro so I know longer have easy access to phones. Can someone please upload the APK?

That simple solution would be to take the earlier guys advice. It doesn't take very long and you would have been done days ago.

The simple solution isn't always simple for somebody on fixed bandwidth with no actual internet or ISP, a 2GB file is not an option for me at this point. A small APK that's mere KB's is a much better alternative. Thanks though.

Just upload the damn apk give the guy if u have it what's so hard in that, he says he can't manage a 2gb file gosh.. U people nowadays

I actually ended up in a hotel as of recently, so I just used the wifi while enjoying the stay. Needless to say, while being "lazy" I managed to pull the APK from the stock rom and upload it to devhost.

One problem. It doesn't seem to play well. Installation fails and I'm not quite sure how to make it work. If anyone needs anything else from me, please let me know. I made a backup of the stock rom.
We will have to see though, being that im so damn lazy.

MetroPCS Official Device Unlock APP - SOLVED
This will work if you have a un-rooted MetroPCS device
1. Please back up all your data ( any pictures, video contacts etc).
2. NOTE This step will delete all your data and wipe your phone clean - Do a factory data reset : - go to setting and search for "reset"
when your phone restarts it will load up the MetroPCS stock ROM and you will have all of the MetroPCS app suite including the official MetroPCS device unlock app.

Hope this helps. Thank the guy who made a flashable zip of the ROM so it was much easier to extract.
