[Q] Advice on water damage. Pics. - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my girlfriend had her Moto G in her purse and a water bottle opened and got her phone wet. I completely. disassembled the phone and dried everything out with a hair dryer. There is still a section of the screen that has a weird mark on it and the screen will appear to flicker every so often. I know for a fact the connection is dry so what else could it be? She's using my Nexus 4 for now. Eeeekkk. She's clumsy and that phone is glass all around!!!

spot could be because water maybe got into the lcd itself? Or maybe the digitizer is right up against it

Thanks. Any way to fix?

it's probably because you used a hair dryer to dry the phone

In theory it can be fixed, but it's very hard to do and you may end up destroying the lcd. You may have gotten water between the layers of the lcd and it won't dry easy and even if it does it will probably stay as a permanent blob due to the minerals in the water.
The way to fix it is to open the lcd itself and separate the layers until you reach the blob, then wash it gently with 99% alcohol and dry gently with warm air. I've done this several times, but few it didn't end well, depends on the lcd itself.
My advice is to disassemble the phone and leave it in an open-air bag of rice and leave in in a warm place for 3 days or so.
As a last resort you can try what I said above, just make sure to note how the layers were put and which side, so you don't mess it that way.
Good luck.

It's weird. I woke up today and it was completely gone. Either the drop of water that was in there migrated to somewhere else in the phone, or it evaporated. Thanks for the help.

[Q] Water under screen - Am I screwed?

So here's the situation:
I was applying a screen protector from bestskinsever (huge fan of their stuff). You need to apply a small amount of soapy water to correctly apply the film. I finished applying it evenly and then turned my phone on, only to find (to my horror) that there was what appeared to be moisture under the screen, which made the screen look terrible when the backlight shone through it.
I immediately turned the phone back off, pulled the battery, and stuck the phone into a plastic bag full of rice (a solution I had heard of at some point). My hope is that the water will eventually evaporate and be soaked up by the rice, returning my phone to it's previous state of awesomeness.
What do you think the chances are of that? None of the water sensors on the phone or the battery were tripped by the water, but the screen looks pretty ugly as of last night.
Anyone else have to deal with this? Did I do everything right once discovering the issue?
Thoughts welcome.

I had this happen with my mytouch 4g. I applied a skinomi protector and when I turned on the screen I noticed the moisture under the screen and it made the screen look discolored. It did get a lot better after a few days but it still had a water stain on the LCD.

Don't think your standing a good chance. Are you sure the water is underneath the screen and not between the protector and the screen? If I were you, I'd remove the backcover. That frees the device's sides so the water might run out there. You might also try to suck it out with a strong vacuum cleaner Just be careful not to scratch your Sensation.
I strongly suggest you NOT to use vacuum cleaner because it may cause damage to delicate hardware of the phone. Because Vacuum cleaner creates static electricity.
As for the water are you sure it is under the screen not between protector and screen?
If i were you i would considering removing screen protector. If it is still there it means it is under scteen and since you cannot disassemble lcd screen i would remove back cover and pray for it to be evaporate.
Hope this help
whole reason why I stay away from water solution application based SPs.
they may stick better and all but the risk...
someone needs to come up with a better solution for these "military grade" SPs.
op, sorry to hear about your phone. I hope it fixes it self. if not, hope you have insurance. (I know it would suck shelling out another $130 for the deductible when you just bought the phone but...)

Are you sure? Never heard of that...
yes dude i don't mean to offend you if i did then sorry but once i used to clean my computer from dust with a vacuum cleaner or a hair dryer. Hair dryer is much worse but vacuum cleaner is no good either.

You certainly did not offend me, that's okay, I was just wondering whether it was just a statement with no real knowledge behind it or if it was for real, because I have never heard of such a thing. I may or may not be stupid
BTW, I have also cleaned my computer with both a vacuum cleaner and a hairdryer (with cold air of course) and didn't have any problems.
did u get ur phone get rid of the water with the rice and how long it takes i have same issue here.

This happened to me and it disappeared in about 8 hours I was freaking out till it worked well then my touch screen started to not detect my fingers so I hit up tmobile telling them my touch screen screwed up and they sent me another one for 5
Bucks.

If it is screwed the descent original screens are not cheap, the cheap ones on ebay are terrible...
HTC wont replace due to non manufacturing damage...
hopefully your phone has a catastrophic mboard failure and they replace it for another reason
looks like i may have gotten some water under my screen as well. i'm seeing "let it evaporate" as the only solution and "pray it doesnt stain your LCD".. what if it does stain my LCD? is there any repair solution? anyone have a link to a good training video?

HELP!!! Drowned my Sensation in seawater!!!

I accidentally dropped my brand new sensation in seawater for a couple of seconds. I took it out, turned off, took out the battery, SIM card and memory card, lightly rinsed the phone with fresh water (didn't dip it into, just washed off the salty water off the phone) and now I'm waiting for it to dry completely, because I can see still some water trapped underneath the touchscreen.
The service is still three days away until monday, but i was just thinking if somebody knows of what else could I do before I try to send it for repair. I was thinking of trying to turn it on once it completely dries off, or it is not such a good idea?
This wil help you... i think
The dry rice trick
Tried that also. I buried it in rice immediately, it has been so since yesterday when this happened, but still has some water trapped underneath the touchscreen.
I fear the damage from salty water is much worse than normal water.
Sorry to say but you are screwed. There is no way this phone will work reliably ever again..
The rice trick has never worked in my experience, dont turn it on,get some DE-IONISED water, flush it with that it wont leave residue like normal water will, let it dry in the airing cupboard for a few days then turn it on
Can I wash it with distilled water? Would that be helpful?
Is there a step-by-step instruction on how to dissasemble a Sensation and the tools required? I found one on Youtube, but it wasn't very helpful...

I did not know this, it seems the awesome "Dry Kit".
I will buy it one, and if a day i need it, i will try it.
Link : Dry-All for Smartphones
Distilled water is different to de-ionised water,i used de-ionised on a sunk G1 which got into a bootloop from the incident after the washing with de-ionised water it worked and still does
you need to use the de-ionised water to remove the salt water to stop it from corroding heavily.
I dropped a regular cell phone in a glass of lemonade 10 years ago and here's what I did"
- get it out quickly take parts out and sling it around to get liquid out asap
- got home and put a pot of water on the stove
- when water was good and warm, vigorously shook it in the water for 10 seconds
- shook phone as dry as possible
- let dry, heat oven slightly then turn off and put phone in to speed up drying
- once dry, reassemble
- phone worked perfectly afterwards
not saying I would do this with a Sensation....just sayin

[Q] Destilled Water/Alcohol inside the LCD Screen

Hello guys!
I have a bit of a problem. My cell went down to the toilet and I almost instantly turn it off and sunk it on distilled water... waited some days in a zip lock with silica gel., then turned it on and it seems to work (although the battery seems to be damaged).
My problem is: between the LCD screen there is still water, then I sunk the phone in isopropilic alcohol, did the same but the humidity is still there. maybe vanished on a 1%...
I attached a picture of the screen.
Have anyone an idea of what could I try?
Wash again with isopropilic alcohol and use heater to evaporate the alcohol. At the end of the process you will still have some yellow spots and those you can't get rid off because they are between the layers of the screen

[Q] Water damage to Z3. Been drying it, but screen still flickers. Dry it more?

Hi everybody,
Please read the first 2 paras for my story. My question is in the 3rd para. \
So 3 days back i went for a freshwater swim with my friends in a river and I took my phone out to take pictures coz its waterproof. But unfortunately I ran into some issues. First, it started registering touches underwater and that annoyed me. So I merely locked the phone and used the camera button to shoot. I shot a couple of pics underwater and when i was about to shoot the third above water, the screen got unresponsive/
It did not register any touches from my fingers even after i've completely dried it out. I rebooted it (via hard reset buttons) but did not help so i switched it off and kept. I came back and switched it on but it didnt even turn the screen on. So i dipped it in a rice bag.
The good news is, after two days in the rice bag, the fogginess within the camera lens is gone. So i believe its progressing. However, when i turn the phone on, it comes to the lockscreen and starts flickering big time, and the whole display goes black (but backlight stays on). Then i lock the device and unlock it a few times and the screen turns on again, flickering heavily.
I put it back to dry but, i am wondering if anyone knows what kind of hardware damage this is. Is this simply something i can dry off? Or should I take it to a service center (i have no warranty so I will have to pay)?
Are the touches not being recorded because of water interference? Or is something physically damaged?
Thank you very much for reading and attempting to answer.
It is hardware issue, should have tested the water proof ness when you got the z3. There's no way you can fix this. If you're able to somehow argue youf way through to point out that it is defected when you got it then it should be covered by sony... Anyway good luck buddy.

Thank you very much for your response. I will try to do that! The thing is i did test it. The pressure test. And then i submerged it in a bowl of water too.. Nothing happened. But that was about 3 weeks prior to this incident. Anyway thanks again.

did you some how within that 3 weeks bent the phone or caused the CPU to heat up badly to the point it melted the glue?
on mine i just noticed there is a slight bump (back glass) on the power button side, not sure was it there a week ago when i got it, but definitely keeping an eye on it.
hope everything works out for you bud.

Heat up badly.. hmm yes at one point when i was taking photos out in direct sunlight. It heated up and switched off the camera. Oh im sorry to hear that man. Make sure you get a case or something before you dip it in water. I just recalled that the last time i immersed it in water, i had the case on. Maybe that's why I didn't get any water damage.

To those who submerged their phone

So the other day I was listening to music in the shower and the phone got some over spray on it.
Upon getting out the front bottom speaker where the music comes out was real poppy, I saw that the black cloth was wet so i blew it out gently and dried it up and it worked fine after a bit. Also the other and more importantly issue was that my sms/mms stopped working. It kept saying that it had no signal and was not able to send text messsages. I took off my case and then the back cover and noticed that it was a little wet on the inside not much, most of it was around the camera area nothing near the sim card.
My question is for those who intentionally and unintentionally put their phone in the water, what effects did you have from the swim? anything that I have encountered and is this a normal reaction from it getting a little wet, not fully submerged just some waterdrops on it?
The back cover always gets firmly pressed in so that wasnt the issue.
I submerge my phone all the time, really. It doesn't really matter if water gets into the back cover of the phone because if you look under the back cover, you'll notice 2 little rubber pads. Those cover the SIM/SD Card slot(s). As for the speaker being "poppy", that's fine, but I wouldn't blow into it; you may just force water in, so just let it be while it dries. Just make sure that once it's done being wet, you take off the back cover and dry it all off. Better safe than sorry!
Yes, that's the directions I saw once for the G3 after its wet. You pull the back cover and dry off around the sim and sd card slots.

Alright thanks for the info. Have you experienced any issues with signal after getting wet?

Typically, no.
Just out it into rice for 2 days and u r done.
I have done that previously for phones but will not do that for this phone. One of the major factors for my purchase was the water resistance if I have to put it into rice every time this phone gets wet it is a waste of time of time for me.
