[Q] Water under screen - Am I screwed? - HTC Sensation

So here's the situation:
I was applying a screen protector from bestskinsever (huge fan of their stuff). You need to apply a small amount of soapy water to correctly apply the film. I finished applying it evenly and then turned my phone on, only to find (to my horror) that there was what appeared to be moisture under the screen, which made the screen look terrible when the backlight shone through it.
I immediately turned the phone back off, pulled the battery, and stuck the phone into a plastic bag full of rice (a solution I had heard of at some point). My hope is that the water will eventually evaporate and be soaked up by the rice, returning my phone to it's previous state of awesomeness.
What do you think the chances are of that? None of the water sensors on the phone or the battery were tripped by the water, but the screen looks pretty ugly as of last night.
Anyone else have to deal with this? Did I do everything right once discovering the issue?
Thoughts welcome.

I had this happen with my mytouch 4g. I applied a skinomi protector and when I turned on the screen I noticed the moisture under the screen and it made the screen look discolored. It did get a lot better after a few days but it still had a water stain on the LCD.

Don't think your standing a good chance. Are you sure the water is underneath the screen and not between the protector and the screen? If I were you, I'd remove the backcover. That frees the device's sides so the water might run out there. You might also try to suck it out with a strong vacuum cleaner Just be careful not to scratch your Sensation.

I strongly suggest you NOT to use vacuum cleaner because it may cause damage to delicate hardware of the phone. Because Vacuum cleaner creates static electricity.
As for the water are you sure it is under the screen not between protector and screen?
If i were you i would considering removing screen protector. If it is still there it means it is under scteen and since you cannot disassemble lcd screen i would remove back cover and pray for it to be evaporate.
Hope this help

whole reason why I stay away from water solution application based SPs.
they may stick better and all but the risk...
someone needs to come up with a better solution for these "military grade" SPs.
op, sorry to hear about your phone. I hope it fixes it self. if not, hope you have insurance. (I know it would suck shelling out another $130 for the deductible when you just bought the phone but...)

Are you sure? Never heard of that...

yes dude i don't mean to offend you if i did then sorry but once i used to clean my computer from dust with a vacuum cleaner or a hair dryer. Hair dryer is much worse but vacuum cleaner is no good either.

You certainly did not offend me, that's okay, I was just wondering whether it was just a statement with no real knowledge behind it or if it was for real, because I have never heard of such a thing. I may or may not be stupid
BTW, I have also cleaned my computer with both a vacuum cleaner and a hairdryer (with cold air of course) and didn't have any problems.

did u get ur phone get rid of the water with the rice and how long it takes i have same issue here.

This happened to me and it disappeared in about 8 hours I was freaking out till it worked well then my touch screen started to not detect my fingers so I hit up tmobile telling them my touch screen screwed up and they sent me another one for 5
Bucks.

If it is screwed the descent original screens are not cheap, the cheap ones on ebay are terrible...
HTC wont replace due to non manufacturing damage...
hopefully your phone has a catastrophic mboard failure and they replace it for another reason

looks like i may have gotten some water under my screen as well. i'm seeing "let it evaporate" as the only solution and "pray it doesnt stain your LCD".. what if it does stain my LCD? is there any repair solution? anyone have a link to a good training video?

Spilled rubbing alcohol on screen! What do i do now?

Spilled rubbing alcohol on screen! luckily it works, but now there is a slight discoloration on the part that got the spill- its been a week and the discoloration has not gone away
So do I need a new lcd or a new touch digitizer (or both) , or should i just take it apart and try to clean first?
None of the h20 damage indicators are pink (all are white and the phone still works) albeit with a bit of discoloration on the screen, like if its a white screen a bit of it is just a slight hue darker (almost like a shadow of something is projecting on the screen at that spot) .... im pissed at myself and love my slide - and was wondering if i should try to take apart and clean any material between the lcd and the touch digitizer glass or how to approach this issue. has anyone else taken apart their phone as per instructions on the forum or gotten parts from the 'repairsuniverse' website?

I would recommend avoiding disassembling if at all possible. Takes about 20-30 min to tear down, and theres a few things that can go wrong during disassembly/reassembly that can result in the phone not working properly. If you have to buy and install a new screen you have no choice, but hopefully someone knows another fix!
I have heard 50/50 mix of isopropyl and water is a good cleaning solution. I have heard windex or vinegar is bad.
I have used 50/50 isopropyl and water with no problems (just enough to damp a microfiber cloth or small cotton rag).
Did you spill enough for it to get behind the digitizer?
Send it into HTC if you haven't had it for a year. If you with TMOUS, and bought this phone in contract. Tell them your screens acts weird when you slide it open. It Blacks out, and the colors distort. Tell send you a new one in the mail (If under HTC warrenty).

im not sure - got the phone off amazon new -- as was cheaper then buying at tmobile and got it Nov 5, 2011 so less than a year.... but then again its rooted and dont know if they will accept it back.
I know i did take off the screen protector and cleaned but that did not fix anything - whatever is discoloring the screen (moisture/residue) is not there so it must be behind the glass, underneath digitizer or on LCD. not sure... is there a way to tell where the "contamination" may be?
Also its been nearly 2 weeks and in CA its been hot as #$%# here so think anything should have evaporated by now (esp rubbing alcohol) so suspect either some residue left behind or it just dried funny.... ill see if i can attach screenshot - sometime later tonight to this post. it still works but you can tell somethings wrong - that makes anything under the areas look slightly darker than surrounding non damaged area (like there is still alcohol still under there but think that's pretty unlikely)

hmmm...
but how do you clean the back of the glass without taking it apart?
I would send it to HTC anyway. I'm pretty sure they'll take it back as is and fix it. But be warned you'll lose root and s-off. They usually reset the phone to the latest release

Has anyone tried XtremeGuard?

I just did and now I need a new phone. I don't know if it's just me or what but I did the wet install even used less water that in the videos they have on their Site and my screen is completely screwed. I assume a little water got in between the cracks and the plastic. Half of my screen is a greyish color and the other half is almost completely fine the Grey half flashes sometimes. Has anyone had this type of water damage? Will it dry out eventually or am I screwed?
Not sure what went wrong for you. I have a full body on my iHOX, full body on my Vizio Tablet, Front and Back on my iPhone 4, and back on my iPad 3. All of them went on smoothly, the bubbles cleared within about 48 hours and they've lasted forever. The only time they come up is if I attempt fitting a new case that has overlap on the screen and a tight grip. Sorry to hear something went wrong with yours.

I'm not sure what went wrong with it either. Yes it seems it would be a nice screen protector if my phone didn't look like two face right now. I know it's not just water left over from the screen protector because I pulled it up to see of it kept the color (at first I thought it was). I hope it drys out. Seems like it could. Theirs no major discoloration. Hopefully it stops flickering as well.

Try sticking it in a ziplock with some dry white rice overnight to see if that helps pull out the moisture. I would avoid turning it on till then.

let me know if this works. i would like to get a screen protector myself but the bottom part of my screen makes a loose crackly noise. after what you said i'm scared it might get water in through there also. is there any non-water based way to apply the screen protector, like an alcohol solution or something that'll evap clean?

Well after a night sitting in rice I turned it on but the back light fried out of it. I wouldn't recommend wet install anything personally, I'll never get anything that says wet install ever again. Too risky Imo.
works
I have it and installed it with soapy water just like advised, took me a while to install because some particles got under the screen but worked fine.
Be careful to pay attention to edges when putting it on so there wouldn't be any bubbles and it doesn't completely cover the edges.
(Oh and if you press the screen against glass it sticks to it, pretty cool for taking timer pics or videos; careful not to rip the screen out, it sticks really good sometimes

Permanent screen grease caused by KFC / toothpaste - should I try rubbing alcohol?

Since last week I've suddenly been plagued by a filthy layer of grease accross the screen of my phone. It covers about 80% of the screen surface with just a few areas towards the edges where it doesn't reach.
No matter how many times I think I've wiped it off, as soon as I begin touching the phone again, it quickly reappears. It has a somewhat cloudy / misty appearance with a tendency to accentuate normal fingerprint and grease marks ten fold compared to previous. It looks disgusting and is seriously spoiling my enjoyment of the phone.
It began towards the end of our recent holiday. I've got two guesses as to what may have caused it. The first possibility is having immediately touched the screen with dirty hands after eating a KFC chicken meal (very greasy). The other is a somewhat vague recollection of accidentally slobbering a drop of toothpaste onto it late one evening, which if I'm correct may have damaged the materials within the screen?
I've become very frustrated with the way it looks and am beginning to contemplate some drastic measures in attempt to clean it.
I'm considering using isopropyl alcohol. I know a lot of people warn against it but on the whole the evidence I've found suggests many have used it previously without encountering any noticeable problems. Even on modern smartphones with digitisers like ours.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as its driving me crazy seeing my phone like this and a simple dry micro fibre cloth has proved insufficient to clear it permanently.
Id love to help but never faced such a situation usually when i eat some mcdonalds and touch the screen i can notice the grease and all that but after i use a wiping cloth and it does the job

Yeah I'm starting to think that the toothpaste theory is how it actually happened. It's resembling a similar appearance to what my old Nokia 5800 went like after I naively attempted to remove a scratch from it's screen using toothpaste. Very murky and almost powdery looking dirt that refused to go away.
It's as though the grease is 'locked in' to the screen. I can wipe the screen and temporarily everything appears back to normal again. That is until a few minutes into using it once more that it goes back to looking like someone has thrown it into the chip pan!

i've used rubbing alcohol and it's worked fine. You can try peroxide i think ( i haven't tried peroxide...)
usually a microfiber cloth does the trick. Make sure your fingers are clean when you use it again, your hands have a lot of oil on them...
That has got to be one of the best topic titles I've read on this site.
i was imagining a scenario where you accidentally tipped your chicken into toothpaste instead of hot sauce and somehow a piece of toothpaste chicken fell onto your phone
Lol title! Use glasses cleaner and a microfiber cloth!

[Q] Sensation xe display shows bright spots, Problem with LCD or digitizer?

Im not sure if this has been asked but i did some research and seems like every has a problem with either the hardware or a crack.
What happened was, as dumb as i can be, followed an instructions to place a screen protector.... it required a soupy liquid. so after doing as mentioned... i started seeing bright spots around screens.... its not white or anything its just the color of whatever the screen shows but brighter.... at first its was huge... then a few days after it gotten less.... but now there has been only small spots around the edges. what i needed help on was to find out whether the liquid has gone in behind the digitizer or behind the LCD? and if this requires a replacement or just a clean up?
i have attached a picture but it might not be as clear cause i could only take a shot with another phone.
id appreciate the information.
I am pretty sure its that liquid you used to apply the protector.. Somehow it has entered inside the display..
Just wondering why you are applying a screen protector on Sensation which already has Corning Gorilla Glass Protection..

im pretty sure its the liquid as well... but i just dont know if it got behind the digitizer or the display? and im guessing it can be cleaned....
and no its not for the protection... i put it so i dont get smudges of fingerprints on it... so i tried an anti fingerprint screen protector....
Do you still have the screen protector on in picture? Reason I'm asking is because I use the same kind of protector and before it fully dies it looks just like That then dries Crystle clear. Now if that's you're screen without the protector on then yes you have somehow gotten the liquid behind the screen. How far behind I don't know.

No the picture was taken without the screen protector....
that's where I am having trouble figuring out.... cause I don't wanna dessasemble the device and find out its not behind the digitizer.... and not sure if I would need a new one either
You can try taking the back off and putting the phone in a bag of rice. This will absorb the moisture. It does take some time but really works. Awhile back I dropped my device in the wet mud and I removed the back placed in the bag of dry rice and the rice absorbed the extra moisture and my device was good as new. It really works but be patient with it because it takes a bit of time. I think it might be worth a try in your case to see if the rice can absorb this moisture before you go and dismantle the phone. It's worth a shot. It worked for me and I had mud and wet all in my device it was awful. I cleaned the mud off and put in rice without the back and battery of course and sure enough it absorbed the rest of the water. It was even in the screen area. Hopefully the rice will draw out that excess moisture. It can't hurt to give it a try. Then if no joy you will have to dismantle the device.but do give the rice a try. It's not fast acting in fact in my case it took several days but it does work. Hopefully this will work for you. Like I said it's at least worth a try. Best of luck and hopefully this fixes your issue. Keep us posted and in a few days let us know if the rice worked. Best wishes

[Q] Advice on water damage. Pics.

So, my girlfriend had her Moto G in her purse and a water bottle opened and got her phone wet. I completely. disassembled the phone and dried everything out with a hair dryer. There is still a section of the screen that has a weird mark on it and the screen will appear to flicker every so often. I know for a fact the connection is dry so what else could it be? She's using my Nexus 4 for now. Eeeekkk. She's clumsy and that phone is glass all around!!!

spot could be because water maybe got into the lcd itself? Or maybe the digitizer is right up against it

it's probably because you used a hair dryer to dry the phone

In theory it can be fixed, but it's very hard to do and you may end up destroying the lcd. You may have gotten water between the layers of the lcd and it won't dry easy and even if it does it will probably stay as a permanent blob due to the minerals in the water.
The way to fix it is to open the lcd itself and separate the layers until you reach the blob, then wash it gently with 99% alcohol and dry gently with warm air. I've done this several times, but few it didn't end well, depends on the lcd itself.
My advice is to disassemble the phone and leave it in an open-air bag of rice and leave in in a warm place for 3 days or so.
As a last resort you can try what I said above, just make sure to note how the layers were put and which side, so you don't mess it that way.
Good luck.
It's weird. I woke up today and it was completely gone. Either the drop of water that was in there migrated to somewhere else in the phone, or it evaporated. Thanks for the help.
