Is there any point in zram? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On our device? As we have 2gb ram anyway. Been reading about it and think it's a bit pointless?

It certainly helped little on my 1GB S3 but yeah I think it's pretty much pointless on our device. I haven't bothered trying it myself.

On my Xperia Arc S with 512mb RAM it helped quite a bit but on the Nexus 5 its pointless as its hard enough to use up 2gb of RAM.

Available ram on ICS as opposed to GB

Just flashed Sky ICS and I have to admit its amazing. But I have noticed available ram to be substantialy lower then with GB. ICS hovers around 200mb and GB is around 480 to 530 mb available. Anyone else experiancing this?
Ics probably caches more available memory for performance purposes. Nothing to worry about

I have noticed that free ram is down, also. But the rom I am running is so much smoother I don't worry about...

Android 4.0 RAM Requirement

What is the optimal amount of RAM a phone must have to run Ice Cream sandwhich efficently?
I think ics requires at least 1gig. Custom roms may be able to run on less but it's not ideal.

Having used a Droid OG with 256mb of RAM on ICS, I can honestly say it sucks balls. There's virtually no multitasking, everything closes.
But 512mb seems to be good nonetheless. The HTC Aria with 384mb of RAM has a pretty good ICS ROM as well...
As long as its stock ICS, it doesn't require too much RAM at all. 512mb seems to be a good, solid amount however.

Optimus 2X is coming out with ICS soon (finally).
It has 384MB ram available, 128 goes to the GPU.
Will report back after it's out, but it should be fine.

That's 512, I think were talking about total RAM here.

I know, but more attention to finer details never killed anyone
Plus it's worthwhile mentioning how much is restricted to GPU usage, some phones might use less, or more. So saying 512MB as a blanket statement isn't going to cover all phones.

You can say that again. My x8 is barely coping. 168mb of ram on a good day
Ics runs smooth on legeng with 300+ ram. Don't know the exact value.
Mororola mailstome had 512 mb of ram and this enought for ICS and JB.
While there is no official requirement (and there are ports to the G1 with a beefy 96mb of ram) its accepted that 512mb would be required to run it well

i think that the requirement is approxymatly between 300 because my galaxy ace work very nice with 278 ram 4.04

Im not to bothered about cost, but im looking around £400-500 ish mark, and i defo want a quad core, "i play Games alot"
also what about the overheating on tablets?, anyone run into this yet?
thanks, amatris
I dont think overheating will be much of a problem on either of those tablets. The nexus 7 and 10 are well built, I can't say anything about the note, but I would go with the google standard.

Even though the nexus 10 is a dual core it is still a beast. I bet it can outperform most quad core tabs

The Nexus 10 is a dual core but it is a Google standard tablet so it is zippy, the Nexus 7 is a quad core. Both tablets are running hardware from nvidia so they are very good.

I have a galaxy note n7000, so the nexus 7 is kinda out, just for the pure fact that it wil give me 2" on the screen and 2 more cores, thats why i want a quad core, its a shame that asus have not got any 10" quad core tabs :-\ , but ill look at reviews for the nexus 10, but while im doing that , any other tabs out there anyone would recommend ?
Thanks amatris.
you should take a look on the microsoft surface. i have it and it's quite cool. it runs fast and smooth, it has office 2013, so in my personal opinion it is the ideal tablet

Why do you want quad core so bad?....it won't necessarily be better for gaming. GPU is something you should be more interested in. Quad core just eats a ton more battery and isn't going to necessarily give better performance. I say Nexus 10 all the way....plus you get the highest resolution screen on a tablet by a long shot.

Hmm of thanks guys, Iv looked at bench marks with the nexus 7 and 10, and there is really not much difference, I will probably save for a nexus 10, shame it does not have a ad slot, also what gpu's should I be looking out for tablets?, just for info sake
Thanks for all of your help.

Have you looked at the Asus Transformer Infinity? It has a Quad-core NVIDIA Tegra-3 processor @ at 1.7GHZ. There are quite a few ROM's for it too. And an Micro-SD card slot.
Get the pickle tab 10.1 lol

The Transformer Infinity (TF700) Vs the nexus 10?
im not sure what one to get but iv got it down to them, im looking for performance, and GPU,
im thinking about the The Transformer Infinity, for the quad core/Gpu, but then the nexus 10 has a faster clock speed, Any info guys? Or maybe the nexus 7?
thanks. amatris
I own an Asus Slider, but I recommend you Nexus 10.
The Nexus 10 wins hands down. Samsung has proven time and again how slow they are to keep up with Google in the Android Race. I would rather put my money with the company responsible for Android that Sammy who trips over their own broken promises. The specs are close, the price is better and the tablet will destroy anything you put in front of it.
Cheers.
Wait for tegra 4, it has a 72 core gpu

[Q] Galaxy S4 vs Nexus 4

We can get Nexus at almost half the price and on the top it is unlocked and will provide vanilla android experience, what do you say guys..? which one would you prefer..? S4 o N4.?
I would obviously prefer S4 over Nexus 4 any day.
But, I think these comparison threads aren't allowed in device forums. Post in General forum if you want to

The Nexus 4 is not very attractive anymore. Slower, heavier, limited in storage and functionality and has a much shorter battery life. This latter is a major cause for concern, never mind the price. Hopefully Google will improve on that significantly for the N5, if they do, I'd consider that.

I'm waiting on the reviews before jumping on either.
While the Z1 is great I can't help but feel a little disappointed. No OIS, no Xenon, huge bezels. And if the video play back is really a mere 6.6 hours as Sony themselves are claiming, one then has to ask how long will you be able to browse for? Cause that's pretty weak.
Still, I'm gonna wait until I see some objective reviews before deciding on either. And there's always the One Max right around the corner too.
Xperia z1 is really nice im looking more into that phone over the note 3. Note 3 specs sounds good im just dissapointed by the hardware they couldve really been innovative. I like the xpreria hardware ..note 3 specs are great but who really needs 3gb of ram i had the note 2 and it was fine with 2g of ram and the 1.5 processor

i vote for z1, is more smart, screen seems best, and build quality is best too. galaxy have s-pen and 3gb of ram.
Definitely the Note 3! The best is getting even better!

The same thing was said about the 2gb of ram, and also when 1gb devices came out etc...
Plus the ram on the note 3 is fully used as shown in some hands on , leaving just 200mb of free space when multiwindow and pop up apps were used.

Galaxy Note 3 features a 5.7-inch Full HD Super Amoled display, quad-core 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 mobile processor with Adreno 330 graphics chip and support for 4G LTE networks for faster data connectivity. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 packs 3 GB RAM and will be offered in 32 GB or 64 GB storage options. It will also feature a memory card slot to support up to 64 GB micro SD card with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update to run smoothly over the powerful hardware.
