[Q] Galaxy S4 vs Nexus 4 - Galaxy S 4 General

We can get Nexus at almost half the price and on the top it is unlocked and will provide vanilla android experience, what do you say guys..? which one would you prefer..? S4 o N4.?

I would obviously prefer S4 over Nexus 4 any day.
But, I think these comparison threads aren't allowed in device forums. Post in General forum if you want to

The Nexus 4 is not very attractive anymore. Slower, heavier, limited in storage and functionality and has a much shorter battery life. This latter is a major cause for concern, never mind the price. Hopefully Google will improve on that significantly for the N5, if they do, I'd consider that.

[Resolved] Which phone should I get? Note, Nexus, One X?

[Thread Resolved]
In the end, I went with the Nexus as it has much better software, development and update speed...
Sorry about making another thread on this.
But, I'm looking for a 24 month contract under £15 a month with little upfront fee, up to £100. I was on Pay as You Go before. I just wanted to know what is the best at that price? At the moment, I'm looking at the HTC One X, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note. Which one would you recommend? Or should I get something else? The phone needs to last for 2 years. Thanks for the help.
Python.

Any suggestions? At the moment I'm between the Nexus and Note. Which has better development?
Go with Galaxy Nexus. Fast as hell with new Jelly Bean and also it's a really developer/hacker friendly phone

I don't think note will get jelly bean or next version of android. Also I find Nexus to have more developer support. Also Gnex has pure Android which looks beautiful

The real question is getting the latest update important to you. If it is go with a nexus, if not go with the phone that suites your needs now. Just don't expect your phone to be updated to the latest software when going with a skinned phone.

If development and long term support is your biggest option.
100% no doubt, go with the Nexus.
The Note is a close second because it has decent development but updates are a bit slower.
I'd leave the Sensation in the dust.

I would have to say "not the Sensation XL". I had a Sensation and it's a heavy pocket mirror. And there aren't too many roms available for them. In the end I'll have to recommend buying a phone because you like the design, not because of the specs. You're not going to enjoy a phone that has a slightly faster CPU if you don't like how it looks.
I've pretty much eliminated the Sensation.
But which CPU and GPU is better? The one in the Note or the Nexus? I would prefer better development but it's not a big issue. I wouldn't be installing ROMs until the phone gets old. Hardware-wise which is the better phone? And will both last the next two years? I know the Nexus will, but will the Note? Thanks for all the help.

Specs are better in note for sure. But even though note has better spec, I find Nexus to be smoother with the jelly bean update.

I also second the suggestion to get a Nexus. It gives you the best Android Experience (fast updates from Google, huge developer community) .
The HTC HD2 is still very expensive because it is very popular among developers I guess this might be the case with the Nexus too. So if you want to sell it in the future it won't be completely worthless by that time. Just my thoughts.
If you want an Android phone go directly with Galaxy Nexus, but if you have much money you can buy an iPhone 4s
I think galaxy nexus or galaxy S3
I was going for the Nexus but then I saw this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510755. What do you guys think about this?

Can't find a SG3 in the budget I have. Otherwise, it looks like a good phone.

Droid DNA Vs. VZWS3

I personally was debating the DNA over the VZWS3 but the on board ram won me out. 4 cores won't have that much of a impact but that on board memory sure does especially for future updates. Also I don't like Motorola's software upgrade approach. Though I did just read they are going to have a new Software beta pilot open to all users to test next version Android builds before release.
Why bring up Moto software updates as neither phone is made by them?

Personally, I would say the biggest concerns about the DNA are the battery and Sense... not to mention HTC & VZW's history of updates & getting in the way of modding. The hardware itself looks pretty amazing though.
No SD Card and unable to do simultaneous voice/data on 3G.
Other than that, I really like what I've seen. I prefer HTC over Samsung, but damn..... I'd feel like I'm going backwards having to do without features I've grown used to with the GS3. I'd also be cautious of the battery life.... I've had heavy useage days where my GS3 barely lasted me 8 hours so I can only imagine the DNA wouldn't.
I think he's one of those people who think "Droid" is specifically made by Motorola and not just a name for a phone lol

Kewl story.
I will never understand why HTC decided to put a 2020 mah battery on a 5 inch screen. Especially with that much ppi. C'mon, the S3's screen is smaller and does not sport a quad core and it has a larger stock battery. Wtf?

Used to love HTC. Now wouldn't take one if you have it to me. Talk about a company continuing to take steps backward.
They actually claimed people wanted thinner devices over better battery life. Okay HTC, how is that working out for your profits. Next they will claim the people wanted locked bootloaders.

I'm starting to feel that way about Samsung actually. I LOVE my S3 in almost every possible specification/feature way but HATE the reception problems with this phone. I was hoping that after the Samsung Nexus I'd never have to deal with that again. The Motorola phones work much better for reception but I don't really care much for them.
I'm really looking forward to getting reviews on the battery life and radio on the DNA from people who had the S3. I'm worried the battery life won't be great but I would find it hard to believe the radio isn't significantly better than the S3's radio.

Too lazy to look it up right now but I believe the DNA has a 2200 mha battery. The s3 has a 2100. 2200 on the DNA is still small though they should of put a 3000 at the least

That was my bad. I was working on 3 different threads in different forums and copy and paste failed.. HTC sense roms always were to bloated for me. I like AOSP feel and customization better.
HTC has always done pretty aggressive app management so they probably thought they could get away with a smaller battery and save a couple rubles?

May sound strange but I think the quad core is supposed to be more energy efficient. Of course until some lucky devil gets to actually compare the S3 to the DNA for us, we won't know for sure. I do agree, even if it has a nice battery life, it would have been nice if it came with a 2500mah battery as originally rumored.
they probably went 2020 to keep the phone thin ,otherwise it would face criticism for being fat
The no SD Card and removable battery are a huge killer for me. After my last phones all having these options why would I go to one that does not have those? Unless its got a 3300 battery and 64 gigs storage.
I expect the DNA dev community to be more pathetic than the Droid Incredible 4G's.

Are you tied to a contract at all with your N4? The specs appear to be better on the newer phones, but you must hold strong and stay away from hype and read some good Vs. reviews. Personally I'd hold on another year to the N4 (quality, solid, well supported device) and see what next year has to offer.

I understand on personal choice but coming from iPhone I don't know to much on the background of each device... On a general opinion which device has better performance base on previous devices... That's all I'm asking... I though I have the best android but honestly my wife's GS3 looks faster and better battery than mine... But I don't like the look and color options... The new HTC looks nice but I have friends that said the previous device are bad...

I understand but what might be a better performer for me may be different for someone else and previous devices don't matter, now is what matters. All the reviews online will help you more, trust me. And the nexus 4, HTC One and galaxy s 4 are all fast phones so it won't even matter. What matters is if you like stock android, if you like sense or touchwiz, if you're ok with a plastic phone or if you need a premium looking phone, if you need the best performer in the camera... there are so many factors here and again we all have different opinions, even some of us are having a hard time choosing but if speed is what you're looking for than the nexus 4 is very fast I can tell you that now.

Is it too late in the game to get a GE of the S4?

Hey all. I'm a current Nexus 4 user but I would really like a phone with better battery life that is also removable and has external storage but I don't want to give up stock android. So the GE of the S4 seems favorable but I'm wondering if it still makes sense to get the GE of the S4 seeing as there are a lot of Snapdragon 800 phones now on the market?
IMHO it is not worth taking a non SD800 phone right now... Mostly because Adreno 330 over Adreno 320 than CPU itself.
Yep, too late

If you want a near perfect stock Android experience then yeah get the S4 GE. Much smoother and faster than CM (tried 'em both). Getting around 30 hours of battery-life and the performance is absolutely great. Went from a Nexus 4 to my S4, and the latter is better in almost every aspect. :good:
It depends on whether you live your life by benchmark scores like so many people on here seem to. Would there be a real-world difference between a Snapdragon 600 or Snapdragon 800 phone now or in the near future? I have my doubts. Yes, we know the SD800 is faster, but what use is paying extra for that additional speed if nothing you do with your phone needs to or can utilise it? For example, I know my I9505 is considerably faster than my brother's I9300. Yet I know from first hand experience that his S3 doesn't run visibly slower than my S4 when running any of the applications or games I have compared.
So the upshot for me is that other factors then become more important. For example the camera. Or the screen size and quality.
Not at all. I just received mine yesterday and love it! I had an AT&T GS4, but couldn't get it to perform right even after rom's, kernels, etc. TOUCHWIZ = bad
I'm very happy with the performance of this phone and will hold onto it until the GS5 (hopefully) is released as a GPE.
I agree that I don't see it being too late to get a S4 GPE. My Galaxy Nexus failed a couple months ago and I really wanted my next phone to have a removable battery and a microSD card slot, but I have no desire to use anything but stock Android. The S4 GPE was just what I was looking for. With a bit of research, I've been able to root the device, unlock the bootloader, install CWM recovery, and make full Nandroid backups--just like on a Nexus phone.
I really hope Google maintains the GPE line of phones in the future. Not having to depend on Nexus hardware or flashing custom ROMs as the only way to get an unaltered Android interface is really nice.

Man....i did the same mistake as you wanna make!I used a Nexus 4 before buying a Galaxy S4.I`m very dissapointed by this phone. In theory should be better than Nexus 4 but the TouchWiz interface is full of lag glitches and other things that you don`t see at Nexus 4.Battery is definitely worse than Nexus`s 4.In benchmark tests it S4 scores better than Nexus 4 but in the normal daily usage you don`t feel this difference.I have i9505 model and i must tell you that no pure stock android 4.3 porting is perfect like the one that you have on Nexus 4.So...the main advantages of Galaxy S4 are the camera wich is gorgeous comparing to Nexus 4 camera. Also the display is way better than the one from Nexus 4.But on Nexus 4 you can use "faux123" kernel and his app from playstore to adjust the correct colours for the display and you will get a very nice vivid display. Also the combination between "faux123" kernel and "Purity Rom" will give you a decent battery life.I had a "faster" cpu binning Nexus 4,wich supports a 150 mv undervoltage. That didn`t impove too much battery life but the overheating problem was gone at all.So...for short...Nexus 4 + faux123 kernel(and his app) + Purity Rom + 150 mv undervoltage makes the Nexus 4 almost as good as Galaxy S4 but at a lot more deccent price.Hope this will help you to make the correct decision.Have a nice day mate!

It's a downgrade in my opinion. Touchwiz is really, really bad.
It depends what you want to do with the phone.. Are you trying to run custom Roms. Root has been achieved, but not sure if Knox will be cracked to get to the bootloader.. I would wait and see how it goes. The new HTC one may be a better route. I know you can use bootstrap to run customs Roms. I just don't think they run as good as when you have an unlocked bootloader.

I played with an S5 in Best Buy yesterday. Definitely a downgrade. It's still stuttery like other galaxy phones, the new touch wiz leaves a lot to be desired. The only thing in my opinion that the s5 does better than the nexus is the camera. The only thing I personally would upgrade to would be the new HTC one at this point. I played with one of those too, very nice.

do you really want to change your $350 phone for a $600+ phone with nearly the same specs, some more gimmicks and a fugly UI? what will you use the extra 200MHz for? you wont feel the difference between the N5 and S5. well, maybe the N5 will feel smoother, since the new samsung crap UI appears to be choppy at some points. Quite honestly, after all the issues I had with samsung, I'd never consider going back to their devices. nuh uh.

Samsung can cripple any device`s speed with TW, i like Sense 100 times better tbh.
i have both a n5 and a s4. sure, by specs, the s4 holds its own, and appears to be better than the n5. but in reality, even with the s4 optimized and all the crap disabled, the s4 tends to lag and stutter. it feels like a phone from a few years ago, by the amount it tends to stutter. it doesnt feel like a phone with the specs it has. the n5 truly blows it away with real time use.

How a snapdragon 600 can be better than snapdragon 800 ???
First, do what you want....we can't decide for you. ?
Second , it seems its getting harder and harder to play with new phones....some may never see root, or there will be complicated hack ways to root. Yes, many have dev type editions....but development for them is slow and limited. (Like moto x say)
So, if you like flashing and playing, the only sure bet now days is a nexus. If you can live with a quiet or non existant development community..... Then there's lots of great phones on the way or out. ?
