[Q] Custom ROMs and their similarity - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else feel that most custom ROMs today look and feel 95% similar? I mean the only changes seems to be which module they are using for the tweaks and the boot animations though some are much more stable than the others.
I am Carbon and love the minimalist approach that it has taken and it is super smooth and stable.
From a ROM perspective, I find that there are two which are doing things differently -
1. PA ROM, they have gone away from the customization menu and allowed this to happen dynamically
2. MIUI - Completely different look and feel.
Are there others which are vastly different from the rest? Look forward to your suggestions. Thanks.

Different... maybe the ones based on sense, touchwiz... but yeah, a lot of roms have the same things but with different form.

He said original, not unique. Other ROMs might have taken some features but it was original to that ROM. Hardly any features would be "unique" as its likely another will take the commits and implement it into their own ROM.

Got it and you are absolutely right, most of these are in Carbon which I am on. I was wondering if there were any unique Custom ROMs. I listed 2 on my OP, looking for any more.

That's more like an entire new OS compared to an Android custom ROM.

Their devs (or someone helping them develop the OS) are porting it to the Nexus 5. There's an experimental source which you can build, its not daily driver capable yet. I've built it and successfully booted into it on my Nexus 5 before.

Ever wonder why...

...Cyanogenmod doesn't customize the look and feel of it's ROMs more giving them a fluidity and uniformity found in MIUI?
I think it'd look awesome with some more UI touches.
Agree or no?
As far as tweaks its has the most customization, as far as looks, they want to keep it as stock as possible, they give you theme chooser.
Besides you know how hard it would be to please every one that uses cm7?? Just imagine why this color? Why this battery? Why this app? Why, why, why.....

I think the whole point of CM is to be AOSP with many system and performance tweaks. I don't think it's meant to be visually appealing like MIUI.

MIUI does not use cm as a base. the porters use cm's vendor setup, device setup and various other drivers and libs kernels etc. to make it work on devices but miui developers do not use cm to build miui.

reccomend a rom?

I was going to try the ICS port but dont want to ruin the true one when its out, plus i read GPS is so so and I need that for my running apps.
Ive tried a few but always lean back to stock, but am getting ancy. Can anyone reccomend a nice clean ROM that works well with all the apps and is good on battery.
I might go back to SuperOSR but wanted something different. Tried CY7, Zulu, and like one or two more.
thanks

Very true, Sad that it's not stable on a developer phone.
For me the best custom ROM is Oxygen, No problems at all.
Cm7 runs very stable for me, even on my old heroc that was barely half the phone this one is, with the same apps/launcher setup.

personally i'd say miui over cm7. i was so frustrated with cm7 i wanted to sell my phone. it's a bit better now but it's so hard to switch back to cm7 after getting used to the dialer, sms app and themability of miui. and the stability. all i ever got from cm7 was reboot loops and phone hangs that made me miss my alarms.

CM7 = Stability issue for some...
Carbon/Oxygen = Stable/recommended...
MIUI = Stable, alternate experience "no pure google".
I juste got my Nexus S, I quickly rooted and and installed CM7. I was use to it: had a Nexus One.
But, I experience some instability/crash. If my latest nightly doesn't fix it I'll try Cabon/Oxygen.

What exactly is different between oxygen and carbon?
I really like oxygen for all that it is how ever I am nit picky and don't like that it has a different boot animation than stock and I can't seem to change it on that rom like I have been able to on others. That being said I am running NSCollab and like it a lot though I do wish it was more clean like oxygen but like that it retains stock boot animation yet has all the features on it that I like. But if anyone knows how to give oxygen a stock boot animation I would jump ship quick.

The only differences iirc is that it is themed and has some speed optimizations. The latest Oxygen includes all these tweaks so the only difference now is the themeing.
in response to the original question, if you want every possible feature and option go for CM. if you want a stock experience Oxygen or GPA19. And even though Ive never used it i would suggest muiu just because its so different to everything else out there

[Bounty] Absolutely barebones, stock, pure Google ROM needed. No mods...

I'm hunting for a 100% pure Google, stock, barebones ROM for my S3. Not aokp, not aosp with this mod or that mod. Just a stock, pure replica of what is on my Galaxy Nexus. That's it. I can't compile it myself cause I don't have the machines otherwise I would. So, I'll pay someone to take those Nexus factory images and make them/it flashable on my GS3(for lack of better terminology).
That's not going to happen. Aosp is as close as your going to get.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
So is this a bounty or you just putting up money for someone to do it for you. You might want to list what you are willing to pay.
Why not just run CM10? Even if someone builds a rom without the mods it will still have the same issues as all the other AOSP roms.
What is the benefit of this ROM?
Tweaks, bells, and whistles is much better.
I just prefer a stock experience. It is THE one thing I miss about the galaxy nexus. I don't know what kind of work, time or effort goes into compiling a rom but I'd pay what the dev assumes is a fair price.

Sounds like you are one of those Vanilla Android snobs, that doesn't know what Vanilla Android is.
Have you even tried flashing CM10 or AOKP to see if you like them?
Don't know why you are against any Mods but most AOSP based roms allow you to disable mods pretty easily in the settings. If you really want someone to compile a totally "vanilla" rom, you should state how much your are willing to pay.
Otherwise just flash CM10 or AOKP and disable anything you don't like

Yea haha, I dont think the OP realizes that AOSP more or less CM. After all Cm is based on AOSP
AOSP is much more stable and sometimes tends to get better battery life. Sometimes people don't need crazy optimizations and features cluttering the ROM up.

This is true if you have a Nexus phone since AOSP is created to work on the NEXUS reference design.
However, for any other phone unless you have the manufacturers documentation(which Samsung has decided not to provide ), most of the time to get everything to work you have to use a workaround or even port some of the stock UI code to AOSP to get the phone to work.
As you probably already know there still isn't a "Vanilla Android" rom you can flash to the GS3 that has everything working with or without customization. In fact most phones don't have a pure "Vanilla Android" rom that works without any customization.
In terms of speed and stability, I'd argue that CM7.2 was as stable or more stable than most of the skinned manufacturer 2.3 roms. Eventually we'll get there with JellyBean
IMO "Vanilla Android" ignores Android's greatest strength, but if you really want "Vanilla Android" with no additions get a Nexus phone
The OP wants someone to compile AOSP from source for his GS3, he doesn't seem to understand that it would not function on his phone, because AOSP is designed to function on Nexus.

I know that... but you can compile pure aosp using the device and vendor files that your CM10 maintainers have created to compile AOSP which should function the same as it does on a nexus device except for device specific stuff.

Wondering if anyone could take the time to build a very basic rom that has app ops and supersu built in. just odexed to use with art as its not really worth having xposed since all i look for is app ops, supersu and maybe just quicksettings 3.0 from PA. Guess the OP wasn't expecting this.
But really, if you don't have the knowledge, learn. Making a ROM that does what you want is a matter of taking the PA ROM and removing and adding some files. There's no need to have a special machine or anything.

Adding Features?

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping this isn't a total noon question, but here it goes...
So I really like AOKP, but it isn't available for the One yet. I'd love to be able to remap the keys and have customized navring, like AOKP offers, but I'm afraid I'll have to wait till AOKP comes to OnePlus before I get this chance.
Can anyone let me know if its possible that I can somehow port certain features from ROMs myself?
Thanks!
