FAQ
Q Does this root trigger Knox?
A Nope, Knox stays 0x0.
Q Does this reset Knox if I already have 0x1?
A Nope. It is still not possible.
Q: Do you have a step-by-step guide how to get this work?
A: Read the OP in the original thread and read the video guide here
Q: Install SuperSU, fails to update binary.
A: check you have root using root checker app.
SuperSU on google play store is out dated and will not work.
See suggestion here by jcagara08
Q: I am getting random reboot after root.
A: Make sure you have remove all knox apps completely. See this by Joku1981

Not working for me on either I9505XXUFNB8 or I9505XXUFNB9 for some reason. It just reboots, I get no messages about installing anything.

I got root , but like the first poster when i installed SuperSU, says binary needs to be updated, I dont have any recovery installed, the phone then rebooted by itself , I uninstalled SuperSU , but i still have root access according to the app , but , when i download a program such as Titanium Backup , it gave me errors.
Phone works well , now im sad, and I wish I didnt root it
what about i9500 running 4.4.2 ?
Samsung S4 i9505, firmware i9505XXUGNE5.
Successfully rooted. Downloaded SuperUser APK 3.3 and installed. All apps that needed SU/root works.
Knox still 0x0
Note: Reading the original thread, i9505 may need to have the E5 firmware to work.
Playstore version doesn't update binaries, go to chainfire website
Knox shows 0x0 but I can't get rid of the unlocked icon when phone boots.

Right on the money man! I flashed i9505XXUGNE5 from I9505XXUFNB8 and towelroot installed no problem! Thanks!

Hi,
Does anyone know if I can downgrade i9505 from NE5 to NC4 without tripping knox?
I have a Black Edition and only installed NE5 to test this rooting method (it worked), but i would like to know if I want to go back to black edition version knox will not be triggered.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I would like to be 100% sure of what you are saying. I have a i9505 with XXUFNC4 firmware, the towelroot exploit doesn't work.
But if I upgrade to XXUGNE5 german firmware with Kies (or Odin), apply the towelroot exploit, and then downgrade to my actual XXUFNC4 fwm, you can confirm that normally my phone will stay rooted and still working perfectly ?
Thank you.
You'll lose root when you downgrade.

Does anyone know if its possible to downgrade from I9505XXUFNB9 to I9505XXUENA4 without tripping knox?
still no cigar with I9505XXUFNB8
anyone can provide a tip?
Is it possible to return completely to factory again after usijng this method? For warranty for example?
By flashing sotck with Odin?
Thank you!

After a lot of testing remotely I haven't been able to crack the Exynos based Note 3. I currently use KNOX files within the system.img to call to a file on the sdcard as root to install SuperSU and supporting files. The Exynos doesn't seem to have KNOX, at least not yet. It does have a counter like the older Galaxy series had, except there is currently no way to reset the counter.
I am pretty confident that if I had the device I could get it rooted without increasing the counter. Borrowed, donated, gifted.. doesn't really matter.
I am trying to gauge the interest in doing this, are there even that many people on XDA with the Exynos based models?
I don't have a complete list of models that are Exynos based, but you can get a pretty good idea from this;

Post your model info if you have an Exynos based Note 3! Lets get a list started.

The download mode doesn't show knox or binary counters even after rooting the device. I could only see my binary counter at 1, when I've looked into the triangle app.
Although it does not have KNOX status in download mode, after rooting using CF-Auto-Root make KNOX cannot be installed/run in the app. If i am not mistaken it said knox cannot register or something like that...
Beside the counter of course.

As stated in CF-Auto-Root Thread:
" You will need to flash a stock kernel and stock recovery to reset the binary status"
If someone who rooted with CF-Auto-Root were to flash stock kernel and stock recovery and then try to install knox I think that might give us an idea if the root procedure is reversible? What do you guys think?
Edit:
So I now understand that the Custom Binary Count does not revert to zero. Is that all we are missing to get the root full reversible?
Yes, only that part is missing..

I get your point mate so i also think maybe that can be true
but i still have jus to questions on my head which makes me to think about this:
1- some people have rooted their exynos devices. and after that when they flashed back the stock rom and make a factory reset, they still weren't able to launch anything about the Knox app. so if there is not any flag on efuse or somewhere else, how is that possible that the Knox app recognizes the previous root and just refuses to be launched?
2- ok for example now we say that there is really not any flag about knox on our devices. if Samsung updates the bootloader and puts a knox flag, what would happen? i mean if we just flash the new stock fw without root, will still knox recognize the previous root and put knox flag to 0x1 immediately when the new bootloader will be installed?
sorry for my complicated message, but i hope i could explain my questions
EDIT: @designgears on the poll did you voted as Hell No, just curious

I can't speak for the others, but having a root method for Exynos models that didn't carry the risk of voiding the warranty of a $750 dollar phone would be extremely appealing to me.
Chainfire can't reset flash count on i9500 & SM-N900 because of exynos 5.
so. We can't enjoy Root .
Unless someone can provide one way to Root without increase flash count.

- Everything will be fixable with Triangle Away as your still running the old Bootloader
- This is the only reversable way until the new Bootloader is cracked to be able to reset the Knox Count
- This is a Complete Rom Flash it with Odin
- The Binary Flash Counter Will increase when flashing these ROM Packages.
- This is is meant for people running on the 4.1.2 Bootloader only
The aim of this mod is to update all packages and lighten the bloat in the rom without affecting any anything
e.g. yahoo widgets wouldnt get removed as you can enable it from the settings menu for the lock screen etc..
Flipboard, Google Play Books, Google Play Movies cant be removed as they are applied on first boot after a firmware update by the csc install process
I advise you use something like filemanager and delete the following three files in /system

there's no real need for it though as winrar wont decompress it if it fails the crc32 check

Since you are already on the 4.3 bootloader (the one with KNOX), you can't flash this rom. In the OP is mentioned that this rom is only for users on the 4.1.2 bootloader.
So far, there is no possible way to downgrade the bootloader from 4.3 to 4.1.2 because of the sh*tty KNOX
It will set your bootloader to knox warranty void 0x1

I know about that trick, I thought missing camera firmware issue was solved with Boeffla kernel port.
However, I think tz.img (I'm pretty familiar with trustzone tech) can be safely flashed. Check this note 2 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502464 They're using new tz.img with old bootloader to keep wi-fi working.
And if it's flashed with package, I think wi-fi will work on stock kernel. Can't try now since it's almost 2AM here, but I will tomorrow.

Through some flashing process, I noticed that the SM-N900W8, despite multiple flashing, remains under 0x0 status in KNOX
So it is confirmed that the said model is both mod-friendly and knox-friendly.
There are some limitations though which CAN BE FLASHED.
Refer to post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627996 [SM-N900W8 List of KNOX friendly flashing]
THIS IS ONLY FOR SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 3 SM-N900W8 MODEL. TRY THIS ON OTHER VARIANTS? DON'T BLAME ME FOR UNDESIRED KNOX COUNTERS!
Note: In rooting your Samsung GALAXY Note 3, make sure that REACTIVATION LOCK is UNCHECKED under the security options or else the flashing will interrupt. I also recommend having the original fimware as a backup if anything goes wrong. If you did not follow this direction, it will not be my fault if you run into a bootloop or malfunction.
Confirmed: NO NEED FOR THE TELCEL FIRMWARE TO BE FLASHED. Go with the firmware in your device.
I am using my RWC firmware and KNOX wasn't tripped during the process.
What to do?
Get the following files from the links provided below.
FLASH FIRST the ChainFire Auto-Root I have provided. The SM-N900W8's root file will not work in Kitkat, so use the one I provided. After flashing, check your DOWNLOAD MODE and confirm if it is still 0x0 or 0x1. If all is still in success, flash now the TWRP.
Device will be considered FULLY ROOTED but limited by some functions due to the KNOX Secure Kernel.

Good job, but quite late. There have been two posts by Oogar and polish_pat already on the forums confirming KNOX 0x0 and have been teaching hundreds.
This is the latest up to date version of the guide. Inside I explain a possibility to why this happens.

I successfull downgraded i9505 from 4.4.2 FNC4 to 4.3 MKF and rooted it.
Knox still 0X0
1) Flash i9505_Downgrade_43_by_Leeno_.tar
2) Flash i9505_downgrade43_step2.tar
3) wipe data (if you don't wipe data s4 will hang at startup logo)
optional - root with .bat saferoot
After those steps, i9505 will have full working mkf version missing mkf bootloader.
Bootloader will not downgrade
if you want update to 4.4.2 or newer 4.3 than mkf and keep root and knox 0X0:
1) install mobile odin and open it
2) select option:
- "ever root" and
- "reboot in download mode"
3) select firmware and write. At the end it go in download mode, don't power on it
4) Flash only boot with odin from pc

Why would anyone want to downgrade if you can simply root without all the hassle using geohot's towelroot (http://towelroot.com) up till NF1, and still keep KNOX 0x0?
1) 4.3 is not battery drainer
2) safe root work from readable .bat adb. Towelroot i not know what modify in the system so we not know if any bug is caused by it.
3) if towelroot will not work with next firmware, maybe downgrade will still work

Well, my battery life was better with 4.4.2; so I guess no use for me. Towelroot uses a kernel exploit so basically no other modification is done to the "system", which may pose problems, as you later stated, in case further updates are pushed by Samsung. For more info/discussion see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157

I have 2 phones, bought each with NB8. Neither one had battery drain, I tripped Knox and rooted my first one with Chainfire's method, using custom recovery and running SlimKat 4.4.4 and KT kernel.
My other phone has been updated with Odin to NF1, left stock but running TowelRoot and still Knox 0x0. No suspicious battery drain. With normal usage I get better battery life on my first phone though.
Nf1 still not tested, i will try

I suggest you do a full wipe from the recovery before flashing NF1, it might be a dirty flash - even with Odin - that causes the battery drain.
let me see if I understand...
I have 4.4.2 with 4.4.2 bootloader and KNOX 0X1...
if I use this I'll have 0x0 KNOX and 4.3 ROM and 4.3 bootloader only flashing this file?

No, it says you can go from 4.4.2 to 4.3 without triggering the knox
Waiting to give this a try. 4.4 is not out yet in my country and want to return it to 4.3 as I am having issues with my network.
Enjoy.
Thx but useless it rooted...
Is it different than the Knox folder that you can download from Play Store??
Big thanks.
It works on s7e latest nougat but it feels a bit laggy.

I got a warning message also when i installed the APK file. Not exactly the same. Have you tried checking updates? It will prevent you from dowloading OTA updates. I got rid of it completely by resetting to factory.

I installed the offical nougat rom (UK BTU) on my unlocked, never rooted Galaxy S7 SM-930F using Odin as per instructions on Sammobile site. Generally the firmware works fine and I was very pleased to have it before the OTA roll out in the UK.
UNFORTUNATELY I have been unable to set up either the 'My Knox' app (Play store) or the APK of the 'Secure Folder' app (Sammobile site). In both cases I get a pop up stating "......cannot be set up because unauthorised software was installed on the device".
I used the "Knox Status" app (Play store) to see if the Knox Counter had been triggered. No problem there (Status 0x0, "warranty is valid"). Also note that I still get OTA security updates on schedule so no problems with the firmware being rejected there either. Can anyone help or advise me? The only thing I can think to do is to use Sammobile to downgrade to Marshmallow and wait for the Nougat OTA update?
See this thread on Sammobile.com website in their Galaxy S7 forum: "Galaxy S7 SM-930F - Official nougat rom(UK BTU) Can't install Secure Folder app" - possible explanation and solution given in replies.

Secure folder is one of the most important feature in note 7. I really liked in my old note 7. is there any way to get it to work on rooted device, Like if I kept knox or something.
If not, will it work if I returned to the official Rom ?

I wonder whether Secure Folder root - protection can be bypassed by "hiding root" Xposed plugin. Tell me when you will test it
