Build.prop - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, guys/gals,
I was stupid last night and changed my build.prop file to build.prop.bak, before I replaced the .bak file with my updated one my phone rebooted. Obviously now when I boot the phone it goes to a black screen and I can't do anything with it. I can get into stock recovery and tried a factory reset, but that didn't do anything except erase my data. I tried doing fastboot but every time I try to re-write my system partition it fails. I can do every other partition just not system. I tried reflashing the OTA kitkat with adb but again it can't fins the build.prop file.
So my question is am I screwed or is there a fix that I'm missing?
Thank for any help
BTW... this is for my RAZR HD maxx, not on the razr I am sending this from.

Since you already wiped data, you might as well just do a full FXD install with Kit Kat, if you weren't on it. You might be flashing the incorrect image and that could be causing the issue with system.
If you weren't on Kit Kat, you might as well just go full Kit Kat since you can root it and unlock the bootloader (if you aren't unlocked).
Other possible reasons why it's failing are as follows:
Bad USB cable - If you have the original cable, try it. Otherwise, swap out cables and try again.
Drivers are out-of-date. Update your drivers.
Are you using a USB 2.0 port? Don't be hooked up to USB 3.0.
Windows 8 has been known to cause issues, so if that's what you are on, you might want to try Windows 7 or earlier. If on Mac, I can't help you there as I'm not familiar with Mac.

I concur. Use my RSD Script Generator to generate scripts for the 183 KK FXZ, flash with KEEP DATA, root with towel root, unlock with motoapocalypse. Then you can downgrade back to JB (if desired) by generating scripts for 9.30.1 FXZ, and flashing the UNIVERSAL script. Done with unlocked.

I was on kitkat rooted. I did try the FULL.XML file from samurai, however red doesn't recognize my phone. I used fastboot through command prompt to flash everything except system partition. It won't let me flash, format it.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I am using windows 7 on usb 2 with 2 different factory razr hd cables, with samurai's info from another forum.

System is a LARGE partition so it sounds like a cable/port/driver issue if it's failing to send it properly. I assume you're using motofastboot.exe?

No. I am not. That's probably dummy move #2 I was using fastboot from the sdk... when I get home I'll try motofastboot.
Thanks

Oh yea you have to use motofastboot else system will indeed fail. That should fix you up. Sweet.

Success!!
Thanks SamuriHl, I have been a follower of yours since the Bionic, and House of Bionic. I am not a noob by any means however, every so often I need a little reminding. Thanks for putting me in the right direction. The Phone is fully functional again.
Josh

You're very welcome. If it's not unlocked, do so now.

[Q] Droid 2 Global Stuck In Bootloader

Earlier today my phone was acting up, not sending messages. So i did a soft reset. Now when I turn it on, all I see is Boot loader D0.11 Battery OK Program OK connect USB cable.
I've tried to flash 2 SPF's. It was rooted recently, and had the latest updates. Everything was fine untill I did the soft reset.
What is causing it to keep returning to the boot loader screen?
Also, when I try to flash it via RSD Lite i keep getting Error switching to pass through, or something simular to that.
Ive tried 2 SPF's and factory reset, cache format, all that.
I have to have this phone for work, so any prompt help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey man that exact same thing happened to me. You are going to need to SBF to stock. 1KDS has a nice tool out there. It is a mini linux distrobution that you burn to a CD and boot up on it. Just google ezSBF by 1KDS. Hope this helped

I tried using all 3 of his CDs and none of them would boot my D2G past the bootloader. Also tried using rsdlite with 3 different SPF and nothing came of that either. Would continue to receive MEM_MAP blank error. I'm really out of ideas now.
There was an OTA recently by Verizon/Motorola released which breaks the ability to SBF to an older software release (they simply updated the boot loader and the new one does not accept older releases).
Unfortunately the cure of this would be a new SBF to be leaked with software release same or newer than the one from the past week OTA. Until then you're stuck with soft-bricked phones.

Stuck on AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S) (Boot Failure)

Hey guys!
Was trying to solve the restart loop problem by installing a MIUI rom, but I am now stuck on this screen that says..
Stuck on AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S) (Boot Failure)
Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer Mode:
USB Connected
Invalid CG OTV(CG: webtop): Invalid SP Data
Invalid CG Version (CG: webtop)
Invalid CG OTV (CG: webtop)
Any thoughts or help would be highly appreciated
Did you find the proper fxz for your base firmware and flash it?
Need more info about where you are coming from, what you did to get this problem, and what you have tried..
Sent from my MB865 using xda app-developers app
I am not sure what fxz is...but from what I know, it was on 2.3.6 and next update was failing and it was restarting..so I rooted the phone, installed the bootstrap...tried installing miui from there.. it restarted and now I am on that screen...
Have not tried anything else after that... I was looking around and it seems, I should flash something from fastboot mode? I am currenty downloading the ics fastboot files... planing to use RSD lite to install it...
Is that right approach?
Thanks for your help through...much appreciated.
EDIT: Its an AT&T Atrix 2 if that helps..
So, you were on 2.3.6? The 4.0.4 update failed?
If so, then you should probably be using the 2.3.6 fxz/sbf/fastboot/firmware files - flash those to go back to stock GB, then ota update to ICS the normal way (unless returning to GB is important to you - if so, find ICS leak #1 and install that instead of the ota update after restoring stock 2.3.6).
And yea, you need to be on ICS base to install miui (unless there's a GB version I didn't know about).
Sent from my MB865 using xda app-developers app
Edit: you seen this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32113181
Links to the att-us 2.3.6 and 4.0.4 fastboot files are there.. Just read carefully and ask if you're not sure.
It's important to know if you were on 2.3.6 or 4.0.4.. and if you just tried to install a new ROM (system only) through custom recovery, or if you flashed something else through fastboot.
I was surely on 2.3.6, but it was not stable and was rebooting quite often ...it was also trying to download the next update, each time the phone was on...but it would just restart before the download could ever finish...
I rooted the phone after that, installed bootstrap.apk to get into clockwork recovery, then tried installing the MIUI which was based on 4.xx something .... but that failed and I got stuck in that screen....
So, basically, I should download AT&T 2.3.6
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/InlineFlashing_edison_5.5.175.25_cfc_p3_APBP.xml.zip
use fastboot and follow these steps?
Fastboot erase system
Fastboot erase userdata
Fastboot update romfilename.zip
Fastboot reboot
OR
Try to use RSD lite instead?
One more problem though...I tried using the fastboot erase system command...and it tells me Battery low...
I have the phone on charger now, but the Fastboot screen comes up again and I am not sure if it will charge this way?
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
You need to charge somehow (wall charger, macgyver method, another battery, friend's phone, at&t store, etc).. It doesn't charge in fastboot mode.
Then try RSD lite..
Otherwise, you would need to use moto-fastboot commands. See the files in the zip package here for examples (you can look at the .bat files for the proper commands): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36834775&postcount=108

So it just reboots at random? Or it boots to Fastboot mode everytime?
If it's random reboots, you might have a hardware issue in your phone.. And you could ask AT&T for a replacement (they will most likely just give you a new Atrix HD since our A2 has been EOL'd).
If it boots straight to fastboot everytime, then there's something else.. not sure what, but I have seen others post of that issue.

I was only doing a OTA update and I ended up in this mess of reboots, then I tried installing the 4.something MIUI, then fastboot files of 2.3.6...and now in this mess
I dont have any backup files or anything...if there any way I can go to stock maybe? or maybe if I can somehow manage to go to ICS, this might be fixed? No ideas :crying:

You did go back to stock 2.3.6 (the fxz should have flashed all stock images/files)... but if your cid is gone (not positive though that that is your problem), there's no getting it back (it is specific to each device).
You could try forcing the update to 4.0.4 by following this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779968 - but not sure it will install the update if it can't recognize your phone. You are sure it is an AT&T phone, right?
Unless some other members here have some ideas, not sure what else to try... except calling AT&T for a replacement if you bought it under contract. Just tell them that an over-the-air update failed and the phone keeps rebooting..
So, I wonder, did the OTA update start installing, then fail (a while after installation started)? Maybe that messed things up.. Usually, if it fails right away at the beginning of installation during the system checks, then it should be no issue.. But if it was interrupted later during the install, then that can cause major issues.

Deleted Build.prop

So i was changing my build.prop so i could install facebook home, and i wanted to change it back.
i must've renamed it wrong or something.
anyway,
now i'm basically with a no boot phone.
(droid razr hd)
what do i do? ive read many things, but theyre all 2 years old.
i can't really access recovery menu or any of those things.
i'm about to try fastboot. but like i said, i can't even access the menu thing. any suggestions?
Just deleting or misnaming the build.prop wouldn't keep you from accessing the boot loader. You need to restore using fast boot files. And in case you don't already know its volume up+dwn +power

i shouldve updated the thread, so i am able to get to the bootloader, but i tried everythimg after that.
i tried recovery boot, factory boot, then i tried by using fastboot files and none of that worked.
(fastboot always said error now that i think about it,maybe i had the wrong files)
i tried rds lite but no luck there.
i tried razr hd utility (the one that was used to root 4.0.4
i also tried pushing the good build.prop by adb, but i always got a read only problem, so i couldnt overwrite the bad one.
i tried remounting in many different ways and none of them allowed me to copy over the bad one.
this is where i gave up.

RAZR HD Maxx rootability

Just replaced Samsung Galaxy Nexus with this razor. Should be a step up right? Apparently I'm spoiled. Wife has the bionic so I'm familiar with the basic process.
Doing research, resetting the device like 15 times and reading a ton of threads in the last couple days, it looks like I have the phone itself actually rooted however I'm not able to fully install safe strap.
What's interesting to me is that I can use programs that require root access far as I can tell with no issue, root checker shows root is available as well. Trying to reboot into recovery though does not give me the safety strap splash screen to choose any kind of recovery option. Just rolls into DROID...
Is this pretty normal if the previous owner accepted the OTA update to take me to 9.18.79? Are we stuck?
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda app-developers app
Did you open safestrap and install recovery?
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk 4
Sure did. Says installed and from all the videos I've seen explaining the install/usage and my wife phone installation, I'm quite sure it's installed.
I've tried multiple versions just to be sure clearing data and uninstalling previous versions etc.
At this point I'm just not sure if this is normal or not because of the OTA version that's on here.

Thinking that the safe strap process should be the same but realized that there is a set of HD XT926 forums I should probably be posting in. Didn't realize the differences.

Just wondering, it wasn't clear, are you on the 9.18.79 build or not sure? A screen shot of your "about phone" screen could tell unless someone rolled back. Only reason I ask is, safest rap is great if there are no options but unlocked is where the real profit is.

yep, that's the version I'm at. I think I mentioned that in the original post. From everything I'm reading I should be able to install and run safe strap with no issues but it just doesn't ever bring up the menu. At this point I'm looking for alternatives I guess.

are you sure its not already unlocked?
if you havent already, i would flash back to clean stock, not just wipe/"reset", and try again. wiping wont get rid of or fix anything in the system directory.
First off don't attempt to flash any aftermarket recovery if your BL is locked, you might run into issues. Second, SafeStrap doesn't replace your stock recovery because you can't replace your stock recovery if you have a locked BL. To get into SS, just boot your phone normally. Once the phone boots, you'll get the SS screen that allows you to go into SS recovery or boot into OS normally. Once in SS, then you can start running backups, flashing, etc.
i didnt see anyone suggest he flash a stock recovery.
he got the phone used, maybe its already unlocked, i didnt see that possibility confirmed or denied.

When you say UNLOCKED, are you referring to the Boot Loader? If so, I do not believe that it is, just Root at this time.

100% agree with this, should be that simple. Happens properly on the Mrs Bionic so I'm familiar with that process. This phone doesn't produce the menu no matter what version of Safe Strap is installed (tried multiple).

Planning to go back to stock stock, beyond the wipe. I believe a previous poster mentioned that the standard wipe doesn't remove root. A fresh start may be my next step. Hoping the 1.32 Droid Razr Utility by Mattlgrof http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2474393 will do that for me.

just boot into the bootloader screen (vol+power) and see if it says device locked or unlocked (may have to choose "fastboot", to see it i dont recall)
yes Matts utility will clean the phone for you, i updated it to 1.3+ for him
Used the utility to wipe the phone and reflash back to stock, at least that version. All seems good however moto chopper doesn't fully install root with superuser. I get the typical su binary needs to be installed and that fails.I did tried to run the updates in Play Store that was available as well as clearing data etc with no luck. I think the last time that I was able to successfully Foot I used a different Root program, razor maybe?

read the post from the utility, the root in the utility is not the one you need to use. the correct one is in the post. (it actually says it in the command window of the tool too)

np, i did update it a few times, but working 6 days a week, i dont feel like messing with the root right now.
So I've just done option 1 with the factory reset, then ran moto chopper 1.32 and have good root. Confirmed. Ver. 9.20.1
Safe strap seems to be the only issue I keep having. The menu just simply doesn't come up while booting. Doesn't matter if the phone is completely shut off and turned on or rebooted.
Puzzled.

Grns did mention that he might try flashing PhilZ recovery, that's why I said what I did. His OP also mentioned that the previous owner took the latest OTA, so it's highly probably that he's locked up (though, not 100% certain). I'm only suggesting these things in advance, so that he doesn't run into problems.
As for your SS issues, that's kind of weird. You should get the options as soon as the phone boots up.

Attempted to downgrade and now brick?

I originally had andriod 4.4.2 on my maxx hd. Read a few articles and found that it was capable of being rooted using tr.adk with moto_pocalypse. Did it and it work fine. I attempted to try to install twrp but wasn't able to find a easy way so i decided to run Razr HD Utility 1.34 to try and bring the phone back to 4.1.2. Now i am stuck in a loop with the motorola boot screen. I assume i confuse the phone with a bootloader and it cant find the correct file. Can anyone recommend a fix? I was able to flash TWRP with fastboot but it doesn't do me any good. I still have capability to fastboot.

Since you are on KK, you cannot flash the tz or gpt partitions back to a previous version, so that could be part of your issue. Your best bet is to reflash the phone back to stock KK first.
Also, when on KK, did you ever switch from Dalvik to ART? If so, you have to reformat the data partition which means you lose everything on it. Switching to ART reformats the data partition and it is no longer compatible with previous versions of Android. It reformats it but preserves your data. I believe if you switch back to ART, it still doesn't reformat it, so you still have to format it, but you want to switch back to ART first before downgrading.
What should have happened was, before you attempted to downgrade was to revert back to dalvik, back up your data and then reformat the data partition. THEN, you could have downgraded using the universal script in SamuriHL's House of Moto tools. That's what you should be using.
Next time, instead of being creative, you should really research things and if you have any questions, ask before doing it to avoid bricking your device.
Even with an unlocked bootloader, you could still brick your device permanently if you do something completely wrong (like flash the incorrect image for your phone). I've seen many people flash images to their XT926 that were not even for the XT926 (I believe I read one guy who flash an XT926 with an XT925 or something like that) and that pretty much was the end of it. An expensive paperweight.
Hopefully, the link helps.
