[Q] Unable to flash any ROM from recovery - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running off the Vanir ROM at the moment, but due to the lack of camera wanted to flash it back to something more full-featured.
The problem is, any ROM i've tried (Carbon, RODT, Shohat etc.) comes up as being an invalid zip file.
I've tried both TWRP and Philz recoveries, and re-downloaded the ROM's multiple times.
Why would every zip I try to flash from be invalid?
Using the spring variant G900P.

you might want to flash back to stock via ODIN and re-root

Are you using an external sdcard? If yes drop the ROM in the internal one, and try.

Installing from the internal storage seemed to do the trick - re-flashing to stock did not help.
Thank you!

New G2X Owner - Few Questions

Hey Guys,
Brand new owner of the G2x and Android for that matter ( had an iphone before)
Of course I am looking to flash some roms and see how they are. The phone is rooted, and I downloaded rom manager and flashed CWM. But now I am reading and seeing that it is safer to use NVFlash? Do I need to remove CWM or w/e before i can flash NVFlash? Do i even need NVFlash?
Thanks in advance.
Rom manager flashes fake cwm. U don't need to remove it though. But u have to flash it again via nvflash. Otherwise u won't be able to root or flash any custom rom.

Thanks for the replys!
Another question is:
Is this possible to do without a SD Card in the phone? If so, where do I copy the flashable zip files too on the phone?

Not on the more recent CWM, you'll need a SD card.

If have the latest CWM (5.2.0.0 I think?) You can flash zips by selecting Flash .zip from SD card > flash from internal SD. You can place your .zips anywhere you'd like.

You actually can use the rom-manager-cwm to flash roms. With the G2X, rom manager has 2 issues that I've encountered. The first is the one mentioned already: that it doesn't actually flash clockworkmod recovery to the recovery partition. The problem here is that if something goes wrong and you can't boot into android, you also won't be able to boot into cwm. As you stated, using nvflash installs cwm to the actual recovery partition so you can boot into it even if you can't boot into android.
The second problem I've had with rom manager on this phone is creating and restoring backups. The backups created with rom manager won't restore properly. It's been a while since I've used it though so maybe that's been fixed.
Either way use nvflash. It's the most reliable method for this phone and the only way to actually flash cwm to the recovery partition.
You have to use nv flash or if you run into any problems you won't have a recovery. Nv flash is both simple and difficult. If you have any questions just email me at [email protected], I will be happy to help you in any way I can. I'm a full time writer at ACS, so you can find me there also.

Yeah I flashed nvflash and am now running Weapon 3.0

[Q] Softbrick

so i (stupidly) installed a stock kernel on the cm10 nightly, without checking which i had downloaded, and am obviously not able to boot. This is after a full wipe as well, so i dont have any roms or kernels on the internal sd. now, i have a dock and sd with a rom on it, but cant access it from CWM recovery, as far as i can tell. i've tried flashing through adb with update, and pushing files to the machine, but neither work. are there any other methods i can try? my brain is somewhat fried and i'm out of ideas thanks!
EDIT: i guess a good answer may be to install a img of a cm10 kernel through fastboot? is there anywhere i can get that?
You could flash a CM10 kernel via fastboot and you should be fine.
But usually flashing a full rom from recovery should do the trick because even if you flashed a wrong kernel the recovery shouldn't be affected.
P.S: Use the internal microSD slot instead of the SD slot from the dock.
No Nandroid backups to save you?
I don't have a micro sd and no backup, did a complete wipe. Is there anywhere I can grab the cm10 default not over clock kernel img? Thanks

Did you wipe the O/S too?? I suggest you should flash a full rom instead.(not just the kernel)

Just buy a cheap 2GB microSD, download the full CM10 rom (you will find the link in the official CM10 thread) , upload it to the microSD card and then use the custom recovery to install the rom.

Strange TWRP problem, no OS detected etc. Boots fine to stock

I ran the causal root applet on a new SG3 on 4.1.2. Ran root, the unlock script and installed TWRP. Booted into recovery and I got the error for a locked bootloader. I used download mode to get back to the stock rom and then used E-Z unlock to unlock the bootloader. Was able to boot into recovery this time but TWRP read internal and external memory as 0mb, unable to make a backup, and gave a no OS error when went to reboot. I updated TWRP with TWRP manager but the problems are still persistent. Phone boots fine and reboots fine at the moment.
I'm not sure what to do now though. I'm at the point were I don't care if I get stuck with the OTA update but I'm afraid that will brick the phone. I'm not sure what went wrong with TWRP, since this is the second S3 I've rooted.
Any sugestions? I'm afraid to use odin or try anything else since the phone currently works fine. But I'd prefer to not have to sleep in fear it might force the OTA update while I'm asleep and wake up to a bricked phone.
I tried searching, the best I could find is that newer versions of TWRP can't read the memory on a 4.1.2 rom, but the problems were there when I originally started with the recommended version.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
Try to use cwm or philz and see if you have the same issue.

Can you install a different custom recovery over one using the causal applet? I was planning on trying to reinstall TWRP but I wasn't sure if I had to do it a certain way like through odin or Using the unified tool kit?
Thanks for the help so far!

No.
Download latest philz touch recovery d2lte zip, then flash it in recovery, then reboot recovery.
Then check and see if you're getting a similar error message.

I can't, recovery doesn't detect my internal or external memory. That's my main issue.

OK.
Then download the Odin version and flash through that. Then boot the phone into recovery.
Or download ez recovery, and the latest cwm image file, and flash through that from your rom.

I tried CWM and the stock recovery through EZ, both gave the same error as TWRP, unable to mount /
I'm really confused as to whats wrong. At this point I don't care if I get stuck with the OTA 4.3, but I don't want to try to update it with the recovery still not reading either my SD cards.
Any Ideas?
Are you sure of your phone model? I believe it puts it on the screen in download mode and also on a sticker under the battery. I'm mostly curious because you mention that this is a new phone with 4.1.2. Are you trying older versions of cwm as well?

I'm pretty sure, has all the verizon bloat and logos, also I'm pretty sure the causal applet bricks the international ones. I don't remember the version of twrp that the causal script flashed, but I tried that one, the most recent one, and 2.5 i think from EZ recovery. The stock recovery from EZ has the same issue now though which is what really confuses me. at the moment I have root dissabled and the bootloader is locked and its back with the stock recovery, it still says custom when i reboot the phone though.

[Q] Problem installing ROMs (status 0)

I wanted to try a KitKat ROM so i downloaded a couple on PC and transferred to SD card. I did a backup (which really saved me lol) and then, as instructed , formatted system, data, and cache. Wiped Dalvik and flashed ROM (Paranoid Android 4.0). It started but after the "installing update" message I got a error message " error /location of zip/name of zip (status0)". I thought it meant that the zip was corrupted so i downloaded on PC again. Transferred to SD and tried to install following the same stepsand got the error again. After that I tried to install another ROM(Validus 5.1) and still got the error. Decided to restore and see if i could get help before trying again. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks in advance for any help
EDIT can dev please move I thought i was posting in troubleshooting section. Sorry

If the version of Philz you are using is from JB then that could cause the errors.

Status 7 means that your recovery is out of date. I am running AOSPA Beta4 on my p3113 and installed it using the latest TWRP from the below thread. The version of cwm in that thread should also work.

I am currently using TWRP, but I have used PhilzTouch in the past. They both work pretty well. TWRP has bigger buttons that are spaced out better and has an easier interface to use. PhilzTouch has some other features but isn't as polished. It is just a matter of personal preference. Some Roms will have a recommended recovery listed, though.
Also, to make sure that the zip you download isn't corrupted, check the md5 of the zip you download against the md5 on the download page.

Biggest advantage of using Phillz touch is that it can detect OTG cable,so you can flash ROMs from USB device as well;on the other hand, TWRP allows you to flash 10 zips at the same time,it will release the overhead of selecting Zip one after another manually. So choose your options wisely.
Edit:-
One more thing I would like to add,Phillz touch blackhawk supports dual-booting through next kernel

Have you wiped data/system/cache/factory reset in recovery??
This has happened to me before. In combination with the stock JB roms. There should be a flashable zip somewhere, that fixes the problems that stock JB roms cause.

So if you're having prolems with preload partition you need this:
PRELOAD PARTITION RESTORER
* [12-MAY-2013] The following CWM zip will restore your preload partition. You would need this in case you are restoring EMBRYO-7.x from a nandroid or you messed up the preload partition. In case of Nandroid restore, do it after you restored in the *same* session (that is flash it before you reboot). preload-restore-EMBRYO-7.x-cwm.zip
Please check the MD5SUM for all downloads on YOUR phone (not on the PC e.g). Source
