Hey guys and gals!
Is there any quick fix to increase the size of /datadata, or could it be symlinked to a partition on the SD card?
Here's my issue thus far:
Anytime I've ever installed/flashed 4.2 and up on the Infuse, I get continuous force closes after about 24 hours. I've traced it to the fact that /datadata fills way too fast, and I don't know of any "quick fix" other than formatting the partition in CWM and starting over again.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!

My issue here is that I want to utilize as much internal storage as possible before attempting to use SD card space.
I'm running the latest nightly of Carbon 4.4.3, have only about 100 apps total, including the Gapps package (BaNkS full, about 90mb), and I've already uninstalled the "data hog" apps like G+ and Bitstrips.
This has been going on for a long time and has been the #1 reason I've stayed with 4.2 or earlier ROMs.
If I could get help figuring out how to fix this hurdle, it would make KK a lot more usable to me.

I have same issue right off the bat once I leave GB stock for one of the game I was playing.. such a data hog (250-300MB). I end up installing new rom to test then revert back to GB stock to play the game. I don't want to bother with symlink to external sdcard since mine is a class 2. Using it to backup stuff only. Would love to see this issue fixed or easier remedy to do it yourself. I tried JoyOS rom which got nice feature for symlink to sdcard int/ext built in which solved the issue. The rom got some other issues for me to use it and not being work on anymore. Definitely would love to see dev for other rom to add symlink feature.
I think I've found something that works....maybe.
App is on play store and is called "Cache Apps to SD".
So far it seems to be doing what I need it to by moving data from /datadata to my external 4GB SD card.
Why external? Idk... can't be very secure in the case of someone stealing your phone and getting private data from the external SD... but it seems to be doing something good.

I would think you could use a half gigabyte card if you wanted to, it's more than the 350mb allocated.
And so far so good, no decrease in speed or smoothness that I can detect yet, and it's slowly moving all the stuff from /datadata to a folder on the SD.

It's straightforward in theory, but setting it up might be a little tough.
First pic shows my setting. I have it set up to use /storage/sdcard1, which is a class 4 4gb card... Nothing fancy and it works really well so far.
Second screen shows any extra settings, which all I have is to hide the notification when it's done starting up.
Fairly simple to use.
You'll notice that it will make a folder on the SD for itself and start putting data into it.

Class 10 is perfectly fine. It won't use the entire 32gb, of course...
I'm just using the class 4 card and I notice no loss in performance.

So, after a few days of use I realized it's not working as well as I'd hoped.
I got ballsy and decided to reinstall G+.
Big mistake!
I saw /datadata dwindle to a heart breaking 11kb right after install.
Then a SuperSU update took SU away from the app...
Not pleased at this point, but I can't blame the developers.
Sent from my forehead using Jedi mind tricks...
I'm thinking of trying something different:
Symlink /data/data to /data and make it use that partition, then maybe give the 350mb back to /system, allowing more breathing room for Android.
What say you?
Sent from my forehead using Jedi mind tricks...
I think the stuff in /data/data used to be in same place as /data itself since I don't see it in GB stock version. The apps and games I installed wouldn't take over 900MB. 300MB would be a reasonable size for them all and the rest has to be data the app and game generate. This would explained why my memory hog game was able to install w/o out issue but has trouble in new rom when those data got split to it own folder partition.
OK, fresh install of Carbon 6/22...
Typed "df" in terminal and took a screenshot.
Haven't started any real apps yet, but I'll post a screenshot when I do.

There's this:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/39718-workaround-for-small-datadata-partition/
This brings the contents of /data/data back into the fold (not it's own partition). I guess it was split originally (not sure when) to avoid lag, but it doesn't really make sense for this phone because it's all on the same internal SD card.
EDIT: There is also the Ext4All app that (supposedly) does this for you:

they come back after about 5 minuets or so. its because they are stored on the sd card.

It could be something simple I am just a android noob and plan on living on these forums reading as much as I can.
the disappearing wallpaper is due to the wallpaper being on the sdcard and not phone storage (same device in a physical sense, different partition/device to the os) the ui loads before the sdcard mounts. the media scanner seems to run before the apps are loaded. so it needs to load the default wallpapper to unlock the phone.
the other disappearing apps may be due to the same thing but they should show before you have an opportunity to reinstall them, unless they are somehow on the external sd card and that sd card happens to be a class 2 or something slow like that.
i hate apps to sd for anything other than older phones that have under 512mb of phone storage. it just causes confusion, i dont really know why some apps like to install to the sd card on this phone others dont and it never asks you, this never happened on my captivate.

2GB is a pretty huge amount of space for apps so I wouldn't worry about that. Some of the larger games that require downloading extra cache files, like Order & Chaos, save that to a special cache folder that AFAIK doesn't count towards the 2GB internal memory limit (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Does anyone know of a way to disable apps saving to the SD card by default? In other words, how can we ensure that we always save apps to the phone? Saving to SD actually causes one of my favorite apps, SoundHound, to not work correctly as the widget isn't available, even after I move it to the phone memory.

I haven't had anything with pictures, but I have had the erroneous "not enough room" error and apps have become broken (cannot launch..) and require an uninstall/reinstall. When this happens, in the list of applications, they don't have the "nice" application name, they have the real? name such as net.hexage.radiant.hd

The attic is kind of weird when it comes to memory. Im thinking it mounts your external like internal and users the actual internal as internal. You have to get a third party file explorer to even see the internal memory. Kind of blows... But once you get used to it you work around it.

Still having memory issues. Wouldnt save a single picture from my email or internet all day. "download unsuccessful" for web pics or "download failed" for email pics.
Pretty lame.
for those of you with issues, are you installing apps to sd card?
i'm thinking what it's doing is when you use apps2sd, it's mounts sdcard-ext as dynamic on the internal memory, but then redirects all sdcard items to sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. ie apps2sd moves apps to /sdcard-ext and sizes that partition as needed (say 400mb apps, it sizes at 500mb). you take a pic, it goes to save it, but the system is now directing it to /sdcard-ext instead of /sdcard. it sees that there is only 500mb left and kicks it out or activates the low memory message.
if you're installing apps to the sdcard, turn off the phone, pull the microsd card out and pop it into your computer and see what's on it.
i also think that if you use a microsd card, you forfeit the entire 8gb internal storage.
then again, i could be wrong...
Ive been installing on the internal memory.
Thing is, some stuff saved on the memory card (ie from inet etc) will sometimes just become unreadable. This phone has some caching issues or something.
And judging by all the complaints etc, i doubt its a memory card issue.
ok, i removed my sdcard
storage still reads at 4.77GB internal
when i try to take a pic, it tells me to insert an sdcard.
8gb is a lot of space for apps lol 10k justin beiber fart soundboards

Have u tried App2SD app?... it will automatically change the location for the new installed apps to the SD card instead of the internal memory.
Ofc some apps just need to stay in the internal memory but, just to mention, i have 114 apps installed, 91 in the SD the rest in the internal memory (including the stock apps)
Direct Access to the [email protected] ---> bit.ly/sXV3KY
I am on octane with link2sd with no problems, there is a setting that you turn off so all of your apps don't go to sd. This way you can choose
Figured it would be good to see how much interest there is in it so maybe a dev will see the point of taking it on.....
Whether I personally use enough apps to fill up internal memory or not, A2EXT is a nice option to have and I miss it. I remember in the past, when implented properly, I had apps on ext and when I would install a rom the apps I had on ext would already be waiting for me on first boot rather than having to wait for them to redownload from the market or restore from Titanium. My vote is yes, if a dev is willing to spend some time to bring that feature to us it can only enrich our experience and would be welcome.

while we are wishing
Id prefer a data2ext that also takes none vital system app files and places them on a partition in the sd card, and ability to make the extension around 2 or 4 gigs, for those of us with 32 gig sdcards that can afford the lost space. with dual mount sd card function should never have to worry about removing or mounting the sd card to where its unreadable to the system. thats my vote
I've never really used A2SD even with my G1, however, having all my apps on a fresh install does seem like a nice feature. Personally, the internal memory is more than enough for me.
I guess its more of a nuisance than anything though (regarding installing apps on fresh boots).
Yes.
1) Make easier backups with A2EXT.
2) A2EXT loads faster than the laggy A2FAT.
3) You can always resize the partitions via Gparted.
4) Unlocks the full potential of Android devices.
Anyone who has an argument against A2EXT should stick with the iPhone.
Absolutely A2EXT,Data2EXT is very nice. being able to have all the apps and data ready to go for the same 15-40 apps with data i use on every rom.
depending on which rom im using equals more or less, but that would make things alot faster.
but its still fun individually installing each one.
Ive had this phone for a couple months now and have been doing more reading and research and have just begun to flash all the roms. having a few of them now, it would be nice to have A2EXT,DATA2EXT.
I thank everyone for their hard work and have a great day!! (baby cries gotta run)
sorry for the newbish question, but in Settings->Applications->Manage Applications, what does the "Move to SD Card" option do? Is that only to move the app's data to the SD Card? I've never used it before.

Cyanogen explains it best. A2SD is where you move it to a part of the SD card formatted to EXT format. What Google calls "A2SD" is the result of a symlink-at-best feature that forces a placeholder for each app on the phone's internal memory with the added drawback that (unlike the real A2SD), when mounted to the hard drive, the apps on the Fat partition are unusable.
There was actually a "no" vote? What does it matter to the people who don't want it?

I'm surprised people actually care enough to vote "no." If you don't want A2EXT, let the grown-ups who know how to set it up partition their own SD cards and run the apps off of the EXT partition.
I tried updating an app last night on my tablet, actual app is Hill Climb.
In the play store I was getting insufficient space available when I tried to update it. I checked my storage and had almost 1.5GB availble. What's going on? No way is the update of that size..
Also I am running AOKB milestone 1 rom. I am also about to order myself a 32GB SD card.
But can someone tell me what's up with this insufficient space error I get? I tried rebooting and it didn't seem to help.

I tried updating an app last night on my tablet, actual app is Hill Climb.
In the play store I was getting insufficient space available when I tried to update it. I checked my storage and had almost 1.5GB availble. What's going on? No way is the update of that size..

I've had that happen a couple of times with other apps. I think it's the app and not the tablet but I have no way to prove it. I don't remember the app I had that problem with but I also had plenty of space when it happened. I just tried installing Hill Climb and it installed without a hitch. FWIW, I've googled the problem and others have had the same problem.

Thanks! Well from what I saw was is that there is apparently some sort of 'partition' for APPS? Which is not related to your overall storage, so it could depleet itself pretty quick?
I just don't know how exactly one increases this APP partition or what can be done about it? Basically the 1GB I see is meant for music/photos/videos etc.. APP installs go on a different partition all together.
Any idea about this?
I had this issue the other day, I rebooted the tab and it went away.
Turns out there is an app called APP2SD that I guess takes care of this.. going to have to look into this and see what it does.

I couldn't get it to work on my tab. My Droid X & Droid Razor Maxx both have the option to move apps to the SD card under app settings. I don't know why the Tab doesn't.
Maybe because the card is actually shown as extsdcard and the internal memory is shown as sdcard.

What do you mean? I don't even have a SD card currently installed in the device..
In a file manager if you look under mnt in the root directory you'll see an sdcard, that's the internal memory. An SD card will show up as ExtSdCard
I think the Galaxy Tab memory structure is a unified "internal memory" area which is shared by both app installations and user data. There are no separate "app" and "user data" partitions, though there is of course a separate "system" partition.
Since App2SD works by moving files from the app partition to the data partition it has no relevant function on the Galaxy Tab.
I have no idea what causes the insufficient memory errors though. This is a common problem and the cause of much frustration for many users.

Definitely NOT "unified" there is a 2.8GB partition for installing the APP apk's into then there is the internal storage of 4.59 GB (which is most likely where the OP has the 1.5 GB free).
OP- go into your application manager under settings and look at the bottom for Device Memory, it should be x.x GB of 2.8 GB (on the 8 GB models) this is most likely the area that is low on storage, as I have added less the 100 MB of apps and I have 1.8 GB used of the 2.8 GB so I imagine if you install games and stuff it would fill up real quick.
I believe there is a thread about moving apps to the "SD card" (remember in android you have 2 "sdcards" first is labeled sdcard and is actually the internal storage and second is labeled extsdcard and is your removable microsd card if you use one).

Oh really? Well thanks for that info.. So that APP2SD app is for other types of devices?
At this point I can't re-download that Hill Climb game at all.. I've tried rebooting the device a few times now. Any other options left?

How exactly do you do that?
Settings -> Apps -> scroll down till you find Google Play and Services Framework, tap on each and press clear data and cache

Yes.. lucky patcher is installed on mine as well. So that's gotta be it.
So you went into lucky patcher and choose the game (Hill Climb) and removed the ODEX files for it?

That odex file is how lucky patcher circumvents apps ads and copy protection. And yes if its there it wont let you reinstall.
Fyi Lucky Patcher isnt something id ask about around here. Its essentially an app for pirating and removing copy protection and here at xda we prefer to stay safe and legit.

Ah well thanks I did not know that. I didn't even know what it does.. it was installed by a friend.
So how exactly do I undo this now? Run this ODEX remover thing within LuckyPatcher?

If youve already uninstalled the app Lucky Patcher cant fix/remove it. You have to use a file manager and manually delete it from /data/app.
