I'd like to discuss and compare the different AOSP solutions currently available. From what I can see, GPE is the only AOSP rom with a fully functional camera (dual lens) and other HTC features (dot view). However, GPE has the roaming issue (which is somewhat minor, but I'm really OCD about having my roms be 100% stable if I'm going to put all the work into making my daily driver).
I know there are LiquidSmooth, Vanir, CM etc... but from what I can gather these do not have a fully functional camera (dual lens) and are missing some fundamental things or are not completely stable (encryption? other minor issues).
Is there a fully operational, bulletproof daily driver setup as AOSP? I use my phone for both work and personal use. I have a lot of mission-critical things I do for work (remote meetings, etc), so little nitpicky things like "no data while on call" are really not acceptable.
For now, I am using CleanROM and it is amazing/stable and I am very happy with it. However, I am always going to be an AOSP lover and would like to return to using it as my daily driver.
I realize all of this info is out there, but it would be nice to have an ongoing discussion about different people's experiences and maybe give me enough confidence to go all-in on one of the AOSP options available.
Any input is greatly appreciated. Also, if there are any other threads that have a similar discussion please link, I could not find any. THANKS!!!!

Bummer. Well, hopefully others can share any insight as to which ROM is closest or when one is expected to be daily-driver ready. :good:
Well LiquidSmooth squashed the encryption bug and most others. I'm not sure the fault in LiquidSmooth except it won't use the dual lens. But it never will and I personally could care less. It's gimmicky at best. GPE is the best bet for you. The roaming thing is fixed in that it no longer shows the R. I can't find a flaw in GPE.

Thank you. Liquid smooth sounded great but I wasn't sure...
Pardon my ignorance... but does the dual lens do anything spectacular?

The roaming issue isn't fixed yet. It has just been modified to say that you aren't roaming, the phone still thinks that it is.

If you aren't worried about adding some after affects to your photos then no, It's used for depth.
I have been running 6/11 GPE and if you want to get away from Sense, it is currently the most stable and everything works including the duo cameras. They know how to fix the "roaming" issue but the dev needs to modify multiple files. They have corrected the displays to show LTE but you still must enable data roaming at this time. Other then that, GPE has been rock solid for me.
Did CM/AOSP devs figure out why WiFi would not stick for many of us? That is what made me make the move to GPE.

Roaming issue is significant. If you accidentally drive to a place where you're on roaming, you're screwed big time.

Supposedly there was a wifi fix recently. I haven't had too many issues with it after some of the earlier builds or using different kernels.

There is no roaming issue. The phone is not roaming. It just "thinks" it is. No one would be running GPE if you were actually "roaming"

I think he means that since you must enable roaming in settings, if you were to drive into an area where you phone would typically prompt to roam it will go ahead and start roaming since it is told to in settings.

Good point. Where I live VZ is EVERYWHERE but that will not be the case for some.
Does Verizon even have roaming charges for data anywhere in the US? I'm pretty sure the only time you might end up roaming is internationally.

GPE
The Google Play Edition ROM might have the dual camera - I had it the other day but the camera was buggy (probably because I disabled some system apps I did not want).
Paranoid Android has been the most the most stable for me ATM running skyfall tho. But your never gonna get the duo camera in aosp since it's a sense feature. Google play editions has the duo camera cuz it's not aosp.

Ah, I guess I never really thought of GPE as non-AOSP. It's very very close, but nonetheless a "modified" AOSP, which means it's not AOSP... correct?

I've been using Cyanogenmod daily for a few weeks. I work for a large rental car company as a manager. Exchange and all the work related stuff works great, the ROM is very stable. I installed mine with PA micro modular GAPPS, so it has a small footprint. It's really fast. In fact the only thing not working for me is the speakerphone. The caller ID works better, the bluetooth connects much faster than Sense, works flawlessly with any car I pair it to. I think around 20 different cars in 2 weeks. The Wifi forgot the password at home once and never again. I have Clean ROM as my back up as well, but I haven't used it since last Friday, I like CM better.

I recently got an SGS3 as a present from my wife for my bday last month, but prior to the SGS3, I had the Gnex Toro with DroidTheory's latest Non-JB, AOKP-based rom and either IMOSEYON's Lean Kernel or Franco kernel. Now, coming to the SGS3, I haven't stayed up to date with the modding/rom'ing scene due to a death in the family, and until now, have only rooted the phone just to install TBU to restore my apps and settings.
So - I need some advice. I know that there's probably over a thousand posts about roms and kernels for the SGS3, but I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience/advice they'd like to throw my way for getting the most (ie battery, speed, features) out of my new phone.
Where do I begin? I thought the bootloader was locked and encrypted, but then I saw a one-button (and it was the entire screen size, but I can't remember the name) app to unlock the bootloader. I did that, but haven't experimented with any new kernels cause I'm a little dense when it comes to what all these new options are and what they mean. Anyone have a quick, high level overview and some pointers?
Thanks for your help
Jesse
First things first BACK UP your IMEI use terminal "su" then "reboot nvbackup" it backs up your imei to one of the phones partitions. The gs3 has a bug and this hopefully will fix it. TreveE also released a zip that makes a backed up zip I'd do that too. Just search for it.
First off, let me welcome you back to not only XDA but the modding/romming scene! Second off, my condolences. I hope all is well with you now though.
First things first though, rooting and unlocking the bootloader. Seems you've already taken care of that using mmmeff's app in the Play Store. This one, correct?
After that, it's all about installing a recovery (duh!). I'm using TWRP 2.2 which you can grab here.
We got recovery setup? Good? GOOD! Okay, so, something that was found as KennyCap up above said is that IMEI (how Verizon identifies your phone as being cool for school on their network) seems to disappear somewhat randomly when flashing custom roms. Luckily, most of us are reckless enough to not care, so, we've ended up with so many people losing theirs that a solution has been found! Several, actually. Here's a thread with EVERYTHING you need to know about IMEI, backing it up, and knowing how to not be that guy who ruined his present from his wife, who now despises him for wrecking his present.
After that, you're golden man. Nothing can bring you DOWN. So, we've got a bunch of options as far as performance goes. Me? I've been using CyanogenMod 10 as a daily driver since that released. Had some strange incidents on certain builds, but the 09/06 build was fine. I just switched over to ParanoidAndroid a couple hours ago, myself. Battery life seems fine so far, as good as it was on CM10 (which by the by, is freakin' insane) so I'd recommend it if you like further tweaking your phone. I'm, unfortunately, a rom kind of guy. I, by nature don't flash kernels. Because quite frankly, I don't know.. if you flash them. So I can't help you there. But, I hope that I've been of some help! Welcome back, and have fun!
until all the kinks..well most of the kinks you can never get them all.. are worked out i am sticking with a stock based. Since you wanted battery, and features i would recommend CleanROM (Current 2.1), CleanKernel(Current 1.2), and the add on pack for the rom to get some other features.
Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832070
Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850495
Add-on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854060
I agree with a stock based ROM from your described needs, but the latest cm10 is solid for me with KT kernel.

Sounds like everyone's given pretty good recommendations so far, especially ZServ, props to you on that writeup.
I also came from Toro to SGS3, and I was a little gunshy to flash anything while the IMEI thing got worked out. Currently running a test build of AOKP from Xoomdev (www.blamexoomdev.com) and it's been pretty solid for me so far.
One thing to note, there are still RIL issues with AOSP roms (such as CM9/10, AOKP) that cause very ugly 3G coverage. 4G seems unaffected, but if you're in a low signal 3G area, you'll get drops like mad. Touchwiz based roms such as paranoidandroid, cleanrom, Synergy, etc don't seem to have these issues. Keep this in mind if you're in an area that doesn't get reliable 4G coverage. If you use an AOSP rom and have to rely on 3G you might get frequent data drops.
Otherwise welcome back, my condolences as well, and go have some fun.

I could have missed this as I read through the thread quickly but even if it's been said I will say it again for emphasis:
NEVER EVER FLASH A ROM OR KERNEL FOR THE i9300 (INTERNATIONAL) GS3.
Whew. Okay, I emphasize this because you said you used Franco kernel in the past. There is no version of that kernel for our phone. Flashing it will result in brick that can only be reversed by a JTAG.
Oh, and wrong section RAH BLAH ANGRY WORDS!

Thanks for the info. First, I have been done everything up to the nvram backup, but I just took care of that. It'd be nice to know from the post where the backup is kept so I could keep it offline. Hell, it'd be nice to be able to hot-swap one phone to another. I mean, with an IMEI backup, it wouldn't even matter if you bought a illegitimate phone from CL or something since you could always swap in your IMEI.
I really have never been an CM fan. I toyed with it back on my Droid X, even my GNex Toro, and just felt it was not as feature-rich as the AOKP or the custom variants. I mean, its lean, its quick, but so is AOSP, and I'm not looking for just plain vanilla. I want the bells and whistles. I like the built in rom control of AOKP as a separate settings menu item.
As far as kernels go, I'm really looking for something that gives me better control of the OC'ing and undervolting, but isn't so complicated that I need to bust out my TI calculator just to figure out settings. I like the rom control of the Franco Kernel app. I bought the app, drank the Kool Aid and have been a fan ever since, but have been skeptical, because, to be quite honest, I leave my SGS3 in Power Saver mode and truthfully, I am blown away with the battery life. The one big feature of AOKP I definitely miss is the Fast Charge option. I have 2A chargers in my car and home and would love to get back to charging the device from ~10% to full in 30 min or less. That was freakin' awesome. I'm waiting on my Anker battery, so I'd love to see a little more time squeezed out of the stock, cause that would just make the Anker 2200mah even more "yummy"

This is one of the reasons why we have AOSP based roms. We become less dependent on manufacturer/carrier updates.
I ask you all, who has a more vested interest in getting the i535 working the best it can on the latest and greatest? The manufacturer / carrier that already took your money and can't directly make any more profit from giving you an upgrade or the many people who own the i535, use it every day, and have the development skills to make it rock (more)? I say it's the people.
CM10 is working excellently now. I recommend M2.
To the manufacturers. Give us the hardware. Open your radio code. We'll do the rest.
To the carriers. You are not phone companies anymore. You are simply Internet Service Providers. Minutes, texts, and data are all the same thing...data (especially when VoLTE is launched).

Yea, but there are still multiple things that are broken on AOSP ROMs because we don't have JB code for our phone out there to port into them. Camera is half functional, many issues with bluetooth, the ever present flicker. And those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. AOSP is damn good, don't get me wrong. I run CM10 for a daily driver and venture out into the other flavors every now and then. But it isn't near perfect yet either.
VZW has JB for the S3. If and when it leaks who knows. (My opinion of course).

What have you been running? I'm on CM10 M2 and I've never fully lost the flicker. That's updating each nightly until the M2. It comes and goes. Now with that, I do run the leankernel, update each time it does. That might be the cause of my flicker, dunno.
And the camera is severely lacking compared to TW. Video recording might as well get thrown out the window unless you're doing a silent film or have REALLY loud people that you're recording. Can't save to the extSD without the MOD that doesn't have half the resolutions working and force closes on different things. All the face recog and little adjustments here and there don't exist in the AOSP camera.

I'm guessing my flicker is from the diff kernel then not blending with the ROM very well.
AOSP doesn't have bigger resolutions tho does it? AOSP lists it as 8mp and TW uses the actual pixels(eg 1600x1200) and I've never bothered to see if they correspond I just assumed they did.

So much truth. Everything's all ass backwards. Carriers think that they're phone designers and phone designers think they're software designers while google sits by going "duuuuur". Now we have stupid trivial things like the RIL holding cm10 back all because some assholes want their locks on everything. Imagine if AT&T or Intel told you what software you had to run on your computer? How did this sense of entitlement come about in the mobile industry?

Hate to say it but TW Roms on the S3 FTW.
Nothing more stable then the TW Roms we have for the Verizon S3. AOSP is just not there yet and who knows if it will ever be. After coming from a GNEX, you really see AOSP was not meant for any other devices and is loaded with problems when using anything else then a Nexus device.
Would love to get another Nexus device but who knows if Verizon will ever see one again and no other network is really good enough to pull me away right now.
Also, Google's claim about no LTE on the Nexus 4 due to bad battery, did anyone at Google try the S3? I would hardly call 4 hours of on screen time over LTE bad battery. They need to look past the GNEX which for whatever reason was a disaster when it came to battery. My wife's Rezound with like a 1650mAh battery gets as much screen on time then my GNEX did with a 2100mAh battery. Knock knock, don't we think something was wrong there!
Actually, I used the Thunderbolt I had previous to the GS3 for over a year on AOSP and it was AT LEAST as stable as the stock rom...probably more so. It just took time for it to get there. Saying that AOSP will never be stable is just...well, hogwash...Right now it's questionable. The roms are stable, it's just data that has a bit of an issue. If you're in a great reception area, there's no reason to not use it. Fringe areas, well, there are pros and cons.

I saw this, this morning... Apparently people are still having issues with blue tooth audio, and NFC.. but hey its a stable build not a RC. Will be flashing this at lunch!

I never said it will never be there I said who knows if it will get there. The Thunderbolt was never stable on stock so saying AOSP was just as stable is not saying much. lol
Signal is important to many people. If I was not worried about signals I would not be on Verizon paying their hight prices. I would be paying half the price for service running a Nexus 4 on a crappy GSM network. There are more issues then just signal and sure eventually they may all get worked out but so many people here jump devices so often we never get to see the final product if one is produced.
All I am saying is TW Roms have been so good on the S3 I cannot imagine sacrificing the stability at this point for an AOSP rom and trust me I would love to run AOSP. I never knew how good it felt until the GNEX which was my first Nexus device. Man, did AOKP rule on that phone.
I am currently using this rom. The only problems I seem to have are GPS locks, and the speaker phone echo. Supposedly some work was done on the echo, so perhaps a wipe is need to reap the benefits. At this point, once those two problems are fixed I would consider it a daily driver for anyone.
I don't use NFC or bluetooth, so I am unaware of problems related to those features.
Bass Issue
I'm not really sure if there is an exact stable build since the supposed stable build had Bluetooth issue by not giving the bass

I can't figure out why it isn't working for me. I go to Settings, Click on More, And Check the NFC box and it is light greyed out and it does not allow me to complete any NFC activities. I know my NFC works as I've used it this week on rooted Jellybean. Am I missing something very obvious?

Knock knock, don't we think something was wrong there!

if you search "nfc greyed out" in the question forum youll find pages of results and threads about this, and youll get your informatino much faster.
theres a zip youll find, as well as instructions.
nandroid
flash TW JB rom.
enable NFC (might as well get a GPS lock also)
restore nandroid
win
For the NFC issue, I believe that the CM10 thread includes a flashable zip or APK to fix the NFC: see this thread.
I do have a general question. I have been running CleanROM 5.6 but wanted to know how "stable" CM10 is in comparison to CleanROM. I understand that I'd be missing out on some Touchwiz features (motions, smartstay, powersave), but I am most concerned w/ battery life and data connection, particularly as I find myself never using the Touchwiz features anyway.
I am finding that reception on my S3 is inferior to my Razr M - for example, where I would get 3G or 4G signal on my M, I was getting 1x or no data on my S3. From what I've also read, data on the CM ROMs is inferior to the data on the TW ROMS. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, w/ battery life, I've also read that battery life on CM ROMS is inferior to that of Touchwiz. In any case, I am finding that the battery life on the S3 in general is inferior to that of the Razr M given my use. Specifically, I push my work email, read and respond to emails, browse the web a little bit, a few phone calls and text messages, and some FB use. On the Razr M, I was consistently getting about 36 hours of use, whereas, on the S3, I have been barely able to get 24 hours. If battery life on TW is already inferior to that of the Razr M, I am not willing to sacrifice battery life further by going with CM10.
In addition to battery and consistent data, are there any other bugs/issues w/ the CM10 stable that I should be aware of (tethering, BT connectivity, low call volume, speakerphone echo, etc.)?
Lastly, I assume that CM10 stable does not have the multitude of bugs that the present version of CM10.1 has?
This is a thread where you can post your thunderbolt problems
.android_secure
OK, I've got one that's been bugging me. I have a LOT of apps installed and if I have moved a number of the larger ones to the SD Card (to free up /data), once I get to greater than 1GB in android_secure, my phone fails to boot completely and just locks up. It's not the SD Card (32GB Class 10) that has errors (scanned with both Windows and 4Ext), just seems to be too much for the OS to handle.
I'm still running ShiftHackedA05P 2.8 (CM 2.7.3) from days gone by. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
Edit: And I use Autostarts (Advanced mode) to turn off receivers for apps that I don't want to load, and LBE to disable permissions.
You might try using a Rom that has ext4 support since it supports larger file sizes.

Thank you for the reply, expert one
The folder has ~87 files of sizes 3MB to 40MB, which causes the lockup after booting at random times (sometimes it makes it further and ultimately boots, after MANY battery pulls). Once the folder is pared down to a lesser total size, the phone boots more rapidly and doesn't lock up; seems to be a linear relationship between how many files and the total time to boot until the CPU usage drops.
It might also be that most apps are moving away from app to sd since it isn't used as much anymore.

New issue, perhaps?, I am noticing that when LTE/CDMA mode my connection is showing as LTE only where it used to use ehrpd for transport and thereby still keeping 3g radio enabled. Normally no big deal but at times I am unable to send/receive texts or make/receive phone calls. Has Verizon stopped using this middle transport for LTE? I am unsure why I am always showing LTE only and if this is causing a problem. Switching to CDMA (auto prl) is the only remedy that I have found. Any thoughts?

Not really a problem but I noticed a thread that mentioned A LOT of older devices getting a port of KitKat...any chance that could happen with this old relic? Other HTC phone with some sort of working KitKat are: Sensation, Desire HD, Vivid, Raider, Evo, Amaze and Incredible S...or at least that is what this site claims.
Oh, sorry, I'm new here so I can't post the link.
Santod was working on a KK ROM but since he has newer devices as many of us old bolt users do he puts it on the back burner because the demand for it just isn't there anymore. Be patient and maybe eventually you will see one. Or you won't....

I just saw where Droid Incredible 2 has a fully functioning CM 10.1 rom. Just wondering if that could be possible for us since DINC 2 has same processor, same resolution, same manufacturer, same everything except 4G. I'd love to have CM10.1 if it meant sacrificing 4G (or even all data).
I'm new to all this, but if you think a port is possible or maybe some other way to get this on our device I will give it 100% effort.
If it can't be done then crush my dreams now and I will somehow learn to live without my TB.
Thanks.
Porting the dinc2 ROM breaks data for the bolt since the bolt has an svdo radio setup. I have ported from it before and I either had calling with no data or just data. I'm not saying it couldn't be done but it is out of my area of expertise. Go to infectedrom. com and there is a cm10.2 build made by Santod that has working WiFi. Since data doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

It could be closed for any number of reasons. Cjen isn't a developer by any stretch of imagination. He's the same guy that kanged CM, and liquidsmooth code in the past in roms he called "liquidsmooth remastered", etc. He basically kangs roms, adds and removes apps, then rereleases them himself as though he built them, all without providing the source that would show no commits made by him. The irony is, liquidsmooth 3.2, CM7.2, And thundershed actually worked perfectly for the most part, his so called rom doesn't... If you're interested in gingerbread AOSP roms for the bolt, i'd stick with thundershed and liquidsmooth. At least workshed's and team liquid are real developers and their roms worked...

Yeah, that would be an unstable and broken early test build (not intended for public consumption). We'll have something more usable ready for you all to try soon.
Sneak Preview
For the impatient, here is a more usable preview build:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/hc19wc76a7y8374/cm-12.1-20150916-UNOFFICIAL-lux.zip
There's still a lot of work to be done, but at least the core functionality should work in this build (booting, WiFi, NFC, camera, GPS, audio, etc.). I'm not looking for bug reports at this point. Don't be surprised if you find something that doesn't work. One known issue is that AudioFX is broken right now.
But if you like living on the edge and want to try something new, you can flash it if you like. Use my TWRP build (originally mentioned in my kernel thread) to flash this ROM. The TWRP currently on vache's thread will have issues, so you must use mine.

It works well enough. Loving the LED settings. No it's not multicolored, before people ask, but you can set different lengths and durations. Battery didn't seem as good, and felt a little more choppy at times, but this is why I'm assuming they didn't release lol. Not complaining. Just super excited to see some development.

Is there any way you can enable dual sim in these ROMs straight out the gate? I don't have a second Sim to test at the moment, but that would be awesome.

Technically true. If you look inside the sim slot, you'll see the pins are there for dual sim. On the ejector tray, the second sim slot is covered by a dummy piece of plastic. There are also reports of people flashing a dual sim ROM and it working.

It's actually a stock Android theme engine. If I remember correctly, it was introduced by Sony into aosp, and it's baked into factory ROMs like on the n9. The layers app just makes things easier to manage it all, because the average Joe has no knowledge that it even exists.
