Can anyone please tell me whether CM-based ROMs like Carbon automatically update your baseband modem? I'm currently running the 5/15 nightly with ML1 modem and am wondering if I need to update my modem? Yesterday my radio system started acting really odd - my data connection completely dropped out for about an hour. When it came back I could only get 1x or 3G connections, but no 4GLTE. I am pretty sure it isn't location related, I generally get a good connection in the city (Portland, OR). All getting slow connection. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

ROMs do not change or update your baseband unless you are flashing a full ODIN image or taking an OTA. Modems have to be changed or updated separately and by you when you flash ROMs.
Different modems perform at different levels depending on the individual device and area where you live. Best thing to do is flash different modems, try each one for a few days, and test which one works best for you.

Rooting, ROMS, Kernels, Basebands, MODs, So many flashing options. I lost my reception at my cottage which is on an extended network roaming. As soon as I go into that area everything drops, voice and data. I Odined back to Stock unrooted did a factory reset and the service returned flawlessly.
I was on latest baseband J1 at the time, SynergyROM, MIEA backed up, bootloader unlocked.
Now I'm getting itchy fingers again. Want to go back to Synergy, etc. But I DON'T want to loose my reception while I'm at the cottage for a few days. It's my only connection to the world.
Starting from scratch again, what could've been the culprit?

There is a new baseband kernel. Its the (K1) kernel. Its in scrolsers ROMS and pretty much on every touchwiz d2vzw ROM.

Baseband updates certainly do affect signal. It seems that the stock one works best for you.
The good news is you don't need to update baseband to go to a different ROM. You can keep your stock radio and flash a new jellybean leak without altering your signal.

I've also noticed that many ROMs have roaming disabled by default. Not sure if it makes a difference, but might help.

I have the same issue on Eclipse...can you clarify the process for this? I'm new to Samsung. Does this have to be done with ODIN? Which (modem?) is it you're using?

I recently purchased a Nexus S (M200) and I am experiencing very low Wifi and GSM signals. In fact, it's so low that I can't even make calls from GSM when indoors and need to get outdoor to get fair signals. Similar issue is with Wifi and I have to be within 10 meters to get a stable Wifi connection.
I have tried various roms and kernels but the problem remains. Even went back to stock gingerbread rom and the same problem. Any suggestion to get this fixed? Seems like a hardware issue and my phone is not under warranty!
Help appreciated.
I experienced the same thing on Cyanogen 10.1 nightly but when I was on stock 4.1 it was ok.
Maybe it's your provider which don't have a good network where you are.
I am sorry for my english I hope you will undrstand me.

You should get the most recent baseband (radio) firmware update for your model of Nexus S. If you search the forums, you should be able to find a thread all the basebands linked. Be sure to only install the one for the model you have, because the wrong one will not work.

Flashed the latest and tested a few others but the same problem
Hi, kamran666,
If you purchased it used I would check if WiFi and GSM antennas are there and properly connected.
Take a look on this video from 2:33.
Hope in might help.
Sorry, I'm a total noob. I don't really understand how the "Baseband Version" factors into the ROM/phone operation. Can someone explain it? I have a pretty good understanding of computers but when it comes to the phone it seems very black-boxy -- I'm still learning. My underlying question is:
The BoneStock ROM says: "BoneStock v3.0 (VRBMF1) 6/23/13", my phone currently has VRBMB1. Can I flash the BoneStock ROM on my phone or do I need to upgrade the Baseband Version somehow before I do that? I saw links to different revisions on the BoneStock thread but there isn't a whole lot of explanation about how to use them.
Thanks,
-Greg

I flashed mine mf1 because it really did help signal and data speeds. In my opinion it is worth it to flash the mf1

Did you flash it before flashing BoneStock or does it matter what the order is?
Modem has no relation to what ROM you are on. You can flash whichever you want first, doesn't matter.

Hi, please PM me MB1 and MF1.
Thanks,
Hi everyone,
My verizon galaxy s3 right now has a baseband of I535VRLHE.
First I was wondering which baseband is most recent, I have heard of MB1, MF1, etc. I know where to get these software updates but I have not found out how to actually update the baseband. Right now, I am jumping between many roms but as of this moment I am on an unofficial cm 10.1 build. They suggest getting on MF1 modem, but I really have no idea how do it.
Thanks for the help,
PS: I looked for quite a while so please don't tell me to keep looking or something like that.

Do I need to wipe anything for flashing it? Also, its ok to flash baseband updates with a custom rom installed?
And these will make my radios stronger, and thus my signal stronger?\
Thanks

What modem do you guys suggest flashing to. Right now I am on I535VRLHE and by my understanding that is extremely outdated. So just to make sure again no wiping anything, no formatting, no anything? And I should be flashing an update in either twrp or cwm? I know these questions sound stupid when I said I flash roms daily, but I really do not want to risk bricking my beloved s3 hahaha.
Thanks for taking your time to help me.
from what i understand the modem that works best for you will depend mostly on location. they might get better as they update, but i get teh same signal on the latest as I did on a modem from a few updates ago.
you can download the all in one packages here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-firmware-vrbmf1-modemrpmtzsbl-verizon-sgs3-sch-i535/
reboot into recovery, then flash, reboot back to the ROM. if youre worried, make a backup. things can always go wrong i guess.
Ok thank you again, another question haha sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313&page=6 In this thread, the first few pages say to flash via odin and what not none of them confirm being able to flash through recovery. Have you ever flashed a radio through recovery?
Also what advantages does an AIO have compared to just the modem.

Try updating your radio. Also it's your dBm and asu that matters not how many bars you have. What's your dBm and asu when you have low speed? You can find out in About phone/status. I say a dBm around 85-90 is average. Anything over 100 is not good. 75 dBm is common for big cities near towers. Your asu is the amount of interference between you and the tower. The higher this # the better.
I know I got a bit technical there but I want to educate users how to properly read signal strength and not rely on misleading signal bars.

ML1 is actually the latest. Mf1 should work though. That's the one I use. Go to about phone/status. Do you show an IMEI # and MEID #? If it says 0 or is blank that if a problem. does it say roaming or disconnected for network status.
Just a quick warning. If you decide to go ML1 that's a 4.3 radio. Be absolutely sure that you are flashing the radio only and not the full firmware package. If you flash the full firmware (aka all-in-one packages) You will brick and be stuck with a locked bootloader forever.

It actually does not matter. That is the latest radio. You should be fine. Do me a favor give me a screen shot of your about phone/status page. You will need to scroll down to get all the info so you will probably need to submit 2 screenshots. This page includes your phone # so be sure to omit that part. You can get everything in 2 screenshots if you skip your phone #.

Hmm that's strange. Okay you can omit it using Photoshop and just put a black line.
But if that's too much trouble just tell me if you have an IMEI # MEID # and ICCID #. As long as none of these are 0's you are OK.

Only IMEI # is showing up nothing else. I am using NET10. as my carrier. Technically this phone is not supposed to work with net 10. Is there a dialer code I can put to get the information you want? The phone works fine I can make calls, text, have data, connect to Wi-Fi, all using straight talks apn's. I used to manually put net 10's apn's but after a couple of days would lose my contacts and data. It drove me crazy for months. I'm kind of new at all this so thank you for your patience.

**Edit**
Just flash in recovery and reboot. If you reboot and do not recieve a signal do not panic. Just wait 2-3 minutes after you boot and then reboot a 2nd time. Wait 2-3 minutes. You should have signal again after a 2nd reboot

Make sure you are in fact on 4.3. If you are you do not need to flash the firmware technically. Just the radio. You can flash the ML1 firmware If you couldn't find just the radio as the radio is included in a firmware package. There's nothing wrong with that ONLY IF YOU ARE ALREADY ON 4.3
But I uploaded the ML1 radio by itself in my post above this one. Just flash in recovery and you are good to go. Remember you can flash just the radio when on ANY Android version. What you do not what to do is flash 4.3 FIRMWARE on a 4.4 custom ROM or anything that's not based on the 4.3 Stock ROM. You will brick.

Thank you very much for your support man. Alright so if I do go ahead and flash this radio ONLY (the one you uploaded), and then later on I decide to flash a 4.4 AOSP ROM, I should be fine right? and the radio I am assuming will stay ML1.
Thanks again.

That's correct. Your radio will never change unless you flash a different radio (or if you flash another firmware which you want to avoid unless you want to lose your unlocked bootloader forever). Radio never changes on a ROM or Kernel change.
